Little boys on 53rd and King Drive throwing rocks at the senior residents

A group of boys are throwing rocks at TRC Senior Village residents. The group of boys have vandalize the building and cars of the residents. If you see the boys throwing the rocks at the seniors, cars or building windows please help us redirect the behavior.

On 7/21/2014 TRC boarded up the window on Calumet side of the building cost to nonprofit $1500

On 7/30/2014 the boys threw another rock at a seniors windshield the cost to residents is $200.

Month of July 6 seniors have been assaulted with rocks thrown at them

  • TRC I did already check your website after your initial post and noticed that you have a donation link on every page with 6 payment options. That's fine, donations are important in your industry. I simply did not like the disingenuous tone of the OP. #mypersonalopinion.

Oh, and believe me I do quite a bit re: societal ills, just on my own dime.

  • Trc Wabash TRC is a nonprofit in Bronzeville

No problem Anna this is America and you are entitled to feelings and a personal opinion

How about you help the community tell the boys to stop throwing rocks and called the police when you see a crime being committed

In closing if know anyone that is short on a dime (unlike you ) please forward TRCWABASH.org contact information so we can help them regain self-sufficiency

CHA not honoring their commitments in Bronzeville?!

Questions:
1. Does this model work?
2. Where have the displaced folks lived since the high rises came down?
3. For those intent on returning, isn't it better to have adequate schools, grocery stores, jobs, and community resources that will provide a higher standard of living for everyone?

I believe that CHA should sell much more land they hold to private developers, especially in Bronzeville where the concentration of public/subsidized housing outpaces most every other community in the city, to my understanding.

CHA land is not akin to Palestine. There is no "right of return" . There should be term limits to the time folks can live in CHA and also time limits to the section 8 program. Super vouchers definitely need to cease immediately. No one is owed a luxury apartment at a cost of 2-3 times what other program recipients receive. It would be interesting to know exactly how the people who have received luxury super vouchers, were put on that list.

If there is all of this free/subsidized rent being passed out, why can't I receive a subsidized mortgage for several years, or at least make me whole on the equity lost since I bought 8 years ago? I'm not serious about that of course but why do regular working folks often have to always pay for others who aren't working year in and out or have made bad decisions that make them unmarketable to employers?

A safety net is definitely crucial for society but some seem to dwell in the net and don't want to get themselves out of it.

This article almost made me puke. I wouldn't be surprised if CHA doled out favors for a select few on this.

On March 12, 2009, Madoff pleaded guilty to 11 federal felonies and admitted to turning his wealth management business into a massive Ponzi scheme that defrauded thousands of investors of billions of dollars. Madoff said he began the Ponzi scheme in the early 1990s. However, federal investigators believe the fraud began as early as the mid-1980s[17] and may have begun as far back as the 1970s,[18] and those charged with recovering the missing money believe the investment operation may never have been legitimate.[19] The amount missing from client accounts, including fabricated gains, was almost $65 billion.[20] The court-appointed trustee estimated actual losses to investors of $18 billion.[19] On June 29, 2009, Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison, the maximum allowed.[21][22]

Poor families use 'supervouchers' to rent in city's priciest buildings

Interesting move by the CHA. Not sure I agree with paying up to $3k to rent an apartment. They should consider lowering that amount.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The high-rise at 500 N. Lake Shore Drive is the second-most expensive in the city, with rents for a one-bedroom apartment approaching $3,000 a month, well beyond the reach of most Chicago residents.

But that's not too much for the Chicago Housing Authority, which has used federal tax dollars to pick up most of the tab for four lucky residents in the year-old building, with its sweeping views of Lake Michigan, a concierge and a dog-grooming center.

The tenants moved in over the past two years as part of a push by the CHA to expand its housing voucher program so that more low-income residents can leave the city's roughest neighborhoods and start a new life in places with low poverty and crime and close to good schools and jobs.

Yet some landlords say it's a mistake to use scarce tax dollars to pay ultra-high rents for a fortunate few when more than 15,000 people sit on the CHA's voucher waiting list.

“This is nuts,” says landlord Tony Rossi, president of Chicago-based RMK Management Corp., who describes himself as a liberal Democrat. “In a situation where you're dealing with a low-income person, do they really need a 25th-floor apartment with a lake view? It just doesn't make sense to me.”

  • lisadee, thankfully the story also ran on abc7 last night (july 28th) at 10pm. now, we need to make some noise about this. it must stop!
either that or i need to find out how to get myself one of those "supervouchers" as i would love to live super-life in that building though it is out of my price range even with the same full-time job i have held for 30 years. so glad i can help someone else who's not necessarily working enjoy it, though. not!

Promontory Restaurant/Bar to Open Shortly Before the Apocalypse

Oft-delayed restaurant and live music venue, Promontory, is scheduled to open as the End of Days approaches, according to informed sources. "Our two outdoor patios will offer splendid views of the Four Horsemen as they ride in to lay waste to humanity," said an unnamed soon to be out of work employee. "Try our BBQ" he added.

  • zgwarnki Now, I can say Kenwood. Thanks, Obama!

Adrienne, I crashed the friends and family event on the 17th and have legitimately dined and drank at The Promontory two other times since the official grand opening last Wednesday. So far, I can safely say that it was worth the wait. Working my way through both food and drink menus with good results. As of now, the summer fruit trifle is my favorite food item. Eagerly awaiting the opening of the upstairs live music venue. Why didn't Diana and other people there of whom I inquired about you recognize your name?

  • I did not work on this project. My boss has several other businesses that I work on, on the commercial real estate side, but I stay away from the restaurant stuff. But I'm glad you enjoyed it! The first show upstairs is in August. I am excited too!

Which building do you live in? It kind of sounds like you might be from Wesley just trying to save face I have valid complaints that I can back-up with emails that prove that Nic tried to bully me into not getting a second opinion from the vendor of my choice. Beyond not doing his due diligence in making sure the work under my unit actually was necessary, I have yet to receive an apology from Nic nor has he thanked me for basically doing his job.

To make matters worse, I've also come to find out that VanDerBosch recommended unnecessary work to another building Wesley manages. The work was stopped at the last minute (not sure about the details.) This should have been a HUGE red flag to Nic to take extra care to make sure our building needed the work, wouldn't you agree?

Nic's has since been at the hub of a few other mess-ups. I'm not one to keep quiet when I've been wronged and find it my duty to spread the word as much as possible so that other's don't get taken advantage of.

Maracas is open

A new Latin restaurant, Maracas, recently opened in Bronzeville. People should give it a try. I hope to stop by next week.

http://www.suntimes.com/lifestyles/28320016-423/the-312-founder-of-boriqua-chicks-open-latin-restaurant-maracas-in-bronzeville.html

  • Tried Maracas last week. We had the empanadas (? Spelling) dinner. The flavor was good but they may have been over cooked because the crust was dark and a little dry. The price $8 included two empanadas over a bed of rice & beans with a side of plantines and mango sauce. I look forward to trying other items on the menu. Time correction, they close at 8pm on Saturdays.

  • Juan from South Loop 13 year South Loop resident

I tried Maracas today. I had the Beef Steak with Yellow Rice. The flavor was nice and the portions was good. The steak could have been a little more tender but was still very good. Look forward to trying the Beef stew on my next visit.

Jazz at the DuSable

Yesterday they had a tribute to the late, great John Coltrane at the DuSable Museum located in Washington Park. Playing the Coltrane standards were Ari Brown, Duke Payne, Rajiv Halim, and a sixteen year old up and coming Iasaiah Collier. This was a beautiful concert set in the confines of this historic venue and the Musicians did not disappoint. The thought that came to me is that since we have bought a portion of Gospelfest to the Southside of town, why not Jazzfest? The bones of this great Genre lie right here and to bring to life all the venues where this great art form took hold, now this could be something. What do you think?

  • Bronzeville Curmudgeon Director, Bronzeville Visitor Information Center

Ray, we think that it is a great idea to host a International Jazz festival in Bronzeville!

Bronzeville Visitor Information Center would be more than happy to help organize such an event.

Do you remember the Jazz in the Alley events?
