Riot Fest Clean Up

Humboldt Blvd is still blocked between North Ave and Division
There are also lane restrictions on North, Division, Kedzie, and California around Humboldt Park... There are hundred of gulls feeding on garbage, there are still porta-potties everywhere ...Stilll lots to do. The streets should reopen later today, if we are lucky, at least that is the plan.

Looking to meet new mom's!

Hello! I am a new mom and will be staying at home with my baby through next August. I would love to meet a couple other new moms for daytime socializing, learning how to get out of the house, sharing stories and ideas, meeting for short walks, etc...I joined Meet Up, but thought I might give this a try, too. Feel free to message me if you are interested in getting together one day in the coming weeks, even just for an hour. Thanks!

How to avoid parking my car on a street cleaning day while I'm on vacay?

I wonder if you guys have a solution to this. I park my car on the streets in Logan Square where no permit is needed. I'll be going out of town for ten days and am afraid that during one of those days they may put up "no parking" signs for cars to be moved during street cleaning days. I don't want my car towed while I'm out of town and unable to move my car.

You might suggest that I have a friend move it but I just moved here and don't know many people yet who would be willing to do that for me. So I need a different solution.

Does anyone have thoughts on this?

  • WindyCityJones Actor, landlord, proud Chicagoan!

I've read that if there's a street cleaning while you're on vacation you can show your flight itinerary and contest it. The whole "must move your car every seven days" is crazy but luckily not enforced in my neighborhood. There are lots of weeks that go by where I don't drive my car. That's why we have public transit. ;)

  • I've used the website Shannon posted (http://www.chicagostreetcleaning.com/) for my last several vacations to avoid parking where they will be doing street cleaning. I have found it to be accurate and have avoided tickets. Definitely recommend it!

Where to take Calligraphy classes?

Does anyone know of a place that offers Calligraphy classes? I went to the library and checked out a book but I prefer to learn in a class environment. I also check with the city colleges of Chicago and nothing.

Thanks,

  • Fantastic. In the middle of last century Chicago was the center of calligraphy and lettering in the country, something history has forgotten.

Check out the Chicago Calligraphy Collective: http://chicagocalligraphy.org
They offer classes and workshops. Keep an eye out for events so you can meet other calligraphy nerds.

  • Thanks Jackdaws will keep an eye on it.

Buying commercial real estate?

Does anyone have experience with, or can refer me to someone who has, buying commercial real estate? My business is losing its lease in a few years, and I'm considering buying something with maybe an apartment attached? It's very difficult for us to find space because we have pretty unique space requirements, so I'd rather not have to worry about leases ending ever again.

I know the rules for commercial are different from residential, so I'd love to just casually get some info without any pressure. Or, if you have experience, you can post your story here...

Thanks, everyone!

Commercial is very different and took a a big hit in terms of financing availability with the downturn in real estate. It has recovered somewhat, but you should assume you will be making a big down payment (25-35%) and have to go through a lot of extra hoops such as an environmental inspection. You will also probably have to go with a Balloon mortgage, which requires you to refinance after a 3-7 year term, which is fine if everything is going well with you financially and with the real estate market as well, but sucks if you or the market is in a downturn. If you currently own residential property and have equity, you might be able to borrow against your residential to partially finance your commercial purchase. With your current business you might also be able to finance your purchase with a SBA loan and get more favorable terms.
Commercial is also taxed at a much higher rate, so be prepared to pay a lot of taxes.
The good news is that if you are flexible about location you can find some really good deals in some areas. The "hot areas" are going to be expensive.

  • meanboss I own a circus.

Thanks, Kathy. Would you be available to meet with me to discuss this more in depth?

I basically want someone to help me go through all the clothes I currently own, pick out which clothes to keep, sell or donate the ones I get rid of, and then figure out what key pieces I should buy to create a basic palette that I can use throughout the winter. Then, I'll probably want someone to do the same in the spring. Ideally, I'd love to find someone willing to do the work for cheap or free, and then we can split the money from any clothes I sell. I found one person who provides this service in Chicago, but she charges a minimum of $200 for just a couple hours of work, and that's out of my budget range.

  • Hi Kate, I'm a professional organizer and I partner with a wardrobe/closet consultant. Although I could help you pare down, and create seasonal containers, my friend Alyssa could help you with the capsule wardrobe creation. Call Alyssa Peterson of Cashmere & Wit. 312-613-0922, cashmereandwit.com. The closets in Chicago homes can be so small!!! best of luck in your project!

Hard to believe

Such mixed feelings on how the neighborhoods changed.
At Sawyer and Wrightwood. Apparently this 20-year-old white girl has called the cops because someone hit her bumper. Two scratches maybe.

  • Nobody likes crime, its just a shame that its never a serious issue until gentrifiers move in.

  • I notice fewer POS gang losers around. Maybe some figured out that a meaningful life is when you contribute, not degrade, society. Wishful/naive thinking, I know.

I live in a three flat in Logan/Avondale and my landlord speaks very little English. He lives in the building and has made it a point to enter my apartment without warning, once I was in the shower and heard a knock on my bathroom door. I freaked out when I heard his voice, got out of the shower, and he was still in my apartment. He has walked up to my roommates sliding glass door (before she hung curtains to prevent him from peering in) he would knock and look into her bedroom until she woke up from his knocking. He has made comments to me when I answer my door shortly after returning home from working out, comments such as "you lookin real good!" then proceeds to stare at me until I hide behind my door and slowly close it. Recently, I came home to a shattered lantern, my balcony table and chairs all moved around. I was scared. The next morning, my roommate sent me a text saying "i think you need to come see this." I walked to the back of our apartment, went out on the balcony only to find our landlord and a couple other guys priming our wrought iron balcony, they had removed all of my lights, moved all of our stuff around, and splattered paint on my table and chairs. I told him he needs to give us 24 hours notice before doing any work like this so I can safely move our belongings and that he needs to reimburse me for the lantern his workers destroyed. He laughed it off. I'm not real sure how to handle this? He has my cell phone number and my roommate's cell phone number, he can easily have his daughter (who speaks perfect English) communicate with us to give us a heads up for any future work that needs to be performed. We really love our neighborhood, don't have any other issues other than the rather pressing issue of feeling a bit sexually harassed by our landlord. I hate to use that term but I'm not sure what else to call it? I don't know what to do about the comments made to me and entering our apartment without notice?

Thank you, llitman. I appreciate your feedback. I have actually been looking at available apartments for the past week or so. I'm also working on a letter with the help of a friend who is an attorney to let my landlord know how he has violated our lease, privacy, and safety. I've got all of my emails saved, the emails to my roommate and a couple of friends, explaining the incidents in which he has made us feel uncomfortable so I have the dates and I can recall the specifics of each instance. I still have a hard time wrapping my head around him knocking on my bathroom door while I was in the shower then refraining from leaving my apartment while he knew I was showering. This is the second time I've lived in a building that is also occupied by the owner/landlord and it just never feels like it's my home, I feel like I'm living in someone else's home and simply paying them for it. I've learned my lesson the hard way, I won't live in a landlord or owner occupied building ever again.

  • Kay Lee 10 year resident of UK Village

I'm glad to hear you are being proactive at protecting yourself. I have lived in bad apartment situations and finally found a wonderful place I could call home. It is worth every penny to feel safe in your apartment and find a "home". My sentiments are exactly as litman described.

Anyone tried out Logan Square Fitness yet?

Just wondered what the overall vibe is, if it gets packed at certain hours, etc. Has anyone joined - what do you think?

  • I agree with everyone else, its never very crowded and the guy at the front desk is always really nice. The classes are free too, I've taken the yoga and x-fit class' and both are great, and the instructors are nice too. I only live two blocks away so I've never used the locker rooms, but I don't have any complaints, and its going to get bigger. They're going to open a much larger class area as well.

  • I have been a member for a couple of months and really like the convenience of the location. They offer month-to-month memberships at $39 per month (which is what I'm doing), but you can also sign up for a year at $29 per month OR 3 and 6 month memberships,...

I have been a member for a couple of months and really like the convenience of the location. They offer month-to-month memberships at $39 per month (which is what I'm doing), but you can also sign up for a year at $29 per month OR 3 and 6 month memberships, which they are offering until the end of October (not sure how the price works out for those). I like the month to month option, especially since I had no idea if I would like it/want to stay when I first signed up. I have done a bunch of the regularly scheduled yoga classes, which are good. I have also gone to some early-morning (6:30am) pop-up yoga classes, which were great but only had 2 or 3 people. I hope they add regular morning yoga classes, but I have been told by the guy at the front desk that they are planning to push back evening classes and add additional class times as well (they said Sept. 23rd is the planned date for this, but they are notoriously bad about keeping their promises in terms of dates--see: Grand Opening).

TL;DR Definitely worth it to join, especially if you live very close.

    Hi VP Girl,
This is Ericka from She Sorts Organizing. I'd love to help you out with your goals to downsize and get organized! I do free 20 minute assessments for folks in the neighborhood. I'm happy to stop by. You can PM me or get me at shesorts@gmail.com, or at www.shesorts.com, and we can set up a time.
My advice is, regardless of which company you go with, to make sure that they are properly licensed and insured to come into your home and handle your things. I'm also a member of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO), so I bring a level of ethics, confidentiality, and professional training to ensure you the best experience possible.

Lots of folks can help you go through stuff and arrange it. But a Professional Organizer, trained through NAPO, is uniquely qualified to not only facilitate your decision-making, but to also transfer those organizing skills to you, so you can continue to be happy and organized in your space going forward.

    best,
    Ericka

Physician

Anyone know of a good physician that treats anxiety. My physician left to another state and my therapist is booked until December.

  • robin in WRP misanthrope

Your primary care doctor should be able to refer you to a specialist

  • Tom G Living in Avondale since 1994

Any physician can prescribe anti-anxiety meds for you for the short term and will probably refer you to a psychiatrist, which is the kind of physician that treats anxiety. If you just want a compassionate physician who has dealt with people with anxiety, I will recommend Dr. Paul Abbo. Look him up online. He might even refer you to a therapist who can fill in until yours returns. In any case, keep looking and don't give up. My prayers are with you.

Miyuki is sponsored by Au Pair International where you can view her profile: http://www.aupairint.com/au-pairs-available-now/short-termimmediate-start/1995-miyuki-t.html

Of course we'd be happy to provide her a stellar reference, so feel free to reach out if you'd like to chat!

  • hayek, would love to talk to you about the Au Pair program. Can I message you?

Of course! There should be an email icon in the lower right area of my post as long as you are logged in. Let me know if you don't see it?

One person reached out by email and was curios on how the whole Au Pair thing worked, Figuring others might have similar questions I though I would post my response here, below:

In the US, basically the Au Pair program is done through a combination of the government and an agency who sponsors them. We have placed both of our Au Pairs through AuPairCare and we've been happy with them. Miyuki is through Au Pair International. Both seem like good programs.

In a nutshell the Au Pair program is sorta like an exchange student program where you take a young adult from another country into your family. They can work up to 45 hours a week on child-related tasks only (i.e. they aren’t going to cook or clean for you, just for the children). If you like travel and like experiencing other cultures while sharing your own you'll probably love having an Au Pair, as we have.

Cost wise it is not necessarily cheaper than some alternatives but it does provide awesome flexibility and convenience because the caregiver lives right down hall. You pay somewhere around $6500 up front to the agency which covers travel, training, visas, etc. Then its $200 a week directly to the Au Pair. Big bite up front then its easyier on the pocketbook the rest of the year. Some agencies will help to spread it out though if you want o,

When the time comes to start looking for an Au Pair, let me know. Sometimes our agency runs a referral program where we both get a little break on our costs.

Found Cat. Black/Gray Tabby? With green collar

We found a black/gray cat that followed us into our apartment. It is wearing a green flee collar. If this is your cat please contact me ASAP. I am really allergic and the cat does not seem to enjoy our dog. We will be taking it to treehouse this afternoon unless we can find another place for it to stay.

Thanks

  • After 2 days @ CCAC he will be dead. He is probably an outdoor kitty.

  • You can take him over to Logan Square A H and have them scan him for a chip. They are open on Sunday.

Custom lighting designer in Humboldt Park?

Does anyone know the name of the person--I believe in Humboldt Park--who creates light fixtures? I can't seem to find his info in my feed, but I recall a reference to his work. Thanks much!
