Will there be an aldermanic debate at Wildwood School for the 2015 election?

Four years ago there were two aldermanic debates at Wildwood School at which the community, voters and taxpayers had no voice in questioning the candidates and were thereby censured from the debate to determine who would have the best leadership for the 41st Ward with the questions that were of their concern.

Does anyone out there in Everyblock land know how to help me to prevent censorship from reoccurring at the 2015 aldermanic debate?

My suggestion would be to have a questionnaire form, place the questions in a bucket, shake the bucket and pull out the questions.

What questions would you like to ask?

North Edgebrook residents express concern about Touhy traffic congestion

Touhy runs along Niles/Chicago border. Village is looking at ideas to help relieve congestion, according to Alderman Marry O'Connor (41st).
http://nadignewspapers.com/2014/11/19/village-studying-how-it-can-cut-touhy-traffic-congestion/

  • Just for the record, if I had Harry Potter’s magic wand I would make both Moody and Melvina cul-de-sacs at the north end immediately south of the allies and make the north half of Hiawatha at Lehigh a half cul-de-sac like the one on Hiawatha at Navajo and Devon. This...

Just for the record, if I had Harry Potter’s magic wand I would make both Moody and Melvina cul-de-sacs at the north end immediately south of the allies and make the north half of Hiawatha at Lehigh a half cul-de-sac like the one on Hiawatha at Navajo and Devon. This would force traffic to go around the North Edgebrook/Wildwood triangle instead of cutting through it (the shortest distance between two points continues to be a straight line) as it does now.

The argument against cul-de-sacs has always been that they also prevent emergency vehicles from entering a street and my counter argument is that I think that some place some where a traffic engineer could design a cul-de-sac barrier that would allow an emergency vehicle to pass through if such a design doesn't already exist some place some where.

The second argument against cul-de-sacs is that they cost a lot of money and my counter argument is that the North Edgebrook /Wildwood triangle pays a lot of money in property taxes so we will be getting back what we already pay in.

  • Addendum: This would also give rise to the opportunity to close Hiawatha between SMOW and Wildwood school during school hours creating a car free campus zone.

“100 Faces of War” - Portraits and words of Americans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. The exhibition will be on view from November 11, 2014 through May 1, 2015 at the National Veterans Art Museum and will be the first time the exhibit will shown in its entirety.

This exhibition is to be a place of open contemplation upon the American experience of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. These portraits represent a cross section of the American experience of these wars and the statements of the people pictured reveal a candid, unedited understanding of our recent history. Nine years in the making, 100 Faces was created by Artist Matt Mitchell. Each portrait represents a part of the American statistics of these wars and comes out of a personal meeting between the artist and the person pictured. For posthumous portraits the artist worked with the family and the words are provided by the family.

Opening Reception, Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11, 2014, from 3pm -7pm. The opening reception is free and open to the public.

Why can't the 41st Ward do this?: "How Would You Spend $1 Million in Our Community?"

How Would You Spend $1 Million in Our Community?

How Would You Spend $1 Million in Our Community?
For the third year, the 45th Ward is using participatory budgeting to determine how to spend 2015 Aldermanic Menu funds.
This process offers transparency into how the city spends your tax dollars and gives you a real voice – by offering ideas and voting for specific projects – into how that money is spent in our community.
Here’s how it works: Each alderman every year is allocated $1.3 million in Aldermanic Menu funds to spend on street and sidewalk repaving, curb replacement, bike lanes, street light replacement, and other capital projects. In most wards, this money is allocated by the alderman, with varying degrees of input from city departments, staff and residents.
The PB process starts in the fall with neighborhood assemblies. There, we explain the process and brainstorm infrastructure projects.
The projects suggested are sent to committees made up of volunteers. Those volunteers in the fall and winter research the projects for feasibility and cost. They then select projects to place on the ballot.
In the spring, the committees present the projects selected for the ballot to the community at project expos, explaining why those projects were selected and answering questions.
Finally, in the late spring, all ward residents 14 and older are invited to vote on projects. Residents will also vote on how much of the $1 million we’re allocating through this process should be spent on streets, sidewalks and curbs.
The 45th Ward will announce the results at the same weekend as voting, and the projects will be submitted to the city for funding.
