Moving to Chicago

Hello,

I was wondering what a good place to live in Chicago that isn't too far from mount sinai hospital. My budget seems to only allow me to look at places in the south like bronzeville. I am a single female so any advice would be appreciated!

  • Jennifer Bridgeport to Bucktown and some places in between

Bridgeport is a great place to live with great neighbors.

  • Michael Ramstedt Managing Broker, Krain Real Estate

Check out UIC West campus "Tri-Taylor". Between I-290 on the north, Roosevelt Rd on the south, Damen on the east and Western on the west. I have been living here for 27 years and selling and renting real estate for 20 years. I always gets 15-20 apartments each year in...

I have been living here for 27 years and selling and renting real estate for 20 years. I always gets 15-20 apartments each year in the neighborhood. Its one of the best neighborhoods in the city . . UIC and medical students . . . downtown working professionals . .and families. Mt Sinai is only 5-10minutes by car or bus down Ogden Ave to the SW. 1 Brs run $700-$1000. 2 BRs run $800-$1200. I actually have a 1 BR heat included for $950 right now.

Gun Violence explodes across City

Over 30 people shot in a weekend and we are only in April, maybe I am naïve in thinking this, but could Drugs be the problem here. The only other time we had this level of violence was during prohibition. My thinking is when the alcohol ban was lifted the violence problem went away. I see open air drug dealing going on uninterrupted 24/7 like it's a 7/11 and not even an ounce of fear on these drug dealers faces of being arrested, well now the shooting involves children, women, at all times of day and night, and we have no answers. Well something has gotta give or this will be the end of us all.

There are think tanks, under the radar planners even as I type this who have at this time a plan in place for the future of Bronzeville and you do not have a seat at that table, now the flip side of this, yesterday there was a meeting for the residents of the south loop at the 2nd Presbyterian church to discuss the final plans of the construction of several projects on cermak rd and Motor row where 200 people were said to have attended. Until we become unified with ourselves and our political representatives we must swallow whatever is shoved down our throats.

It would be great if there were a few additional points of contact to promote these ward meetings. I live within a block of the park, but didn't get a door flyer. I got the email about 8 days in advance, but that may not be advanced enough for some people. Everyblock and Nextdoor would be great community forums to share these events, lots of engaged community members here. Also, a recap or summary would be helpful for those unable to attend. Maybe we could share the presentations via email and online. Sometimes life gets in the way and it would be nice to have access to this info when it does. It's sort of like sending out meeting minutes in a corporate setting. Thanks for hosting these meetings and I look forward to a robust conversation about both development plans.

Lu Palmer's House

It's really sad what has happened to Lu's house over on King Drive, this is another sore eye for Bronzeville, Even the property where CBUC used to have meetings looks condemned. A beautiful red-brick structure has fallen on to hard times. Even the nearby Bronzeville Bed and Breakfast closed, never to return as of yet. Preservation needs to be taken more serious on the south side, cause when it's gone, it's gone! (See Picture).

  • Danie Lifelong Bronzeville resident and environmentalist

Who has ownership of the Lou Palmer building?

  • TM BVille 8 year resident

BC seems as if you have some misdirected anger issues going on with that nonsensical rant. Why don't you find a way forward with some of these properties instead of spouting nonsense?

If you are so smart, you can find money to preserve these structures. Since you are taking credit for saving other buildings, why not apply the same blueprint to saving more? I'm highly skeptical you had a major role in any of the buildings you mentioned in the first place.

As a resident I want to be able to support local businesses, however this last week made me wonder if our local business owners just don't care or take our business for granted. We went to one establishment one night for dinner, the place was somewhat dirty, the front door smeared with hand prints. I always look at a front door as your initial impression and it should be kept clean. So just by chance, we happened to return two nights later, only to see the same smears on the glass. So in two days, no one thought to clean the door? So we left, I didn't want to think about the kitchen. Ironically, we went to a nearby place, it too was dirty, and the service was surly.

These weren't fast food establishments either, not that that's an excuse for dirt when/where dealing with food service. Such a shame, I want to tell friends to come out to BV, but can't, how can I when I question returning to these spots myself.

Dear Erica in Bronzeville and those self serving, arrogant, plutocratic "top down" black politicians in Chicago!

If Bronzeville elected officials were progressive in advocating for city and state resources from heritage tourism development in under served predominantly African American neighborhoods in Chicago, they would have incorporated an subsidy initiative with the state legislation on the McCormick Place expansion of a new hotel and the DePaul Basketball stadium, that would have provided some financial resources for the development of Bronzevlle as a international heritage tourism destination.

Both the Mayor and the Governor could have also sponsored set asides in the legislation that could have benefited heritage tourism development in African American neighborhoods.

Since our governor, mayor and incumbent black democratic elected officials continue to take African American voters in Chicago for granted, the reality of less than 20% voter turn out in the democratic primary election, bodes well for the republicans in the general election come November 2014!

In my limited experiences, we as blacks have for the most part voted for blacks or those we felt met our needs at a particular time. Some of our clergy have stood with folks I deemed traitors to the community as well as well as those I believed to have our interest at heart! In today's political, economical, and social climate, we must adapt to different ways of getting what we want as a people and community. Today two men rang my doorbell claiming to be from ComEd and Peoples Gas. They stated that they wanted to make sure that I was receiving the best energy rates. I told them that I was busy, but shortly thereafter I heard my wrought iron gate banging, as If someone was wrenching it open.

I immediately went downstairs to see what the noise was and one of the men was holding my iron gate open. I assume they both were hoping that someone in my building would blindly buzz them in the inner door. When they saw me come down the stairs, they ran off.

For safety purposes, we must make sure we know who we are buzzing in our property. If they say they are from utility companies, we need to ask for Identification, especially if we have not requested service.

We all must be vigilant in this fight against crime...

Lord knows I have been a vocal and written critic of the two of you, but you also must give praise when it is due. I begin to see the improvement and the direction that you have Bronzeville going and I must say the arrow is pointing up. This is by no means a declaration that we are where we want to be, but I feel a lot better short and long term with the progress that has taken place. Rebuilding a neglected area after over 50 years of outright neglect is a very daunting task, but you begin to see and feel the positive vibes flowing through the community as Business joins with politics and lends it ear to the community, well this is when good happens. I doubt if any area has the challenges that are present in Bronzeville but you are meeting them Great job.

  • Mell, Erica, Rob and Ray..yes. UNITY! Now, what would that look like? Is it a community led planning document that sets guidelines and standards ,for what type of development is and isn't acceptable? Or is it a meeting of all the various stakeholders like BAARC, BRI, TRC, QCDC, CNH, CMAP, etc coming together and signing an accord that can be shown downtown? ?

  • Erica in Bronzeville 9-yr Bronzeville Resident

Chris, I think all of the Bronzeville groups and its stakeholders (i.e., residents, business owners, renters, homeowners) should come together and get on one accord regarding the vision. I don't think it should be complicated because you want ppl to be able to easily understand and articulate it. This vision should be for the people by the people.

Huffington Post Features Young Mayoral Candidate

Though challenges may abound like in most things in life, we just have to pursue our dreams and convictions regardless of what others think. Just my 6 cents :-) Thought I'd share. Thank you.

I'm becoming a little bit obsessed with her. She definitely has won my vote!

Sadly, she has an uphill battle against the Tea Party funded Rahm, and the Daley endorsed Ald Fioretti.
