Where to sell used mattresses?

My middle-aged mother is moving to a smaller apartment this weekend and no longer wants, needs, or has space for her queen sized mattress and bed frame. I don't really want to go the craigslist route because waiting for a legit buyer (as opposed to a cashiers check scammer) and then trying to coordinate pick up is more of a hassle than I'm willing to deal with this weekend. I know there are used mattress stores but…? can't seem to find much info on getting rid of them, only buying them. It's a decent quality mattress, about 14 years old, cats and dogs in home. Suggestions?

  • sounds like maybe your mom has gotten all the value out of it and it's ready to be retired.

  • 14 year old mattress with cats and dog in the home. Put it in your alley.

  • Fuarain CTA rider, walker, animal person

eh, it's still in pretty good shape, and I've seen stores selling ones in much worse condition - but maybe they just pull all their stock from next to dumpsters?

Development around Kedzie/Armitage?

Does anyone know what's happening in the building across from Scofflaw (MuveMusic building) on the NW corner of Kedzie and Armitage? My boyfriend received a hint from someone at Scofflaw that "something good" was coming, but no more details were offered. I also wondered if anyone had heard any plans about anything coming into the other vacant buildings on the north side of Armitage in that general area (for example, there are a few vacant storefronts between the cleaners and Walgreens, east of Kedzie)?

Two Towers/Max Gerber Development 2nd Community Meeting

The 2nd Community Meeting for the old Max Gerber Project (The Two Towers), at 2293 N. Milwaukee Ave, will be Monday, March 30th, at the Haas Park Fieldhouse at 6:30 p.m .

The last meeting was packed and was originally proposed to add 253 rental units in the area near the California L station - that's on top of 52 now permitted at 2340 N. California and 120 planned to open in Spring 2016 at 2211 N. Milwaukee.

If 45% or less of households in the area have no cars, the developer would do well to at least provide parking for 50% of the new households, which is what the TOD law provides.

Some comments today from Alderman Moreno's newsletter:

...TOD buildings are taller and have higher unit-counts to allow more people to be able to reside next to public transportation. While some may think that taller and denser buildings are intrinsically bad, there is now wide recognition that TOD's are in fact beneficial to the communities where they are located. Some of the most salient benefits include:
They are environmentally friendly, as carless residents use less energy, create less vehicular congestion and pollute less
Their occupants are pedestrian-friendly and bike-friendly commuters
Their pedestrian-oriented occupants become the customers for local markets, shops and restaurants, creating thriving commercial corridors
Their occupants utilize car-sharing options that are provided
They provide much-needed housing for a generation of individuals that cannot afford or prefer not having a car
They increase the housing supply in a community, thereby lessening supply-demand inflationary pressures In the 1st Ward, they increase the supply of affordable housing units in the community
At sites located by transit stations, the time has arrived for new thinking about urban living and for a moving away from the old paradigm of one-parking space for every dwelling unit.
The 1 st Ward is fortunate to have four transit stations located within it. These stations are a true asset to our community. The stations are also an opportunity to promote progressive, sustainable and widely-beneficial economic development in our community. As your Alderman, I will continue to work with you to ensure that our ward continues to progress and move forward.

If you don't pick up that poop you might get flagged!

This topic has been addressed here ad nauseam, I don't think the offenders are reading Every Block- you know, pick up your dog poop! This afternoon, someone actually flagged a dog poop. I am not sure what to make of it- If you want to see this- take a look, I took a picture. (for some unknown reason, Everyblock pics are not going through)

  • i doubt the signs are going to change the minds of anyone inconsiderate enough to leave piles of dog *$%# lying around. basically just more garbage to deal with when i'm out picking up this week's pile of flaming hot bags :/

  • Bart... Can u send ur picture to the local news so they can do a story about it? While they r gathering information, they may find the person who doesn't pick up after themselves.

Internet service provider in Avondale

I'm moving to Avondale next week and was told RCN doesn't service the area. What alternative providers are there?

  • Allison L. Logan Square Resident

Lived at kimball and Parker a few years ago, AT&T u-verse was available but at the absolute lowest strength/connection speed that they allowed for service. Whatever that means. Can't remember what issues we had with it but I think we eventually switched back to Comcast.

I use Xfinity from Comcast and have been relatively happy with my speed (usually around 50 mbps up and 10 mbps down) and service. I would not be able to get anything near this with AT&T.

As others have mentioned the only annoying part I've experienced with Comcast is having to micromanage my account every 12 months to ensure a consistent rate. Currently I pay just over $100 for their Blast internet and X1 HD DVR with 120+ channels, HBO and Streampix. Honestly I could care less about the television but the way their offers work it was the best option for me.

So this won't be have 'SRO' /single room occupancy zoning. And to me the units are not very MICRO...or cheep. (I think the article might be mixing up the 1000sqft 2 bedroom with the 1500sqft 1 bedroom).

To me this seems like a good fit for a busy corner right by the El. This should help spread the revitalization of Milwaukee Ave further northwest.

  • Yeah there is a huge difference between having the cash and actually affording those apartments. I LOL'd at the part in the article where they suggested these were for the younger millennials... Was I the only one who didn't graduate college debt free with a $60k a year job right off the bat? I'm over 30 and couldn't afford one of these studios. Good grief. I guess I'll show myself out, Logan.

  • Alan.. You're probably wrong.

Personally, I would NEVER pay anything close to that. I mean, my condo is half that and 1.5x the size (lol it's small) of that. But hey, it's not for everyone. Would you rather have this person rent one of these new ones and spend there cash here or take up some of the rental stock that's already dwindling as that's their only option in the area and force someone out of a cheaper apt?

I was told that when a property is sold that the Cook County Recorder does not notify the Cook County Assessor or the Cook County Treasurer. I see just around where I live home owners exemptions are being taken by Developers who have owned the property over year and home owners that rent out their homes. If you look at the Cook County Treasurer site the properties are in the former owner's name and the developer have paid the lower tax because the home owner's exemption is still applied. Also does the assessment show the value of the old homes that have been majorly rehabbed and worth a lot more. How often does someone go out and look at these properties. Or people getting senior exemptions when it's not a single family home and has rental apartments.

Before they raise our property taxes shouldn't there be a more efficient and effective ways of determining what real estate tax is due on each property?. Instead of raising our taxes shouldn't they make sure everyone is paying what they are suppose to pay?

I have tried contacting the media to several stations as an investigation suggestion. I have also put the suggestion on the Cook County site for suggestions. I have also sent this to the Better Government site. There is a lot of loss revenue because of the exemption abuses. We get our taxes raised and cuts are made. You can go to the Cook County Assessors site and see the exemptions on properties around you that shouldn't be taken. I know of at least 4 by my house. I imagine over all of Cook County there would be quite a lot. We need more efficient way of exemptions being applied and recouping the taxes that should have been paid. If the state needs money why don't they look at who's not paying the correct amounts and make them pay. Instead of raising taxes and cutting programs.

Mulch by the truck load

Are there any places nearby that sell mulch by the truck load? Or is there a way to rent a truck (Home Depot) and go get a truckload of mulch? Our building has a mulch bed that runs the entire parkway of a half block. We've had the outfit that mows our tiny yards install and refill it in the past, but wouldn't mind doing it myself if the economics are right. And I've looked into going to Home Depot, or something similar, and buying by the bag and that did not seem like a reasonable option.

I called a lawyer and they said I could file an injunction and contact the city and post no trespassing signs. How much would that cost? Or to take off of work for court dates for an injunction, criminal trespass? I posted more no trespassing signs and some of the workers laughed at them and some others starred at them and at my roof. They still need to do the gutters and the garage. I imagine they will trespass again.

After hearing the debates between alderman Arena and John Garrido and hearing their main arguments, my question is what has John Garrido done as a police lieutenant to bring more police officers to the ward since he works at the 16th district police station?

On his website he states "Portage Park is on the front line of this battle, and we need all the resources we can get to keep this and other ward neighborhoods safe. I know and understand how the Chicago Police Department works. As alderman, I will demand that our community is provided with the necessary police manpower and equipment to combat these violent gangs and keep our streets safe."
http://johngarrido.com/issues/public-safety/

At his current position has he demanded more officers be brought to the ward? Many may say that is not his job, but when you google "What does a police lieutenant do?" you get
"As a police lieutenant you lead. You're the frontline commander of the police department. You pass orders from the top level of command to the police sergeants, who in turn relay those orders to the police officers and detectives."

He says he will demand more officers as alderman but has he done the same as a lieutenant? If he has not at his current position why would that change when he is an alderman?

Anywhere nearby take small food donations?

Hi all, does anyone know of a food bank or agency nearby that takes donations of non-perishable food from individuals? I'm moving and have several grocery bags of items I can't take with me that I hate to just throw out.

  • Christopher House at Altgelt and Sawyer has a small food pantry for their clients. The building is open during school hours.

There's Celestial Vision Food Pantry at 3023 W Fullerton

The Puerto Rican Arts Alliance gives free lessons. Look them up.

  • Our daughter takes lessons from Brian Riggs, a great teacher who comes to our house for reasonably priced lessons. Would be happy to share his contact information directly if you're interested in looking into him as an option.

My condo has some indoor brickwork that needs tuckpointing done and possibly a few bricks replaced. Anyone have any experience with reputable companies in the area?

Hello Neigborhood

Hello all,

My wife Rebekah and I just moved to the neighborhood. We bought our first house and are super excited!!!

  • Lynn OIP Resident / CPS Mom

Welcome, Tim and Rebekah. I'm not sure where you live, but if you are in Old Irving Park, you might want to check out our neighborhood association. www.oldirvingpark.com. We have a monthly newsletter delivered to your door, weekly e-mail blast with activities, daily facebook updates, and monthly meetings. Oh - and a really active google group!

  • Welcome! I hope you like it, it's a great place to start and stay. You have come at an excellent time; the six corners area has been slowly turning around and filling in more vacant spots, you'll never know what new store or business will open up next. If you have any questions or concerns, this is a great web site to get support from your community. :)

Help me report 3510 W. Lyndale to the authorities.

The good neighbors at 3510 W. Lyndale have a pipe coming out of the second floor that runs down the house, through the back yard, and out into the middle of the alley (the alley between Lyndale and Belden, between St. Luis and Drake). The pipe is allowing some enterprising soul to dispose of waste water without tapping into the city sewer. They are basically dumping their sewage into the alley, which is why there are constantly filthy puddles of water all the way down the east end of that alley, no matter how dry the weather.

If you happen to live at a property that backs up against that alley, please call 311 to report these clowns. I've already reported them, but generally the more complaints the city receives, the faster the issue will be resolved.

If you go to the top of the Everyblock page, the toolbar has a "show only" menu - if you click "Open 311 service requests" it gives you a list of some, but not all, service requests in your followed neighborhoods. It doesn't seem to show them for all city services, but it might be a good place to start.

My old neighbors had the same setup, they did their own construction in the basement and moved the washer and dryer, then rigged a PVC pipe to have the water flow out the side of their house into the rain gutter drain on the side of our house/their house and we were flooded with dirty soapy water every time they did laundry. That's what's going on here. I bet they need a new sump pump because water isn't getting pushed out properly and maybe they can't afford it or just don't know any better.
