Leaving hi tax Illinois for low tax states

http://ilnews.org/2780/irs-dragging-feet-in-release-of-inter-state-migration-data/
SPRRINGFIELD — The Internal Revenue Service is dragging its feet releasing data on migration of people — and their income — between states.

In the past, it has taken one to two years for the IRS to prepare and release migration information but now it will take three years, said J. Scott Moody, who heads State Budget Solutions, a national group dedicated to promoting fiscal responsibility in the state governments.

“The data indicates that year after year, people are moving from high-tax ‘blue’ states like Illinois to low-tax ‘red’ states,” Moody, said.

  • Sarahdonis 20 year neighbor

I hope you find your bliss. Certainly, there are advantages and disadvantages wherever you will go. For me, I'll keep my high taxes, and my Lake Michigan, access to the most beautiful city in the world, every cultural event known, and even snow. I just don't think I could live in a Red state, scary. But I may feel different as these old bones and joints age more and more.

  • So Sarahdonis, living in a "red", low tax state is "scary." Narrow minded attitudes like that are scary but you're entitled to them.

Dog Leash Laws and the people who dont care

Hello everyone,
This is my first post and since starting to read everyblock in September - I feel that the people who participate really care about this community and eachother in it as a whole.

Hello everyone,
This is my first post and since starting to read everyblock in September - I feel that the people who participate really care about this community and eachother in it as a whole.
Indian Boundary Park is an amazing sanctuary in the city and i feel lucky to live close and be able to take my dogs for walks in the park several times a day (and always clean up afterwards).
Which brings me to this question:
What do you do about the people who dont leash their dogs (and there are plenty in the am)? My dogs are well trained but we do NOT let them off leash ever because of the great variables that can happen. However - other dog owners do not follow the same decorum.
We have called the police (who show up - but typically after they have time to leash up), we have asked (typically with a response of "find a different part of the park" or we just get ingnored or a snide comment.
So I ask all of you -- What would you do?
How would you handle this?
Is there anything more I can do? (and no - i wont try to find a different park)
Thank you for you replies and help!

Jim

  • So call the police then. I agree. As I said the police have better things to do, unfortunately. But I too, would rather they enforce other laws like battery, robbery, rape, murder and proliferation of guns. Having your dog off leash is not a felony just and ordinance and not what I would consider of top importance either.

  • I for one would feel stupid and immoral calling the police away from what could be a life or death situation to enforce an unleashed dog ordinance.

Shooting Near Howard and Western?

This is from a neighborhood message board:

"There were a series of gunshots in the alley in the 7400 block of Maplewood and then many police officers. . . shortly before 11."

I hope this was something domestic, and the gang war isn't moving west

Check out the EB posting "Joe Moore and Carl Good - this One's For You!" for some interesting questions being posed to Ad. Moore in the 49th Ward. We might make the same inquiries in the 50th. I think Suzanne Devane raises an important question about the use of the city Council's time approving awnings and signs in the public way; yes, maybe this could be better done by a bureaucrat rather than the full council. I think several of the issues raised in that thread could make for interesting discussions among our four announced candidates. Ald. Silverstein's council record can be reviewed here:

I loved that bird, and almost daily I was going over there just to pet him and spend some quality time with him, hoping that the owner might give in, and give me the parrot.
He was loved my many, because a lot of people were approaching him daily.
I don't think owner cared much about the bird, because most days he was outside, on top of his cage, and then locked in the restaurant at night with the loud music.
If you know anybody that acquired a medium size dark green bird week ago, please let me know..
Because I still care about this bird and I am willing to buy him off of u..
If you found him, stole him, whatever happened .. please send me a message, I am emotionally attached to this little guy.
They can get pretty loud.. so if u mind all that and you stole him not knowing how they can get.. please, please let me know.. I would be more than happy to take care of him

Bikes on Peterson sidewalk?

Hi, I moved here from someplace terrible a few months back, I love it. I'm near Rockwell in a nice condominium.
But: when I go to Target, people, especially young'ns, are riding all wobbly wibbly on the sidewalk.
I have a trick knee from a car crash and I'm always worried about getting knocked down, aren't there regulations about not riding bikes on the sidewalk?

  • If you're more than 12 years of age you can't ride your bike on the sidewalk. Joe Moore sends out frequent reports from the 24th District commander about quality of life arrests (driving while on cell phones, public drinking and/or urination, etc.) but I notice there's nothing about cyclists on the sidewalk. Ald. Silverstein added a link to the report on her last newsletter. The report does provide some insight into what activities the police focus on, and it may be that there just haven't been enough complaints about cyclists to warrant any attention. It can be dangerous for pedestrians, though, especially at night. I've yet to find a cyclist who calls out when he's trying to pass, but I have found quite a few who zoom down sidestreets at night because they aren't expecting to encounter dog walkers or those who enjoy a late-night stroll.

I am in front of that Target all of the time (I catch the bus there often). I use a walker for balance issues related to a neurological issue so I can not move that quickly even if I wanted to. I refuse to jump out of the way for people illegally riding their bikes on the sidewalk and so far nobody has hit me. They may yell and say to get out of the way but when I do not, they either stop, move to the street, or go around me. One guy swerved at the last second and fell. They seem to expect pedestrians to yield to them. :-/

Some people behave very differently in public than online. I know who a few of the Brash Big-Mouths in this EB forum are and who consistently talk tough, crude and rude to the point of bullying but at an actual public meeting they meekly remain quiet, often near the back of the room and never utter a single peep much less a solid opinion on anything. They crave attention online but fear attention or recognition in public. It is interesting to read their rants online and then see them later in the same day at a public meeting trying to melt into the background without being noticed.

This morning at 6:20 vans arrived at the Republic Bank parking lot and began banging together tents and a stage and setting up chairs for a day-long party celebrating Indian Independence Day. The event will include live entertainment and, of course, loudspeakers. The party will begin around 11 and is expected to last until at least 7 pm.The man in charge told me that the alderman had signed off on it and if I had any complaints I could take them up with her. When I told him that this is a residential area, he replied "So what?." This is absolutely the last straw for me. Neither the alderman nor the event's organizers had the courtesy to advise the neighbors in advance about this event, which belongs in the park, not in a residential area. Complaints about noisy events in the parking lot are met with indifference by the alderman and the bank. All anybody cares about is money. I think she forgets that commercial and political interests have to be balanced with quality-of-life issues for residents. I am tired of the high-handedness, of the lack of communication, of being expected to accept whatever she and powerful commercial interests decide to do. She was elected alderman, not queen. I think this is what you get when all the political power in the ward is in one family. I've been ambivalent about the alderman for a long time but this is the last straw. My home will be under siege all day. I want a new alderman. I've just learned that there is a credible potential candidate and am trying to meet with this person in the next few days. We need change in this ward. We replaced the alderman last time, but we didn't change the system. If the ward is going to work for everybody, the system has to change, too.

I believe the grid system is in order now.
I live in the 50th ward and signs were up last Tuesday and Wednesday.I watched as the street sweeper drove up the middle of Estes Ave.ignoring both the gutters and curbs.I saw the alderman at Devon Farmers market and told her about it and she said she will talk to the ward boss about it.The signs are still up a week later

On the rare occasion we see a street sweeper they do a pretty good job. I have met the driver and wave when I see him. As for the signs, I had to call the alderman's office and inform them that signs were posted days after the sweep. I drive east from Kedzie on Rosemont everyday and noticed the signs on several blocks. After I called, they removed them.

Reminder: Women's Baseball in Chicago during World War II

Here's another way in which women's roles expanded during WWII: The National Women's Baseball League (1944-54) included the Thillens Checashers a fast-pitch team that played at Thillens Stadium, Devon and Kedzie. Documentary filmmaker Adam Chu will trace the league's West Ridge connection in his talk at Northtown Library, 6435 N. California Ave., this Tuesday August 26 at 6:30 pm. The league was a rival to the All-American Women's Baseball League (1943-54) which was the subject of the film "A League of Their Own." His talk is co-sponsored by the Rogers Park/West Ridge Historical Society and the Northtown Library.

Deadly Mosquitoes Invade West Rogers Park

A woman in her 70s who lives in West Rogers Park was diagnosed with the city's first case of West Nile virus, officials said. Of the more than one hundred victims last year, around ten percent died. Technicians will be spraying Zenivex to poison the mosquitoes. You should stay indoors and close your windows while spraying is underway as an extra precaution, city officials said. Be careful because one bite can kill you. http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20140819/norwood-park/city-spray-far-northwest-side-for-mosquitoes-wednesday

He let him continue on without any tickets. My husband drives a large, white, work van so the officer may have wanted to check it out and definitely had probable cause to pull him over. My feeling is that they are looking for something bigger. I'm just not sure what it is. I have seen a lot of youngsters in packs on bikes riding around the park too. Does anybody know if something has happened? Also, make a full stop at the signs or you'll be pulled over.

I took the dogs for their walk and found the music was blasting from a truck parked mid-way up the block about to begin work for the gas company. I asked the driver to turn the music down, and he responded with an angry "I'm working here, I have a right to play music. What's the matter, you got something against Hispanic people or Hispanic music?" I told him that his behavior was rude and he couldn't cover it by accusing me of racism (I am white). Later I spoke to a man who appeared to be a supervisor (after the music was turned off) about the incident. The driver got out of his truck and said I was making too much of it. I wonder if he'd feel the same if the situation were reversed and the racism came from me and not him. It seems to me that some people will never get past playing the race card to cover bad behavior. I'll be complaining to the gas co about this guy.
