God Bless Chicago PD!

Great job by the Chicago PD. God bless them for protecting our city from those who wish to do harm. May the city and especially the media give them praise for their work during NATO. Chicago PD has a great leader in Garry McCarthy.

  • Agree! The people protesting at Cermak & Michigan late this afternoon were just punks there to provoke the police. The cops did a magnificent job as did Channel 5 reporters.

I was just about to post a similar message. I am so proud of our city and police force after this weekend's NATO events. Clearly the preparation and execution was well thought out and led to a VERY controlled response to these out-of-towners looking to cause trouble. I am all for free speech and peaceful protesting, but when people who don't live here come with sinister intentions it will certainly lead to conflict that had to be shut down. I also agree that Garry McCarthy has done a wonderful job. Being on the ground with his officers sends a strong message and his calm, matter-of-fact demeanor when speaking with the media is right on. You have to give Rahm credit for picking him as well. GOOD JOB RAHM, GARRY and ALL THE OFFICERS. THANK YOU!

Cell Phone Fail: AT&T Cannot Provide Service During Cubs Games

Anyone who lives in the neighborhood is likely as frustrated as I am with AT&T because of the terrible service they "provide" during Cubs games. While my iPhone4 displays full bars and 3G, during Cubs games, I may as well turn the phone off because it simply does not work. Making calls is a crap shoot, dropping calls is guaranteed and data speeds are more like 1996 dial up. I am so dependent on my cell phone for business purposes...

While my iPhone4 displays full bars and 3G, during Cubs games, I may as well turn the phone off because it simply does not work. Making calls is a crap shoot, dropping calls is guaranteed and data speeds are more like 1996 dial up. I am so dependent on my cell phone for business purposes and afternoon work-week games pretty much force me to my land line. Does anyone know if AT&T is doing anything to add more capacity and address this issue? Does anyone have an iPhone running on Verizon's network? If so, is it any better? My contract is up next month so I am going to be switching- I just want to know if anyone has had better luck with another provider.

  • I have an iPhone with Verizon service and my ability to do certain things while at a game at Wrigley is spotty - sometimes things (i.e. uploading a photo to Instagram or Facebook) work quickly and other times it fails to upload. There seems to be no consistency to the service (or lack thereof). Overall though, reception across the city with Verizon is better than with AT&T.

  • My boyfriend and I both have iphones with Verizon and live near Wrigley. Just Northeast. I have never had a problem and I live in a highrise. I have lots of friends that have iphones with AT&T and there are quite a few places where I get reception and they...

I have lots of friends that have iphones with AT&T and there are quite a few places where I get reception and they don't. On the flip side, my boyfriend works in the Sears Tower and doesn't get reception very well and his co-workers have AT&T iphone with no problems.

Overall, I wouldn't switch from Verizon. I've had then for years and have very few if any dropped calls. I've had windows, droid and iphone with them. Iphone is the best and they keep putting up more towers.

608 W Barry - New Restaurant?

Anyone have any idea what's opening at 608 W Barry? It's at the corner of Barry & Broadway, where the tiny Sushi Sakura, Sushi Blossom, and Sushi Cherry had operated over the years.

Peeking in today - it's been renovated & there's a full kitchen in there now, with a window to place an order, and not room for much else inside.

I checked permits and did not find anything - anyone have any ideas about what the new place on the block will be?

Are you sure that is not the "old" kitchen since that sushi place was not operating for that long and still probably looks new?

I think both the sushi place and the chicken place next to it were owned by the operator of Stellas Diner. They seem to be trying different concepts for those locations and seem to be impatient. The sushi place, I actually went to when it was open. The one sushi...

The sushi place, I actually went to when it was open. The one sushi chef was too slow for the small seating there but the food that came out was incredible. Great food but we had to wait for 40 min at our table to eat. They give us some free edamame during the wait.

It is the little things

Gahhhhhh. I am so tired of the petty crap that happens to my property. I try very hard to keep the front of my house looking nice. Why do people have to rip plants out of the ground/planter or destroy retaining walls? Clearly break-ins or other more intrusive crimes are worse, but at least I can understand why someone would want a computer or cell phone. I don't get the thrill of ruining someone's landscaping. I don't know if it will help, but I guess I have to move forward with installing cameras.

I'm sorry your property has been damaged. I guess that's just another "perk" of city life. Bleh.

Planes in Lakeview...

Did anyone else hear a loud noise like a plane flying way too close to the buildings by Lake Shore & Irving Park area? It freaked me out so bad... now I just hear helicopters hovering around in the area... :-/

  • Flyover after opening ceremony at Wrigley honoring our servicemen. As far as my kitties, they are done with the planes and helicopters (I live near the mayor's house). They want familiar noises like cars, motorcycles, sirens...that sort of thing.

  • NATO!!!! When it's gone they will be gone, till then just endure the ride.

Its the little things that matter...

Orange and white kitty - Waveland and Lake Shore Dr.?

All of a sudden I'm seeing a very beautiful cat prowling around in the "secret garden" behind the two Waveland 6 flats.
Heretofore this has been a "no predator" area where birds and other creatures could live in peace - now not so much.
Is this your cat? If so, if you insist on putting her/him out prowling (which can be dangerous as there may be toxins in the yards) please put a pop collar with a bell around his or her neck to give the birds, rabbits and squirrels a break.
Thanks very much.

  • It could be a lost cat or a stray that has moved into the area. You might want to check lost pets on craigslist.

New Bike Racks - where did they come from?

Just curious about the new bike racks you see through Lakeview. They are cool colors and in the shape of a bike. I like them and just wondering if they were purchased by the city or some how locally. Any comments would be helpful?

  • interesting chicagoan... that makes me feel less bad of giving up loyalty to bun mi to try the other :]

nothing wrong w/ some good competition maybe.. Nhu Lan is often cited as being the best banh mi in the city. (ba le is probably the most popular, but i don't know if i'd call it the best ... and it's a chain).

personally i'd prefer a great pho shop at this point in this area... ? :]

  • I can't believe it took me so long to try Nhu Lan on Belmont, but I stopped in for the first time tonight, and it was fantastic. Great flavors, fresh ingredients, and at about $5, you can't beat the value. The staff were really friendly, too.

Check your doors to make sure they're locked, people.

Jacklyn, I own a two flat and my renter is looking for a possible room mate since her current roommate got married. it's a very nice 2 bedroom one bath unit. We are further Northwest around Montrose and Francisco but you can walk to the Francisco Brown line station in 5-8 minutes. You look to be about her age, she is 27. It's a quiet place to live around so you have peace of mind and then you can El it to where all the fun is. Let me know if you're interested and I will hook the two of you up. Joe

Retired love lakeview

Underpass at Rosco and Lake Shore Dr.

Tom Tunney, the Cubs and many volunteers cleaned up and repainted the underpass to the park at Rosco. It looked great. Well it didn't take long for someone(s) to deface the walls with graffiti. Shame on them.

  • Lee, thanks for posting that here. I work for Alderman Tunney and we are also painting the Barry Underpass at the end of the month. We will make sure to go paint over this graffiti @Roscoe as well.

  • Is your RFID chip registered through a service (such as HomeAgain)? They do a great job of sending emails out to their "Pet Rescuer" network.

Also, probably wouldn't be a bad idea to call Chicago Veterinary Emergency and Specialty Center (773.281.7110). Hopefully someone has your cat safe and sound (or you can at least have others prepared). Good Luck!

  • also he is neutered. lost for almost 24 hours now.

Subsidized housing at Montrose Harbor

Does anyone know what can be done about the housing development at Montrose Harbor?

The residents except for retrieving free food do nothing but flutter and squack among themselves.

They have a beutiful waterfront view at taxpayer expense yet do nothing to upkeep the property.
