Neighborhood arsonist is sure to appreciate the Christmas trees...

I see that once again some group has once again attached Christmas trees to the lightpoles around Lakeview. When they did it last year, it seemed like a boneheaded waste of money, since most were dead by early to mid-December. But now that we have a serial arsonist roaming Lakeview? You've got to be kidding me. What rocket scientist thought this was a good idea? I wonder how many will be used as kindling between now and January.

I could not locate the date of tree give away for this year on the December 2014 calendar on http://centrallakeview.com/events/?view=calendar, as no events are listed during December yet. They will likely put the info online after this weekend if not during it.. The money may be better spent on a more environmentally friendly decoration, less expensive decoration, or more practical purposes. The dual use of the trees, part public decoration for a time and part private home use does not seem like a really well thought out idea. You would think that the critics from last year would have been heard and their logical opinions taken into account when the CLMA were thinking about repeating the tree decoration plan this year. Business leaders out of tune with the public interest and having poor decision making or plans is something that does not surprise me. They have plans and feel obligated to carry them out, even those plans hurts the environment, wastes money or creates a fire hazard outside or inside buildings.

If an organizations wants to give away trees, they should do so shortly after they are cut down and provide tree maintenance/safety instructions at the time so that a fire danger is avoided inside homes as well. Leaving them exposed without a water supply at the base, will lead to dried out trees and a fire hazard once put indoors. To contact the Central Lakeview Merchant's Association:

Lots of Cops on Henderson

Does anyone know whats happening on Henderson between Damen and Wolcott? There are about 15 cop cars and the street is blocked off.

  • Wait: "It's good to know [the police] will show up when needed"???????

Is this the city we live in now?

Although in the 19th, we can't even expect that, what with all the RAP going on.

I have direct knowledge as to what happened as it was my friends house. Some a-hole called 911 saying there was a domestic with shots fired.. the police broke down his door thinking someone was in trouble however, No one was home at the time. ... he has been having problems wIth a neighbor and thinks he was the one who called in the incident as the police said the call came from the area. Its called "swatting" where you call in a fake emergency thus having the police break down the door thinking someone is in need of help.

Attempted break in - laundry room

Someone smashed the glass of our building's basement around 1300 W Barry. We called 911 and when the police arrived, they stated that someone may have tried to get to the laundry machine to steal the money. People watch out.

  • Sometimes it doesn't have to be a break-in situation.
When I had a condo in a Near North high-rise there was a rape in the laundry room in that the rapist was only staying with someone in the building and he was doing his laundry.
While there he met a resident who was doing her wash, too, and she assumed that he was a fellow owner and let her guard down. Then he made his move.

  • @Becky - that's terrifying. Not 10 minutes before we heard the noise, I walked by that window to get food from a delivery driver.

Power outage

Our power is out on the 4200 block of N. Wolcott. They said it should be back on by 1:00. Anyone else?

  • The lights flickered in the 4600 block of Ravenswood but we still have power. They are doing some pretty heavy construction over here. Maybe they hit something.

  • SBloom architect, dad and a half, 25 years north side

Power was out on Wolcott & Winchester north of Lawrence for about an hour from just before 11 am to just before noon. Com Ed said about 2000 customers affected. Cause -equipment failure.

Cinnamon Ice Cream

I fully admit this is a ridiculous question. Does anyone know of a place that sells cinnamon ice cream (store, shop, any place)? I've tried Mariano's and Jewel. I used to live in MN and during the holidays Kemp's would have it at the local grocers. I've heard that Blue Bunny also has it, but I haven't seen it at Jewel. (This is my mom's favorite and she is old and not well, so I'd like to find it before Thanksgiving.)

  • Menchie's Frozen Yogurt at River Point Shopping Center (Clybourn) has Cinnabon flavor and I am almost positive you can take it home by the pint. It's killer.

  • Whole Foods in Lincoln Park has a gourmet brand in pints Hope Mom feels better soon!

Pens and pencil donation

I am an office supply hoarder. It doesn't help that my office supplier give us free samples of items. I have a shoebox of pens and pencils that I need to get rid of - does anyone know where I can donate these?

  • jasper1055 Roscoe Villiage

My girlfriend is a 3rd grade teacher and is always looking for donations for their art projects.... Let me know and I can pick them up... I'm in Roscoe Village. Addison and Damen.

I'm assuming Burley will take them. Arts of Life a nonprofit that works with adults with developmental disabilities would be another choice.

A lot of police activity on Leavitt and Bryon

Does anyone know why there was so much police activity on Bryon and Leavitt tonight? 11/24 around 6:30.

Thanks

  • Actually I meant Bryon and Hamilton

  • Jason NC north center resident

NBC was shooting a television drama on that block.

  • Frank H 71 Prodigal Northcenter native, back after 10yrs away

That would explain why there were four unmarked white passenger vans idling at Byron & Hoyne at 5:30PM. I thought a dignitary was stopping by for a surprise visit.

Dirt disposal

Any idea how to get rid of old dirt from container gardens? Looks like the yard waste disposal doesn't include soil. I have 20-30 gallons of potting soil used with vegetables for one season. Thoughts on where I can put this?

  • Can you spread it over your lawn or parkway?

  • Kathleen 12 year Wrigleyville resident

I agree with above! I only rotate my soil every three years. I don't even cover my containers in the winter and always have beautiful flowers in the spring.

Looking for a worthy cause to donate childrens toys/home stuff to...

We like to rotate out our still-newish toys and home stuff. Rather than send to Salvation Army for resale, we were hoping to donate to a cause here in Northcenter. Maybe a shelter or support center for single moms/dads, etc.

Ideas? Recommendations?

  • Ravenswood Community Child Care Center (RC4) provides very affordable child care to teenage parents (in addition to full-paying parents from the community), so long as those teens are pursuing their high school diploma or college degree. To donate toys to these kids, you can contact the daycare directly (www.rc4cares.com) or contact Parenting PROgress (http://ravenscov.org/mission-outreach/parenting-progress/), a program that provides support for these parents and their children.

  • SixtyTwoPercentWater Neighborhood Blogger

Thanks all for the recommendations. We went with HGS and they could not be any more appreciative of the donation. I feel like the things went to a good place.

In the past, I've seen flocks migrating, but never so many in such a short time, directly over this area (St. Ben's). I guess it's not just OHare that's changing their flight plans.
