Encouraging news from Mariano's about South Shore.

This sounds promising, although, I'm dumbfounded by the negative comment about the commuter train. One would think locating a grocer on a commuter rail stop would be a good thing, making the store much more accessible to residents nearby.

Another store closing

Well they closed another store. I guess it was because someone got shot at the 81st and exchange store. It wasn't the store's fault someone got shot. Now the same people that were shooting at each other have only 2 stores they can go to close by. Hmmm, I wonder if this will lead to them shooting at the next store.

But that's the police's job not the business. The thing all these places have in common, is that money is being spent. That's what attracts those the people standing outside. They are trying to make a living. Whether it is legal or not I don't see any businesses up and down 79th street that are hiring. Or 87th or 67th so let's not assume that the people outside the store are losers. And then again there are different types of people, but not all are trouble makers. Let's not look down on those less fortunate than ourselves. Irregardless I need to have a store open that I can get food and drink from.

Perhaps I did not make myself clear...I am not speaking on those less fortunate Jay.Ii am speaking on those who have a gun and plan on using it to harm those who will stop them from selling their drugs...and not the drugs that are being sold INSIDE a store...and since my truck was hit by stray bullet from those making a living in front of a corner store, I feel that I can use the word looser, since I am not able to use the word I would like. As for who job it is ....it is ALL of our job to create a better environment for our neighborhoods...but hey...you can't fault people for being scared of being killed when standing up for a cause can we...including myself... we are human so we are going to pick and choose our battles....this one however is a challenge that even the police are scared to tackle. As for your store issues...unless you were directly impacted by the closing of Dominick's in your neighborhood...sadly, your area just returned back to which it was prior to that store opening...another grocery dessert in another black community in dire need of a grocery store..

Parties on 8006 east 80th at oglesby

It is so sad how neighbors take it upon themselves to throw parties in this area as though they are in a banquet hall
You wonder why the city is so messed up just lost my husband and now have to listen to ths coming throug my house

  • carmalitta curious carma

That is terrible. That is just plain down right ghetto. Id you all that go to a club

  • Even though your neighbors know has consideration be taken that no one wants it but feel they have no choice. It should not be where you can here it a block away coming through bedroom windows.

Concerns on the south side of Chicago

I am looking on other conversations on this website and there are people talking about new grocery stores, eateries and so. The 7, 8, 9 and 34 wards on the south east and I am sure Englewood, we do not have a thing to look forward too. We need a grocery store, our people are over here killing eachother because of no resources. How do we put a stop to this?

  • Happy making better choices

Get involved with organizations already trying to get things done. When we stop trying to approach these issues as individuals but instead join as one voice, things will get done much faster bc we will not be seen as divisive and unorganized. Also, bring other ppl even if not in the neighborhood to the fold.

  • Dr. Magic Stuck Here In South Shore Since 2011

Mr. Mitchell, you sound like a good guy and i respect you. however i disagree with the reasons for the killings in the so-called "black community". i blame a lack of respect for human life, not because we're lacking grocery stores.

Happy, as usual you're on target. :-)

I'm lucky to live near Save-a-Lot on 83rd. I think there are other Save-a-Lot's on Stony Is. It doesn't have everything but it has the basics at a good price. Plus the people running the store are friendly and helpful. I just heard Mariano's is opening a store on 87th & S.Shore in 2016. Until then I'll be traveling several miles to get the organic, trendy stuff when I can.
