Is this your cat?

I found this cutie in the vicinity of Sunnyside & Drake approx. 5pm Sunday (10/19). He was following various people on the street and trying to enter apartment building in the area, meowing to go inside. No one knew who he might belong to.

I found this cutie in the vicinity of Sunnyside & Drake approx. 5pm Sunday (10/19). He was following various people on the street and trying to enter apartment building in the area, meowing to go inside. No one knew who he might belong to.

Male tuxedo kitty, all black on top, white belly and paws. Seems quite young. See attached pic. Not micro-chipped and appears to be in excellent health. Very perplexed as to why this guy is not micro-chipped as he appears to be someone's loving pet.

Extremely well socialized with people, playful and not fearful at all. Did not appear to be an indoor/outdoor kitty as he did not seem familiar with cars, traffic or the outside world. Will be turning over to rescue group for proper adoption procedure if owners are not located by end of the week. He will be an extremely good find for someone looking to adopt a young male who is quite outgoing, well-behaved and friendly. Am re-posting this to various neighborhood sites, Chicago lost pet FB pages, etc.

If you believe this is your cat, please call #773-822-1700 and leave a message with call back number and email. You will be asked to provide proof of ownership and photos.

Thank you. - Heather

Girl, 14, missing from Albany Park

Police are searching for a 14-year-old girl who has been missing for almost a week from the Albany Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

Beatriz Delaluz was last seen about 2 p.m. on Oct. 12 when she left her father’s home in the 4900 block of North Lawndale, according to a missing person alert from Chicago Police.

Delaluz has been active on Facebook but hasn’t revealed where she might be, the alert said.

She is described as a 5-foot-3, 140-pound Hispanic girl, last seen carrying a black and white Jordan backpack, police said.

Anyone with information on Delaluz’s whereabouts is asked to call Area North detectives at (312) 744-8200.

Anyone hear gunshots?

Near Kedzie and Argyle. I've heard four gunshots in the past half hour. Anyone know what's going on?

Be safe!

  • I heard some bangs at the time. 1 around 8:15, another around 8:30 and 2 in quick succession at around 8:45. Wasn't sure if it was fireworks or what. Since I never heard any sirens or those police truck honks I assumed it was fireworks.

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

Did you call 911? Police resources are allocated, in part, based on 911 calls. Police response should be under ten minutes.

Opinions about Life Performance Gym on Kedzie, f/k/a BodyWorx

Hi - noticed this gym last weekend and was hoping to get people's updated opinions on it, since previous posts/Yelp reviews were quite negative. Apparently many people were upset at the outset when it was called BodyWorx and they signed people up before it opened and continued to charge their cards despite the fact that is was under construction for several more years. Now it appears to be a functional gym, but any positives or negatives from my neighbors? Thanks! Catherine

  • drewmaskreplica Albany Park Resident

I think "folks that cancelled your memberships" misses the point of what happened here:
    1) The contracted term was one year from opening, which took two-plus years to happen (double charges occurred and refunds were requested before the gym ever opened).
    2) No cancellation materials were offered as no refund was offered. His entire response amounted to "shucks. too bad."

  • E.G. Albany Park

I understand what you're saying Drew; however I'm in the process of canceling (I did not have an overall positive experience) and have little to go on. I cannot locate a copy of my contract (I doubt if I was given a copy) and when I sent an email to...

I understand what you're saying Drew; however I'm in the process of canceling (I did not have an overall positive experience) and have little to go on. I cannot locate a copy of my contract (I doubt if I was given a copy) and when I sent an email to the info email address I was told to come in and fill in a cancelation form. For LA Fitness I just printed one up and sent it in. This seems odd that the gym wants me to come in and have me fill out a cancelation on the spot, especially since the owner knows I'm not happy.

I paid bi-yearly, and am paid up until the end of the year, I just find this whole buisness is a bit shady.

What else can we do? One of our neighbors has said that Gary Carlson has been single-handedly holding back progress in Albany Park. Any of you Carlson-abutters have similar issues? What pressure can we put on him as a landlord?

Garage Repair

The garage for my building is falling apart and I'm looking for recommendations on someone who will do a good job fixing it. It's a large brick garage. I've been getting a few quotes from different places, but would love to go with someone who has done this type of work before and that has a good reputation doing a good job. Has anyone in the neighborhood had something like this done or can recommend someone?

New store taking over several storefronts on Kedzie

I just found out that several storefronts on the east side of Kedzie just south of Lawrence have cleared out their current occupants because they were purchased by a larger retailing who is moving in and totally re-doing the space.
One person mentioned this might be a Ross store. Has anyone heard anything about this? Any other ideas?

  • Cheryl, Golden Crust had sanitary violations over the summer. The details were listed on Every Block.

Worth getting a quote from Chicagoland Remodeling, Inc. They just did our bathroom (looks great!) and came well under the other six or so quotes we obtained. Plus they were fast and scheduled the job as soon as we were ready. We had a couple of communication glitches that meant they had to re-do some minor things. They were quick to comply and make it right. My advice is that if you work with any contractor, sit down and go over every detail with the person who is actually going to be doing the job (they subcontract), in addition to communicating your vision with the primary contractor/company reps.

Gunshots near Kimball and Carmen?

Did anyone else hear what sounded like 4-6 shots about 15 minutes ago, so like 11:15 pm? My window was open in my kitchen and it was loud enough for me to hear in my living room with the TV on. Sewer Backup

Neighbors: as residents of Albany Park, I assume a large number of you have had to deal with basement flooding during heavy rains, caused primarily from ancient street sewer lines ill-equipped to manage the load. I have had a variety of "professionals" come and assess the situation, but haven't been satisfied with their solutions—mostly because I get the sense they're trying to sell me more than I need. Can anyone recommend someone reasonable and trusted to help solve our problem?

  • I would advise against filling drains in. If you have leaks elsewhere in the pipes, the sewer pressure will drive it through them and into your soil or below your slab or look for an alternate pathway. Now you have effluent/storm water 'somewhere' and a greater risk of subsidence and floor motion/cracking, etc. Its not cheap, but get it done right, document it, and pass on to the new owner who will appreciate it as much as their home inspector will when you sell.

  • We have a check valve between the street and the house, with a bypass pump to move your house's sewage out (around the check valve) when the valve is closed. Yes, if power goes off the bypass pump will not function but the likelihood of power outage at the exact...

    Read full comment…

We have a check valve between the street and the house, with a bypass pump to move your house's sewage out (around the check valve) when the valve is closed. Yes, if power goes off the bypass pump will not function but the likelihood of power outage at the exact same time as a long-lasting closed check valve is very low.

Yes, it costs $6,000 or more, and (no one has mentioned this yet) it needs annual maintenance. But it's worth it. We had 4 basement floods in 3 years. Up to 6 inches of storm water came in from the soil under the basement, leaking under heavy pressure through the sewer pipe joints and then up through the saturated soil and through cracks in the cement basement floor. Since installing the check valve, no flooding whatsoever. Our neighbors continue to have flooded basements.

If your flooding is coming from or over the foundation and down the walls of the basement, it's surface water. Diverting downspouts out of the storm sewer on to your yard will make surface flooding worse, not better. For that you need to try rain barrels, corrected grading etc., not a check valve. If surface flooding can't be corrected that way, then you need a sump pump and drain field around the inside perimiter of the basement. Also not cheap.

If you have both surface flooding and sewer backup, you have my sincere condolences.

The annual maintenance for the check valve and bypass pump costs $85.00 from our vendor. But last time they did it they found a worn-out $300 part and replaced it at no cost under the guarantee (after 8 years). Eventually the pump will give out, but . . . it's worth the cost of replacing it when that happens.

Ours was installed by Xpert Flood Control on Montrose near Central Park. I can recommend them highly. They're local. Our neighbor.

Xpert Flood Control at (773) 267-5000

google for them, check them on Angie's List -- highly recommended
