Message from McAuliffe about O'Hare Noise

The following is the body of a message sent by Mike McAuliffe regarding O'Hare hearings on noise reduction.
Here's the message, copied from the email I got:

Since new runway patterns took effect at O'Hare Airport, I've heard from many of my constituents and neighbors who are now bearing the brunt of loud and disruptive noise.

To make matters worse, families in affected communities weren't given fair warning or provided with the opportunity to have their grievances taken into consideration beforethe changes were made.

After listening carefully to the concerns of my constituents, I have developed a three-point O'Hare Noise Initiative that outlines my blueprint to provide relief for residents affected by the flight paths. This plan is designed to balance the economic vitality of the airport while fully addressing residents' health, safety, and economic concerns.

The McAuliffe O'Hare Noise Initiative

Order local federal hearings so residents of the 20th District can express their opinions regarding the true impact of how increased air traffic has diminished their quality of life and environment.
Initiate a comprehensive noise and environmental impact study to accurately show the consequences caused by new traffic patterns at O'Hare.
Deliver prompt noise relief to families through the swift expansion of sound insulation programs.

I strongly encourage all residents and local businesses to sign the online petition and take the extra step of sharing it with a friend or neighbor. Together we can make a difference and have our voices heard.

If you have any questions or comments, feel free to e-mail me at mmcauliffe20@yahoo.com or contact my office at (773) 444-0611. Thank you for the honor of serving you in the Illinois House of Representatives.

O'Hare Noise Reduction Petition Link

I guess the petition didn't copy on my original post. I thought I stated you might have to contact McAuliffe's office. I'm going to try to post it again:

If the link doesn't work, I suggest you contact his office--it's good to be on his mailing list anyway.

Love your vet?

Does anyone have a really fantastic vet they take their pets to? We're thinking of adopting a dog and I'd like to have a vet in place before bringing one home. I've looked around on yelp a bit but would like to hear from pet owners in the neighborhood.

Loud blasts in Oriole Park

Loud blasts in the Oriole Park area last night, sounded like gun shots, frightened kids, animals and senior citizens! What's going on?

  • Marty_123 Beer drinker, food lover, cigar smoker....

Probably fireworks. Typical this time of year. People can't wait to fire off one of their Indiana purchased treats.

  • PattyC328 Have lived in Oriole Park for 42 yrs!

It's so ignorant. It terrorizes the pets and I imagine the wild animals as well. Not to mention if we have any combat veterans living in the neighborhood what it must do for their flashbacks. Ignorant. Leave it to the professionals to fire off. And leave it up to individuals whether they want to see/hear them or not, not forcing people in their own homes to endure it.

What's going on with Family Palace?

We were going there for dinner yesterday and were surprised to see it closed and under construction.... Did something happen or are they just remodeling?

Electrician needed

Any electricians interested in a couple of small jobs, one changing out a dining room light and one fixing a light switch in a pantry? Any idea of what that might cost? Thanks a lot. Oriole Park by Canfield/ Bryn Mawr.

Does anyone know of a good exterminator?

Every spring, we get a colony of tiny red ants in our kitchen. Apparently, a lot of our neighbors do, too. It seems benign, but we want to find a good exterminator who can evaluate our home for carpenter ants and to see what's going on. Today, we found 2 actual ants "nests" -- one inside a wooden step leading down to our basement (at the place where the tread and the foot of the step meet, the "seam" of the step) and one near or in the cement at the top of our basement wall. Black wood shavings have fallen on items underneath the nests within the past 2 days, to replace the clean surface that was created when we washed the items underneath the nest/s 2 days ago. We also noticed that we have a small crack in the cement at back door leading to the outside.

We have two cats and are concerned that spraying might poison them. We also heard about "Tyro" boxes which get the ants to carry a poison droplet placed on pieces of cardboard strategically at the bottoms of walls back to their nest that poisons the rest of the ants. It seemed to work for our neighbor, but, again, we are concerned that our cats might lick the poison and get sick.

Someone else suggested pouring a line of baby powder across the back door to repel the ants. We tried that but it didn't work.

We don't have wooden paneling. Our across the street neighbor found termites living behind his paneling!

Has anyone else had the same problem? How did you solve it?

Who should we call?

Thanks in advance. This is a great site!

Susan P.S. We haven't sprayed outside against the wall yet and are wondering if that does any good. They are ensconced in the house now.

I understand they bring it back to the nest. If your kitties like it, it is healthy for them! I sprinkle and rub this into my cat and dogs' fur for flea prevention, too. Sound like you are going to need to rip the rotted wood out. Cedar is also a natural insect repeller, too. I agree with you in regard to the chemicals...stay away! Companies will tell you it is safe for kids and pets, when in actuality, they are not!!!

  • We use terminix. If you sign up for quarterly service you get unlimited repeat visits in between. We HAD ants and they came out every week until they were gone. No extra charge.

Missing Chicken

Is anyone missing a chicken? We found one this afternoon and have it. I really hope that you are missing it because this was not on my list of pets I ever thought I would have!

  • Yes Canfield and rascher and I saw them two years ago but that one had a nest.

  • Annie Edison Park neighbor since 1990, Res HS

If you are looking for a home for the bird, there is a family I know close to Canfield / Talcott that keeps chickens. Probably too far for the chicken to have wandered?

I've been reading about the crime there (Oriole Park). I grew up at the corner of Oconto & Summerdale. Crime started years ago when the train was extended out there.

ADVICE: Two of my family's cars were stolen SO use the good old steering wheel lock AND parking break (MANY homes do not have garages there).

Break ins occurred through the basement windows. Put bars in. They CAN be made to look pleasing. Put a 2 WAY locking door on utility room in basement and inside door to basement steps.

If feasible, as it's a common hideout when crooks are getting away from police, put a locking gate on the outside stairs that lead down to the basement.

DO NOT EVER use the little pathways (which I will NOT mention here) as shortcuts to the stores. NEVER, not even in broad daylight. They are actually HOW the crooks get away and if they see you, well, just don't use them.

Don't let your young children hang out at Summerdale Playlot (if it's still there) without supervision. There was a LOT of drug activity there. I used to watch from my front bedroom window and KNEW the persons and what they were up to. It was actually the PRIMARY hook up for drug exchange even though a police officer lived right next door and another across the street and yet another at the tip of the "circle" (as we called it).
My Daddy had a Bearcat scanner (advisable to get a GOOD one for the 16th district.... don't get analog... you can't hear what's going on with analog). A neighbor police officer advised us to get one way back then and programmed it for us. That way one can know if they need to take extra precaution if something's happening.

BE SAFE!!!! Enjoy the beauty of such a lovely community! :-)

  • PattyC328,

I have talked with my Accountants and Attorneys as well as potential partners (I'm a bit worn out over it!). They ALL seem to feel that my wanting to invest is more emotional than anything else.

I DO agree with you EXPLOSIVELY, in fact, about Norwood and Edison Park....

I DO agree with you EXPLOSIVELY, in fact, about Norwood and Edison Park. Edison Park had it's day and I'm not too sure about reviving that. Norwood park, same, but there are not really the demographics/psychographic make up there that I was seeking. Dipping into Park Ridge is WAY too expensive.

It seems that the rest of my team is right. I'm trying to reinvent and renew my childhood.

I LIVED in OP, NOT EP. My family and Police Officer neighbors has their vehicles stolen. I don't know, except from word of mouth about EP (and word wasn't all that great back 30 years ago.... that's a LONG time).

I DO so very much appreciate your feedback! And yes, "technically" NP and OP are the same. The building structure (for family homes) different. Georgian style vs. Ranch style.

I do think I was about to sink a bunch of $$$ into something with my heart, not head.

I thank you SOOO kindly for your post! Also, hoping the holiday is beautiful for you with a nice picnic or whatnot. My Dadd y was a P.O.W. in WWII. He's on my shoulder today. Such a wonderful man. He passed in July 1999.

Love and honor to ALL who read this that have persons who've served/are serving. May blessings come to you and yours.

    Caryn :-)

BTW, to ALL of the VERY DEAR persons that have moved into OP, NP and EP.... I wish you the very best,

I just listened to my voice mail (from one of my Attorneys). He said he's followed this thread and that his feeling is that my heart, more than my head is into the endeavor that I was considering. I think he's right. It WOULD take much more than $2 mil. to revamp my old neighborhood and too much political enforcement.

I want you ALL to know I STILL love you!!! Please don't let anyone cut down my trees at Summerdale and Oconto. They were ALL put there for a reason. The Maple was there when I moved in as a little tiny girl. The rest, my Mom and Daddy put in and they actually DO have meaning behind them.

The bushes... gotta' be honest... I TRIED to get my Mom to allow the Landscapers to take them out (they were HIDEOUS). The new owners did.

Thank you, each and every one of you! My heart is still there.

With Love and Appreciation, Caryn <3
