Shots Fired Thursday night - Patrick Henry

My son said he heard three gunshots last night about 10:45 pm. He said several police cars responded but didn't know if they stopped (he saw them driving by). This is getting ridiculous that we're hearing shots so often. I mean, honestly, it's ridiculous to hear gunshots at all. Why do we put up with this BS?

  • Thanks for all the info and dialogue. I'm unclear however, where the hotspots are... I would like to have my teens avoid those areas as they move around. I have taken to driving them places and having them avoid taking public transportation after late hours. Can anyone tell me where these gang related crimes are occurring exactly? Thanks.

  • If you don't know where Patrick Henry school is then you're probably not frequenting the area. You don't really need to avoid an area if you don't go there in the first place. It's a huge problem for those of us who live here.

When it comes to getting neighbors together, they picked the right neighborhood. We are very diverse here, but very disjointed as well. Many of us are just working too hard to try to stay alive and in our homes at this point. Most of us don't know each other. There are lots of renters that really aren't concerned. And there are gang members living here as well.
We have neighborhood groups but the people who attend are the same people pretty much that go to caps - only a certain type of homeowner not at all representative of the actual community.
We need leadership. Someone - a group like APNC to organize an inclusive effort.
And this is in no way a typical gang problem.

Opinions about Life Performance Gym on Kedzie, f/k/a BodyWorx

Hi - noticed this gym last weekend and was hoping to get people's updated opinions on it, since previous posts/Yelp reviews were quite negative. Apparently many people were upset at the outset when it was called BodyWorx and they signed people up before it opened and continued to charge their cards despite the fact that is was under construction for several more years. Now it appears to be a functional gym, but any positives or negatives from my neighbors? Thanks! Catherine

  • FWIW, Galter is pricey but amazing and close.

Squirrels (or raccoon) in house

We need help removing wildlife from our house. We have squirrels or perhaps a raccoon living in the space between our top two floors. It is beyond our control. Can any suggest a wildlife removal company? And a roofing company? Thanks!!!

  • Thanks Tami. I'm through with trying to control it. The animals are too smart. And I don't want them gone, per se. Just out of my house (because as much as they bug me I enjoy watching the squirrels, especially the black ones are adorable). I have successfully repelled them for now with my cat's used kitty litter (gross but effective). We'll work towards getting a new roof in the spring. Thanks for your concern, though!

  • A friend of mine the same problem in Schiller Park. They crawled into the roof of his bungalow. He got them out but told me that the raccoon set up different areas of the roof as the bedroom, kitchen and toilet. Good luck!

Roofer referral?

Can anyone refer a good roofer/roofing company? Water is leaking from our top window frame and water marks are visible on our ceiling. Problem is that we are a 4 story building and the area that needs repair is covered with Spanish tile, which a couple contractors said was problematic to work with.

Thanks!

I invite you to join FAiR! We are the leading voice for residents in both the city and suburbs impacted by the October 2013 changes made to the O'Hare runway takeoff and landing patterns. Those changes were made without any real community input.

In addition, FAiR now includes Midway airport. Changes were made there in February 2014. Not surprsingly, these changes were made without any real community input.

We seek a real seat at the airport decision making table in order to find solutions to the massive increase in planes, noise and pollution over our communities, again done without any real community input.

Shots fired at Wilson and Whipple?

Neighbors - I noticed a safety alert on Alderman Mell's facebook page this morning that shots were fired around 5am near Whipple and Wilson. Did anyone hear this / have any more details? This hits disturbingly close, but I didn't hear anything personally last night. Thanks.

  • FYI, I noticed a police presence very early this morning (before 6:00am), monitoring the alley between Wilson and Eastwood. I sent the Alderman's office an email thanking them for taking this seriously!

  • I was startled awake by a loud noise at 5:10 a.m. Tuesday. Knew immediately that it was gunshot that I heard but had a feeling that it was more like a shotgun or AK assault weapon...very frightening cause it sounded like it happened right in front of our home. My...

I was startled awake by a loud noise at 5:10 a.m. Tuesday. Knew immediately that it was gunshot that I heard but had a feeling that it was more like a shotgun or AK assault weapon...very frightening cause it sounded like it happened right in front of our home. My husband confirmed that there were 5 quick shots and he heard them with his earplugs in (there is so much traffic on Wilson now and with the planes overhead all night...) his ears! This is NOT SUMMER...and it is happening...there is a war in our neighborhoods. The south side, the east side, the west side, the north side...it is everywhere.

This is TOO MUCH everyone...the rest of the world thinks the U.S. is nuts with all the guns and gangs. When I lived overseas in 1992, I had heard that there were drive by shootings on Wilson because there was a gang banger living in the 3000 W. block. Here we go again...I am really angry and don't feel safe in my own home. IS ANYTHING BEING DONE ABOUT THIS? WHO IS IN CONTROL OF THIS CITY? WE ALL KNOW THE ANSWER TO THAT!

  • Suzy, I wonder if you could contact the owner at the number listed on the side to let him/her know in case they want to focus their search in that area or post signs around there?

Anyone send infants to Irving Park Early Learning Center?

I am returning to work in January and we are looking at enrolling our son, who will be 3 months old, in the infant program at Irving Park Early Learning Center. We like what we see from the tours and the tuition is very affordable, but I wanted to post here to see if other parents have experience with their daycare, especially in the infant program, and what it's been like.

There are some sites (chicagogangs.org and hoodup), where you can learn some, but you have to weed through much cruft. I also follow some some flickr accounts focusing on Chicago gang graffiti. And I also search YouTube to watch some of the gang videos. I figure if they are dumb enough to leave a trail, why not follow it.

CAPS will talk a little about some of the gangs at beat meetings, but barely.

I don't know much about gangs in general, just a few in my hood that I follow to be aware. I actually hate spending time learning this stuff. I'd rather be doing things I love.

This address on Drake is a big problem. There have been other threads here that posted his address, but I don't believe this to be the proper place to do that. I believe 17th is well aware of this individual. I hope the aldermen (he's technically in Colon's ward, couple of blocks from Mell's, couple of blocks from Arena's, few blocks from Laurino's) are aware and working on this problem too.

Abandoned Vehicle laws/ordinances

There is an old, funky looking white Ford Bronco that has been parked on Spaulding just north of Irving Park for the past 4 weeks. Hasn't moved once.

What is the statute on abandoned vehicles? To my knowledge a vehicle is considered abandoned if it has not moved for over 1 week.

What can I do to get this vehicle relocated, aside from waiting for the next street cleaning day? How do you prove a vehicle hasn't moved for an extended period of time?

Safety Question re: Monticello Ave. (btwn Lawrence & Leland)

Hello - I am considering moving into a place on the 4700 block of Monticello and I'd like to get some feedback from current residents on the safety level in the area. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

The crime in the area is pretty much always gang related & for the most part, if you aren't doing something wrong you don't have to worry. Sure there is an occasional crime, but I never feel unsafe as a woman in this area. Get a mase, lock your front door, & you're set! :)

I'm a petite female and I run before dawn sometimes, have to walk a few blocks from the car to the apartment at night sometimes, etc. and I've never really felt uncomfortable or unsafe. That being said, I've lived in some rougher neighborhoods and I'm used to more crime/shootings/SWAT teams on our roof (again, another story), so maybe the crime around that area is just less than my past few apartments in the city. But overall, as long as you're alert and smart about what you're doing, you shouldn't have any problems. And it's a pretty cool neighborhood to live in with all the diversity around that area.

Mayor Emmanuel held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Saturday. The article doesn't mention anything about when it will open for boat rental, or who will be doing the renting. The dock is nice, and has a handy doohickey to allow people without use of their legs to launch kayaks and get in and out of them.

  • I bet those bathrooms will get creepy. Call Chris Hansen.

  • received an email newsletter from Deb Mell today still referring to the location as the River Park Boat House - they actually spent .$1.3 million on essentially a floating dock. the project was delayed because they forgot they had to comply with disabled citizens accommodation - closed all summer and opened just as the cold weather moved in. thanks guys.

I have one more post for this Veteran's Day week. Please share this information far and wide with our veterans as well as local businesses.

Also, I invite any veteran who is interested in joining our local American Legion Post (#134, Morton Grove), to contact me for more information. Dear Cook County Military Families and Merchants:

The Cook County Military and Veterans Discount Program is a public- and private-sector partnership to honor those who serve and have served. It is jointly administered by the Office of the Cook County Recorder of Deeds and the County Department of Veterans Affairs.

Our goal is to create a network of businesses and merchants who offer money-saving discounts and incentives to veterans and active-duty military, as a way of showing our gratitude. Those who wish to take advantage of this program can visit CCRD’s Veterans Service Office at 118 N. Clark, Room 120, and upon proof of service, receive a Discount/ID Card.

We hope this program will be a “win-win” – both a way to help save money for military families and a way to support businesses that support military families.

Below you will find a Registration Form with which to register your business and the discount you would like to offer. Once registered, your company’s name will be added to the Program’s promotional materials. We urge all businesses to sign up and offer military discounts year round, not just around the holidays.

If you would like more information, please call (312) 603-5788 or email Brian.Cross@CookCountyIL.gov.

Thank you to all who serve, and to those who serve them.

Sincerely,

Karen. A. Yarbrough, Recorder of Deeds
