Brewery tops 2014 East Village stories

Two longtime development issues were also in the top 10: apartment plans for the onetime AAA Distributing warehouse at 1850 W. Chicago, and a bid to lure a Trader Joe's grocery to the former Miller Lumber site at 1815 W. Division St.

Curious readers came to the East Village Association website for months preceding a May community vote to allow a tavern license and commercial rezoning at 1746 W. Chicago Ave. Half the 10 most-viewed pages on the site were devoted to the issue.

Don't be afraid to call 911

So many posts lately about seeing suspicious activity. Please call 911 if you see something. The police department WANTS you to call them if you see suspicious activity because we can be the collective eyes on the street. You should also post on this site but the police told us at a CAPS meeting that they don't have the time to track this site. Don't be afraid to call 911. You may prevent more crimes in our neighborhood.

  • Thanks for the reminder. I've noticed 911 works a bit differently in Chicago than other areas. 911 is really the police phone number if you need a car out for any reason.

Thanks for the reminder. I've noticed 911 works a bit differently in Chicago than other areas. 911 is really the police phone number if you need a car out for any reason.

A good excuse to have couple officers walk your street is if there are a lot of illegally parked cars. Call on it (prepared with zone number or what's illegal and then meet the officers out there). Everytime i have done this it's because there are >6 vehicles parked illegally within 100 ft of my property. I'm happy to point out when someone is 2' from the curb, license plates expired, no zone permit, missing front license plate. (Yes I've received a ton of my own tickets in the past.)

The officers always seem friendly when I've done this in the past.

Also, if you ever see someone checking door handles, call immediately!!!

Calling also allocates additional resources (more police) that are based on the number of calls received. Crime reported help police see patterns and help in stopping future crimes.

  • Jay

why call when they don't do anything? besides they are tied up with REAL crime they don't have the man power to check under your bed at night when you hear a scary noise!

Tree care on sidewalk cafe menu

City foresters and the local service district both plan to replace dead trees. Commissioner David Ginople, who owns Store B at 1472 N. Milwaukee, says 16 or 18 trees are dead.

"We want to restore the fencing – Red Square – that the taxpayers paid for," he said, calling out the spa at 1914 W. Division St. that paved and bricked over a tree pit last summer.

It was unclear how the city would proceed in other cases, such as the bricked-over sidewalk at 1846 W. Division St. Kirchner said he was involved in litigation at the address and would not comment, without saying who's suing whom.

Fix the Trees in Your Sidewalk Cafe or No Permit This Year, Alderman Says

"We want to restore the fencing — Red Square — that the taxpayers paid for," Moreno added, referring to Red Square, a spa at 1914 W. Division St. that removed fences installed by the city and "bricked in" soil around trees to make more space for a sidewalk patio over the summer.

Michael Taus, owner of Taus Authentic, which plans to open in mid-February at 1846 W. Division St., said he decided to rent the former Prasino storefront because of its large existing patio.

"The proper thing is, if you have your dirt [over a tree] covered, remove it. If fencing around the tree was removed, put it back in," Ald. Joe Moreno (1st) said to about 24 business owners at a Monday morning meeting at The Bedford, 1612 W. Division St.

Ald Moreno Claiming Endorsements He Does Not Have

Anyone else notice that Ald Moreno is claiming endorsements on his website that he does not actually have (see: http://aldermanmoreno.com/endorsements/)?

HE DOES NOT HAVE THESE ENDORSEMENTS:
Chicago Federation of Labor
IVI-IPO
Chicago Police Sergeants

THIS ORGANIZATION IS NOT ENDORSING DURING THIS ELECTION:
Sierra Club

THESE ORGANIZATIONS HAVE NOT YET MADE AN ENDORSEMENT DECISION:
Sun Times
Tribune
Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce

  • Bger East Village neighbor

It is possible that he received the endorsements during the last election. But leaving them on the website without spelling that out is misleading.
