Looking for a Veterinary Clinic

Good Morning,
I am a new pet parent of a cat. Just starting to looking around for vets. The closest to me is "Higgins Animal Clinic" I was wondering what do you think? Thank you so much for your help!

  • I highly recommend http://www.northcenteranimalhospital.com
They have been nothing short of amazing.

  • Patricia 25 Year Lakeview Resident

The Cat Hospital can be a little pricey, but they're honest and don't run unnecessary tests. Their vets are very skillful and compassionate. With our cats, they've managed to diagnose and treat conditions that other vets couldn't figure out. I like that they are an all-cat practice. Having said that, I've also heard good things about North Center Animal Hospital

Spaniel Mix Looking for a New Home

Spaniel mix girl. 2 years old and very friendly needs a new home our new place doesn't accept pets. She has a bed, metal crate, leash toys. If anyone is interested in taking her in let me know. We adopted her 2 years ago as a pup and does have a chip inside her so I would have to let the shelter know new owners information. Thank you!

  • Saffron Applescotch Known to get a bit frisky after too much tea

Such a cutie. Good luck find a home.

  • You guys are being really mean and elitist. Maybe that was the only place in her price range in that neighborhood so her child doesn't have to change schools. You don't know the story, stop being so awful. I'm a single mom and if I had to move to a place for my kid that didn't accept pets, I would. And I love my pet.

Dr. Olivia Forys

I got a letter saying that my GP, Dr. Olivia Forys, is leaving her practice with Rush. I'd really like to keep her as my doctor, but the letter didn't say where she is going (if anywhere in Chicago). If anyone has information, it would be much appreciated. I certainly hope she's doing OK.

  • robin in WRP Tired, very tired

Her contract probably prevents her from sharing this information. I would wait a couple of months, then check HealthGrades for updated office informaion

Homemade Pizza Company closed all locations

RIP #HomemadePizzaCo. Looks like all locations are closed, and their Facebook and Twitter are deleted. This is an L3 building so we'll see what happens next.

http://southportcorridorchicago.blogspot.com/2014/05/rip-homemade-pizza-company.html

  • Matt 10-year Lakeview resident

They must have left some food behind because the Southport storefront is now littered with dead flies...such an eyesore, creeps me out each time I walk past it on my commute. Shocked that the chain closed, they must have overexpanded--this location had a line of customers every evening.

  • Personally, I never understood the business model. I bought pizzas from them twice and stopped after I realized I could get a pizza made, and delivered to me for the same price as this place. Did I mention that the delivered pizza was already made? I didn't have to cook it myself.

I found them to be overpriced for what they were offering.

It doesn't open easily so he tries to pop it open by leaning his body into it.
I yell "hey." He looks around then resumes attempt. I yell "Get out of here." He sees me and then takes off running westbound down alley. Called 911, operator was great, and they put some cops on it. Never saw where the Caucasian male went.

The brazen, daylight event during the midst of commuters going back and forth from garages was pretty remarkable. Keep your heads up!

  • On Monday, July 15 at 10 a.m. I observed two males of a similar description on bikes southbound in the alley between Southport and Greenview, north of Irving Park, and then on Cuyler. Their demeanor was off. They were riding slowly and looking at back gates and into back yards. One looked on one side of the alley and the other looked at the other side. I saw their faces too fast to notice more. Police responded, but did not find the riders.

  • Jim, my partner saw these guys on the 700 block of Melrose at around 9:30pm the same day you saw them. She said they were acting strangely and looked like they were casing houses. I told her to call the cops next time.

  • jim

The guys I saw did seem a bit "out of it" and weren't exactly subtle in their approach. Good idea to always call the police. Agreed.

Looking for Auto Mechanic

I need to have my transmission fluid flushed. Looking for a *trustworthy* mechanic. Any recommendations? Thanks.

  • ReNae just a resident

I agree with Craig Tucker. I took my car there and was very happy with the work there.

  • Agree with all the recs for Ashland Tire and Auto. Best guys around! My car crapped out so I'm car-less these days, but I had my piece-of-junk car in there all the time. Totally trust them and never felt like I was being scammed for repairs that weren't needed. I miss them! :)

LV2 Parking For Wrigley Concerts

And we're about to hit another round of concerts this weekend at Wrigley and yet again expect to have our aldermen do nothing about parking enforcement for the LV2 area yet again.

Please notify your alderman if you see any violations:
Pawar - bill@chicago47.org or info@chicago47.org 773-868-4747 https://twitter.com/Alderman_Pawar
Capelman - Info@james46.org 773-878-4646 https://twitter.com/JamesCappleman
Waguespack - info@ward32.org 773-248-1330 https://twitter.com/ward32chicago

Tunney (who doesn't really care for many reasons) ward44@cityofchicago.org 773.525.6034 https://twitter.com/AldTomTunney

Let them know that ordinance O2013-846 needs to be passed!

  • MayorOf47 W. Lakeview/Roscoe Village

And the Cubs themselves of course.
    Game day hotline: 866-4-CPD-TOW
To contact the Cubs about community concerns at other times: 773-404-4175.

  • If you take a look at the night game amendment ordinance SO2013-4079 (https://chicago.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=F&ID=2531900&GUID=8C948AD7-5029-4072-B78B-D02543AFDB4C), specifically paragraph 8 subsection d, you will see that the Cubs, in this case, are required to abide by the provisions of the neighborhood protections passed in City Council in 2004 (http://docs.chicityclerk.com/journal/2004/feb11_2004/feb11_2004_part3optimize.pdf) and subsequently in 2013 whenever...

Those provisions involve, amongst other things, the LV2 parking program.

Although the ordinance you cite above did not pass City Council, the intent of the ordinance was incorporated into the new night baseball game ordinance. Therefore, LV2 is in force during concert events at Wrigley Field attracting more than 12,500 visitors. You may also notice that this year that the LV2 double yellow signs that list the game dates around the LV2 neighborhoods also read 'Concerts TBD.'

LV2 should be enforced during the concerts on July 18th and 19th this year. No further legislation is necessary to make this happen.

  • MayorOf47 W. Lakeview/Roscoe Village

Thanks Jimbo. I've read it in depth and have communicated with Pawar's office my frustration that the Cubs do nothing to enforce it for the last few years - and Schulter before that.
The signs are there, they're just ignored by parking enforcement and the Cubs as they were last year when they first included the concert wording.

I find it frustrating that on the Cubs community newsletter they state:
"Parking Restrictions for the Show Days:
Irving Park Road from Ashland Avenue to Clark Street
Clark Street from Irving Park Road to Roscoe Street
Racine Avenue (East Side) from Patterson Avenue to Addison Street
Addison Street from Ashland Avenue to Clark Street "
It neglects to state that ANY neighborhood parking restrictions are in effect for those dates.

Regardless, contact your alderman and the Cubs hotline if you have any problems in your neighborhood.

"broken computer" phone scam ?

I have been receiving calls on my land line from people claiming to be from "Windows" and "Microsoft", a very heavy Indian accent. I was told there is a problem with my computer, told the caller that I did not have one, and she insisted that there were something wrong with my computer. I hung up. I have the feeling this is a scam that are tricking people into giving up personal information or something of the like. Last evening around 8:45pm, a man "Jacob" called he said "your computer is broken and it is breaking the internet" This time I spoke in polish and he hung up. Has anyone else been receiving similar calls?

  • icepackmac NorthCenter, St.Ben's,Lakeview & Lincoln Square Li

    obviously too many people "fall" for it & so many are intimidated and bullied into it I agree with Verena plus the callers are so well "trained" and/or are sociopathic & listen to their "marks" voice/tone;

  • Ann in Lakeview 30+ years in Lakeview

Thank you all for your comments. I am one senior who will not fall victim to those scammers. I received another one of those phone calls from a "Joe" who also had a heavy accent. I told the scammer to "go jump in a lake" and he hung up.

Wanted: Flat Screen TV Packaging

My 24” flat screen TV stopped working and the manufacturer has asked me to mail it back to them. I don’t have the original packaging. Does anyone happen to have packaging for a twenty-something inch TV that they want to get rid of? I’d be happy to pick-up.

I checked on Freecycle, but couldn't find anything.

Thank you!

  • I worked at the ups store for years. Make sure you leave 2 - 3 inches of space between the TV and box for peanuts. Bubble wrap it nice and tight. 2-3 layers. Would charge about $25 to pack . good luck!

  • Mike Spikes Rogers Park Newbie

Glad to help Jane -- but I'd warn you, check out the folks at the UPS store. My office shipped a bunch of stuff to me VIA UPS freight and a few of the items that I did not pack myself wound up arriving broken. Insure your shipment, and if you've got a feeling that the store associates are kind of lackadaisical in their manner, go elsewhere.

Lake View High School - put it on your radar

Amazing things are happening at LVHS. Reminds me of some of the neighborhood feeder K-8 schools a few years back, hidden in plain sight and on the verge of becoming primary options. The new principal, Scott Grens, is asking parents to sign up for the mail list, so he can communicate directly with the community. I've spent a lot of time with him in the last few months - he's the real deal, and this place is going to be the Blaine/Nettelhorst/Bell/etc of the HS world in no time. Take a few seconds and sign up below....http://eepurl.com/YSGLf

  • I was at the Grow Lake View meeting last week at Ald. Pawar's office, which had a great turnout. As the parent of a preschooler, it's efforts like this that reinforce my optimism about high school options.

  • Brad Zerman Council member Graceland West Community Associa...

Scott Grens spoke to our community meeting last night. His enthusiasm and commitment was impressive. There will be a lot of new ways the high school and community can partner. Let's take advantage of the opportunity to help Scott and his students in a variety of ways.

I found a wallet this morning on Racine at Belmont. There is identification but no contact information. I'm trying to get a hold of the owner to no avail.

If it could be you, let me know!

Reaching her on LinkedIn, Facebook and stalking her employer have failed. If you have any other suggestions, please let me know. I want to return it to its owner.

Where are the fumes coming from?

In the 3-odd years I've lived in Lake View, I've noticed fumes coming through the window in the early morning hours. Last night, it happened around 4am. The smell is definitely something industrial, but not necessarily normal car exhaust. Seems more like a factory smell.

Definitely doesn't smell healthy and often wakes me up until I close the windows.

Anybody every smelled this before or have any idea what it is?

  • Where in Lakeview are you? Paulina between Diversey and Wrightwood used to be all factories before the houses were built. One used to make plastic pellets or something like that. You used to see them on the ground when you walked by. Anyway, sometimes when I walk over there I can still smell the plastic in the air.

  • We're about a block from the lake...I've always wondered if it's some vapor floating up from the refineries (or whatever they are) on the Indiana side of the Lake. No evidence, but it smells like something like that.

Was at my kids' T-ball practice at Waveland Park and noticed a guy crouching and hidden below / behind the berm around the field, pointing his camera up at a young girl that was standing and watching the practice. I stared at him for a while to make sure I was seeing what I was actually seeing -- he continued on for a few minutes. No, he was in no way related to any of the families. He kept his camera on the kid until a woman jogged by, at which point he followed the woman with his camera and then noticed me staring at him. Didn't take my eyes off him, which scared him off. He smiled and waved enthusiastically at me and then slunk off behind the tennis courts.
Does anybody know if there are cops that patrol the bike paths regularly, and whether it would make a difference to give them a description? (How to do this?)
A reminder to parents, keep your eyes open at the playgrounds and parks. Look over your shoulders. This guy, in particular: Tall, lanky, caucasian, late 40s or 50s, white-blond or white hair, prominent nose and fair (reddened) skin. Wielding a camera or lingering near the kids' practice fields and playgrounds.

  • Call the cops next time ASAP.

  • What No yolk wrote. If you really thought that something nefarious was going on, then you should have called the police or done something more than stare at the guy. That might work for shoplifters in department stores, but I'd bet that a "Park perv" would not be bothered too much. After all, he is conspicuously positioning himself with a camera. You saw him, right?
