Update: Jackson Park Dog Park

Added to the agility training course:
construction horse
suspended tire
cones

Many thanks to the anonymous benefactor of the bucket of fetching balls. I moved it all to the car, as balls go missing, i'll distribute them among the three Wooflawn dog parks. https://www.facebook.com/wooflawn Speaking of which, if anyone has any old toys your pup has lost interest in, please consider donating them to the dog park to give them a second life.

Driving Directions: LSD to Science Drive, go south on Columbia Drive beyond MSI's southern parking lot where you'll find the bridge to the tennis courts. Parking by the courts is free. The 'dog park' is located in the NE court enclosure. See bird's eye view => http://chicago.everyblock.com/pets/apr17-jackson-park-dog-park-6094931/photos/

    update 3:

Finally got around to clearing the drains.
No wonder we had so much standing water long after a rain.

note: Don't throw those used grocery bags away. Bagless doggie-parents could put them to good use at the park; just stuff them in the bag dispenser. btw container of cardboard scraps (aka Superduper Pooper Scoopers) above the bag dispenser are for cleaning up soft stools.

FYI: There is an on going outdoor social/party all summer long... saturday and sunday late-evenings/night all parking is jam packed, people everywhere. I found this out the hard way this past sunday; on my way in i was struggling to find a place to park and on my way out it was bumper to bumper. No one was partying near or in the courts when i was there but i've seen evidence of such after weekends past.

I think Brian might be right, your twisted attempt to hurt their business has most likely backfired. If i wasn't familiar with Robust until reading your pathetic whiny long-winded review, i'd likely read a few more yelp reviews while i was there (which btw are mostly glowing) and pay them a visit. If i had a positive experience and yelp account i'd feel propelled to write a five-star review to offset yours. Matter of fact, i'll add this to my to-do list. Thanks for the inspiration.

Moving here

Interested in renting an apartment here? Any suggestions which areas of hyde park are more desirable than others?

  • 50th and Woodlawn is in the Kenwwod neighborhood and has the benefits of a park and minimal car traffic to the east and to the west of there. Hyde Park is just to the south and wil be adding more eateries and a Whole Foods. Here is the link to the Chamber of Commerce events as well as there are plent of family things to do at Nichols Park and various other parks throughout the area. http://www.hydeparkchamberchicago.org/news-events

  • We live near 50th and Woodlawn...family friendly area, access to buses on 51st, well utilized play area for small children in the park, lots of organized sports activities

Fire Response @ 54th & Drexel

Four fire trucks just responded to what appears to be a fire in the basement apartment in the greystone a few buildings down from the corner of 54th and Drexel. Perhaps coincidentally, this is also in or near the same building where -- to the untrained eye -- there are a lot of comings, goings, and general loitering that seem vaguely suspicious. I asked the firemen standing around what was going on, and they first ignored me, and told me it's "absolutely not [their] job" to communicate with neighbors about the nature of fires on their street. So, any neighbors out there who can shed some light on what's going on -- either this time in particular, or in general?

Thinking about moving to Hyde Park. Good or bad?

I'll be working in the Loop (I'm a programmer), and Hyde Park seems like a good place to live, based on rents. Is there a crime problem? Any good dive bars or hole-in-the-wall restaurants? Parks? Thanks!

    Couple of as-yet unmentioned points...

    1) HP is home to one of the Chicago Park Districts outdoor ice rinks. I raised 2 boys in this neighborhood, and basically for us the Midway Ice Rink is the winter equivalent of The Point. My kids and I always run into our friends there, and meet new ones as well. Sadly, starting this past winter it is no longer free to skate, but it's still only a couple of bucks (plus rentals if you don't own). If you don't know how to skate, this is the perfect place to learn because it's close to home, cheap, and very friendly to inexperienced skaters. Most importantly, its a really easy and enjoyable way to avoid going into complete hibernation in the dead of winter.

    2) Your original question about dive bars was not really answered with any specifics. My answer is The Cove. Looks a little sketchy from the outside, but pretty friendly inside, good bartenders, and a mix of local residents and student clientele. Unlike Jimmy's (which a lot of people might consider #1 because it's more or less the "U of C bar"), they actually have a some good of craft beers (3 Floyds, Lagunitas, Revolution) and a bunch of decent TVs.

Also, the U of C operates "The Pub" in the basement of Ida Noyes, which is mostly students but has a good atmosphere. It also has the best beer selection in the neighborhood, perhaps not counting the relatively new Porkchop - but Porkchop is a restaurant with a small bar area, not a bar.

Best cocktails in the hood by far are at A10, but that is most definitely not a dive.

In my opinion, avoid The Falcon Inn. It's just not fun there.

Really?

I have to question the validity of the claim, "This is what Hyde Park has been waiting for."

  • Michael Deuser: What's wrong with Dunkin Donuts? They just moved across the street -- in the little corner next to Fifth Third bank. My coffee-loving friends say theirs is the best.
As for what I've been wishing for -- I miss Pier 1 and I would love to have a store like Cost Plus World Market in Hyde Park -- someplace for inexpensive but tasteful housewares.

  • I want the Freehling Pot and Pan Company to expand and move into the new building that will be anchored by Whole Foods. This store is an excellent example of a successful local business (as is Wesley's Shoe Corral http://wesleyshoes.com/).
