Red light camera, diversy and California

Has anyone gotten a 100$ ticket here before? Turning left in the morning onto California is hard because it backs way up waiting to get on 94.

The pictures make it look like I was stopped at the line and the. Blew the red light, but it was yellow when I was in the turn lane changed to red as I was crossing the line

I want to contest not sure if I have any chance

  • Good luck trying to contest it. Your tire has to over the white line b/4 it turns yellow. I have heard that yellow lights are suppose to be 6 seconds long but Chicago has most at 4 seconds and it's a constitutional issue. It does make you slam on your brakes and stop after getting one if these ridiculous tickets. Without benefit of counsel good luck.

I beat a red light ticket I got at that very intersection a couple of years ago. Long story, but the light was red .03 seconds when I crossed. It had just snowed, and the pavement was wet. All my arguments about not wanting to hit the brakes hard and possibly skid into the intersection and the yellow light seemed "short" went nowhere.
BUT!!! I looked up various ordinances and here is what I found. Chicago Municipal code 9-102-030 says that one of the elements required on the violation is the MAKE of the car. Here's what's required by that ordinance:
    2) The notice must include:
    b) the vehicle MAKE, if available and readily discernible (this was OTHR on my notice. But by the photo, you could clearly see the make of the car.),

Most of the above is boilerplate notification and present on every notice. However, on my notice, the MAKE was listed as OTHR. In my defense I showed my vehicle registration slip that the MAKE was available from the Sec. of State, and in photo #3 of the violation, the trademark and model of my car was clearly visible and so discernible.

Let me tell you, the administrative officer was VERY surprised, and looked up the ordinance himself. Then he had to agree. I was pretty happy.

The administrative hearing officer's official finding was: the violation does not contain all the required information as set forth in the ordinance. Consequently, you are not responsible for the fine."

So get the ordinence, print it out, and CAREFULLY CHECK the variable information on your ticket, and if there is an error bring proof to show the correct information. And STOP ON THE YELLOW!

P.S. By the way, the same is true for parking tickets...the MAKE of the car is REQUIRED in EVERY CASE. If missing the ticket is invalid.

New businesses coming to Milwaukee between Spaulding and Kimball/Diversey?!

Walking to the Blue Line in the mornings I've noticed a lot of heavy work going on at the long building 2760 - 2774 N Milwaukee (from a couple doors north of Spaulding up to the Gap building). I also noticed one of the thrift shops there has a "moving sale" sign. So I was curious and looked up the permit:

I've been waiting for some fresh activity in this building! It has so much potential but is currently mostly empty. And I don't mind a good thrift/value store, but there were 4-5 in a row there. Also, I can't stand how the one shop always has all those rows of waste-down mannequins with ugly tight pants on.

Here's hoping the owner has luck filling the spaces with valuable businesses and happy residents! If anyone has any information about what might be going in there. please share.

  • I was thinking baggy shorts & $175 sandals.

  • Glad to see something happening with that building!! The row of mannequin bottoms gives our 'hood character 😁 (although I will be happy to see them gone)

Bike repair

I'm looking for a place to repair my old, gnarly bike. Who do you guys rely on?

  • Lindsey Albany Ave. resident

Comrade cycles! They have experience working on every kind of bike. It's the only place I go to get my bikes worked on. 1908 W. Chicago Ave.

  • I'll second S.T. on the West Town Bikes recommendation if you want to get to know your bike and get your hands dirty. If not, I've had the best luck with Smart Bike Parts on Armitage. They do a great job at a reasonable price and are respectful of all types of bikers. I've also heard them flat out tell people that the junker they brought in isn't worth the cost of repairing and then explain why, except as a real stop-gap measure.

Problem with newspapers and ads on porch

Our building, a 6 flat at Campbell and Palmer, has a huge issue with unwanted circulars, newspapers, and ads being delivered to our porch daily. There are 7 copies of some of these dropped every single day. We're a rental building so ownership of the porch is tricky, though my husband and I try our best to clean it off when we can. Does anyone know what we can do to stop this wasteful madness? It's such a waste of everyone's time and I hate to think of all that discarded paper.

  • Chicago Al Lifelong Chicagoan, documentarian, & time-traveler

Here's the link to the story we did at cbs regarding this very issue. I haven't seen any of these papers for a while and I'm glad this story and particularly the class action made a difference.

Electronic Billboards

Hi All-- Another electronic billboard went up this week at Armitage and Milwaukee. Everywhere they go up they dominate the intersection and make it look like a prison yard. The big ones on the highway wash out everything...Has this been an issue for anyone else? Is there a way to prevent the Las Vegas-ization of Chicago? At the least I'd like to see some kind of brightness limits on them. Has anyone started a campaign? Is it all futile?

I've lived in east Logan/west Bucktown for the past six years and am reasonably comfortable with our level of safety (despite being mugged at once, on a street I considered quite safe and much nicer than our own). Any ideas about the safety over there? I definitely take all the precautions -- no earphones, no walking alone at night, no alleys, etc, and know that stuff happens everywhere, but we do have a kid now and I worry a little more about gang and safety issues (which have been quite minor where we are now). I have read some stuff about logan square crime actually being on the rise .. Any thoughts on this? Thanks!

  • We're on Drake and Wrightwood, a couple blocks from the area you mention and walk everyday with our 2 and 4 year olds to Unity, never any issues. Foreclosed/shady-looking houses keep getting bought and renovated so hopefully things keep getting better. It's a fantastic area for young parents. That said, obviously be smart about your surroundings

  • I'm further west off Central Park and have had no issues. Sounds like you know what precautions to take. Also try attending a CAPs meeting to better understand the issues in the neighborhood. I agree with the others said above many of the abandoned homes are being bought and i see new regulars at the bus stop every couple of weeks. The business are just slow in moving our way.

I was walking the other day and ran into this guy locking the door on the former Ecuanet/Honey I Forgot The Milk. I asked him if he was going to open a business there and he told me he just bought the building with his family and is going to restore it and have office or apartments upstairs and is hoping to rent the ground floor to a restaurant that will use both sides storefronts together. He seemed really nice and told me the car wash that was for sale for a long time on California was sold for cash to a developer and he was told a new building will be built there.

Addison St. on the Northwest Side. Work on the 7,700-square-foot restaurant will begin this summer, with an estimated cost of $1.2 million, according to BidClerk.com. Radiators

Does anyone know where I could find old cast iron radiators? I'm looking for a small one to replace a monster radiator (see photo) I have in my kitchen which probably has been there for over 50 years doing a swell job but taking a lot of room.

  • You can also try Consumers plumbing, http://www.consumersplumbing.com/heating-usedradiators/ for used radiators. I needed to buy new radiators and got them from Castrads, https://www.castrads.com. They are in the UK but I got them in two weeks and they are awesome. I needed four of them in multiple sizes. In the end it cost me $4,500 US dollars, shipping included, as compared to a US company that quoted me $23,000 for similar radiators.

  • Absolutely consumer supply on lake street.....they will even buy your old one. Ours cost 100$. The best part is they test them for leaks.....and they have a very large selection so you may be able to match your exiting design.

For keeping up such an eyesore, how does the city and our fine alderman moreno reward them? Gives them permits for a two sided digital billboard so they can milk some more money out of the he property. Can we add some more illegal billboards to the house next door to make it the trifecta of bad neighbors?

Mr. ZJ's

Went into this bar the other night at the corner of Central Park & Oakdale. 10 minutes after getting there, people started barring the back exit with wood planks, then locked the front door. Some of the clientele started getting really tense feeling and one guy was punching the jukebox and screaming. I got them to unlock the front door for me so I could leave. What are the Avondale local dives that I should avoid? I'm all about a no frills bar, but Mr. ZJs seemed pretty unsafe.

  • That's not just seems unsafe. That IS unsafe. What if a fire broke out & the exits were blocked? It's up to you, but you may want to alert the city about that (not that it might do any good). But what they're doing is illegal.

  • Took me a minute to realize this is the "Podhale." I used to live across the street and have been there, it is terrible. Had a friend witness a stabbing there.

Go next door to the Podlasie. It's a Polka bar and every time I've been there it's been very welcoming and friendly. I would also recommend the Bialystock on Diversey. Great karaoke spot on Saturday nights.

Our neighbor, who is a very nice person, just informed me that some other people on the block have complained that our patch of grass near the curb (I believe it's called a parkway) has a bunch of brown spots from dog pee. She admitted that she thinks it looks bad, too. Our dog doesn't use the patch, but our tenants upstairs let their dogs use it and people walking their dogs will let them go there. She said that you can get fined by the city for this, which sounds absurd. Is this true? I guess my husband and I are in the minority, I keep a well manicured small front garden but don't really care much about the parkway other than keeping it mowed. We both work a lot and I'd rather focus on my back yard and garden. I guess my question is; how much should I care about what the neighbors say, and can you be fined? And I'd be willing to ask our tenants to go across the street to the park, but how am I supposed to keep other dogs from peeing there when I'm gone most of the day? She keeps people off of hers because she's home most of the day and can see when someone is outside.

Full disclosure: that same neighbor's husband mows our parkway for us. We have never asked him to do it and he just does it because he's a nice guy and he knows we only have a push mower. We have thanked him many times. So I'm not sure if there's a sense of entitlement going on there since they maintain it? We would be happy to mow it ourselves. They have lived here a long time and are very particular.

If we put up a fence, then that makes the grass much harder to mow, so then that would involve pulling up the grass and putting something else there which I don't have the desire to to. Also, I've heard that this patch is technically property of the city and could be torn up if they need to access a water main, etc. Any advice is appreciated!

That is gross and rude. agree that dogs will go where they will go but this neighbor pulls her dogs in front of the gate to make them go there and laughs. If she were civil she would pull them away from the front gate. I would never let my dogs do that and I would expect others not to do the same regardless if it is city sidewalk or our property. Something scary is that they both have professional job. They are acting like children.

  • You're totally right Confused, those people are ridiculous. I don't think dogs should go on sidewalks unless that's the only option. That's where everyone walks, no one should have to walk around rivers of pee, especially right in front of their gate.

Last time I was able to find a spot on Armitage, this time I'm in an area that isn't being used. Ridiculous amount of trash on my block.

I've noticed a ridiculous amount of trash on my block near Palmer and Kimball. In the grass, as well as the street. It really detracts from the area. Seems to be more right here than any other block in the neighborhood. Not sure, why, maybe it is due to the close proximity to a main thoroughfare, and bus stop? I'm going to start picking as much up as I can, and am hoping others will all contribute to keeping Logan Square beautiful. Everyone please do your part! Also are there any volunteer groups in the neighborhood that help pick up trash?

Eventually 10 years ago, Walgreens bought that corner and forced Kimball Pharmacy out. The storefront has been empty ever since. I am no fan of pawn shops, but I am glad a business is moving. The corner had been extremely dirty and run down for almost 10 years.

  • censorship |ˈsensərˌSHip|
    noun
the practice of officially examining books, movies, etc., and suppressing unacceptable parts

Who decides if someone is not entitled to watch this (as you suggest) or that it has or doesn't any value? The government? That seems like censorship to me. That you don't think it has value does not mean it objectively has no value to anyone. I don't understand why "don't watch it" is not an acceptable solution?

Thanks for the video Bart. Crazy stuff.

but not once did I actually complain about the video itself, say I wouldn't watch it or demand that it be removed. I would never intend to tell people what to watch or not watch. I objected to the demand or assumption that dozens of additional tapes of footage would or should be released (leaked), or that there would be any point if there were. that's really all, but I understand -- it's more exciting to cry censorship or whatever just to get people fired up.

El Habanero - 3300 W. Fullerton

A great little Mexican gem just opened at the corner of Fullerton and Spaulding, where Gloria's once was.

Without getting too yelpy - chips were perfectly greasy; burrito and horchata were choice. Veggie friendly, and even the refried beans are offered without the traditional lard (though you wouldn't know it by the taste). Enrique, the owner, and his family were lovely. ¡Ándale!

Avoid the Blue Line this morning

A man fell on the tracks at California this morning and the stop is shut down in the meantime.

  • Thanks for the info Buster, I've been thinking of him all day wondering how he's doing. I'm not a twitter user so if you hear anything more, please send me a private message. Sorry you had to witness it too; was not a good start to the day.

  • I saw this post and just so happened to be standing next to a cta crew. They didn't know about and called it in to check. They were told the camera showed a guy with a large backpack slide while he was run in for the train. The momentum from...

I saw this post and just so happened to be standing next to a cta crew. They didn't know about and called it in to check. They were told the camera showed a guy with a large backpack slide while he was run in for the train. The momentum from his bag threw him on the tracks and he touched the third rail. He was saved and conscious when he was taken away. I thought you die when you touch the third rail and the cta guy said not always, but it messes with your heart and you need a checkup occasionally.

TMobile in Logan Square

I'm thinking about switching from AT&T to TMobile (their offer to pay for contract cancellation fees is appealing!). I've found AT&T's coverage pretty decent (not great), and I certainly would not make the switch if TMobile's is worse in the Logan Square area (or, really, anywhere in the city). Any thoughts here? Much appreciated!

  • BTD

I switched from att to tmobile. Their store is one block from me. I could not get signal in my home. Then I found out that if you bring your own phone the costs are the same. Tmobile if iffy at best and I have had zero issues with att

  • I switched from AT&T to T-Mobile about five years ago. It was a great move. Reception is night and day.

Need to hire laborer and truck

Hi neighbors, I bought a bed at Sears but need some help getting it home. Happy to negotiate reasonable price for you to go to Sears with me (preferably Saturday or Sunday, but am flexible) and your truck, drive it back to my apartment, and help me unload into my apartment and take down my old mattress and box spring (which is yours, if you want it!).

Filthy garden @ Armitage/Richmond

Does anyone have contact info for the garden at the se corner of Armitage and Richmond? The sidewalk outside of the garden is overgrown and covered with trash (including a spare tire). Before I call the Alderman I want to give them a chance to clean up.

Thanks!

Garbage Pick-up not happening

Anyone else in the Logan Square/Bucktown/Humboldt Park area having issues with their garbage pick up? Ours hasn't been picked up in a month and the bins are overflowing (with mostly stuff other people have put in it since it's in an alley and not our own waste). I put in a request on 311 to have them come and they texted that it had been completed, but they definitely didn't come get the garbage. People are starting to leave nasty notes by our bins but I can't make the garbage truck come. I also can't find a schedule for the garbage pick-up; just the recycling schedule is online. Anyone know about this, too? Thanks!

  • PR

Take a photo and send it to your alderman. They should be able to help you out.

  • Alya A. Bucktown to Logan

Service has also been irregular because on snowy days they commandeer garbage trucks to do snow plow/removal duty. But in all cases our garbage has been picked up just a day late. Agree get your alderman's office involved.

Blue Line Back to Normal

I was standing on a southbound Blue Line train about 7:30 this morning at the Logan Square stop when we heard that we would be "standing for an indefinite period because of electrical problems on the track ahead." The conductor then came on and told us we'd be better off taking the bus to the California stop, as he didn't know how long it'd be. Not thinking, I did. And of course several trains passed just before we were able...

The conductor then came on and told us we'd be better off taking the bus to the California stop, as he didn't know how long it'd be. Not thinking, I did. And of course several trains passed just before we were able to get to the stop. <Sigh> Why did I (nor the 100s of other people who followes suit) not even consider that any southbound trains we'd catch at California would have to make it from Logan Square? #needmycoffee

At least the situation is cleared up now, but it sounded pretty bad: http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-person-seriously-hurt-after-falling-onto-cta-tracks-20140327,0,5737440.story
