How can Cochran say that he's SURPRISED by the Runoff in the 20th Ward?

Cochran says that he's SURPRISED by the Runoff in the 20th Ward. Not sure why since he was FORCED into a Runoff in the LAST 20th Ward Aldermanic Election by Che Rhymefest Smith. He assuredly really is NOT ready for this Runoff!

Willie Cochran Surprised by Runoff in 20th Ward, but He Says He's Ready

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and 20th Ward Ald. Willie Cochran are both headed for a runoff election on April. 7.

Willie Cochran has also publicly endorsed Mayor Rahm Emanuel for re-election.

  • We certainly hope so. Cochran was in a Runoff in the LAST 20th Ward Aldermanic Election with 20th Ward Aldermanic Candidate, Che Rhymefest Smith. We certainly hope so. Cochran was in a Runoff in the LAST 20th Ward Aldermanic Election with 20th Ward Aldermanic Candidate, Che Rhymefest Smith. Voter turnout for that election was EXTREMELY low, about 25%. Voters defeated the purpose of forcing the Alderman into a runoff by not coming out to vote to finish what they started and that was to get Cochran out-of-office. We're hoping to get voters to come out in record numbers on April 7, 2015.

South Side Ald. Willie Cochran claimed victory tonight over challenger Che "Rhymefest" Smith in their 20th Ward contest.

With 84 percent of precincts in, Cochran had 54.6 percent to 45.4 percent for Smith, a Grammy-winning rap artist.

Recently, I noticed last Thursday that she was no longer in the area, and in fact her sleeping bag was left empty. I checked with the gas station she goes for snacks at times and they had not seen her. By Sunday, the area was swept clean of all her belongings. Does anyone know if her family members took her in, if she was taken to the hospital or a shelter, or otherwise? I pass by her often and have often chatted with her since I live nearby. Would love to know if anyone has news.

Todd Agosto, as tax paying, voting Bronzeville resident stakeholders, we have never asked politicians for permission to create or implement visions and plans for the future development of Bronzeville, as an emerging African American heritage tourism destination!

That is why we have been relatively successful and effective in our sustainable (20) twenty year protracted struggle, to develop Bronzeville/Black Metropolis as a premier African American oriented heritage tourism destination.

The question today is, which of the two candidates campaiging for Mayer of Chicago, will present the best platform that serves the economic, business and civic engagement and empowerment issues effecting African American communities in Chicago?

20th Ward Aldermanic RUN OFF ELECTION

To my neighbors in the 20th Ward, may I remind you of Carol Mosley-Braun's infamous statement she made about the "crack lady" when she was running for Mayor and how that was the catalyst that possibly lost her the election. Well, our current Alderman went there with one of the candidates running against him during a debate when he stated to him (not verbatim) "you talking about helping the children, but you are behind in your child support payments." Really, Willie? (You can watch it on You-tube if you weren't in the audience. All the debates for all the wards as well as the debate between the Mayoral Candidates is on you-tube as well.) Did Willie think telling the audience that his opponent was behind in child support was going to garner him more votes. I think not, what it did was allow us to see the current alderman in his true form. MY OPINION: It is not by coincidence that you see all these changes happening in Woodlawn and the surrounding areas going on now. It is to fool you into thinking that Willie (AND THE MAYOR) is doing something for the community. Where has (T)he(Y) been in the past four years? Why did it take an election year for all this work to begin? As voters we need to demand more from our elected officials....not just during an election year, but all year-round. We shouldn't just see the police in our neighborhoods as representatives of the government, we need more visuals of the Alderman, Congressman, Senators, Mayor, etc. I've gotten more material in the mail in a week about what Willie (MAYOR) has done in the 20th Ward (CITY) than I have in four years since I've been living in the ward (CITY). I employ you to seek change and ask that you take it to the polls and vote for it! Show these elected officials that to get our support, they need to actively participate on our behalf. I am not being paid to endorse anyone, but I will vote my candidate of choice. BAILEY for Alderman of the 20th Ward and the other guy for Mayor......IJS

Commentary from this EveryBlock Chicago account holder.

My name is Michele Evans-Brock.

This account was initially created IN SUPPORT OF 20th Ward Aldermanic Candidate Kevin Bailey.

I later started supporting Mayoral Candidate Willie Wilson. Now, during the RUNOFFS, I am supporting Mayoral Candidate "Chuy" Garcia.

This is NOT the account of ANY of the above mentioned candidates and they therefore are not able to respond to candidate related questions of voters.

***GENERAL STATEMENT***

I personally do NOT and will NOT engage in discussions, especially to NEGATIVE responses of which the responders have long sense been MUTED or will be MUTED. To do so is unproductive use of valuable and productive time and pulls unnecessary focus from what I, as a supporter of these candidates, am working to accomplish.

Those who do not like me or MY CHOICE of candidates, I'm unsure how many times they feel that they need to express their NEGATIVE views, perceptions, and assessments, but, they can feel free to continue doing so WITHOUT my participation.

These posts are meant to reach the UNDECIDED and to provide enough information for the UNDECIDED to maybe make a decision for my candidates and also to keep current supporters updated on current events with the candidates campaigns. They can also read the negative responses and make whichever decision that they feel in their hearts that they need to make.

THANK YOU and GOD BLESS!

Sincerely,

Michele Evans-Brock

The Cook County Clerk Office is still discriminating against the GLBT Community.
On February 15th after being together for 12 years my partner Patrick and I were married surrounded by friends and family. What an exciting time filled with so much love and joy.

On February 19th we went to the office of the Cook County Clerk to turn in our marriage license and apply for copies of our marriage certificate. What an absolute horrible experience. Not only was the person behind the counter indifferent, she was difficult. Then to make the whole thing worse, on the receipt for our marriage certificate they used the language of bride and groom! My partner Patrick and I were standing right in front of this person, she had our marriage license with both our names on it and the words, "spouse and spouse". She did not even spell my name correct on the receipt. She spelled Shane with a "G" at the end. This was supposed to be a special day but all I felt was anger and embarrassment as I was forced to explain why this was wrong and why they needed to fix it, while I was being stared at by everyone in the room.

After all the work and sacrifice our community has made and we still have to deal with this stupid and obvious discrimination.

  • I pity the woman responsible for your unfortunate experience. Clearly shes unhappy; don't let her ignorance cloud your great day.

  • Emily M Pastor, Designer, Hyde Parker (since 2005).

I'm so sorry to hear that this was your experience. It just serves as a reminder that the work for full inclusion continues. You can't legislate hearts and minds, but laws are a huge step forward. Joy to you and your partner as you begin a new chapter of life together!

  • I was very happy to get this very kind response from David Orr the Cook county Clerk regarding my recent complaint about our marriage certificate:

I was very happy to get this very kind response from David Orr the Cook county Clerk regarding my recent complaint about our marriage certificate:

    Dear Mr. Desautels,

I am writing in response to your February 24th email in which you described your unpleasant experience on Feb. 19 while purchasing a marriage certificate at our downtown Bureau of Vital Records. Customer satisfaction is something we take very seriously, and I’m sincerely sorry we failed you and your partner.

While I understand your frustration and disappointment, the problems you experienced were not a result of discrimination. My staff and I pride ourselves on treating every customer with the respect they deserve, and we have enthusiastically welcomed more than 6,500 same-sex couples to our office in the first year of marriage equality.

Rather, this incident was due to an employee who failed to meet the high standards expected of my employees. The bride-groom error on your receipt was also due to the clerk’s poor performance. All of the official marriage documents – the application, license and certificate – automatically display the titles designated by the couple. Our cashiering receipts, however, must be edited by the clerk. The clerk skipped this last step. We have spoken with and disciplined the employee, and she will be re-trained on how to issue a marriage license.

I sincerely regret that we did not serve you better. Please accept a refund for the $34 you paid on Feb. 15. We would also like to send you a complimentary commemorative certificate. You can contact Director of Vital Records Brenski Coleman at 312-603-6703 or brenski.coleman@cookcountyil.gov to work out the details.

Finally, congratulations on your recent marriage. I wish you and Patrick a lifetime of love, joy and laughter.

    Kind regards,
    David Orr
    Cook County Clerk

After Bailey spoke with police, Radcliffe, the current Morgan Park baseball coach, and Bailey both agreed they should leave the area.

"I went up to him, shook his hand and told him and his mother to be careful. We said it wasn't a good time for us to continue this," Radcliffe said.

Radcliffe, posted on his campaign Facebook page that he and his campaign members were "in great danger" Saturday.

"Ernest was out campaigning ... with his campaign crew when a shooting broke out," the post said.

Like Bailey, Radcliffe said the incident was an example of why they were seeking to become alderman.

"This is the reason our community needs to elect a new alderman because of the danger our community is in," Radcliffe wrote. "Ernest will not be scared off by no one. Ernest will stand his ground and continue to fight for his community while others are sitting by doing absolutely nothing."

It's time for some major improvements.
Walgreens should not continue to sell alcohol. Tomorrow is the last day for early voting, please come out and vote neighborhood! CHICAGO, IL - On February 21, 2015 at approximately 4:40 pm, Kevin Bailey, candidate for Alderman of the 20th Ward, was at the 20th Ward's Early Voting location greeting voters. Suddenly, without notice or warning, a group of young men raised a gun in the direction of Bailey, and without saying a word, fired the hand gun in Bailey's direction.

Kevin Bailey was not injured in this incident and is filing a police report.

During the course of the campaign, Kevin Bailey and his campaign team have received numerous threats and attempts at intimidation. “I will not be intimidated, I will not be afraid," Bailey said. "These are the issues of our community, and I refuse to hide or let up on the fight to establish a better and safer community and continue to challenge the status quo. "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." Seriously, I don't believe in god, but I do think the quote is relevant. I tried to get on the ballot for the aldermanic election, but one of the incumbent's operatives challenged my signatures and the residents of the ward were not able to evaluate my ideas and opinions in terms of the best interest of the city and the ward. People in power should not have to take to the low road to stay in power; they should have a track record that speaks for itself and legions of loyal supporters. I met Norman Bolden while I was gathering signatures. For a time, we worked the same area. He accepted the validity of my pursuit, as I did his. I was pleasantly surprised by his sense of decency. I also read his responses to the Tribune candidate questionnaire. Again I was impressed. I met two people petitioning for Burns and they each stated they had no allegiance to the candidate, but they needed the $125 per day they were being paid. For those who would follow links to gain further knowledge, I urge you to visit my site, The 4th Ward link in the "Archive" tab has the record of my ballot attempt. The "Social Science" tab has some interesting videos. We don't need Ward Bosses, we need public servants.

Until a few days ago, waging a write-in campaign for 20th Ward alderman was not on my ‘to-do’ list. I hadn’t deemed a write-in campaign viable because of the massive apathy throughout the ward. Obviously, I’m thinking differently now. Two reasons: the library and Rahm. Overflow crowds at all the public forums where the Obama Library is concerned indicates there is, at the very least, a lot of people paying attention to that one issue. And chances are, they’ll vote. As for the (anti) Rahm group, I’m not so sure. While there is palpable, shall we say, dislike for the incumbent mayor prevalent in the 20th Ward, it’s hard to predict if that means people will come out and vote against him. Some studies indicate people tend to not vote at all when feeling negatively about a candidate or an election. In other words, it’s hard to know if the same people who say, “I hate Rahm ‘cause he closed the schools”, will vote. I certainly hope they do (vote) and I hope they realize that the ultimate form of protest at the polls is the write-in vote. It will tell the entrenched politicians (Republican, Democrat, whoever), in a language they can understand, that you can never be taken for granted again. When a write-in ballot is cast the political ‘tremors’ will not only be felt in the 20th Ward, they’ll feel it at City Hall, in Springfield and in Washington, D.C.. (Oh yeah, he’ll be paying attention.) We should give the entire Machine establishment somethin’ they ain’t never had. Let us reject not only City Hall’s chosen candidate, let us reject and repudiate the entire system that creates him (the incumbent) and others who want to be him (challengers that engage in ‘dirty tricks’). We have to not only break the Machine, we must demonstrate, in the strongest way possible, our total disdain for what it hath wrought. WRITE-IN: JEROME A. DAVIS, 20TH WARD ALDERMAN. . . .and here's what some voters are saying/thinking:

Yesterday afternoon I found two fliers, folded together and inserted in the fence above my mailbox. One was a copy of the flier that began this thread (a photo of that flier is linked above by Todd A) and a second was a Kevin Bailey campaign flier. Both were on exactly the same paper stock/size: 8.5" x 11" glossy magazine style paper. This does not conclusively prove that the Bailey campaign is responsible for distributing the lie-based hit piece on Cochran represented by the first flier, but it is consistent with that theory and also consistent with a pattern of "press releases" from apparent Bailey campaign operatives that make sensational claims against other 20th Ward aldermanic candidates, or scaremongering inferences, without weak or zero supporting evidence (e.g. see “Press Release - Attempted Shooting involving 20th Ward aldermanic Candidate, Kevin Bailey.” Or The ILLEGAL PRACTICES of 20th Ward aldermanic Candidate, Andre Smith). It is notable to me that the Bailey campaign has so far taken no steps on this thread to clarify the issues raised or distance themselves from the deeply unethical and outrageous claims contained in the anti-Cochran flier. Because of this pattern of activity, I am not confident that Mr. Bailey’s actual identity is even remotely related to the identity he is seeking to promote vis-à-vis his official campaign fliers. Far too much of Mr. Bailey’s campaign material seems to focus on unsupported innuendo and either passively accepted or actively promoted slander. I hope the gentleman is not as deeply flawed as the materials that seem to be promoted by his campaign, but so far, the evidence is not encouraging.

All the more reason(s) to bypass the balloted candidates. Separate yourself. WRITE-IN: JEROME A. DAVIS, 20TH WARD, ALDERMAN.

The Chicago Reader has an online "Who's Who" in the Burge case and Cochran is not mentioned (http://www.chicagoreader.com/chicago/the-police-torture-scandal-a-whos-who/Content?oid=1921098). I FOUND NO EVIDENCE TO SUGGEST THAT THE FLIER'S CLAIMS ARE TRUE AND THE LACK OF ATTRIBUTIONS ON THE FLIER SUGGEST IT IS A POLITICAL HIT-PIECE BUILT ON COMPLETELY FABRICATED LIES. There seems to be some real money coming into the 20th Ward race. Does anybody know who it's coming from? I'm not a big fan of Cochran but I appreciate factually based political argumentation and this flier is an ugly piece of character assassination.

Jolyon, you must be a skilled carpenter, as you've hit numerous 'nails' squarely on the head. All the more reason(s) to bypass the balloted candidates (or at the very least, the incumbent and Mr. Bailey) and WRITE IN: JEROME A. DAVIS, ALDERMAN, 20TH WARD.

Pattern of outrageous and unsupported claims in pro-Bailey literature and posts.

South side dog park

Does anyone else question why the majority of dog parks are on the north side? I live in North Kenwood and it seems to me that Hyde Park, Kenwood, North Kenwood and Bronzeville have tons of dog owners and dog park closer to us would be most appreciated!!!

Further proof i'm low on sleep or caffeine, typos galore plus i forgot to mention/offer; if any of these spaces or similar will work, let me know and coming spring, i'll install a bag dispenser, toy/leash basket/rack and water station.

  • Tracy in Hyde Park Lives in East Hyde Park

The little park by Lake Shore Drive, between 51st and 53rd, is named after the former mayor. The big park west of Cottage Grove is named after the former general and first president. The naming of the big park came first, before the mayor with the same last name was a mayor, so it's just "Washington Park." If you mean the other, then both first and last name must be given. Maybe one day the big park will be renamed, "George Washington Park," to avoid confusion.
