Seeking Nanny

We are seeking a full-time nanny for our 2 year old son and 5 year old daughter beginning in May, 2015 in the Southport Corridor. Our daughter is in all day preschool M-F. We need an energetic person willing to handle the pickup and drop off at a local school, explore the neighborhood with our Son, paly lots of trains and cars, read stories, and visit the park. Summer break will allow for the care of both children. A long-term commitment is preferred, but not a necessity. If you would like to be our Mary Poppins, please send me a personal message for contact info.

  • Beth Barer Southport Corridor Resident

Please email me your contact info and a bit about yourself. Bwmurphy99@gmail. Com

  • HI Beth,
Bella is really excited about this opportunity, she is really great with kids an loves spending time with them. I hate to be the crazy mom, I want her to things on her own but I can imagine it would be a little unsettling hiring someone off the internet. If you want to call me or email me feel free.... 630.308.0918 melissa@bellaink.com

Bike Storage Ideas

I live in a second floor apartment and am looking for ideas of how to store my bicycle without having to haul it up and down the stairs and keep it in my living room. There is space under the deck in the back, about 4.5 feet high, and I am looking for some sort of weather-proof and SECURE storage shed, or something along those lines. Does anyone know of anything that might work? I would use my bike WAY more if I could store it at ground level

Xfinity outage in Lakeview area

Hello, Neighbors. It has been at least ten days since myself and several of my neighbors have been without Xfinity (cable) We were told this is "an area-wide problem" and "that crews are working hard fix the issue." The only thing we were offered was a fifteen dollar credit towards to the balance of our next bills. Has anyone else in the Lakeview/Roscoe Village area been having the same problem. In the past, Xfinity has only been out for no more than a day or so. Thank you.

  • Agreed - its time to change firms for you. 10 days is way past the unacceptable point.

We're in South Lakeview with Comcast. Generally few issues, but the one big once we experienced was 3 months ago for 3 days. Not good, but we saw a Comcast crew at the phone pole in our alley for several hours a day for each of those 3 days. They apparently had to replace some sort of master controller for our block.

Bad but not too bad. Your situation is wow bad.

  • Email we_can_help@cable.comcast.com - you will get a fast reply on Monday - it totally works, we emailed that exec support address and had two trucks there helping the next day.

Flat Roofer Recommendation Needed

Hi all,
My 3-flat was built in 2008 and unfortunately the flat roof portion has leaked in 2013, 2014, and now 2015. (I am assuming it is from the roof, but might be coming in somewhere else.) I read that they should be guaranteed for 7 years, and clearly the person our building has used the past 2 years to fix the leak is not entirely qualified for the project. Can anyone recommend a company that will diagnose, fix, and guarantee the work? Thanks much!

  • d3 NOH

if it's a cinder block parapet building I'd bet my paycheck it's coming from that. I'd check that it's 100% sealed everywhere ... everywhere. caulk. a good paint that will seal the block itself. seal the caps of the parapet itself. If it's a persistent issue you can extend the membrane to the top ridge of the parapet cap. had this exact issue in a 3 flat that was newly built.

  • Carl E. Belles Condo Board Member and resident

We have had a very similar experience with our building from 2007. I will second the recommendation for Matthews Roofing - their pricing seems on par with everyone else and their work is excellent.

Yes, the joint between the roof and the wall/parapet will deserve close attention; that's the most likely place for a problem. Additionally, we had to seal the brick facing of the building, and re-set the capstones on all the parapet walls. The original construction was inadequate and had to be completely overhauled.

    Good luck!

Moving — couch to donate/give away

Hi everyone, my husband and I are moving to Bucktown today (just in time to avoid the Wrigley noise!) and we have a lot of stuff that we need to give away, including a couch. It does not qualify to be picked up by Brown Elephant (it has too many stains), but it was a really expensive couch and I feel like someone should have it instead of us throwing it away. The frame of the couch is in great condition, and if it's reupholstered it would be very nice.

Does anyone know what we can do with it? If we do have to resort to throwing it away, how do we go about doing that? (Or is anyone interested in taking it?)

  • d3 NOH

you can call 311 and request a special trash pickup. your alderman can probably request direct to streets and sans typically too

  • Usually not a good idea to put mattresses, couches and other flammable things in alleys that could be quickly set to fire. We had an arsonist loose last year who was burning items in alleys.

Southport/Grace Store Closing

I was strolling on Southport (Southport and Grace) and noticed signs posted on the window of A Little Bit of This-Unique Monogram Boutique. I found out they are sadly closing within two weeks. They have some major price reductions and it appears they are trying to get rid of their inventory before they close for good.

  • I'm sad to hear this. I remember when krista opened her original store on Lincoln - probably over 10 years ago. I did a lot of business there at the time and have been happy to see her success over the years.
She is a talented, kind and attentive person. I wish her the very best.

  • I live right around the corner from the store and hope to see another unique, family owned shop open up in its place. Wishing Krista a speedy recovery and sending good thoughts to her family!

City Sticker Renewal Form

Has anyone else out there missed their new city sticker renewal form as should be sent out by the city according to the new personalized expiration schedule? I'm regretting not putting the renewal in my calendar. Just got a $200 ticket and the online renewal form is not cooperating. Ugh.

  • My sticker expires at the end of May. I received the snail mailed renewal notice last week sometime with the option to get a 1 or 2 year renewal. Re-newed on line just now. Took about 5 minutes. Now to wait and see when the sticker actually gets to me.

  • As a follow up, I did the on line renewal on Monday. The new sticker showed up on Thursday. It comes in an unmarked envelope, which I assume is for security reasons. It would be easy to think of it as junk mail, if it didn't say City Hall on it. Over all, a very easy process.

LOST - Small Black Cat

Please help me find my small male cat. He is very sweet and small. Repairman let him out today and he is not familiar with the area.

Located just south of Belmont on Southport.

Reward if found.

  • Annie, he has been neutered and his eyes are not quite yellow. Did you see him around?

  • I took in a little black cat who was definitely NOT neutered this past week. And then re-homed him with a very nice neighbor when we figured out my boyfriend is allergic to him.

But take comfort that there are lots of people out there who probably did the same with your kitty. Keep looking, Craig!

Wrigley Noise

Is the noise coming from Wrigley field even louder tonight? Am I going crazy? I've lived on the Southport corridor for three years (Southport and Belmont) and I've never been able to hear the games until now. I'm trying to gauge what to expect...

  • Guys...they are working on the rehab...it's going to take them some time to dial everything in. I don't think it's like they just tell a guy named Ed to turn the volume down from 10 to 6....I would imagine there's some work to be done calibrating everything to get the volume and direction of speakers just right.

  • sos

If there is no alderman response, I suggest going straight to the mayor. Not that this will expedite results, but at some point the mayor would get on the alderman to take action so their constituents stop bothering him.

Of course Tunney wants to reverse this law. He's a scumbag.

To sum it up, Tunney signed a proposal that would make it nearly impossible for tenants to guarantee the return of their security deposit, even with court action. I am disgusted by him and his actions. Does he do ANYTHING that benefits his constituents?

The link is safe for work. I originally copied and posted the text but it's too long.

  • I really should proofread more. That and posting a comment while eating lunch clearly isn't a winning strategy for me.

  • :) It's okay. At least you know you have a winning strategy inside there somewhere. As for me, I do not have such confidence.

Desperately Seeking Apartment

Hello! I am a single mother of three in Roscoe Village. My fiance and I (himself a father of two) have been waiting to get married for years. We're almost there, but first we have to find a space to combine our households, and that is proving frighteningly difficult. We need a 3+ bedroom, 1.5+ bathroom within the Audubon school attendance boundaries (so my younger daughters don't have to leave their school). Any leads would be met with true heartfelt gratitude from a couple finally ready to tie the knot after so, so long! :)

  • Deb Karp Humboldt Park

What's your price point? I have lots of options depending.

  • Wonder if Menard Johnson realty can help? Smack dab in the neighborhood and usually plugged into everything around here.
