Police chase 1500 block Melrose Alley

Came home about 4:15 today ( Friday) to about 4 or 5 policemen chasing a black guy (in a brown jacket and with a backpack), down my alley ( 1500 block Melrose)....the chase started at School Street and the guy took off into the T of the alley between School and Melrose, then headed east down the alley, with the police in pursuit...then he managed to evade them by running between two houses ( either out to Melrose or School , I didn't see which)..does anyone know what happened?? Too much drama on the 1500 block lately!!!!

Arrest in alley behind Addison

There were just 4 CPD SUV's behind our place on Addison between Hamilton and Hoyne. This was right outside the coach house which has been mentioned here before (loud, thrashing, banging thread). An arrest was made. White male, facial hair, black hoodie, black baseball cap. Does anyone know what happened? Unwritten kitten, are you home? Are you ok?

A Lakeview woman was beaten in an armed robbery early Wednesday morning by a man whose jacket retails for over $1,000.

Police and a fire department ambulance met the victim near the crime scene at Lakewood and Henderson shortly after 3AM.

She told them that the offender took her purse, which contained a cell phone and other items, before fleeing southbound on Sheffield toward Belmont.

The robber is described as a black man, 5'9" tall, and 150 pounds. He wore a distinctive red Pelle Pelle brand letterman jacket with white lettering and "sequins" on the back.

Other officers and even the ambulance driver reported that they saw the offender minutes before the robbery call came in—once at the Subway restaurant near Belmont and Clark and again walking eastbound on Buckingham Place near Halsted.

Unfortunately, officers were unable to locate the man after the robbery was reported.

The incident is recorded as an armed robbery in CPD case HX468088.

Hi. I live in a coach house behind Addison, between Hamilton and Hoyne. Every night, there are extremely loud noises at any and all hours of the night. They are absolutely not animals. Once in a while, there is a boom that shakes the foundation of the house. After wearing ear plugs with my head next to a large floor fan on high, I was still woken up by tremors.
The neighbors all claim that they don't hear anything, but I don't see how that is a real possibility. One night, after the earth shook me awake, I walked outside at like 4am and started thrashing on the garage next to our house... loudly. I literally took the side of my fist and started pounding this old loose garage with bursts for about a minute. This was a warm night with people s windows open. Nobody stirred. I walked around afterwards for about another min. Nothing. Another night at like 3-4am, I walked out into the basement of the two flat we're attached to with tenants inside, slammed the door behind me, started rummaging through our storage, walked back outside, slamming the door behind me and slammed the fence under their bedroom windows repeatedly. I talked to them the next day and they said they heard nothing.

Now, I am not a light sleeper. I used to live above a bus stop on Ashland and Irving park. I slept like a baby over there. Either this neighborhood has gone rogue or the house is having night terrors.

I've been sleeping at a friends house recently so my blood pressure doesn't start boiling.

This is ruining my life. The police aren't going to do anything (talked to them already). Cameras are too expensive. I have a strong feeling it will be a complete waste of money.

My fiancé can confirm the noises.

Recycle dry cleaning hangers?

Anyone know of a place or organization interested in reusing the hangers from dry cleaners. I can never bring myself to throw them away.

  • Jeff Life long Chicago kid

Gene that would be great. I think folks can send emails via this site.

  • I return them to the cleaners. I remember there was a shortage or something last year or hangers and it made the news. Donating them is nice too!

Pet Safety on Halloween

1. Dangerous Costumes: Never leave a pet unattended. Costume parts may be chewed & ingested which can be life threatening. Pets can become tangled in elaborate, tight-fitting costumes with strings, ties, belts & sashes. Difficulty in mobility can lead to bodily injury or strangulation.
2. Decorations & Fire Hazards: Easy-to-reach decorations or candles can be eaten or knocked over, potentially leading to choking, foreign body ingestion, electrical shock & even burns or a household fire. Choose pet-safe products.
3. Noise: Doorbells, squeals, chatter outside the door, & strangers in unfamiliar/scary costumes can alarm pets increasing their anxiety. Take extra precaution! Harness, crate, or leash your animal, put up a baby gate or leave your pet in a back room to keep them calm.
4. Toxic Candy: Chocolate & xylitol, a sweetener found in many candies, can be extremely toxic to pets. Lollipops & their sticks can be choking hazards & cause a painful obstruction that may require surgery to remove. Wrapped candies can lead to chocking or an obstruction & upset stomach. Keep pet-safe treats on hand to satisfy your pet. Make sure all candy is out of your pet's reach.
5. Lost Pets: NEVER let your dog or cat wander outside unattended. A prankster or mean-spirited individual could be mess with your pet. Keep pets indoors or escort them on a leash if you include your pet in the festivities. Sudden noises & strange-looking costumes can also spook your pet, causing them to run away. Adorn your pet with a collar, leash, & ID tags in case you become separated.
Emergency Care: Locate a 24-hour veterinary clinic if your family veterinarian is not available. If you suspect your pet has consumed a toxic substance contact the Pet Poison Helpline 1-800-213-6680

Development near Lincoln and Roscoe

There are 5 vacant, contiguous buildings on west side of Lincoln just south of Roscoe...One of the buildings (which was formerly a thrift shop) is undergoing a major construction, rehab...Does anyone know if there is anything in the works there?

  • Chilebrity- This development (link below) will also help revitalize the strip of Lincoln you are talking about. The current building and retail is a drag on the whole block.

There is much less density in that area, with 3-flats being converted to single-families, and DePaul kids living in other hoods. Not enough foot traffic to support the available retail. The density from this development and the hospital development should help.

I know it can be a slow process, but i know its not unusual for these prospective tenants to back out... A Peets coffee was supposed to replace the Caribbou Coffee that was in my building on School Street, but they backed out, and then the Pandera also apparently backed out of the deal to move in the new construction on 3300 N. Ashland....I think the Bareburger restaurant will do really well there... There's really no other good restaurants in that stretch of Lincoln other than Frasca, which does really well... Wishbone stopped serving dinners over a year ago and it wouldn't surprise me if something happened there..

Gang Sign Removal & Gangway fence

Thank you to whoever removed the gang graffiti symbol next to the Alderman's office. Someone contacted me last week about it's exact location and the next day it was gone. I also noticed a wooden fence had been installed in the gangway/alleyway I was mugged from on Belmont & Sheffield behind Einsteins. That alleyway gave the criminals who hang out on the corner easy access to rob people and flee. I'm glad to see our messages are making a difference & improving the neighborhood.

Deciphering gang graffiti

Most seem to be located near other graffiti. In one case, the sticker contained the dates Oct. 23, Oct. 24, Oct. 25 and Oct. 26. Anyone have any insights? There seems to be a URL on some of the stickers, but I'd rather not get my computer infected with a virus. Google didn't turn up anything useful. The photographs were taken in the Roscoe underpass, but I also noticed a lot of the stickers toward the south end of the harbor.

"Neighbor" in Distress

Then asked if there were any police or firemen on the block (I told him there were, but didn't know their houses). Then, finally, asked for cab fare (also denied).

I guess there's a chance this guy was on the up-and-up and having a really bad night, but this rings all kinds of warning bells for me. Anyone else encounter him?

  • It sounds like the same person, minus the winter coat part. Does she have gray hair and is maybe between the ages of 55-65? SO dammn shady.

like so many of the 'bums' you see begging on the street, who get in their car at the end of the day and drive home.

i'm ALL for help thy neighbor, but don't be a sucker and get played by these dirtbags.

it's not surprising these people prey on north center though. people in harder neighborhoods aren't falling for this stuff. my buddy takes an eastbound bus to work in north center and he says that as you get closer, all the hs kids are afraid to go to the back of the bus and be around the other kids. thats messed up. its like a little pocket of suburbia in the city. i guess that's another conversation sorta, but not really.

@ Liz - Rest assured that my stylist doesn't give one care about whether or not I know her last name or not. Here are things about which she cares:

    a. arriving on time - I am never late. Ever.

    b. seeing her regularly - I see her every three weeks rain, snow, sleet, hail, sickness, health, marriage, death

    c. most importantly, tipping well - I tip her 25% every time.

I am not friends with my stylist. I am not going to the salon to forge a friendship. We have nothing in common. She's a lovely woman who is fantastic at being a stylist and that's why I see her. I am kind to her. I am respectful of her time. I refer my friends and family to her regularly. I simply don't understand how her last name would be of any importance to me, especially since it's not publicly posted anywhere.

Not a lot of parking space, so grocery store seems doubtful....I heard vitamin store is one of the tenants..Having a hard time understanding that there's that much of a demand for vitamins..Have no idea what else is coming...Each of the three units is pretty good size..

Let's talk about the Halloween Parade!

The annual Halloween parade is coming soon and I just wanted to talk about it.
I look forward to it every October.
What does everyone think of it?

I'll start:

PROS: Feels welcoming for all walks of life including young children
Has a good neighborhood vibe. Doesn't "stress" our neighborhood like Pride Parade.

CONS: Hard to know when the parade has started and ended. So it could use a little more structure. There are hardly any floats, just people walking....

Here's the information that I found for 2014:

FYI: I'm have no ties to the parade other than it's about a block from where I live.

  • I've always watched from Aldine/Roscoe. So, I thought it's always started at Belmont and ended somewhere north of Roscoe.

  • Have you heard about this?
The Halsted parade organizers are calling this year's theme "FreakShow"
Yep, they're advertising that they'll have unique drink specials, people dressed in provocative and scary outfits, and other "curiosities".
Wow, sounds like quite an evening is in store.
    Yep.Yep.
Yea, actually, the regulars who frequent Halsted are calling it by another name :

Outrageous.

I was walking my dog, so that's why I was over there at that time.

Stolen packages from Ashland Ave , just north of Grace St

I had three packages that were delivered in the vestibule of my apartment (locked door with large clear glass panel). Some time yesterday in the afternoon and early evening, they were taken from behind the locked door. I'm guessing that someone was really smart about opening up a locked door that doesn't have a bolt lock and really wanted some ladies clothing. :(

Advice on Sealing Split-Faced Block

Hi neighbors - For those who live in a condo with split-faced block, any advice or lessons you can share on having it treated to protect against moisture? I'm on the board for a 6-unit condo with split-faced block on two sides of the building. We last had it treated in 2010, and I'm calling some contractors for quotes to get it done again in the spring. That said, I wanted to do a little research beforehand. Any information you can share on local contractors, types of sealing products, or things to ask about or watch out for would be much appreciated!

Though the blocks show some discoloration at one of the corners, I have never had it sealed and see no reason to do so. When I built it out, I had 3 mil. vapor barrier and thermax insulation placed in the firred-out void between the block and the interior drywall, which has prevented any seepage. I think sealing generally is a scam, although I understand that the block industry may have cheapened their product years ago because of all the demand.

Or roxul. or closed cell foam. if you would have used fiberglass, though... your cavity could be lined with moldy insulation by now.

another issue that's just as likely to be cause problems is water leaking in to wall via the parapet wall. I have seen new construction condo where this was the issue more so than the split-face block itself.

They gave me a dirty look, and as I walked away they went into another room. I was worried about this, next week, tires slashed. Coincidence? I think not. I also think they don't need patrols. I don't want to see my favorite neighborhood turn into a cop hangout where EVERYONE is watched, i mean, don't you hate it when someone is watching over your shoulder when reading a book, or when someone won't stop asking questions when you're trying to watch a movie? I think this won't happen again, these punks wouldn't hit the same place twice. Although it does tick me off that my tires were slashed. Oh well.

  • I believe that this attack was not a conspiracy because there where also tags that said DW everywhere and eagles #2 I'm not sure what this means but it doesn't make any sense maybe everyone was angry with there neighbor or there is a slashing tire group that doesn't like tires for some reason
