So they will tear down the Crafty Beaver, a well established business in the neighborhood and build a retirement home? There are so many empty lots around the neighborhood that could probably be used instead. The Crafty Beaver is one of the most practical stores around, especially for a home owner. So instead of supporting a locally owned store we will be forced to go to multinationals like Home Depot and watch our money fly out of state. There is another retirement home just around the corner on Harding. There is a large empty lot on Wilson and Pulaski (just beautified), why is that one not being utilized instead? I will definitely be there tomorrow and hope this nonsense plan does not pass.

  • Well said, Jan. The car wash lot on Pulaski, the (newly) empty lot on Elston and Pulaski, the storage place on Montrose just east of CVS (Kimball), the lot that has the old ADT place with the empty lot next to it... those are just off the top of my head, but really, there are so many other options its like they're not even trying!

No More Recycling Plastic Bags?

I hear from my friendly recycling man that the city will no longer accept any plastic bags in the blue recycling bins. That's trash bags or grocery bags. This is confirmed on the city's site: http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/streets/supp_info/recycling1/blue_cart_residentialrecyclingacceptedmaterials.html

How long has this been the case? Seems lame, no?

  • Yes, those plastic grocery bags and plastic sheeting are recyclable but they need to be handled separately. Left in the waste stream they wrap around and get caught on the rollers that move the waste through the sorting facilities and cause breakdowns and loss of man-hours spent removing them from the stream to keep them from literally, gumming up the works.

  • April in Lincoln Square resident 22 years

The City of Chicago recycling website mentioned in the first post has brief videos about the recycling process. In the video about separating or sorting recyclables the narrator says something like, "First, the plastic bags holding the items are ripped open to loosen the contents." So it looks like we...

So it looks like we can still carry our newspapers and other plastic and glass out to the blue cart in plastic bags. We use Glad recycling bags, which are translucent. We take our bag of bags to the Jewel every couple of weeks for recycling.

Recommendation for Real Estate Agent in East Albany Park area?

Can anyone recommend a good real estate agent who knows the Ravenswood Manor, East Albany Park, Irving Park areas? Just looking for someone experienced and is a good rep. Trying to sell our condo. Thanks!

  • Thank you everyone for your input! This helps a lot!

  • Hi Lauren -- not sure if you're still looking for an agent, but I sold my condo with Lynn Briskin over the summer. She's based out of Evanston, but worked with a colleague in Irving Park to attend the showings. My unit was on the market for two days, had multiple offers, and closed in 45 days from list to close. It was pretty amazing and she was really on the ball about everything. Good luck no matter who you go with!

Kittens

I have to get rid of two female kittens. They are 7 months old. I am available today (Wednesday, 1/21) after 4:30 pm but before 6:30 pm. If interested, feel free to email me. Thanks

  • Concerned Guardian Albany Park resident for almost 2 years now.

Thanks, I got the new landlord to approve my keeping them. They are like babies, and as I stated before it would damage them to be separated. They adore each other so much. I know that shelters would separate them, that's why I reached out to see if someone wanted them so that they aren't separated. Thanks again

  • Neighborly1~ Values community.

    Concerned Guardian,
That's wonderful news! I always think kittens are happier in pairs. I have two littermates that I adopted as kittens. They have been so happy together, and keep each other company when I'm not home. :) So glad you are keeping them. Thank you for taking care of them, for thinking about what's best for them, and keeping them together.

The Deb Mell Avalanche of Campaign Flyers

Used appliance store rec!

Greetings neighbors,
Looking for a place that has good used and/or refurbished washers and dryers. Anyone have any positive experiences with any local stores? Any and all recommendations welcome.

Many thanks!

  • Andrew Levin Property Management Specialist

Mike's Furniture is still open at 1259 N Ashland. In addition to great used appliances, they have a great stove and refrig repair service mostly for appliances they have sold in the past.

  • Sue Portage Park-er

There are Sears Outlets in Melrose Park and Niles. Refurbished and returned items, some with dings but most in like new condition. You can shop the current inventory on-line before making the trip. http://www.searsoutlet.com/
We've bought a couple appliances there and have had no problems.

There's really not much more you can do other than to encourage people to be responsible; yelling at them after the business is done and they start walking away usually turns unproductive.

As for the hurling of trash out of car windows... just ONCE I'd like to see a cop write a ticket for littering. Or someone just lose it, pick up the trash and hurl back into their car. It would be nice to see the City begin a concentrated campaign against litter; some people have been doing it for so long they don't even think about it as being something irresponsible.

Oh, and to the OP retrac... I know rats and pigeons aren't the most cuddly and beloved of city critters; but they are definitely several notches above careless pet owners and litterers.

I am a dog owner and I routinely keep at least one bag, usually two, in my pocket, even when my dog is not with me. The second bag allows me to pick up extra poop I encounter on my property or my neighbors'. I also routinely use a bag I have with me to clean up all the cigarette butts I find outside my back gate and around my trash cans. (Picked up 30 of them yesterday.) On the rare occasion that I have forgotten to take a bag with me on a dog walk, I have gone home for a bag and retraced my steps. Snow actually makes it easy to do the clean up from the dogs, so it's no excuse. It's dried leaves in the fall that makes it a little harder. I find these behaviors to be absolutely disrespectful to my neighborhood.

I've called the police each time, but because they move quickly, normally by the time the police arrive, they are long gone.
I caution neighbors to be vigilant. These kids more than likely live local, and have parents that aren't monitoring their comings and goings. If you've recently had a broken window, turned over garbage can, or other vandalism in this area, this is likely the source. I urge you also to notify the police if you see these trouble-makers (you may make the report anonymously if having your info in police hands worries you). Multiple reports will generate more action and also establish a pattern, which may help put an end to this annoyance.

If interested, I would suggest you read "Letters from Birmingham Jail" too.

So, read, reflect, discuss and then actively work towards our nation's continued need to achieve racial justice.

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration for freedom in the history of our nation.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity.

But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free. One hundred years later, the life of the Negro is still sadly crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination. One hundred years later, the Negro lives on a lonely island of poverty in the midst of a vast ocean of material prosperity. One hundred years later, the Negro is still languished in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land. And so we've come here today to dramatize a shameful condition.

I can't find the pictures I took, but several years ago I rode a bicycle between Selma and Montgomery, just to take a slow ride along the route.

The Edmund Pattus bridge hasn't changed, but Rt 80 today is a four-lane mostly divided highway. Back then it was a two-lane highway. There are signs posted where the two camping spots were located. The land is still empty, but they're just vacant land, not campgrounds.

There isn't anything noteworthy in Selma. It's like any other small town. Local restaurants, but McDonalds and Burger Kings too. I didn't see anything noteworthy about the march.

Someplace near Montgomery I got chased off the highway by a state trooper. He told me since it was a federal highway bicycles weren't allowed. I tried to point out to him that this wasn't a restricted highway, there were no sign postings and that bicycles were allowed. He offered to take me into jail and let a judge decide the next day. I declined, even though I knew if MLK has been with me, he wouldn't have given up so easily. I got off the highway (he followed me until I did), camped and the next day returned to the highway several miles down the road. Several other state police passed me but didn't stop.

I got done what I wanted to get done, but Rt. 80 isn't really the most pleasant place to ride a bicycle.

They were juvenile state wards promised round-the-clock supervision and intensive therapy in a taxpayer-financed residential treatment center or in a network of nearby group homes run by the same Chicago agency.

Strip club gets neighborhood award for keeping Albany Park beautiful

Of course the APN couldn't look harder to find other businesses in the area that keep their properties neat and clean (judging a book by its cover). I guess by hitting the rock bottom, the bar can only go up now.

  • I like that even though their facade is lit, it is tastefully done. Not like the rest of Lawrence which every business seems to blind me as I'm driving with their flashing LED lights. Why does the Alderman allow this?! It makes Lawrence look like a real dump. Especially between Pulaski and Kedzie.

ALBANY PARK — There's nothing like a bike-pedaled smoothie machine to get people out of their cars and taking advantage of other modes of transportation.

Active Trans, which manages the Go program for CDOT, will spend the next several months drumming up support for Go Albany Park among community groups, as well as soliciting input on potential events.

"We want to meet everyone," said Maggie Melin, Go project coordinator for Active Trans.

Full-time ambassadors will be hired for Go Albany Park's four-month duration, June to September. In both Bronzeville and Pilsen, the ambassadors continued on a grassroots volunteer basis.

"People didn't want them to go away," said Melin.

The Brown Line, bus routes and forthcoming Divvy stations worked in Albany Park's favor, as did the neighborhood's strong sense of community, according to Melin.

Transit-oriented events are more challenging to organize, Melin conceded.

One aspect of the program that remains constant across communities is the distribution of free "Go Kits."

Based on its experience in Pilsen, Active Trans has already obtained a number of materials printed in Spanish. Given Albany Park's even greater diversity, Active Trans will work with community groups to identify other key languages.

Though Go Albany Park doesn't officially launch until June, a Facebook page will be up and running shortly, the hiring process for ambassadors will begin in April, and Melin will happily field suggestions for potential events via email at maggie@activetrans.org.
