Where can I sell my bike.

Hi there. I was wondering if anyone knew of any used bikes stores or any other places they would recommend trying to sell a used bike. I have it listed in Craigslist, but unfortunately I feel like CL has a bad rep with bikes and people may steer away from looking there. Thanks in advance for your help!

From the GGNA neighborhood group: Hello Neighbors, Alderman Moreno's office has confirmed that the community meeting for the old Max Gerber site will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 30th at the Candela Restaurant at 2451 N. Milwaukee Avenue. This project team has requested a zoning change from C1-1 to RBPDw/B3.5 underlying/TOD for a fifteen and an eleven story connected towers with 253 rental units, 70 parking spaces and retail on the first floor at 2293 N. Milwaukee Ave. I hope you can come and please tell neighbors who live close to this project about the meeting.

Curious to hear what others think about TOD development. I believe it's by the same team that put up the silver TOD building at Division and Ashland.

I thought TOD usually came with less parking than 70 spots. The one at Division and Ashland has zero parking spots.

I think it's interesting that the city is going back to the way they used to build near major intersections and transit hubs such as this. Like the coyote building at Damen and Milwaukee. Or the hairpin arts building. Smaller units, taller, more dense.

I think it's a good idea, as Logan Square has become less and less populated over the years. I seem to recall reading we have a fraction of the population we once had.

I think it would help make the area more vibrant. I've lived in 100+ unit buildings in the past, and people have the misconception that all 100 people will be causing traffic, or waiting in line at the El all at the same time. But even with 100 or 200 units, the fraction that are doing any one thing at the same time are slim to none.

Should be a lively conversation. People get all up in arms about change and the threat of shadows or traffic.

I say bring a tiny bit of our neighborhood's density back! Come join the fun conversation. For those unfamiliar, this development is slated for the now empty lot across from Cozy Corner diner.

Derisive comments about the neighbors who don't share your views isn't a generally accepted debate tactic.

I couldn't make the meeting due to family obligations, I guess that means I don't get to be a part of "Busterville," fortunately you do not appear to be a legitimate non-profit community organization that holds regular meetings.

  • Was it my "silly synopsis" you found derisive? I'm curious which comments you took offense to. I know the "silly synopsis" sounded a little jaded. But the comments from my neighbors at the meeting were so harsh and offensive. My favorite comment was when they wanted the first speaker to...

But the comments from my neighbors at the meeting were so harsh and offensive. My favorite comment was when they wanted the first speaker to prove he lived in the neighborhood because they didn't believe him (and because he was too new, his findings had no merit). And when he said his data was from the US census, a guy yelled out "Census! It makes no Sense-Us." He screamed that he didn't believe US Census data and that the guy hadn't knocked on his door to "census" him...so he didn't believe the data. You're a very clever man Carter...wise...and you're more than welcome in Busterville...whatever that is. I find your tone quite derisive. Not sure if thats what you intend.

Bicyclists Be Careful!

I was on a packed southbound Halsted bus this morning that had to make a very sudden stop in order to avoid a bicyclist who had swerved across the lane in front of it. I know a lot of Logan Square folks (Logan Squarians? Squarites?) ride to work downtown, so I'd like to offer up a reminder that a) not only can you get yourselves killed by pushing the limits of traffic laws, but b) an entire busload of people may get thrown several feet forward due to reckless bicyclist actions, causing injury to others. Please be considerate and CAREFUL if you're riding on busy streets during rush hour!

Your post was addressed to "Bicyclists" and I am a bicyclist. While I was not the sole intended recipient of your message, it WAS directed towards me, whom as you point out, you have never met. This is both annoying and rude. I am not "taking it personally", I am pointing out that you are extrapolating the behavior of a single individual and applying it to a whole group, ie stereotyping.

I read your post, it was concise and clear. I don't need you to reiterate it or explain your motives.

Mr. Brettner points out that my "mommy" also told me to be careful. At that time she was my legal guardian and I was incapable of making reasonable decisions, so that WAS appropriate. Notice also that he then goes off about "Know-it-all bike Nazis" who want control his behavior. Understand that you have provided him a platform for his own stereotyping.

If the intended goal of your post really is increase safety on the public roadway, verses say, feel better after venting on the the internet by lecturing strangers about something bad that happened to you, then you should probably reconsider the effectiveness of your actions. I doubt any of these offenders are reading your posts and I expect they are unlikely to change their behavior if they are.

With such little likelihood of effecting change and evidence of annoying unrelated third parties and hosting bike-trolls, I would suggest you not post messages in this vein.

  • ch1cag0rob 10+ year Logan Square resident.

Honestly man, you definitely ARE taking this personally, which is downright silly. If you find it "annoying and rude" to utter a politely worded and non-demeaning "be careful" reminder to people choosing to engage in an activity almost anyone can choose to engage in at a moment's notice, then I'd invite you to consider that the problem is probably your sensitivity level.

Unless you've got something positive to add to the conversation moving forward, please QUIT TROLLING this post.

Where are the trick or treaters?

I know the city of Chicago doesn't technically post trick or treating hours, but I expected to see a few groups by now. Am I just too early? Is the weather keeping everyone in?

  • I was wondering if people are even home from work yet. I work in the burbs and traffic coming into the city is a nightmare. I can't decide if we should go trick or treating either, this weather is horrible

  • Becca500 Reverse Commuter and Bike Rider

It's cleared up a tiny bit, not snowing as much. And I've seen a few groups out. Think I just jumped the gun a bit!

  • I just saw some on Bernard and Fullerton. So we'll be out that way in a few.

Lost kitty

My indoor cat, named Animal, escaped sometime yesterday afternoon/evening. He is microchipped but does not have a collar. He does not hear well so we are concerned about his ability to survive outside. He has blue eyes and his fur is a grey/lilac tabby pattern with white underbelly and feet. He is a very friendly cat but can be skittish at times.

He is the best with our toddler. Please keep your eyes out for him today!

  • did you see the recent post from onthewig about the monticello cats? she's a treehouse volunteer & might have tips on getting a scared kitty to come home. i'm glad you've at least been able to spot animal! maybe go out very late at night when the neighborhood is quieter/less stimulating?

  • Or maybe she can help you get a live trap so if kitty comes near in middle of night

Anyone have info to share on any Neighborhood traditions?

Electricity provider

My new apartment allows me to choose an electric provider. Does anyone have recommendations (or warnings) they can share?

Current tenants in the unit use ComEd, so it may be easiest to stick with that, I'm not sure. Any advice is appreciated.

  • I called to cancel Integrys and return to ComEd. I was they would submit the request to change our provider. But was told no refunds were being given out? Is there something specific I should ask for? Thank you for you help!!

  • Mara, I simply asked for a refund of the amount that I overpaid. I received a $100 Visa debit card this week. Good luck.

Crawfish tails

I am looking for a place to buy a few pounds of crawfish tails (with fat if possible). Fresh or frozen is fine, but I want tails, not the whole bug.

Any ideas? Whole Foods carries them but is way too expensive.

Thanks.

  • Y_2_K I aspire to be who I am.

You might also have luck at an Asian market, I've seen them at numerous Asian/Korean markets around town. They'll be frozen n imported from China. My guess is Dirks will be similar in price to Whole Paycheck.

You should be fine w just the tails, the fat that makes them taste different from other shrimplike creatures is in the tail.

Also if you're gonna turn them into Etoufee you should message me w an address, b/c I'll pay top dollar for a bowl of that stuff.

  • I was able to pick up whole head on frozen crawfish from strack and van til earlier this year. I dont know what your plan is with them, but I believe they may have been pre cooked. They worked out just fine for an etouffee, not sure if they'd do as well for a boil being pre cooked.

Fantastic local photographer!

A few weeks ago, I asked EB about recommendations for a local photographer. There were numerous suggestions and, for many reasons, I chose Jennifer Shaffer off Fullerton and Milwaukee. We had a wonderful session this morning! My clan is a handful and she was amazing with my three year and six month old boys. Not only can she handle kids, but it was clear that she is a skilled, knowledgeable and talented photographer. As the holidays draw near, I highly recommend Jennifer for your family pictures.

I don't understand why ever time this Mcdonalds has a promotional event for kids, the signs are only in Spanish. Do they not want any English speaking kids at these events? This is an ongoing thing for this Mcdonalds and I find it very insulting.
Does anyone else think this is wrong??

I'm not seeing how Robin's experience equates to Godwin's Law. This came to mind:

    http://econlog.econlib.org/archives/2013/09/hendersons_godw.html

"When people in a political discussion want to put down other people who even mention Hitler, they will invoke Godwin's Law even if the person compared no one to Nazis or Hitler."

That said, I could care less how McDonald's advertises as far as language. If anything, most people's distaste comes from how they target children with their happy meal toys. It's the Espanol-speakers that ought to be offended here, if anyone.

  • Bearmosa Resident of Hermosa

I worked in marketing. There's a lot of importance placed on language spoken in the home. That's the language of family and friends... brands want to be your friend. When you see an ad in Spanish next time assume this and don't be offended or assume that the targeted audience doesn't know English. They most likely do.

Weather it is Glenn's explanation or Colin's where the truth lies, or a bit of both, it does not explain how anyone involved in the process, from the developer, to the ploicy makers to the funding agencies, can justify spending 2.4 million building a six flat that may appraise at slightly over 1 million the day it is finished. Paradoxically, this actually helps the NIMBY people, as the more expensive affordable housing units are, the fewer can be built. Consider that if $205,000 of public funds goes into a unit of $405,000 (based on the proposed budget), the same public money can be used to build 2 units at $305,000 each, or 4 units at $255,000, costs that are not out of reach for a private developer.

Logan Square Dry Cleaners?

I'm not a fan of either Ruby's or Diversey Cleaners. What is the next closest cleaners in Logan Square that does good work and has good customer service?

  • I gave Mandy's a shot, but they lost the belt on my coat (never did find it) and gave me someone else's pants (3 sets).

  • mandy's has gotten slammed in some yelp reviews but they are always nice to me and reliable with my simple stuff (pants, shirts) and she hemmed some sheer drapes for me at half the cost that anyone else quoted me. but it is small and quirky.

  • i thought damen was being done next, but a sign appeared yesterday on the fence at the western stop that said all bikes must be moved by oct 20 due to train renovation...so that suggests they are doing western next.? i wish they would add more bike racks to all the stops especially while the construction makes us double up at one or another.

  • Jimmy M Grant writer

Damen is still closing Oct 20 and reopening Dec 22. The Western station will remain open during its renovation (since it was extensively rebuilt a little over a decade ago and won't need the same level of repairs), so they're probably just going to be working on both stations at the same time.

Looking for Photo Documentation at LS Farmer's Yesterday

Good Day,
I am hoping to get in touch with the photo documentation who was at the Logan Square Farmer's Market yesterday. She took a picture of me and my friend and said it was a photo documentary of urban Chicago women. Does anyone know who she is or how I can get in touch with her?

  • Try the chamber of commerce. They run the market and usually have a pretty good idea of what goes on there. Good luck!

  • spe

Or it could be a college student doing a project.

Boil Water Advisory on 2600 Kimball

Just saw a notice posted to my front gate that everyone on Kimball from Drummond to Wrightwood should boil all of their drinking water until further notice. What a way to start the weekend! Has anyone called for more information? Any ideas on when the water will be deemed safe to drink again?

  • Milli 3 year Logan Square resident

Ew, Joe. I had the boil advisory on Wrightwood and Central Park. Sounds like you have/had a true break. I always did have to run my faucets for 10-25 min to get rid of the sludge after every water shut off, but it never stuck around and was non existent when we had our advisory. It took us about 48 hours to get ours lifted but our advisory was a mere precaution until test results came back clear.

  • Joe

They said there was an unplanned break, so hopefully it is truly 48 hrs or less and not 48 business hours

Cops rushing into Logan Square Blue Line

Just walked out of the Blur Line stop and an unmarked car roared up, officers leapt out, and ran down to the platform. So I'll be that guy and ask: anyone know what's going on?

Camera repair recommendations?

Morning all,

I have an older model (between 5-10 years) Canon DSLR that my dad gave me after he upgraded. While putting on a lens, it somehow got stuck in a not-quite-on-but-won't-come-off position. It won't turn on and can't take pictures, but I can't get the lens off the camera and I'm afraid to try too hard lest I snap it. Can anyone recommend a quality camera repair place that can "gentle touch" my camera back into working conditions? Bonus if thy can show me some of the features!

  • Tankboy It wasn't me.

International Camera in the Loop fixed up my 5 year old Canon Rebel.

  • Agree with the rec for Central Camera! They're great.

On a different note though - have you tried looking online for the Manual? Canon's are usually pretty widely available in pdf form, and that might be a huge help for you, or at least a good place to start before...

There's also tons of "how to" videos out there on YouTube for DSLR cameras that are generally geared towards Nikon and Canon users as the priority. And while your camera may be an older model, the standard features/buttons/symbols really haven't changed that much.

Watch out for pothole on Milwaukee at Kedzie!

It's a big one! Someone at least has a garbage can on it :)

  • KPG Logan Square resident since 1987

I downloaded your photo and submitted a request/photo via cityofchicago.org as shown on Sergio's link. It's hard to get an exact address, but I got it fairly close by experimenting with different addresses until I hit it (about 3150 W. Logan Blvd.)

This is really the best place to go with pothole/graffiti/etc info as it is put into the system and you can receive texts on your phone when the report is completed "closed". I reported graffiti this week, and the alert came the next day that the graffiti was removed already (and it was....I checked:)

Take out the garbage can and insert Rahm. At least he'd be doing some good for the city in that new position.

Maplewood Park... Safe?

Hello! My wife and I are looking at a property directly across from Maplewood Park and trying to get a feel for the area. We've heard everything from "Fine, but watch your back", to "Hell, no". Currently we live adjacent to where the Cabrini towers used to be, so we definitely have an idea of how one needs to be aware living in the city. Thoughts? Thanks for the help!

  • Thank you once again sir!

  • Andrew, thank you for starting this thread. I realize this hasn't been updated in quite some time. Perhaps you could speak to recent developments within the area. Thank you in advance for your help! My wife and I are looking to move to the area and would appreciate any feedback. Thank you!

Just wanted to let the neighbors know that my good friend and I are opening a clothing store in the neighborhood very soon. We're planning to open our doors mid-September. Hey everyone,
Just wanted to let the neighbors know that my good friend and I are opening a clothing store in the neighborhood very soon. We're planning to open our doors mid-September. The store is called Rocky and Luella and we'll have men's and women's apparel as well as some accessories, bags, etc. We're really excited about bringing some retail to Logan and hopefully everyone in the area enjoys it.

For the past month we've been collecting some additional contributions for the store opening. We're just a two-person operation so we don't have any huge investors behind us and every little donation helps.

There's about 48 hours left to donate if anyone is interested in supporting us :)

One of the perks is an invite to the opening party, which should be a lot of fun!

  • Soo

I am looking for garage space for one car near Paulina and Pearson.

    Thank-You!

  • Just wanted to let you all know that we're open now, so come say hello :) 3207 W. Fullerton at Kedzie
