Weathering the Storm

Even though the Illinois economy has rebounded since 2009, nonprofits are still having difficulty, given the state's budget cuts. I am in the process of developing memes that will help you weather the storm. I have shared the first four, and will be sharing more periodically. Enjoy and share.

Illinois Budget Cut Updates, and Why North Lawndale Residents Should Be Especially Concerned

As you know, the Governor is in the process of filling a $1.6 billion budget gap for FY 2015 and a $6 billion budget gap for FY 2016. I have shared links to budget updates that you should find useful. I have also shared an infographic that shows why North Lawndale residents, in particular, should be concerned. Given the similar dynamics in East and West Garfield, and Austin, you might find this information of interest as well.

Found Dog

This dog was found wandering on Cullerton near Oakley. She was wearing a harness and is friendly. She knew some commands so is certainly someone's pet. We could not keep her, so she was turned in to Chicago Animal Care & Control at 2700 S. Western. She will be held on stray hold for 3 days for her owners to claim her. After 3 days she is available for rescues to pull her. After 5 days she becomes eligible for euthanasia.

Please share so that her owners can claim her.

FYI, I have posted on CraigsList, Lost Dogs Illinois and here. I have also put up flyers.

As stated in my original post, she is friendly. She is a large pit bull/boxer mix.

As for the comments about CACC, it is an open-access shelter, meaning that is legally required to take in every animal that is brought through its doors. That is about 20-25 thousand animals per year. Unfortunately, there are not enough homes for all of those pets, so euthanasia does occur. The current live rate for dogs is about 60%. The live rate for cats was about 90% earlier this year.

If you would like to make a difference in the lives of these pets, here are some steps that you can take:
    - spay/neuter your own pets
    - adopt, don't shop for pets Plenty of great pets can be found for adoption at CACC or one of their partner rescues.
    - volunteer with CACC or one of the rescues that pulls from the CACC.
    - donate to one of the many animal rescues in town.
    - share information about lost pets and adoptables with your social media circle.

Here is a good place to start for information:

Cats are disproportionately killed at shelters. Friendly cats can appear to be feral, due to the environment. Uninterested or inexperienced staff members do not necessarily scan cats, pit bulls, rotties, etc. for microchips (first hand experience), regardless of the ordinance that says they will/must. Taking any animal there during the recent outbreak of canine flu (which the CDC now reports can be transmitted to cats) is a death sentence itself. DO NOT take puppies or kittens to any of these open access shelters at this time. Find another way, foster if you can. If you contact a rescue and volunteer to foster the animal you find, most times they will provide medical and other supplies as long as you can keep the animal in your home until they can find another foster home or it's adopted from your home. AWL, ACS or CACC are not places for seniors or babies of any species on a good day, with this outbreak it's worse.

More Thanks

While the original committee members produced the bid that we benefit from now, there are so many others to thank for the position we enjoy now:
• Roberta Cosey of Neighborhood Housing Services who first posed the question, “Wouldn’t it be nice if it were built on the Westside?”
• Bobbie Steele, the first female President of the Cook County Board of Commissioners was one the first to step forward with continuing moral and logistical support
• The K-Town Historic...

• Alan Channing, President of Mount Sinai Hospital, who cemented that credibility
• The Illinois Chapter of N.O.M.A. (The National Organization of Minority Architects) for their technical contributions in the creation of our bid
• And last but by no means least, Valerie F. Leonard of The Lawndale Alliance, who’s considerable organizational, community and social media skills kept the dream of an engaged, educated and motivated community alive

Presidential Library Decision

Chicago’s mayoral runoff election is tomorrow, Tuesday, April 7th. The Obama Foundation announced in March that in order not to influence that election, the announcement of the final decision on the Presidential Library site would be postponed from its original March date until after that election. Chicago’s mayoral runoff election is tomorrow, Tuesday, April 7th. The Obama Foundation announced in March that in order not to influence that election, the announcement of the final decision on the Presidential Library site would be postponed from its original March date until after that election. I expect the announcement within the next few weeks.
So here we are at the end of a struggle that began within days of Barack’s first inauguration. That struggle was to get a community to realize its significance and believe in itself again. The tools were already there. There were already many great people, doing great things in North Lawndale. But to believe in ourselves enough to dare reach for such a nationally coveted prize; to dare step into a national arena and compete with states and institutions holding great power; to present ourselves to the world, warts and all; that took a true leap of Faith.
The 10 North Lawndalians who made that leap will be in my heart for the remainder of my days. The task they faced deterred most that had even the slightest details of what was expected of bidders. That Faith carried us forward and that hard work carried North Lawndale into the Finals.
Regardless of what the decision is North Lawndale now has a new source of pride. With or without the Library that pride can help guide our community into a new age of growth.
And that’s why each of the 10 individual people who put their reputation on the line and their normal lives on hold to join in this endeavor deserves the gratitude of all of us.
As founder of The North Lawndale Presidential Library Committee, I give my personal declaration of thanks and gratitude to the members of that committee:

What is planned for the land beside the north end of interstate 55 and Damen exit?

I saw trucks leveling the land and now I see markers for construction. The land is actuall across from where Transformers was filmed.
