Moving here

Interested in renting an apartment here? Any suggestions which areas of hyde park are more desirable than others?

  • I'm actually looking at Regents Park myself right now. I'm at East Part Tower at the moment. Depends on needs and price range - but Hyde Park Tower is pretty nice, Shoreland is a great building with crazy good views, but pricey.

  • I actually was going to post a similar question... I am considering a move to 50th and Woodlawn. I have visited the neighborhood, but admittedly I was more of a tourist when I did. Since I have a family and this would be a big move, I'm concerned about schools and social activities that are family friendly. I'm pretty game for trying something new but, based on this and other posts, it seems like one runs the risk of picking the wrong block pretty easily.

Update: Jackson Park Dog Park

Added to the agility training course:
construction horse
suspended tire
cones

Many thanks to the anonymous benefactor of the bucket of fetching balls. I moved it all to the car, as balls go missing, i'll distribute them among the three Wooflawn dog parks. https://www.facebook.com/wooflawn Speaking of which, if anyone has any old toys your pup has lost interest in, please consider donating them to the dog park to give them a second life.

Driving Directions: LSD to Science Drive, go south on Columbia Drive beyond MSI's southern parking lot where you'll find the bridge to the tennis courts. Parking by the courts is free. The 'dog park' is located in the NE court enclosure. See bird's eye view => http://chicago.everyblock.com/pets/apr17-jackson-park-dog-park-6094931/photos/

West Loop is one of our favs too but this year we've rarely had the chance to visit. Now that Charlie can be trusted off leash in open spaces, there are many more options. Each day we try to go somewhere different nearby.

    update to the update:

Tire hoop was collecting rain water so i drilled a row of drainage holes at the bottom.
Added adjustable supports so the hoop's high and location can be changed at will.

  • Is less more or is more better?

What if the children were younger, about 5 and 6, should the policy still stand? What if slhicks was alone carring her favorite coffee purchased from another establisment would she be allowed in to buy food? Sounds like Robust policy could use some tweaking.

  • Oh look, your review has been added to the "other reviews that are not currently recommended." How nice of you to advertise for Robust - they seem to get great reviews, I'll be sure to stop in next time I'm in the area.

Fire Response @ 54th & Drexel

Four fire trucks just responded to what appears to be a fire in the basement apartment in the greystone a few buildings down from the corner of 54th and Drexel. Perhaps coincidentally, this is also in or near the same building where -- to the untrained eye -- there are a lot of comings, goings, and general loitering that seem vaguely suspicious. I asked the firemen standing around what was going on, and they first ignored me, and told me it's "absolutely not [their] job" to communicate with neighbors about the nature of fires on their street. So, any neighbors out there who can shed some light on what's going on -- either this time in particular, or in general?

Thinking about moving to Hyde Park. Good or bad?

I'll be working in the Loop (I'm a programmer), and Hyde Park seems like a good place to live, based on rents. Is there a crime problem? Any good dive bars or hole-in-the-wall restaurants? Parks? Thanks!

    Couple of as-yet unmentioned points...

    1) HP is home to one of the Chicago Park Districts outdoor ice rinks. I raised 2 boys in this neighborhood, and basically for us the Midway Ice Rink is the winter equivalent of The Point. My kids and I always run into our friends there, and meet new ones as well. Sadly, starting this past winter it is no longer free to skate, but it's still only a couple of bucks (plus rentals if you don't own). If you don't know how to skate, this is the perfect place to learn because it's close to home, cheap, and very friendly to inexperienced skaters. Most importantly, its a really easy and enjoyable way to avoid going into complete hibernation in the dead of winter.

    2) Your original question about dive bars was not really answered with any specifics. My answer is The Cove. Looks a little sketchy from the outside, but pretty friendly inside, good bartenders, and a mix of local residents and student clientele. Unlike Jimmy's (which a lot of people might consider #1 because it's more or less the "U of C bar"), they actually have a some good of craft beers (3 Floyds, Lagunitas, Revolution) and a bunch of decent TVs.

Also, the U of C operates "The Pub" in the basement of Ida Noyes, which is mostly students but has a good atmosphere. It also has the best beer selection in the neighborhood, perhaps not counting the relatively new Porkchop - but Porkchop is a restaurant with a small bar area, not a bar.

Best cocktails in the hood by far are at A10, but that is most definitely not a dive.

In my opinion, avoid The Falcon Inn. It's just not fun there.

Really?

I have to question the validity of the claim, "This is what Hyde Park has been waiting for."

  • Michael Deuser: What's wrong with Dunkin Donuts? They just moved across the street -- in the little corner next to Fifth Third bank. My coffee-loving friends say theirs is the best.
As for what I've been wishing for -- I miss Pier 1 and I would love to have a store like Cost Plus World Market in Hyde Park -- someplace for inexpensive but tasteful housewares.

  • I want the Freehling Pot and Pan Company to expand and move into the new building that will be anchored by Whole Foods. This store is an excellent example of a successful local business (as is Wesley's Shoe Corral http://wesleyshoes.com/).

Appliance Repair

I have a refrigerator that does not cool anymore. Need to find an appliance repair person as soon as possible. Any suggestions?

  • CeCe Edwards Grand Crossing Park Advisory Council

if it is a brand name contacted
In my case it was the timer. had the mfg.cert.tech come out. it was worth the money.
Diamond Factory in Bartlett they don't discriminate against the south side or west side and will come out as an authorized service tech.

if you don't want to pay the service charge and want to try a local there is a MrFixIt in hyde park. good luck

  • Thanks so much CeCe!
