Rat problem

OKAY.. This was a great Easter Present. my sister thought a cat was in my yard.. well you guessed it was a rat.. and it has made a hole under my garage.. any idea on how to get rid of it???

  • Johnny Portage Park

I have a few of these around our property filled with Contrac Blox poison. Sorry, hippies. I tried more humane methods to deal with the rat problem but sprinkling peppermint oil around just wasn't cutting it.

Any of the square block rat poison will do. What you do is take a coat hanger, bend it in so it looks like a hook. Put the hook part of hanger through the hole in block, then put hanger in burrow (rat's hole). This way you can check everyday...

Put the hook part of hanger through the hole in block, then put hanger in burrow (rat's hole). This way you can check everyday and see how much is gone. Better than guessing or trying to look in hole. Twice I had whole hanger gone. Found one caught on fence on opposite side of yard. Depending how big hole is put a couple, you'd be surprised how fast it's gone. If you have way to spike in hanger so they don't take off with it good if not ok too. Good luck and get the city out there to bait also. By the way better a hole by garage than your house.

Moving to Cragin

Hi, everyone!

I'm so excited to have found this website. I grew up in the NW suburbs and am moving back to the area after seven years in Columbus and Philadelphia, come the end of May. I'll be living around Belmont and Laramie. (I was under the impression that it was considered in Portage Park, but it seems to be listed as Cragin here on EveryBlock!)

Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and ask for any tips and suggestions...

Anyway, I just wanted to say hello and ask for any tips and suggestions for a person who is new to the neighborhood! What are the good places to eat or hang out? Where do you do your shopping? What should a new person know about this area?

Thanks so much :) Looking forward to being neighbors!

Jess

  • Welcome to the neighborhood! You're not too far from me.

I think most of our favorite restaurants have been covered. We love Central Gyros. A&G is good for groceries, but their dried and frozen goods can be a little limited, depending on what you're looking for. There's a Tony's on Belmont just east of Cicero where we did a lot of shopping when we lived near that corner that you might check out, too. If you're up for a bit of a trek, Caputo's on Harlem and Grand is wonderful. You'll also find a lot of useful shops at the Brickyard, on Narragansett between Diversey and Fullerton. Lowes, Marshalls, Target, Jewel, a bunch of small shops. Across the street from Riis Park, which is pretty but not as nice as Portage Park, in my opinion.

more grocery stores than anywhere in chicago, aj, tonys, aldi, fam dollar, cvs, polish store 1 polish store 2, walgreens 2 stores, dollar general, dollar tree, store near tonys, and brickyard jewel target etc.

for dogs you got petco at brickyard.

    cpl near by,

    new fitness place on belmont,

711 and shell for snack at night

wallmart just opened on diversey(walkable for you)

Crime and grafitti in our neighborhood

I heard that Indian Boundary and some other neighborhoods petitioned for tax breaks on their homes due to declining property values (O'Hare Airport noise) and won their appeals. Maybe we should appeal our property taxes also on the same basis due to the graffiti that is all over our neighborhoods and crime too. There are homes in our area that are just not selling and this is most likely the reason. I also notice that Alderman Arena and Alderman Cullerton are active in their everyblock posts. Guess that our guys, Suarez and Reboyas are too busy.

  • When the ward maps were redrawn our block went from Cullerton to Reboyas. I decided to follow his FB page hoping to get updates on the neighborhood and other ward news. What a disappointment. Nothing there but dome random guy posting nonsense. I eventually posted asking him where I could...

When the ward maps were redrawn our block went from Cullerton to Reboyas. I decided to follow his FB page hoping to get updates on the neighborhood and other ward news. What a disappointment. Nothing there but dome random guy posting nonsense. I eventually posted asking him where I could find ward info and while my post recived several likes from others he never bothered to respond. Guess I got spoiled being in the 38th for so many years having an alderman that makes an effort to keep his constituents informed using various platforms.

Suarez is Suarez's biggest fan. If you've ever gone to one of his meetings, it's nothing more than a brag fest. At the end of meeting, he tries to leave before you can ask any questions. The 31st ward office is a joke. They have a web page but no one in that office is computer literate. And yet, according to a recent article, he's the 3rd most powerful alderman in the city. Will someone explain how that happened.

Lloyd Elementary School Parents and Potential Parents

I'd like to know more about our neighborhood school. Per CPS website, Lloyd is it. I'm in the 4900 block of west Altgeld. Are there any organized groups of parents or future parents of Lloyd students?

Gang graffiti

Barry and Lockwood has been hit with lots of gang graffiti for the last few months. Please join me in reporting it to 311 or Ald. Juarez.

  • Deb R Fed-up

Last time I checked it was Reboyas. Either way they are both useless.

  • Is Suarez is alderman for this street?

Laramie avenue will be closed down from Fullerton to Grand

Fyi: According to a very small electronic road sign, Laramie avenue will be closed between Grand and Fullerton from April 1 to May 31. Take Cicero or Central as a detour so you won't be late to work or school. The sewers are going to be replaced as will the massive pot holes on the streets.

  • Hanson Park Elementary School reviewed

Hanson Park is an exceptional school. The teachers are very welcoming and understanding. Not only do they have great teaching skills, but also have a great way to communicate with students. They may be hard on the students at times, but after receiving ISAT scores, you'll be able to see that its worth it. Hanson Park has an atmosphere that is welcoming to everyone.
