Warren Park iceskating rink question

Hi guys,
Before you tell me to make a call or contact the park which I did via email/phone/twitter with no response so I'm asking if anyone can recall something for me?

My parents/sisters are coming to visit us from ex-burbs and we'd like to go skating at the rink at the park and I was checking for their information for ice skate rentals... can anyone tell me if they rent out skates at the park... their information right now is outdated from last years information.

Beware of deranged man in WRP

I was walking home yesterday around 4 p.m. on Hoyne ave just past Fargo when somebody started following me. The middle aged black man made light conversation with me about how cold it was then he asked me where I lived he started touching me inappropriately through my ski jacket telling me I had a nice jacket. I immediately ran to the gate of my condo as he walked the opposite direction. I didn't get a good description on him so I did not call the police. I'm posting this to put other females on notice and want the community to keep and eye out and also to be really careful. Scary

Nonsense, you sound as though you have lots of experience with situations where women are accosted, assaulted or groped in your day-to-day rounds. More power to you and your observational skills! I guess.

Me? Not as experienced or capable. Like being able to read a map, maybe. Some people have the skills, some don't.

  • To "SpamAlert": You sound as though you have even more experience being clueless and sarcastic, not quite so much being analytical or relevant.

Tips to The Common Cup

Drink your cup of coffee or eat a breakfast danish from local community masters, The Common Cup at 150 W Morse??? Please tip large to support Indo-American Center, a refuge for many, many West Ridge residents needing English classes, support paying for heating/cooling bills, immigration assistance, seniors socialization, job training, and even computer literacy! The tips for ALL of November will benefit Indo-American Center's free services!!

Thank you!

  • Yes, Peter, it would be nice to have a true local coffeehouse with neighborhood regulars as opposed to a chain that sells lifestyle rather than community.

  • Jeff Teacher

Bina's Cafe (on Lunt just west of Western across from Red Door) might be worth a visit. I am not a coffee drinker, but I know they have an espresso machine.

  • Renuka Literacy Coordinator at the Indo-American Center

    Four to be exact!!!

  • Rebo Positive pet and service dog trainer

Try Freecycle.org. Choose "Chicago" and follow instructions.

You will be amazed at the generosity and goodness of people.

This is a good site for everyone. Got something nice that you don't use but it's too nice to throw out? Offer it on Freecycle. You will make another person's day, maybe week!

  • JCV My head hurts.

I work for an art supply retailer and would be happy to extend my employee discount if you're unable to find anything for free. We sell frames up to that size. Message me if other searches don't pan out! :-)

Classes for Carpentry / Masonary / General Home ownership maintainence

Hi, We've recently purchased a home in the Rogers Park / West Rogers Park neighborhood and I'm looking for classes around here that would teach basic home ownership maintainence DIY skills. (besides youtube, which has been a godsend) Like perhaps doing basic construction carpentry (like fixing a broken dry wall) or simple masonary that wouldn't require city permits. I know I wouldn't be able to do anything on a professional level but I would like to learn some basic skills....

I know I wouldn't be able to do anything on a professional level but I would like to learn some basic skills. Any recommendations would be grateful. Also, I'm willing to travel within reason to take classes. Unfortunately I work a typical 9-5 job mon-fri and would only be able to do nights and weekend. I know Home Depot sometimes have these 1 day bootcamps and seminars and it's great but I want something that goes more in depth.

Good bars in West Rogers Park?

Where are the best watering holes around the Lunt/Western intersection? Preferably where you can walk to in 10-15 min.

  • Mullen's is a good option. Their Southwest Buffalo Wings are fantastic.

The Candlelite on Western has a good selection of beers. Also excellent burgers.

Homeowner Zoned Parking

Instead of permit parking, we need homeowner zoned parking. Every single family residence homeowner or owner occupied multiple-unit building would be entitled to the exclusive right to two parking spaces adjacent to their property lines. These rights would be leased annually from the city for a small fee. Those not wanting to lease the right would continue to look for spaces on the street as they do now. Homes with fire hydrants would have first option to pick up any unleased space nearest their house.

  • SidSak ERP Kilmer, Sullivan alumnus.

It seems to me single family residence majority of the time have garages or space where a car port or garage could be.

  • Rus

I have another plan that makes as much sense.
We take all structures and raise them at least 8 feet, which would clear the way for an abundance of parking.
Everyone could have 7 cars, one for each day of the week.

Ald. Silverstein wants to put in Permit Parking on my street. This would not only cost me more money on a street I already pay taxes for but would not solve the problem. I also would need to buy guest passes for visitors. My family has live din the same place for 50 years and the population of the neighborhood keeps going up and will continue to do so, that means even if you pay for the permit you still wont be able to find a parking spot.

I have a 6 year old son with Autism, he is in therapy outside of school 5 days a week. Not only would I need guest passes 2 days a week for my babysitter but I would also need 2 passes 2 days a week for the therapists that come to my house from 5:30-7:30 pm (permit enforcement would start at 5pm) this is ludicrous and would cost me a lot of money, money that I use to provide my son with extra therapy. Has anyone else had a problem like this or tried this route in their neighborhood only to have them thinking "Uh Oh"? I would appreciate any feedback. I was sent a survey and when I tried to fax it in, the fax number provided was for a business called AON downtown, hmmm. Diversion tactic?

  • Well said, Dan. West Ridge is not now and never was a nightlife district.

  • Fuji, I read your proposals on your Web site. A few questions: Why should the neighborhood pick up parking costs for visitors? Who will pay for the free parking and the shuttle buses? Nothing is really "free," there are always costs associated with "benefits" and those costs need to be...

Fuji, I read your proposals on your Web site. A few questions: Why should the neighborhood pick up parking costs for visitors? Who will pay for the free parking and the shuttle buses? Nothing is really "free," there are always costs associated with "benefits" and those costs need to be paid; for example, who will pay to lease and fuel the shuttle buses?. Will they be using CTA stops? Is it really a good idea to add shuttle buses to the congestion on Devon? If the Warren Park lot is used exclusively or overwhelmingly by shoppers, where would those using the park's facilities park?

Semi Trucks Parking on Western Ave

Anyone else notice all the semi trucks that use the metered parking on Western Ave, mostly between Bryn Mawr and Pratt? They're too wide for the parking spots and take up about half of the right traffic lane. I have to navigate around them on my morning commute up to Evanston.

  • I have noticed them along Warren Park, ususally white with no/little markings on them. Find out anything?
