Mariano's Plan Commercializes the Boulevard

Mariano's could find many other locations in Bronzeville to provide all the benefits: convenience, jobs, tax base and rejuvenation. Speak up and write letters. Protect the value of your home.

  • I agree with chanel latrice. Build a museum on a piece of the land to preserve the history of Bronzeville. State Street near the Robert Taylor site might be good.

For those condemning Marianos, please remind me how long has that lot been vacant? Why have you waited until someone saw the value in that space that others have overlooked or ignored for years to make it now an issue. No one is buying homes in this area on that level to build another development except for mixed income housing that the community has stated they did not want more of.

We as a people love to complain when someone sees the value in what we have, when we have ignored it for years. If you cared so much about the boulevard staying residential, you have had several years of that lot being vacant where you could have formed a group to purchase the land or petition and helped form some sort of co-op property. You had years to come up with options & funding for those options. Did you take advantage of that time to properly organize to attempt to bring the change you want to see?

Munchies site at 35th & King Drive

This highly visible storefront has been vacant since the unfortunate passing of the owner Rick and apparently the family does not want to continue the operation, also unfortunate. What would you like to see in its place?

  • Reggios,Beggars pizza or home run inn,connies

  • A nice sit-down restaurant other than soul food. African, Mexican, Japanese or some cafe style place. Great space for that.

Jimmy's on 35th & Prairie

I just noticed that it's closed with locks. Does anyone know why?

  • Chacho Chi guy in ChiTown

    Hope its stays closed...

  • Me too! Because I am so tired of cleaning up after the disrespectful teenagers that litter after shopping for their hot chips and red pop. Jimmy's Fresh Food Deli is a joke! More likeJunky's

  • What I did notice was how quiet and less riff raff loitering on 35th street appeared today. Amen.

Alderman Burns I saw on Friday work was being done on curbs at the corner of 39th & Cottage Grove. I'm wondering when the curbs are going to be completed after sewer work was done at 39th & Ellis? The crosswalks are unfinished and a hazard to cars and pedestrians. The problems starts at the park entrance, the median and the east corner of Ellis Street. How and why it would be left in this condition for so long is of great concern to me. I've reorted it to your office and on the city's website. It's hard to turn the corner without avoiding damaging your tires. The curb is uneven at all locations and is the only entrance to the park. Many people park on Ellis to cross over to the park and take advantage of the track. Please look into this. Thanks so much.

We've told the property manager they said call the police. Well we did, 2 weekends in a row. They came and went. We heard them after the police left cursing about us, the whole 9. Under normal circumstances I would approach them and speak with them but the concern is safety. We don't know who really lives there plus we don't want to run the risk of someone vandalizing our property. Another neighbor said when she walks in the building and she's struck in the face with the strong smell on weed. She doesn't want to say anything because she lives alone and shares some of our same concerns. What if anything short of moving can we do?

We had a similar situation just two weeks ago. New neighbors moved in two doors down and luckily we have great other neighbors that watch out for us. Get to know the rest of your neighbors, really know them. Interact with them, speak to everyone as if they are your family. When people like this move in and see that you know everyone, they tend to see what kind of neighborhood they have moved into and don't want to be the outsiders if indeed they are doing bad things. When we arrived home, our neighbor came to us and told us that the new neighbors were throwing rocks at our cars. My husband approached them and told them that we should treat each other like neighbors. They denied they did it and when told that our neighbor saw them, they couldn't deny any longer. He told them that we watch out for everyone here and we want the neighborhood to remain this way. The new neighbors agreed to not cause any more commotion. So, far it want from loud music all the time to not a peep.

You and your neighbors have what it takes to create a safe block. Changing behaviour with peer pressure works. Most of the time people who violate the peace have never learned how to co-exist. Thank you for sharing this.

One of the most frustrating things about living in Bronzeville is that fact that there's no dog park. My dog loves to play with other dogs but seldom has the opportunity given that there isn't a central gathering place.

I have a yard now but didn't have one for years so I got good at scoping out secure areas where my dog could play. Wondering if anyone is up for a dog meetup. I'm open to anywhere in Bronzeville, Hyde Park or any surrounding area.

I usually take my dog to the school yards at the elementary schools in the area or vacant lots that are fenced in and manicured. (There's one on the corner of 39th & Vincennes)

Depending on how much interest there is we can always set up something more formal at a later date.

  • There is a dog park meeting tomorrow evening at 4448 S. State Street at 6:30pm. I am seeking to work with residents in organizing a Bronzeville Dog PAC for the new dog park being planned for 44th and Calumet. Representatives from the South Loop Dog PAC will be there to share their experiences in maintaining the two dog parks in the South Loop.

  • That's awesome! Thx for the information.

“There comes a time that black people will have to shake up the Democratic Party [candidates] because then, in the next election when they make us some promises, they will keep them,” Meeks said.

“I am tired of what the Democratic Party is doing to black people. Our vote is automatic. If you vote Democratic, 96 out of 96 times, they don’t have to wonder where black people are. Once the election is over, Democrats have no incentive to deliver on their campaign promises,” he added.

“This is the safest time for us to break the cycle. We can make other people come to our community and vie for our votes. We can put ourselves into the game because right now we are out of the game,” concluded Rev James Meeks.

4th Ward Alderman Will Burns, you seem to be in control of these major construction projects.

Alderman Burns, please inform your tax paying constituents who you are ultimately accountable too, how our young able bodied men and women currently living in the historic Bronzeville community can become gainfully employed in designing and building these 3 three new brides in Bronzeville?

Alderman Burns you have been duly notified that the tax paying citizens currently living in the 4th Ward will be duly frustrated, if we begin to see a bunch of white and Hispanics working on these bridge construction projects in our community under you leadership.

If you want, we will provide space at the Bronzeville Visitor Information Center to host a town hall meeting about how your constituency will be able to work on these three bridge installation projects.

4th Ward Alderman Burns, you will be held accountable on this economic empowerment infrastructure development issue!!!

Bronzeville is more than a name of a neighborhood

There are signs all throughout the area that it is coming to life, new restaurants, residential housing with hefty price tags, old historical buildings being restored with new purposes. That it is important that our History is preserved in the development of Bronzeville and this is paramount on so many levels. There is a great story here that we can all embrace and celebrate, this is a historic tourist destination. Think South! Mayor, this could mean Jobs, business opportunities, access to same Lakefront, this rich History just waiting to be told, this is where we need to start.

Thanks Rick for the kind words, but I grew up in Chicago in the 30s and 40s, got tear gassed in Grant Park in '68, lived through McCarthy and the John Birch Society, and I want no part of the American brand of conservatism. I would say more, but it would be extremely impolite on my part. In any case, I accept the compliment, but I really must decline the invitation. Keep on truckin'.

Street Lights Out AGAIN 3500-3700 King Drive

Alderman Burns, where are you on this? Once again as I write this (745pm on September 15), there are NO STREET LIGHTS on either side of the street between 3500 and 3700 blocks on King Drive, the third time this has happened in the last week and who knows how many times in the last year. What are YOU doing to address this issue which is a MAJOR safety issue? Time and time again we contact 311 and your office and the issue still occurs. Your office has done an inadequate job in handling this major concern...tell us, what are you doing to address this???
