Do You Use the Des Plaines River Trail On a Regular Basis?

Just wondering who is using the mostly dirt trail and how frequently? Are you walking, running and/or biking? Are you a regular user, and if so, why? Do you know of any groups using the trail on a regular basis?

I read some reviews of the trail at the below link and even walked parts of it alone and with family with mixed reaction. It is beautiful indeed and close to home but not well maintained nor marked in Cook County. Also, I hear the trail's condition is a bit better next to Rosemont and further north.

It would be great to increase its use and to improve its condition to at least match the condition found in Lake County.

Big Sam, you must be referring to Schiller Pond? Are you from Irving Woods, like me? Yes, I realize the city is not directly responsible for the area, but it should have an influence over it. Des Plaines and Rosemont, based on a quick research and even being involved with Rosemont's survey, do take interests in the trail and so should we. A well designed and maintained trail and nature areas do have a profound impact on the quality of life for the residents and visitors. It even impacts the values of the nearby property. It draws people in from other areas, too, and thus can have the potential to impact local economy. My new neighbor even used some trails to commute to work at one time, thus eliminating some care emissions. He told me some trails, not ours, are even lit at night.

In the recent Chicago Tribune I quickly read about Next Century Conservation Plan for the Cook County, which will costs approx. $40 million a year with no well identified funding source. I agree with Mark Spreyer, an executive director of the Stillman Nature Center who objects to the plan by saying: "The public prefers forests," he said, "but we're getting prairie shoved down our throats.

I do believe that trees are what we need to save us from the green house effect and we need well working and maintained trails to help our families get healthy and stay healthy, to cut down on emissions and to get creatively connected to other communities.

Instead of spending money on trying to recreate the life from 200 years ago and displacing the current wildlife, I would hope that we invest the funds to improve our trails, move them away from the river, add gravel or crushed limestone and even add boardwalks whenever it makes sense. We should also improve our local camp ground in Thatcher Woods, our Trailside Museum and even provide better site programming and its marketing.

Big Sam, I would likely pursue the local matter with the FPD and its Cook County Commissioners, if the local community would join in on the mission.

Our Chuy sign was stolen last night from in front of our house! It was very firmly secured in the ground of our flower-bed, right under the front windows. The sign sat undisturbed for several weeks in that location, so I really don't think it was stolen by a neighbor. I phoned Chuy's Northwest Region Field Office to find out if they have any window signs. When I mentioned that our sign had been stolen, the Field Director told me in a resigned manner that it had been happening all over the city, that there was nothing they could do about it. This is really low, and I'm guessing it's a well organized effort.

While driving on Irving Park yesterday I saw Rahm for Chicago signs along the median strip. I thought that campaign signs weren't permitted there.

We're picking up new signs today.

  • Old time politics.
Best to put them in your window.

  • The actions of the perps really back-fired, as our windows are now covered with Chuy signs. We've fashioned a yard sign as well. :-)

  • I saw a car stop on Oak Park Avenue and someone get out and pull down a big Gilbert Villegas sign. I guess people don't have respect for others' opinions.

CPS Expands Charter Schools Despite Fiscal Crisis, Empty Seats, Low Enrollment

Chicago – April 2, 2015 – In an independent investigation of Chicago Public Schools (CPS) data from the 2014-15 school year, parent education advocacy group Raise Your Hand has revealed that there are currently 12,637 empty seats in existing charter schools based on the CPS threshold for ideal enrollment. This equates to 64 schools or 50 percent of Chicago charter schools.

Why continue to expand charters when enrollment at CPS is lower than it has been in decades? Yet CPS added 21,251 new seats mainly in charter, contract and privately run high schools while closing 50 district-run schools for "under-utilization."

Check out this wonderful infographic for more information about the issue:

Source for content below: ICHE Legislative Task Force Alert E-mail.

Background:
Many types of special needs issues families deal with directly impact a child's ability to attend school regularly. Parents with special needs kids need more understanding, more flexibility, more grace with attendance issues. House Bill 3402 bill does just the opposite. It treats them more harshly.

Virtually every time there is an effort to toughen truancy laws, it's because the EXISTING truancy laws are not being enforced.

This bill would allow the parent of a child to be jailed for six months rather than one month. Kids with special needs rely on their parents possibly even more heavily than kids without special needs. Who will take care of these kids if their parents are jailed for six months? If the child's special needs are causing the irregular attendance, will they jail the next caretaker, too?

It is unfair to discriminate and treat parents more harshly just because their child has more needs than others.

The first and most powerful advocates for a child with special needs are the parents. It's bad policy to attack the ones primarily responsible for protecting the child.

This bill unconstitutionally discriminates against parents of children receiving special education services.

The bill would not directly impact families with special needs children who are not receiving--and do not wish to receive--special education services.

House Bill 3402-which would increase the penalties for truancy if a child is receiving special education services-is very unlikely to receive further consideration in the Illinois Legislature this year because it failed to emerge from committee in the House by the March 27 deadline. It is no longer a threat for this calendar year.

So far the goal is to get together on Saturdays during the summer, 2:30-5:00 PM. We have not decided on the frequency, weekly, biweekly or what-not, yet and suggestions are welcomed. We only ask that the player be of a grammar school age, with at least basic chess knowledge, attending or hoping to attend chess tournaments. The parent or caretaker must be present on-site during the whole play session. The library has 9 chess sets, which can serve 18 players. If we go beyond that number, then we ask that you bring in your home chess set. If you are interested in such happenings, please stay tuned to this post or contact me or DPL management.

"A new report being released this morning shows that the supposedly budget-strapped Windy City – which for years has not made its full pension payments – actually has mountains of cash sitting in a slush fund controlled by Mayor Rahm Emanuel. Indeed, as the report documents, the slush fund now receives more money each year than it would cost to adequately finance Chicago’s pension funds. Yet, Emanuel is refusing to use the cash from that slush fund to shore up the pensions. Instead, his new pension “reform” proposal cuts pension benefits, requires higher contributions from public employees and raises property taxes in the name of fiscal responsibility. Yet, the same “reform” proposal will actually quietly increase his already bloated slush fund.

But it gets worse: an investigation by Pando has discovered that Emanuel has been using that same slush fund to enrich some of his biggest campaign contributors."

So far 10 trees have been removed. As we speak another is being cut. This started at 8:30 am. There was no posting on the tree or anywhere near it. I have called the City and have been told its cause of the ash bettle. None of the trees on my block have been or looked sick. They bloom every year, from top to bottom. My neighboor had hers removed because she hated it. And had a process to go through to do so. Shortly after that is when they started chopping them down left and right. When you looked at the cut down trees they were healthy, there was no sign of any infestation. When I asked the city why, I was told ALL OF THE ASH TREES ARE INFESTED, AND THEY WILL BE REMOVING THEM ALL. Also no new trees will be placed back unless the owner wants to have them come and do it. I think there is also a fee for that. My neighboor on the other side of the lady who had hers removed, he is refusing to have his cut down. So there has been talk between the neighboor on the other side n the one who had the tree removed. I think its disgusting. Our neighboorhood looks like garbage now. All the fresh air that we get from this polluted city is getting harder to get.

I was wondering how we go about this. He and his wife want to join in getting trees back on Mason ave. The tree provided shade and they are upset. So if anyone can help us out please get ahold of me. If anyone is interested in keeping the chess enthusiasm going at Dunning Public Library, we hope to hear from you. Could you volunteer your chess knowledge? It would be awesome to have quarterly chess seminars for the new and the not-so-new to chess.

Also, I heard that the Chicago Park District is planning to provide chess instruction to their staff this spring. This extra knowledge is expected to be incorporated into the summer park camp activities. At least one of our local parks has chess sets already, which they have used many years back. Thus, opportunities are being created to grow the love for chess. Perhaps, we could even get park chess clubs.

Nice block doesn't always yield nice neighbors

I live on Parkside and wellington and if anyone is looking for a nicer group of neighbors I'd like to say it's NOT HERE!! ppl are rude and disrespectful of other people's property. I can go on but what's the point. I will be looking for a new area come spring. I was thinking maybe Humboldt park. At least there ppl are real.

  • Craig Born and raised in the city.

I recall two shootings there last year. No one saw or heard a thing. But yet some how bullets made holes in a car and a person.

  • Tell me why ppl are still calling dibs on parking. I can't even leave my house for fear of not finding a parking when I get back. Talked to alderman office 2x ..promises promises

Dunning Conservation area gazebo collapsed

So sad to have seen the new gazebo built last summer, has collapsed, and I hope they will rebuild!!

  • cc...was that the tool shed in the community garden near the Streets & San yard? Or was it some other building elsewhere?

  • cheesecake chick i want to be the person my dog thinks i am

it was a "gazebo" or picnic shelter. it was open air, so I doubt anyone would use it for a tool shed.......you can see it from oak park avenue, in the parking lot.
