City Inspectors again - 3rd Call- No Building Permit- Workers still working 7827 S Ridgeland

This is the 3rd call put into 311 and the building permit department of workers unlicensed and no working permit at 7827 S. Ridgeland. They also are breaking up a concrete steps and porch without a dumpster whereas concrete dust is flying all over the place in my yard and in my neighbors yard, on the sidewalk. In the black neighborhood anyone can just come in and do whatever they want to do without license or permits. I have asked the media to come out on this issue and they have, thank you media. This is evidence for us to file a civil lawsuit on the owners. The pictures are attached.

Normjohn the crew is not licensed because after getting their information, they are not registered and found out through the better business bureau that the courts canceled their contract from prior courts precedings. I also know about the permit by checking with the City of Chicago Building permit department whereas a uniform personnel, I have access to that kind of information.. Please understand, this is protection of my property not vengeance on the workers. These workers that the owner have brought have been stealing electricity by running a false line from either me and my neighbor and Commonwealth disconnected the line and issues a citation all because the owner hasnt paid the $5,000 electric bill on the building and prior workers in february was stealing gas by using their own pole to turn the gas on and was using a blowtorch trying to take the cap off the gas port on the parkway - I had fellow officers come out and they were arrested. The other crew unlicensed was doing some welding on the back of the building around the electric meter and started a fire in the back of building which contacted onto my deck, I did file insurance claim on them and won. So now you see my point. Its sad because these new ownership are coming into the neighbor and these new owners lives in Schaumburg and buying up renting not living in the neighborhood their tenants in which a majority not working, when you come home from work, they are up all night partying and keeping noise and sitting on the front smoking their marijuana, we are trying to have a safe, comfortable clean block and we must fight together or we lose it. These new owner is refusing to purchase permits, they have been shut down twice for not having them plus the fire they caused, just all sort of various mess.

  • In life sometimes one wonders why some people who aren't so deserving sort of breeze through life on ez street. And others who try very hard to do the right things in life are bopped upside the head for no reason. And for this I apologize for not really understanding. You have been "bopped" undervantly.

This is a hazard due to some kids in the neighborhood has been getting in the gate which is not locked and as soon as a child climb up on these pieces of concrete, the whole pile is going to come tumbling down and some kid will get crushed to death. There should have been a dumpster available to put this in and the unlicensed workers just broke it up and left it there in the open. See attached picture. This has been going on since April, 2014 and no citation has been issued yet to the new owner nor the workers, no permit posted yet.

City of Chicago Building Inspector Doesnt Do Their Jobs

I reported over a month ago a two-building whereas mexicans had been rehabbing this two -flat with a building permit and without a dumpster. I reported over a month ago a two-building whereas mexicans had been rehabbing this two -flat with a building permit and without a dumpster. They were throwing the drywall, the old electric box and ports and old plumming into the back yard and the debris was flying all over the block into mine and other resident yards. In put this into the 311 system as an emergency and spoke on the telephone with an Inspector within the department, to the current date July 15, 2014 no inspector, no violation given for rehabbing w/o permit. The new owner of this building obvious has ties with the building inspector because I even report this to Alderman Michelle Harris but of course we dont expect any results from her office, which is a joke to the south side 8 ward. This is why a neighborhood and block go down in property value. She and the city allows these people to come in and work without permits and they destroy these homes from they are not licensed contracted to work under and make a mess of the valued properties in the black neighborhood. This whole City of Chicago Building department should be shut down. This is why those firefighters were killed in 2010 because the building should have been torn down and the inspectors of course took money under the table and/or didnt do their jobs in inspecting these buildings, now lives have been destroyed because of their neligence.

If renovations are being done in a building, a building permit is required. The building permit must be posted in public view. The building permit will included the general contractor's name and address. The individuals you see working at the building are more likely than not the labor crew of the contractor or sub contractor and have no monetary investment in the property. It is just their employment. The individual you need to pursue is the building owner and the contractor. If there is damage to your property and/or issues of health endangerment you need to seek the advice of an attorney while the work is being done so evidence can be compiled and documented and your rights are protected. To research the building owner you will need to visit the Cook County Assessor office, this information is in the public domain. I am sorry to hear of the difficulties you are experiencing, but a visit to the City of Chicago's Building department with photographs and engaging in a conversation with a supervisor there. While you are at city hall a visit to the mayor's office couldn't hurt. Good luck

Hairston Gives Mariano’s CEO Tour Of Possible Store Sites In South Shore

Some have complained about Hairston's response to South Shore's Dominick's closing & the lack of interest received from grocers to move into the space.

Getting the CEO here to tour South Shore and 7 potential sites (he doesn't like the old Dominick's location) is remarkable. I do hope something comes of it.

Seven Grocers Turn Down Former Dominick's in South Shore, Alderman Says

In case you haven't seen this article, 7 grocers have decided against moving into the now closed Dominick's location at 71st & Jeffrey. I think it's a real shame that no one is willing to move here, but I'm sure that the unchecked rise in crime in South Shore over the past several years is the primary reason. Until we (residents, police, government) clean up the problem areas, no major business will open in the neighborhood.

Here's a link to the article:

The landlords are a whole other issue and good point to bring up. There should be an enforced do not allow landlord and property list that identifies the staff to ok the contract, as part of the random home visits the apt maintenance of the landlord needs to be monitored, landlords should be fined and publicly listed for improper maintenance and unsafe conditions, and cultivating buildings of terror. Ppl respond to hits in the pocket book and bad publicity. Part of the budget should include adds listings slum lords and failed units/buildings like the city does with failed health inspections.

For many reasons (inclusive of the more common ones of this forum), Alderwoman Leslie Hairston should be replaced by a more equitable and "hands on" alderperson. Her tenure has been one that has shown, clear, favoritism to some parts of the ward and has been overtly negligent to most others.

While it is not her fault that displaced tenants have moved into South Shore, it is a slap in the face that requests for assistance (in the absence of assistance from the CPD from reports of crime and others pressing concerns). For instance, the alderwoman has been consistently notified of drug activity, illegal auto repairs, abandoned properties, and even alerted to the increase of male congregation and loitering activity in the 7000 block of East End, the 6600 block behind Chase Bank, the 6900 block of Cregier, the open air drug activity in the currency exchange lot at 67th & Stony Island....and more. Now weknow that one of the accused murderers of recent crimes resided in the 7000 block of East End. There seems to be a network of males from the aforementioned areas...yet the alderwoman did nothing. The CPD did nothing (and the department on Cottage Grove needs a complete overhaul).

    I yield.
