Seven Grocers Turn Down Former Dominick's in South Shore, Alderman Says

In case you haven't seen this article, 7 grocers have decided against moving into the now closed Dominick's location at 71st & Jeffrey. I think it's a real shame that no one is willing to move here, but I'm sure that the unchecked rise in crime in South Shore over the past several years is the primary reason. Until we (residents, police, government) clean up the problem areas, no major business will open in the neighborhood.

Here's a link to the article:

How many of us checked with or sought the permission of the Alderman before moving to South Shore (or any other neighborhood for that matter)?

Crime in South Shore is a problem, and there are too many CHA recipients here. The reasons are because there is an abundance of apartments, and the property owners are largely absentee. They seek out voucher recipients because they know that they will be paid consistently. Since the owners don't live here, they don't care about the quality of the tenant. All that matters is the voucher!

I agree with the sentiment that's being expressed here, but I don't see the point of directing the critiques at the wrong person. Problem property owners should be targeted, one by one. We should use the alderman to help in the fight! Replacing the alderman won't change anything. The property owners will continue to rent to CHA voucher recipients.

The landlords are a whole other issue and good point to bring up. There should be an enforced do not allow landlord and property list that identifies the staff to ok the contract, as part of the random home visits the apt maintenance of the landlord needs to be monitored, landlords should be fined and publicly listed for improper maintenance and unsafe conditions, and cultivating buildings of terror. Ppl respond to hits in the pocket book and bad publicity. Part of the budget should include adds listings slum lords and failed units/buildings like the city does with failed health inspections.

Over the past month I've read about all the crime that has been happening in South Shore. Let's spend sometime posting the good in our community. Play Streets had kids outdoors playing every week for the past 5 weeks, Small Business Seminar took place on July 19th it had a huge turnout, jobs for Safe Passage, FREE Health Fair at South Shore Chamber 8/15...these are just a few things that should be flooding this site.

Mr. Willard Davis, Jr and his Asst. Tim Carr are two of worst black men better known as uncle tom. Mr. Davis has not responded to date and people gas sends out this butt kicking Tim Carr to do their dirty work. This is why the black community is going down the drain because of black butt kissers like these two who let their company come into our community and destroy and damage that which we have worked hard to upkeep. I am taking this issue to the state senate representative with an attorney who is representing me.

Another store closing

Well they closed another store. I guess it was because someone got shot at the 81st and exchange store. It wasn't the store's fault someone got shot. Now the same people that were shooting at each other have only 2 stores they can go to close by. Hmmm, I wonder if this will lead to them shooting at the next store.

But that's the police's job not the business. The thing all these places have in common, is that money is being spent. That's what attracts those the people standing outside. They are trying to make a living. Whether it is legal or not I don't see any businesses up and down 79th street that are hiring. Or 87th or 67th so let's not assume that the people outside the store are losers. And then again there are different types of people, but not all are trouble makers. Let's not look down on those less fortunate than ourselves. Irregardless I need to have a store open that I can get food and drink from.

Perhaps I did not make myself clear...I am not speaking on those less fortunate Jay.Ii am speaking on those who have a gun and plan on using it to harm those who will stop them from selling their drugs...and not the drugs that are being sold INSIDE a store...and since my truck was hit by stray bullet from those making a living in front of a corner store, I feel that I can use the word looser, since I am not able to use the word I would like. As for who job it is ....it is ALL of our job to create a better environment for our neighborhoods...but hey...you can't fault people for being scared of being killed when standing up for a cause can we...including myself... we are human so we are going to pick and choose our battles....this one however is a challenge that even the police are scared to tackle. As for your store issues...unless you were directly impacted by the closing of Dominick's in your neighborhood...sadly, your area just returned back to which it was prior to that store opening...another grocery dessert in another black community in dire need of a grocery store..
