Bikes on Peterson sidewalk?

Hi, I moved here from someplace terrible a few months back, I love it. I'm near Rockwell in a nice condominium.
But: when I go to Target, people, especially young'ns, are riding all wobbly wibbly on the sidewalk.
I have a trick knee from a car crash and I'm always worried about getting knocked down, aren't there regulations about not riding bikes on the sidewalk?

Yeah, Up until the age of 12 you're not suppose to ride on the sidewalk. However, yesterday I was almost hit by 2 grown adults it look like a father & daughter duel on the sidewalk. What was funny about that was there was a cop in his squad car...

What was funny about that was there was a cop in his squad car who either didn't see or didn't care. This happened on the corner of north shore & clark in front of the corner store. The cop was a Sgt. I can tell by his uniform it took place around 5pm--(I mean they were Speeding!!)

The "Spiral of Silence"

The Pew Research Center reported an interesting study about social media, specifically, a the "tendency of people not to speak up" about public issues on social media sites if they think their opinions aren't shared by most of their network. Thoughts?

you're right about how we recognize and tune out these individuals, Vernetta, but I think you aren't acknowledging the "background" effect that they have on general readers. Even after we weed them out in our minds and ignore them, they still contribute to our general sense of "neighborhood orneryness" and of an "angry society" in general. They change our sense of the social landscape. In a way, nothing has changed; we've always had gadflies and malcontents among us (the guy who shouts at public meetings, the annoying neighbor, etc.). But until the era of the internet, and of social media specifically, these individuals didn't have a platform where they could direct their messages at everyone all the time and where their voices could have such a disproportionate effect on society. But it's just something we have to live with. And it's not even as bad in Rogers Park as it is in some places. I used to live in small city that voted 70-80 percent for the democratic party, but online discussions in newspaper forums, etc., gave the impression that half of the city was tea party.

  • Carl, I think your posts are very thoughtful and I agree with both. I think that the 1% often get us all off track, especially when comments turn personal and mean. I don't like bullying in any form. There's a difference between identifying problems or complaining about conditions with the aim of seeking input and solutions and just generating negativity.

This morning at 6:20 vans arrived at the Republic Bank parking lot and began banging together tents and a stage and setting up chairs for a day-long party celebrating Indian Independence Day. The event will include live entertainment and, of course, loudspeakers. The party will begin around 11 and is expected to last until at least 7 pm.The man in charge told me that the alderman had signed off on it and if I had any complaints I could take them up with her. When I told him that this is a residential area, he replied "So what?." This is absolutely the last straw for me. Neither the alderman nor the event's organizers had the courtesy to advise the neighbors in advance about this event, which belongs in the park, not in a residential area. Complaints about noisy events in the parking lot are met with indifference by the alderman and the bank. All anybody cares about is money. I think she forgets that commercial and political interests have to be balanced with quality-of-life issues for residents. I am tired of the high-handedness, of the lack of communication, of being expected to accept whatever she and powerful commercial interests decide to do. She was elected alderman, not queen. I think this is what you get when all the political power in the ward is in one family. I've been ambivalent about the alderman for a long time but this is the last straw. My home will be under siege all day. I want a new alderman. I've just learned that there is a credible potential candidate and am trying to meet with this person in the next few days. We need change in this ward. We replaced the alderman last time, but we didn't change the system. If the ward is going to work for everybody, the system has to change, too.

I believe the grid system is in order now.
I live in the 50th ward and signs were up last Tuesday and Wednesday.I watched as the street sweeper drove up the middle of Estes Ave.ignoring both the gutters and curbs.I saw the alderman at Devon Farmers market and told her about it and she said she will talk to the ward boss about it.The signs are still up a week later

  • JR West Ridge Neighbor Since 2003 Resident of West Ridge since 2003

On the rare occasion we see a street sweeper they do a pretty good job. I have met the driver and wave when I see him. As for the signs, I had to call the alderman's office and inform them that signs were posted days after the sweep. I drive east from Kedzie on Rosemont everyday and noticed the signs on several blocks. After I called, they removed them.

Reminder: Women's Baseball in Chicago during World War II

Here's another way in which women's roles expanded during WWII: The National Women's Baseball League (1944-54) included the Thillens Checashers a fast-pitch team that played at Thillens Stadium, Devon and Kedzie. Documentary filmmaker Adam Chu will trace the league's West Ridge connection in his talk at Northtown Library, 6435 N. California Ave., this Tuesday August 26 at 6:30 pm. The league was a rival to the All-American Women's Baseball League (1943-54) which was the subject of the film "A League of Their Own." His talk is co-sponsored by the Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society and the Northtown Library.

Deadly Mosquitoes Invade West Rogers Park

A woman in her 70s who lives in West Rogers Park was diagnosed with the city's first case of West Nile virus, officials said. Of the more than one hundred victims last year, around ten percent died. Technicians will be spraying Zenivex to poison the mosquitoes. You should stay indoors and close your windows while spraying is underway as an extra precaution, city officials said. Be careful because one bite can kill you. http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20140819/norwood-park/city-spray-far-northwest-side-for-mosquitoes-wednesday

  • Yeah, She Chemist. What's your deal? You're being such a downer, throwing in all these "statistics" and "big words."

Can't you just let me overreact to this whole thing, and let me stay anxious about dying from west nile virus?!?!?

Can't you just let me demand FACTS and INFORMATION ... Just without actually having the most accurate and complete ones?

...cuz I don't want to learn things that will make me less scared!

Seriously, though. What are you, some kind of elitist?

Where's the thread?

How and why does a thread get removed from everyblock? I was following one and POOF- it's not there anymore. Curious as to what happened.

  • If you remember the thread title, try searching for it in the search box in the upper/right corner of this page.

Threads will get removed if there are multiple personal attacks.

Hello everyone,
This is my first post and since starting to read everyblock in September - I feel that the people who participate really care about this community and eachother in it as a whole.
Indian Boundary Park is an amazing sanctuary in the city and i feel lucky to live close and be able to take my dogs for walks in the park several times a day (and always clean up afterwards).
Which brings me to this question:
What do you do about the people who dont leash their dogs (and there are plenty in the am)? My dogs are well trained but we do NOT let them off leash ever because of the great variables that can happen. However - other dog owners do not follow the same decorum.
We have called the police (who show up - but typically after they have time to leash up), we have asked (typically with a response of "find a different part of the park" or we just get ingnored or a snide comment.
So I ask all of you -- What would you do?
How would you handle this?
Is there anything more I can do? (and no - i wont try to find a different park)
Thank you for you replies and help!

Jim

I too walk my do at Indian Boundry Park and my dog is always on a leash and I always pick up after her. I see many people with dogs not on leashed and I along with my neighbors also have reported this to the police. I think all it would take if the police would catch and ticket just one person this might help. These people are think their dogs won't run off and possible hurt other people especially children. It is amazing to me that these type of people are selfish and think the part is for them and them alone

  • I still say lazy dog owners who won't take the time to socialize and "train" their dogs are the problem. You blame the owners who spend the time and money to that instead of yourselves. I don't go to IBP and I won't now that I know what kind of dog owners do there. LAZY ONES!!

Noted Police Presence Around Rogers Park and School

I have noticed an increased amount of police patrolling around the school/park. My daughter keeps different hours than I do and said the same thing. My husband was pulled over yesterday for failure to use a turn signal, rolling through a stop sign, and a cracked windshield. The officer was very pleasant and quick. He let him continue on without any tickets. My husband drives a large, white, work van so the officer may have wanted to check it out and definitely had probable cause to pull him over. My feeling is that they are looking for something bigger. I'm just not sure what it is. I have seen a lot of youngsters in packs on bikes riding around the park too. Does anybody know if something has happened? Also, make a full stop at the signs or you'll be pulled over.

  • Oh, okay! Your post seemed like there was some hidden reason for the increase in patrol.

This morning around 8:30 music began blasting into my home from the street. Thinking it was yet rude car parker, I waited a few minutes but the music continued. I took the dogs for their walk and found the music was blasting from a truck parked mid-way up the block about to begin work for the gas company. I asked the driver to turn the music down, and he responded with an angry "I'm working here, I have a right to play music. What's the matter, you got something against Hispanic people or Hispanic music?" I told him that his behavior was rude and he couldn't cover it by accusing me of racism (I am white). Later I spoke to a man who appeared to be a supervisor (after the music was turned off) about the incident. The driver got out of his truck and said I was making too much of it. I wonder if he'd feel the same if the situation were reversed and the racism came from me and not him. It seems to me that some people will never get past playing the race card to cover bad behavior. I'll be complaining to the gas co about this guy.

Loud music is loud music, whether it’s Latino. hip-hop. metal or the 1812 Overture. Noise is a form of pollution, and exposure to it can physically damage your hearing. You were well within your rights.

  • Is anybody surprised that it was People's Gas? They do whatever they want to do. This includes using my hose and tearing up my (and all of my neighbors) patios. Now they're gone and we have the mess and thousands of dollars worth of repairs. Who will file the 1st class action lawsuit?

Thanks much to Mary Arents for all her hard work organizing and managing this year's markets, and to the volunteers who've helped her. I've been extremely critical of last year's events so I'm really pleased to support this much-improved market. I hope we can all show our support for the remainder of this year by attending, and then help Mary put an even better market together for 2015.
