All Night Fireworks

It sounds like a war zone over here at Western and Devon, 4th of July was three weeks ago WTF is with all the explosions and fireworks?

  • It did sound like dynamite!

Not sure what a cherry bomb is but a student in grade school blew his hand off with one. You couldn't get me near any of those explosive devises with a ten foot pole. A war zone describes the sounds about right. Oh yes, I did think it might be very loud thunder but the sound wasn't quite right for that.

New Devon Restaurant Proposed

The July 23-29 issue of the News-Star (sorry, story wasn't available online) carried a front-page story about a new restaurant proposed for 1248-60 West Devon. Described as "upscale," the restaurant would have 124 seats plus a 26-seat bar and would rely on street parking. The owner has two other restaurants and bought the 14-unit building. His lawyer, Dean Margos, says the restaurant, to be called Lakewood bistro, would be "...an engine for Devon Ave. revitalization that would bring 'million dollar condos' to the area." According to the News-Star, the attorney also said that the restaurant's "prices would dissuade less than wealthy people" [from eating there]. The owner is also seeking an incidental liquor license because the precinct is currently dry. Although this area is part of the 49th ward, I've learned to be leery of talk about "revitalization" and "upscale" whatever. I've seen it in other neighborhoods where I've lived and it always displaces longtime residents who can no longer afford to live in the area. Million dollar condos and destination restaurants where locals can't afford to eat can kill a community. We need to focus on balanced development, ie, the kind that's good for a neighborhood, profitable for a business, and doesn't harm or displace decent people who lack six-figure incomes. The paper also notes that contributions from Joe Moore have been made to Citizens for Dean Margos. I don't know what office he's seeking or sought.

  • Willy, I think I'm entitled to say that I find another post hostile. It's too bad you didn't like my original post, but telling me to "man up" is juvenile. And hostile. And that's my last word on this subject.

Update to "Reserved Parking Misuse?" Posted June 17

Quick recap: My neighbor has reserved (handicapped) parking but parks his vehicle all over the block in order to save parking spaces for other members of his household. Quick recap: My neighbor has reserved (handicapped) parking but parks his vehicle all over the block in order to save parking spaces for other members of his household. I wondered if this is legal (it's certainly not right). I e-mailed photos to the alderman's office and spoke with Marlene, who advised that it is not illegal for those with reserved parking to park elsewhere on the block because the streets are open to the public. It seems to me that this is a loophole that needs to be closed. If the City takes a public parking space and gives it to a resident for his/her exclusive use, then that reserved space should be the only place on that street that this person should park. Other members of his/her household should get the same luck of the draw as everybody else. I'd like to ask the alderman to sponsor an amendment to that ordinance. Opinions, please.

(I won't say that they didn't appear disabled, because I know better than that)-- I felt then that there is an abuse of this system going on, and I still believe it. I honestly don't see as many of these spots in other neighborhoods, so I have to wonder if the abuse is more prevalent in ours.

IRS Scam

There are people calling and posing as IRS agents, threatening lawsuit or arrest if immediate payment isn't made. Seems obvious after the fact, but they are very good at making you feel very afraid. Please don't judge us; I simply want to raise awareness so others don't fall prey. The IRS will never call you about tax disputes. If someone does call posing as IRS and threaten you, it is a scam.

Z Frank

I was unable to attend the community meeting this evening regarding the sale and potential redevelopment of the old Z Frank space at Western and Peterson. Was anyone there and have any information? Overall feel for how this will pan out?

  • I wonder if the residents most affected could band together and use the rezoning as leverage to get the buildings modified. If it's already a done deal it's hopeless...you would think that residents would have a say in this, though.

  • Z Frank Chevrolet was in that location since 1936, until it was sold to Mike Anderson Chevrolet in 2008, and subsequently moved to Irving Park, near Six Corners. There was also a Pontiac dealership where the Walgreens is now located. This area has been commercial (and a car dealership) for...

Z Frank Chevrolet was in that location since 1936, until it was sold to Mike Anderson Chevrolet in 2008, and subsequently moved to Irving Park, near Six Corners. There was also a Pontiac dealership where the Walgreens is now located. This area has been commercial (and a car dealership) for longer than most of us have been alive, it's just been vacant for the last several years. To me, complaining about a new car dealership coming in is on a par with complaining about airport noise after you buy a house in Des Plaines -was the airport there when you bought the place? Yes? Then you knew about the "nuisance" and that should have been part of your decision making process. Same with Z Frank. I, for one, welcome the new enterprise.

Garbage Dumper on 6400 Block of Fairfield

He had parked overnight out front and when he retrieved his car he apparently decided that the parkway in front of my home was the right place for a McDonald's bag and a black plastic bag, both full of garbage, and several receipts. I yelled at him to stop and picked up the garbage, tossing it back inside the car through the open passenger window just as he was about to toss out a water bottle. He was surprised and then furious, tossing the same garbage plus the water bottle onto the street as he drove away. I got his license number. How do I get the police to issue a dumping ticket? Actually, he should get two tickets, one for the parkway and one for the street. I'll go to court if he contests the tickets. Even if this becomes he-said she-said, he'll miss at least a morning's work and it may make him think twice before he dumps garbage again. What really makes me mad is that I had just cleaned the parkway when I walked the dogs, and had picked up other garbage on our street. Be on the lookout for an older model dark green 4-door car, partial license plate R96---8 (I won't post the whole thing but I have it), driven by a young Hispanic with a close buzz cut. I think he lives on Washtenaw. He's the garbage dumper. He's parked out front before and I've found garbage but this is the first time I've actually caught him.

Way to go Paco! I have done the same thing, yelled at people, called the alderman, but always received the same response, "no picture, nothing they can do". Maybe if more people stand up, loudly voicing their opposition, the less people will do it? One could hope but I won't hold my breath! Either way, love what you did!

  • Carrie, he hasn't been back so maybe it worked! Thanks.

This morning, we had three cars parked on my side, including one next to my home. As of Noon the street sweeper hadn't appeared, and neither had the police to issue tickets. I really think that we need to increase fines for people who park on a street they know is schedule for cleaning (in each case the vehicles were parked in front of or just behind the orange street cleaning signs). Sixty dollars isn't enough. This is the second time in a row that the street in front of me won't be cleaned because of some lout who doesn't care about street cleaning and probably doesn't live on my block anyway. I'll have to go out and sweep it myself. I say we start with a $100 ticket, and increase it $50 for every subsequent violation. If you want to thumb your nose at other people and the law, you should pay for it.

  • $100 - my last ticket for failing to move my car for street sweeping several years ago - in West Ridge. No zone, no other additive penalties.

  • That's odd - why isn't there one fee citywide?

I've been both the victim of violent crime and a witness. The feeling going into court was the same for both. I was nervous, scared, and at the same time knew I was doing the right thing. It is commendable to overcome the fears that cause blind eyes. Our alderman is not perfect. Not one of us are. Some comments made on that thread I believe lost sight of what was originally intended.

When I first reported getting mugged at the end of my alley I was terrified for weeks. My yard is easily identifiable with it having enough toys for six kids in it. They had my phone with pics of kids in yard. I didnt want to leave the house and send my boys to school. I got over it. We play in the backyard and the kids were fine going to school. Guess we got lucky. I just couldnt see letting them hang at the end of our alley after they literally punched me right out of my shoes, broke my big toe, and a few small bones in my hand.. I can definitely understand the fear of retaliation.

  • Sarah, I can understand how truly frightening the whole experience was. You did the right thing, and I thank you. Do you think that reporting what happened scared them off?

Planting on the parkway

Does anyone know the Municipal Code, or rule for planting plants, NOT TREES, on the parkway in front of your residence? I have a neighbor that has planted indigenous plants on their parkway that attract bees and butterflies. The plants are not only beautiful but smell wonderful, however some are quite high. There is one person on the block that feels it is a safety issue when she walks by, and wants to call the Alderman's office on them. I can't seem to find anything online about the rules of plants, just trees. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Do we want to set a precedent of giving into a paranoia, however unreasonable?
I would start a counter-petition. I have asked alderman for an enforcement campaign for laws that are already on the books (right of way of pedestrians @ crosswalks) w-out much success, it would be an affront to common sense for her to get behind this scared woman w-out history of such hiding in the bushes crimes in our district.

  • Jess M Parent and teacher

Sure didn't mean to start a controversy. I'm generally in favor of parkway planting. I love the amazing stuff on Campbell and Albion, for instance. But sometimes it can make it difficult for pedestrians and drivers to be careful of one another. As a pedestrian with 2 small kids, a stop sign there would make me feel like everyone knows what the expectations are. Alternatively, trimming the hedge would also help. Just my two cents.

We went to the Devon Market yesterday and had a really nice time looking at the different merchants and products they were selling. Lots of Bakery vendors :), a really nice company selling capons that we decided we will by one next week if they come back. There were a couple of veggie/fruit vendors and we bought some lettuce and fresh sweet Black Cherries that are really good. I thought the prices were very competitive and hope that more vegetable vendors come as the season gets more productive for the farmers. Enjoyed looking at the table set up by Rogers Park Historical Society. Thanks for the free canvas bag to help me bring home my purchases. Will return again. We can tell someone worked very hard to make this a successful initial market. Congratulations.

  • I walked to the market and enjoyed capon sausage and hibiscus tea infused with strawberries for dinner, plus took home fresh bread, cherries, and raspberries for later. I had a nice experience and will come again next week. My only criticism is there was no place to sit and eat. I was there shortly after 4. Some tables were being set up as I left. Maybe that's what they were for. Definitely DO support this market.
