This past weekend they held an open house where places of historical importance and buildings that are architecturally significant were opened for observation for all interested parties. Well you need not remind those of us who call this home that this would be a glorious revelation for anyone who had no experience in this area of the city, and we did not disappoint, all over the media are stunning pictures and reports from the people who came here this past weekend to discover what we already knew. Something I have known all along is this, there is a marvelous history here and tho some may not be interested in mentioning it less alone preserving it, but remember when you to do not know where you came from you will never understand where you are going.

Bronzeville and Chinatown

I went walking, shopping and eating in Chinatown for the second time this year, I had a good time - very interesting restaurant where the staff is dressed in 1960s era Red Chinese military uniforms. Big posters of Mao on wall. Crawfish dish was extremely spicy but good.

I note that the buildings and sidewalks in Chinatown are beat up and old. Bronzeville infer structure looks a lot better, housing stock looks a lot better, but there doesn't seem to be much to do, no where to shop.

Chinatown is bustling with merchants, hundreds of places to shop and buy things, lots of foot traffic. Why can't Bronzeville have more of that?

Agreed Sean els, will be downtown tomorrow at Daley Plaza for the Youth rally against mass incarceration!!!

  • sean els Returned to Hyde Park Kenwood

Best of luck BC with the rally. Try to also educate some "youths" at the rally to dress a little better, wear belts to keep their pants up, avoid anarchists, various "mafias" and most all my relatives - especially my relatives, total losers, bad news, nothing good with them.

What we need is a commitment in our neighbor from the mayor and our aldermen to enforce tenant rights and stop letting these slumlords pay them off to avoid taking their assessment to housing court instead of administrative hearings. They are the cause of poor CHA housing. I'm tired of hearing about low income people living in Bronzeville and we should only have home owners and black owned businesses here. Most black folks are low income because it's good for white folks and black people who think they have made it.

  • Okay!

  • I went to the new walmart on sunday and noticed that they sale liquor, but they didn't have half pint and pints.so they have two liquor stores within 3 blocks of each other,so one has to go,ziad liquor sales 22oz,40oz,half pints, pints, the favorite of the whino.

The condition flourishes when people on both sides of the divide are too self interested. If the low income residents are pushed out, the same process will be used to displace the middle income folks when more affluent people want the area. Walmart is not a high end retailer, the current level of development seems to have a high regard for the low income dollars, I suggest we have respect for the low income people.

I thought we were supposed to have some type of home court, Chicago advantage as the race conditions were wet and rather cool/cold. Surely these mountain, warm weather Black African runners from Kenya shouldn't be able to do so well on a cold, wet Chicago October Sunday. But what happens....

Kenyans win again!

Did anyone in Bronzeville see any of the race when it went through Bronzeville?

Are the Kenyans doing something secret - have Kenya African lions chase them in key stretches of the race?

What's going on here!

:-)

I lived in Kenya for a couple of years so can provide a little more specific context. Most of the successful Kenya runners are from the Kalenjin tribe. The Kalenjin are one of 40+ tribes in Kenya, each with their own language and culture, though most everyone speak Swahili as a second language, and English if they've graduated high school (only 25% of people, but rising quickly as Kenya get richer).

As mentioned by others, the Kalenjin homeland is indeed at higher altitude, so that helps with lung development and training. Success also breeds success. There are running clubs in Kalenjin-land and great coaches there that help develop talent through a lot of hard work.

An NPR article on the topic if you want to learn more:

    Enjoy.

  • Great additional info, Ben. If I had more time I'd keep adding more tidbits, but I'm living the old Kenyan tradition (not being practiced so much by urban folks) of caring for both elderly and grandchildren!

Walmart 47th

Went there yesterday had a good experience! Hope it stays consistent. Parking lot a bit tight and could be a bit hectic on weekends I imagine.

I think it will do well if they managed properly.

  • Would you say it's similar to the city Target location on State St?

No I think this one is more focused on groceries

  • Juan from South Loop 13 year South Loop resident

Have you been to the Walmart Neighborhood stores on West 47th or downtown at Presidential Towers? They are both nice grocery stores.

Redevolopment of 43rd street between Indiana and King?

This is Bronzeville chance to build a entertainment district. The city issued a RFP for 43rd street. It covers many properties from Indiana to King drive. Maybe this can become Bronzeville version of Hyde Park's 53rd street(Harper Court) area.

I personally think the JJ Fish property should have been included in the RFP ;).

Credence Independent Management Advisors: Certifications

Capability Model Maturity Integration (CMMI) Level 3

Credence has been appraised by Teradata Corporation at Level 3 of the CMMI Institute’s Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI). An appraisal at Maturity Level 3 for Credence means that the standards, process descriptions, and procedures for a particular project can be tailored from Credence’s set of standard processes and therefore are more consistent by the tailoring guidelines. At Maturity Level 3, processes are managed more proactively using an understanding of the inter-relationships of the process activities and detailed measures of the process, its work products, and its services.

Filiming on Cottage near 37th the other day???

Hi,

Just curious, does anyone know what was filming on Cottage Grove by the Mercy building?

  • My neighbor told me that Chicago Fire was shooting in the area last week too. Or maybe a week and a half ago. She walks my dog during the day for me and she walked him down to the set. She told me that all the crew loved him. It may have been another show too. I don't know how much television she watches as she's never home.

  • Happy making better choices

    Thanks

Sadly, there are too many in the neighborhood who object loudly to the new folks who buy in and fix up because they fear "Gentrification."I don't get their logic.

Secondly, we all have to get used to the fact that there will be hundreds of thousands of new low wage workers who will grab whatever jobs they can and they will vote democratic so the President wants them. Immigration will not be stopped. More competition for the young black males who want entry level jobs and if the min wage goes up you are not likely to see anyone twirling signs any more or any simple stuff like that.

Joe, Obama and Valerie Jarrett can't FORCE black men to work. Many immigrants WANT to work and they will DO anything they can to support their families. Clean toilets, manual labor, working in the kitchen. How many black men hanging out on 47th everyday would do that kind of work for minimum wage OR LESS? There are some I'm sure but not many... it's too easy to collect welfare or live at home with mom. It's time to stop expecting a handout and get out there. Get an education (beyond high school) and work to succeed in a chosen career. Not everyone has to be a physician or computer geek. Cable guys and garbage men make excellent money. I'm tired of hearing excuses. Immigrants have their own hurdles too but they don't complain. They just keep their heads down while jumping on any opportunity granted to them. Let's stop playing the blame game. Obama nor his advisors can solve the world's problems. People must take responsibility for themselves. Furthermore, immigrants aren't taking anything from anyone in my opinion. Most of the black men who would be recruited for the jobs immigrants take wouldn't accept those jobs.

Transplant, I could have written a similar post. We moved here from Bucktown.

BC, am I missing something? I don't see where Transplant says they're White, they maybe, perhaps I missed it on another thread? In any event, I did have one of my living room windows have a rock thrown into it shattering it to bits, this happened about a week after I asked a kid and his girlfriend to quiet down in front of my place, they were arguing, the kid maybe 16-18 told me to mind my own business and that he can yell at her if he wants to, I told them to stop or I'd call the cops. He then went on to say, "how about you suck my Black D..." I guess he was trying to shock me? I really don't care if someone is Purple, I just don't want a fight outside of my house. Another time, while driving up Indiana, at the light by 31st., a even younger teenager yelled at my car, "hey White B..ch" so saying, "By the way, delinquent black youth do not attack white people inhabiting Bronzeville." These were verbal attacks, and to deny there isn't tension is naive.

With that said, I still chose to live here, because to come to the conclusion that all Black youth feel this way is shortsighted. I had experienced the same when we moved to Bucktown, by a young Hispanic girl. She called me a Yuppie, and that this is my hood, and to get out. I then informed her that my family had been in the hood for over 20 years. Fact is when neighborhoods have a majority, any majority there is tension. Same shameful thing on the West side of the city and White flight.

    cont..

But people need to know the reality, I know as a White person in BV not everyone is glad to see me, same as my Black friends that live in Highland Park their experience also is mostly good, but every once in a while they run into some BS flack, like we do.

The brain, it turns out, has a GPS-like function that enables people to produce mental maps and navigate the world — a discovery for which three scientists won the Nobel Prize in medicine Monday.
