This is a reminder that our first workshop starts Wednesday, October 1, 2014, at BUILD, Inc., located at 5100 West Harrison Street. The workshop will go from 10:00 am-11:30 am. We will help you avoid common mistakes made by even some of the more established organizations by providing an overview of the responsibilities of nonprofits in recordkeeping and reporting. We will also examine how this information may be used by funders, the community and Guidestar. When you complete this session you will have a better understanding of how to use publicly available information to better position your organization in the philanthropic marketplace. Workshops are $25.00 each in advance and $35.00 each at the door. A $100.00 investment can literally save your organization thousands of dollars on the back end.

  • Valerie F. Leonard Lawndale Community Builder and Policy Analyst

Those of you who run nonprofits and are politically engaged could particularly benefit from the first workshop. Not only will we discuss record keeping, but we will share what activities are allowed and not allowed with respect to lobbying and political education.

Presidential Library

Now that our jewel of Black history and culture, Bronzeville has been eliminated from consideration for the Presidential Library, of the four remaining contenders, North Lawndale is the only one born and developed by the community.
North Lawndale, as a community, developed its own bid and then established a partnership with the world renowned University of Illinois.
There are “North Lawndales” across this country, from Hawaii to New York. In this contest, we represent them all.
What can you do to spread the word?

Smart Meters

Recently I have had an installation of a Smart meter and while I was waiting to do a cost comparison I figured I would reach out to my neighbors to see if they had done some of this analysis on their electric bills already? I also wanted to see if there were any concerns related or incidents as early installation of these meters were known to cause fires, fines were threatened if refused, and billing issues had been shown to appear in other states.
