The gym is owned by Graham who has to be one of the nicest individuals I have encountered in a long time. Its a family run business and Graham has a staff of extremely skilled kickboxing trainers that will whip you in shape. They may look a little intimidating at first but once you get past the exterior appearance they are as kind and friendly as Graham. I have never kicked boxed before but I am willing to give it a shot. I figure why not get cut and develop the skills needed to defend myself in the event the need arises! I should mention there are free classes starting next week so you should come check it out. I posted a photo as well so you can see what the space looks like. I should mention the picture does not do the space any justice.

Hope you see you there.

West Loop needs bodega

We need a bodega in the west loop, west of Racine and south of Washington. Currently residents in the area have precious few if any options to purchase basic foodstuffs without trekking several blocks. Walkability is key to this neighborhood's success.

  • NAFSBUC Walking my Fitbit and Flatcoat 10k steps/day

The Ashland, Ogden, Monroe area is sooo under served. I just don't understand it. Why Walgreens on Western and zilch on Ashland or Damen...grrr

  • A CVS store would be ideal. Right now you need to take public transportation or drive to get to these CVS locations:

    1. Western and Chicago Avenue
    2. Roosevelt and Racine
    3. Madison and Kedzie
    4. Odgen and Chicago Avenue
    5. Western and Division (by the Chicago Fire Department)

I am surprise CVS did not bid/least the Madison and Ashland lot (former Kentucky Fried Chicken location).

Mariachi band still playing at 11:13pm

Isn't there a noise ordinance time limit between 9pm-8am? Some place behind Noble St I want to say is throwing a house backyard party outside with a live mariachi band. I can hear them and I live 2 blocks over and in the back of of the building and can clearly hear them. Why has the police not stopped them and is this not annoying any of my other neighbors?? I can't sleep!!

  • DA long time neighbor

I live on Noble near the park and I didn't hear anything but do sympathize w you. Since I live by the park, we often have to put up w people playing ball and/or drinking well past midnight. The police will do nothing unless we call them so I suggest you do the same next time especially when you have to get up early the next day.

  • The band was pleasant and understandably it was a Saturday night.... I'm sure we all had party's or attended one that carried on till midnight at one time in our lives... Instead of me complaining I decided to sit on my balcony with a glass of wine and enjoy it...

WATER: Non-metered account v metered for 2-flat

Hi neighbors, Just curious if anyone had any success with installing meter save in their 2-flat. My water bills have gone from $300 -$600 per 6 month use, and when I called to inquire, I was told it's because of an unmetered account.

I joked that I should start selling the water to other people to cover the crazy increase, and bizarrely enough the rep told me I should. Oh, Chicago.

Just wanted to inquire from fellow neighbors before I sign up.

  • Last point.
Based on my experience, I believe most Chicagoans are overpaying when not metered. My bills went down significantly after installing a meter. There are probably some who just use so much water that they may not. I ask you, do you think the city would let you get water at a discount by being non-metered?

  • Our bill was $200+ every six month and had it changed to meter so now $30+ bi-monthly. We also got a rain barrel from the city to water the plants.

Thank You For Supporting Our Park Community Fundraiser

All, I wanted to thank the community for supporting our Bartelme Park Fundraiser. It was a huge success and we had over 650 people in attendance. Also, we exceeded our fundraising goal and you should be on the lookout for park improvements next year. I have included a few photos that were taken by one of our volunteers for your viewing pleasure.

News stand needed in west end of West Loop

The West Loop is a virtual newspaper/bookstore desert, especially when compared to other well-to-do Chicago neighborhoods. There's still a sizable population for printed newspapers from across the nation and throughout the world. We need a good news stand, west of Racine.

  • NAFSBUC Walking my Fitbit and Flatcoat 10k steps/day

Can not even buy a Tribune on the street corner or at BlueLine west of Halsted. So annoying

On behalf of the Smith Park Advisory Council (SPAC), I would like to thank the Illinois Secretary of State's Office Mobile Unit, (SOSMU) for coming out to Smith Park on July 26th and to all of those who participated in utilizing this great service.

The Movie in the Park took place on July 22nd and over 300 residents attended the event. At the request of community members, SPAC is in the process of providing a second movie in the park soon; hopefully in September, after Labor Day. Due to the school schedules, the movie will be shown on a Saturday night in order to accommodate everyone. We will keep everyone posted as to the exact date and movie showing.

More excitingly and for the first time, Smith Park will host a Circus in the Park. This 2-day event will take place on Saturday, September 27th and Sunday, September 28th, with two showings/times; one at 2 p.m. and the second at 5 p.m., with all proceeds benefiting improvements for the Chicago Park Districts. Tickets are selling quickly so get yours now! If you are interested in attending a performance at Smith Park, please click on this link to purchase your tickets in advance: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/804080

The Ukrainian Festival will take place at Smith Park on August 23 and 24, 2014. The time will be from 12 p.m. until 10 p.m. There is a $5.00 suggested donation. Enjoy the music, food and fun.

Finally, if you are not aware, the Cook County Assessor's office has opened a location in the West Town Community to file a Property Tax Appeal. If you feel your property taxes are too high and would like to appeal them, you may do so online. Click on this link for assistance: http://www.cookcountyassessor.com/Internet_Appeals/ResidentialAppealsearch.aspx
You must have your property index number handy in order to complete this form. Once you have provided your information, a representative from the Assessor's office will contact you. THE DEADLINE TO FILE IS AUGUST 18, 2014.
