7th Ward Aldermanic Candidates Debate

Meet the candidates for alderman in the 7th ward: http://ow.ly/HrYAC

  • Gigi Calumet Heights

I really wish that Calumet Heights was not in the same ward with South Shore and Jeffrey Manor. We don't share a lot of same the issues that those areas have and because of that, we get very little attention. I went to the appointed alderman about an issue that was going on in Calumet Heights and her answer was "I thought it was nice around there" and I got no action from her.

  • I have not commented in awhile but I felt compelled to after observing the aldermanic debate. The one encounter that I had with Ms. Holmes she seemed to be a tad bit rude and standoffish. This was during time when she was replacing sandy Jackson. This encounter showed me that she clearly did not want my vote and I will keep that inmind during this election.

Shameful Organization: Calumet Heights Community Association!

This organization held a "community forum" for the candidates in the 7th Ward run-off election this afternoon at Trinity Hospital. The leader Mr. Coleman Conley actually attacked Mr. Mitchell and conducted the meeting in a very disrespectful manner. This is an Illinois non-profit organization that needs to be looked into and reported to the Attorney General's office. As a resident of Calumet Heights I find what transpired to be very disturbing and against the laws for non-profit organizations!

The members of the organization should be ashamed of themselves for allowing themselves to be "puppets" for this man and subject to this nonsense! We will ask that the State look into the financials of the organization and all the members who belong as well. Many of us left along with Mr. Mitchell and his staff and he will receive our vote on April 7th!

Natahsa, you do not fool any of the "thinking" people of the Ward! Your tactics and desperate acts are a direct indication of your disrespect for the people you say you represent. If you do the math, 75% of the voters do not want to "retain" you to represent them moving forward. Now let's talk about the people or person who funded your losing campaign........time to apply for another "online" job!

  • Happy making better choices

Wish I would have known about the forum. What made it so bad?

Winners and losers in Mayor Rahm's TIF game

It's sad to say, but many of Mayor Rahm's most loyal aldermanic supporters come from wards that get the least in the great TIF scam.

It's sad to say, but many of Mayor Rahm's most loyal aldermanic supporters come from wards that get the least in the great TIF scam.
Some reformers I know are a little down in the dumps after Mayor Emanuel trounced them in last week's TIF showdown.
That is, when they tried to get the City Council to force the mayor to spend some of the millions he's got stashed in his TIF slush funds on our dirt-broke public schools, most of the aldermen buckled under pressure from the boss.
Still, I don't see last Wednesday's vote as a total loss. Think of it this way—Aldermen Scott Waguespack, Robert Fioretti, Rick Munoz, Toni Foulkes, and their progressive colleagues smoked out the mayor's loyalists, forcing them to concede that they'd rather let Emanuel squander millions than adequately fund the public schools. So at least we know where everyone stands—the boss is first, the kids come last. He not only strong-armed the aldermen into abandoning whatever principles they might have, but also commanded them to read from the talking points his aides conveniently distributed. Other aldermen defended the TIF program. I can understand why Alderman Burnett's so effusive about tax increment financing. One of the program's central flaws is that it favors gentrifying wards, like his, over poor ones.
Thus, the program that's intended to help the poorest of the poor neighborhoods largely benefits richer ones, like the near-west- and near-north-side communities Alderman Burnett represents. Through 2010, the city spent about $197 million in TIF dollars on various projects in the 27th

Ward. In contrast, the city spent about $7.9 million in Alderman Anthony Beale's far poorer south-side 9th Ward. Those who got, get more. And those who don't got, get the shaft.
It's pretty sad that the mayor's most dependable TIF supporters represent the wards that fare the worst in this ongoing scam.
