Neighbors

A question a friend recently posted on her facebook page received a lot of interesting replies. Thought i'd post it here and see if it would have the same effect:

"Do you have a close relationship with your neighbors? Hate your neighbors? Or never look their way & ignore them ( keep to yourself & avoid all contact ) ?"

  • Good morning Todd, I can see you that have your dealt with your fair share of absentee landlords and their tenants. Is there anything that one can do to get these absentee landlords to be responsibe for their properties?

Photograph every building/street/sanitation issue, video violations of noise ordinance, loitering, littering etc and send off the evidence to all interested parties (ie gov dept(s), management company, landlord) with notations of date(s), time(s) of day and if known, the name(s) of the individual(s) who are trashing the block/property(s).

Our local homeless peoples

Well, today I saw how we (they?) handle the (mentally ill, homeless, lost souls) in Hyde Park. A "cleanup" crew consisting of a garbage truck and a supervisor in a Streets and Sanitation pickup took most of the (anyone know his name?) stuff (personal belongings?) from the man under the 55th Street viaduct and removed it.

Notice the lack of specific information in that paragraph. Who is this man? Is he a benign being or a ticking time bomb? Who sent the trucks? Why wasn't there a person there to offer him help? Now what happens? We bring him more blankets to write on because it will be freezing tonight and the cycle starts all over again.

I admit, the pile of leftover food he made in the middle of the street this weekend was a digusting mess and the pigeons were loving it. Was this a message about Thanksgiving? Was it his way of showing us we have more than enough to eat, more than he can eat, more than the fowl can consume?

I don't know. But one thing about Hyde Park, it is a safe place for people like this to inhabit. That's not a bad thing. I just wish we would talk about it more. There's a lady in a chair on 51st. A man writing (is it jibberish, or a message?) on 55th. There's Pierre on 53rd and Blackstone (if you don't buy, sell, or trade with him, you should) and several more that we rarely see.

They are the invisible people. But only to those of us who don't want to see them.

Discuss.

Mentally I'll people need more than a "home".

It's PC propaganda that the problem is because mean rich people have denied these people homes and that they are just like the rest of us, only they don't have a home.

Crazy people can and do destructive things like that crazy Islamic extremist who just killed hostages in Australia after living a hateful crazy, extremist life for many years.

  • I could care less about the politics involved, it could be Bush's library for all I care. I support it only because of the economic benefit it will have on he surronding communities. Economic development doesnt just happen the library will be the spark to jump start it. At the very least those long vacant lots will finally be developed.

  • Todd Agosto Analyst/Investigator at Veritatem Cognoscere

I'm not a psychic but i think UofC will pick UofC. As for a prime location that would have the most positive economic impact and be the most readily accessible via CTA/Metra-train, car, bike and foot for UofC students as well as the rest of Chicagoland, Midway and Ohare... i think it's a toss up between Kenwood, Washington Park and Woodlawn. The later, of course being the most preferable... again for obvious reasons, but i'm just a bit bias. ;D

Apartment cleaning services

Hello. I'm looking for someone to clean my apartment on a monthly basis. Does anyone know of someone in the Hyde Park area they can recommend?

  • Try Sweeping Dimensions. The owner is Lari Diaz. You can google them for their number. We have been using them off and on for years and they do an excellent job. They bring their own equipment including a great vacuum cleaner.

Dear Hyde Parkers,

See the attached pic, it's your neighborhood in BLUE. You may have noticed, that there have been numerous attempts made on EB, over the past year, to enlist your support in making your blue fade. Your 'blue' being, your safety. Don't take my word for it, see for yourself, the bigger picture.
http://www.neighborhoodscout.com/il/chicago/crime/

Then bring into consideration, CPD's "good works" in Chatham, Woodlawn (my neighborhood) and the west side. Clearly none of their strategies, good or bad, have worked.

So in short, support your UCPD.

  • While there are certainly factors in the crime rate other than the quality of the police forces, I would agree that the UCPD does appear to keep Hyde Park/Kenwood safe. I can say at least that as someone who grew up in HP, I always felt safe with UCPD around....

I witnessed a mugging a few years ago (I was about a block away) and ran to a UC emergency phone. I'd say an unmarked UCPD car came within 1-2 minutes, and after about five minutes, at least three UCPD cars had stopped. One was taking statements and at least one cruised the area looking for the perpetrators. A CPD car came around this time as well, but clearly UCPD were on the scene in amazing time. And this was for a very low-level crime, an un-armed robbery.

Live-In Nanny Needed

Hello - we are seeking a live-in nanny for our 2yo & 5yo. We live in Roscoe Village on the North Side. The ideal candidate will have a friendly and positive attitude; be willing to help with all aspects of household management; and have flexibility re. work times and hours. Primary assistance is needed Mon-Fri., so it's okay if the nanny has somewhere else to live/stay on the weekends. MUST have a driver's license and excellent references. Spanish-speaking okay.

  • Now

Jannie what does being an attorney have to do with it? No need to answer. I know you're weary of this conversation. But being an attorney implies not necessarily a knowledgeable person but more of a predatory character. I'm basing this on cultural perception and not on who you may be. May you take to heart what Ginni and I are saying to you. Thanks!

  • @Now - against my better judgment I am going to answer and leave it at this: I'm sorry for the misery that's clearly in your life and the negativity that's caused you to post as you have. And I would like to apologize to all the attorneys and other intelligent people who you've insulted through your thread. We have found a nanny and I will be deleting this post and no longer following it. I wish you the best.
