Looking for volunteer opportunities in West Town

Hello - I'm new to the neighborhood (West Town - East Ukrainian Village), and I'm looking to volunteer in the neighborhood. I've found some postings about volunteer opportunities, but they are in the middle of the day, and it conflicts with my work schedule (9-5pm).
Not sure if anyone has any suggestions. Thanks!

Just a reminder about our community forum on USPS mail delivery problems and solutions this Monday night March 31st at 7pm, located at A.N.Pritzger School (2009 W Schiller St, Chicago, IL.)

This forum will be focused *solely* on the United States Postal Service and will feature speakers and employees from various departments of the USPS.

We've confirmed our speakers from the USPS will be:
Karen Schenck, District Manager, Chicago
Anthony Vaughan, Postmaster of Chicago
Paula McHenry, Customer Services Operations Manager
Bill Hedrick, U.S. Postal Inspection Service
Andre Martin, Office of the Inspector General
Mark Reynolds, Customer Services Operations
(The Station manager for Wicker Park and other postal representatives will also be in attendance)

This purpose of this forum is to help get context on what the USPS has to go through in order to get us the mail. We plan on leaving with a firm plan on how we can help them solve delivery problems from a community point of view.

Topics: Lost mail, stolen mail, package theft, new and easy ways of reporting, delivery issues, communicating with the local office, knowing your carrier, falsely marked delivered and best types of mailboxes.

Hope you can make it. For more info please click here: https://www.facebook.com/events/723187241036294

In 2007 Danny Davis held congressional meetings on the problems with Chicago mail service that was designated THE WORST IN THE COUNTRY. Here we are 7 years later and things are getting worse than in 2007!

Working with the same people who made the problem sometimes doesn't work. Why? Their judgement calls are what cause the problems. Making excuses, blaming the victims...those are all signals of NOT taking responsibility for the problems internally. Sending patrons back to the same phone numbers and software that don't work is also a sign management is on the wrong path.

What Postal management should be doing is working with steller individuals to provide reliable feedback; then going to the personnel file to figure out who was "on duty" at that time...and implementing protocols to get rid of workers who are doing a bad job.

The CRM software can be misleading as data can be manipulated through threads or algorithms. Unless they CATCH the culprets...things NEVER change. Sabotage does go on and is a tactic used to cause problems.

    t things done.

All of the internal fighting between management and unions at the expense of postal patrons is the reason why there may be no hope for this institution in Chicago. We have the same problem in other City worker unions too. In the end, taxpayers have to realize we pay for the service. If we don't get it, there is no reason to pay for a lifetime of work and then pensions until workers die.

That puts patrons on a continual downslide of worse and worse service. Drive around the neighborhoods that are 60-70% empty...realize that almost 1/3 of the Chicgo residents left in the past 35 years. With 1.2million gone...there will be cutbacks. But that is ok because Illinois is #1 in government hires. We hire more government workers than any other state. ERGO...less population, more hires....means financial ruin.

Again...Congressional hearings is the FASTEST way to ge

I wanted to alert those in or around the Wicker Park neighborhood, particularly dog owners, that there is a potentially dangerous guy who walks 2 medium sized dogs around the Division Street area.

I have had 2 run-ins with this person already and both have erupted into heated physical altercations, during the first of which he pulled a knife and attempted to stab me and a friend of mine for breaking up an altercation he was involved in with another dog owner.

Keep our neighborhood safe and please keep a look out for this guy.

Seamstress

Hi All!
I am in my friends wedding and I had to order a dress off of a certain Etsy site ( We all did!) Needless to say it did not come in as planned.

Anybody know of a good seamstress that could help resurrect my dress?? ( without breaking the bank!)

Let me know!

Nanny Share

Is anyone interested in a nanny share starting in October? Or are there any recommendations of where best to find a nanny share? Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you

  • A good way to find a nanny share is to join npnparents.org and look in their childcare forum. Good luck!

  • EJ, currently looking at child care options so may be interested

Where to throw away/recycle old electronics?

Does anyone know the best place to throw away/recycle old electronics in Chicago? Somewhere relatively cheap or free? I've got old broken stereo components, desktop computer components, a monitor and a CRT TV that I've been holding onto, but really want them out of the house now. Anyone have any ideas?

  • S. T. West sider via south via north

The city recycling center at 1150 N. Branch Street will take old TVs. Make sure you go when they're open and accepting the items. Hours and stuff they take is listed here:
    http://www.cityofchicago.org/city/en/depts/cdph/supp_info/hccrf/household_chemicalscomputerrecyclingfacilityoverview.html

Please DON'T leave a TV in your alley - people will smash the TV up, take the metals out and leave a mess of glass. People can also be seriously hurt by the high-voltage electricity stored in the TV's capacitors. Unless the coils are discharged, they can store electricity for a very long time.

  • Best Buy will take old electronics from you to recycle, they might even give a $10 gift card in return.
