There's a broken water main in the area. The water has been shut off since 3:00 a.m. The affected area is from Stony Island to Constance from 71st to 74th Street. The Water Department does not know how long before water service will be restored.

Winners and losers in Mayor Rahm's TIF game

It's sad to say, but many of Mayor Rahm's most loyal aldermanic supporters come from wards that get the least in the great TIF scam.
Some reformers I know are a little down in the dumps after Mayor Emanuel trounced them in last week's TIF showdown.
That is, when they tried to get the City Council to force the mayor to spend some of the millions he's got stashed in his TIF slush funds on our dirt-broke public schools, most of the aldermen buckled under pressure from the boss.
Still, I don't see last Wednesday's vote as a total loss. Think of it this way—Aldermen Scott Waguespack, Robert Fioretti, Rick Munoz, Toni Foulkes, and their progressive colleagues smoked out the mayor's loyalists, forcing them to concede that they'd rather let Emanuel squander millions than adequately fund the public schools.

So at least we know where everyone stands—the boss is first, the kids come last.

He not only strong-armed the aldermen into abandoning whatever principles they might have, but also commanded them to read from the talking points his aides conveniently distributed. Other aldermen defended the TIF program. I can understand why Alderman Burnett's so effusive about tax increment financing. One of the program's central flaws is that it favors gentrifying wards, like his, over poor ones.
Thus, the program that's intended to help the poorest of the poor neighborhoods largely benefits richer ones, like the near-west- and near-north-side communities Alderman Burnett represents. Through 2010, the city spent about $197 million in TIF dollars on various projects in the 27th Ward.

In contrast, the city spent about $7.9 million in Alderman Anthony Beale's far poorer south-side 9th Ward.

Those who got, get more. And those who don't got, get the shaft.
It's pretty sad that the mayor's most dependable TIF supporters represent the wards that fare the worst in this ongoing scam.

We lost the bank, grocery and hardware stores, and several clothing stores. Well, South Shore Community, next business to leave will be Radio Shack. How long will South Shore remain a food desert. Please come out and vote neighbors!! Tip for today: if you continue to do the same thing, you will get the same results every time. If what you are doing is not working or giving you the outcome you desire, change your approach. I love Hyde Park, and South Shore. It's time for some major improvements. In all honesty, Walgreens should not be allowed to continue to sell alcohol.
Tomorrow is the last day for early voting. Take a look at the old Hamilton theater. How many of you remember the Hamilton?
Have a safe and happy weekend.

What A Relief !

Have you noticed that since the liquor store at 73rd & Exchange has been closed, there's a whole different atmosphere in that area, no public drinking, hanging out, open drug sales, loose squares, public urination and fights, all within 75 feet of two daycare's. I Love It!!! Now all it needs is a couple of speed bumps on 73rd st, heading west, between Coles and Exchange, to slow traffic down as it nears the daycare's. THANK YOU whoever is responsible for this.

  • @ bunnieface, a new store has opened on 79th and SS, initially, they advertised food, now it shows liquor. Haven't seen loitering yet ninja's don't hang out in the cold. Prayerfully, the summer months will not produce the same results as the previous establishment.

  • I sure hope it doesn't produce too much loitering.

I didn't get a chance to ask (and she high-tailed it out of there pretty quickly) "how are these guys are able to meet the asking price and still deliver a quality product when no one else could?" Did the lease holder drop the price? I've contacted the company directly with no luck and have not gotten a response from the alderman's office. If anyone has this info, could you please respond? Not throwing shade on the alderman or the company, I honestly want to know how they could make this fit their business model when no other grocer could.

An Open Letter to the Chicago Media: Sandi Jackson is off the Ballot

If one were to base their perception of the 7th Ward’s Aldermanic campaign on media portrayals, the election plot lines would be well suited for a prime-time drama. If one were to base their perception of the 7th Ward’s Aldermanic campaign on media portrayals, the election plot lines would be well suited for a prime-time drama. What the media doesn’t seem inclined to cover is the host of issues being debated on the ground and the multitude of challenges (and opportunities) the Ward faces.
Instead, the media rely on salacious stories meant to relegate an important election to side-show status for a community in dire need of leadership. Nowhere is this more evident than in the ongoing portrayal of Keiana Barrett as the scandal-tainted Chief of Staff of former Alderman Sandi Jackson.

When discussing Ms. Barrett, the media consistently prefaces with reference to the Jackson connection, priming readers to associate her candidacy with a scandal in which she was never implicated. Even the Sun-Times Editorial Board stated that “there are lingering questions about [Barrett’s] association with the Jacksons.” My question is simple: as a pillar of Chicago journalism, isn’t it the Sun-Times’ responsibility to attempt to answer (or at the very least outline) these “lingering questions,” particularly if they influenced its decision not to endorse Ms. Barrett?

Perhaps, the answers to those questions would be significantly less interesting to readers than the alternative. According to CNN, Sandi Jackson pleaded guilty “to one count of filing false tax returns in connection with the misuse of her husband's campaign funds.” To the best of my knowledge, Ms. Barrett’s responsibilities as 7th Ward Chief of Staff didn’t include personal tax preparation or the management of a US Congressman’s campaign war chest. More importantly, her name does not show up once in the indictment. Ms. Barrett once stated to Mary Mitchell that, regarding the Jackson scandal, she “wasn’t privy to the details of what was transpiring.” Since then, nothing has materialized to prove otherwise.
