East Garfield's Own Barbara Bates on Fashion Star

I thank Pasha Golliday for letting me know that Barbara Bates, a local designer, is competing on the new reality show, Fashion Star. The show airs on Tuesday nights on Channel 5, from 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm. She is competing against 15 other designers to sell designs to Macy's Saks Fifth Avenue and H&M each week. The winner will get a multi-million dollar contract to sell lines at all three stores. Barbara sold $50,000 worth of merchandise to Macy's tonight.

Here is a story that appeared in the Sun-Times not too long ago.

yes Valerie I start watching the Promo shows last week and came across Barbara Bates. She's the designer that made Michelle Obama dress am I'm correct? I love that show glad it something on TV to watch besides reality shows..lol thank again Valerie

Fortheright, I'm not aware of any designs she's done for Michelle Obama. The only Chicago designer I can think of for the First Lady is Nina Pinto. There may be others, I'm just not aware. I do recall Barbara Bates designing for Michael Jordan and other athletes.

Church members, residents protest gang violence with prayer
Pastor will take Sunday service to the streets to raise community attention on youth killed

What: Members of Greater St. John Bible Church and its pastor, the Rev. Ira Acree will take Sunday’s service to the streets on Chicago’s west side to focus attention on the senseless violence that is taking place in Chicago as well as the recent injustice against slain youth Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida.

Community residents, police and elected officials will join Pastor Acree and members of the church's mentoring program in leading a prayer service in the Austin neighborhood. While the group seeks to express their solidarity with the Martin family, they hope to express their outrage at the youth murdered in Chicago this year.
"While many of us are justifiably upset about the slaying of Trayvon Martin in Florida, we are even more outraged about the excessive number of youth that have been killed right under our nose here in Chicago since school started." stated Pastor Acree
Acree and community leaders will call on state legislators to invest money in mentoring programs of faith based institutions and for the state to create 2,000 summer jobs for youth on Chicago’s west side.

"Many people unfortunately resort to violence out of their desperation, it is imperative that we do everything in our power and on our watch to protect our youth and provide them with positive life options," added Acree

Last week, Pastor Acree spoke on behalf of the community along with Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Police Superintendent Gary McCarthy, after police arrested several gang members on drug charges. Mayor Emanuel stated that more clergy need to come outside of the church buildings to minister to the entire community.

Interesting Article Regarding Why There are More Gang Members in Chicago Than Anywhere in the Country

I thank my friend John Ellis for sharing this link.http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/The-312/January-2012/Why-Are-There-So-Many-Gang-Members-in-Chicago/

This is an awesome article. The thing that got my attention was Whet Moser's description of the criminal communities as "stable". In contrast, I have never heard anyone refer to the communities from which the gangmembers come as "stable". How is it that our anti-social attributes have become more functional than the local societies that we call neighborhoods? This article is enough to make you say "just because you're a paranoid doesn't mean nobody's following you." The conspiracy theories just may not be theories.

    PART 4-

The city is not going to continue to let the reputation of gangs and crime be the downfall of it's attempt at global success. So basically the stragglers will be removed completely. There will no longer be gang ridden neighborhoods in Chicago because Chicago is striving to go in a totally different direction. Chicago is seeking to become a global leader and Mayor Emanuel is not going to "work with" the stragglers holding back the progress this time around.

The city will not always have this problem but unfortunately, our race will.

Hope is some weirdness the culture is addicted to. Too bad the culture is not addicted to step by step progress...through trial and error.

Try a while, toss out bad ideas, bad politicians, bad policies and move on and try the next.

Typically those who are STUCK need to get ideas from OUTSIDERS instead of being incestuious...and repeating the past failures over and over and over and over.

Property is NOT VALUABLE here as long as it is too dangerous to live here in EGP.

My Italian roommate has been acocsted 3 times this week. Twice on the Greenline/Kedzie train and once on the street. He is clueless why neighborhood people bother him as he is tolerant and doing his best to make the area better...

Out with the old in with the new...is a protocol not widely practiced here where politicians stay in for decades and produce the same poor results.

Don't get me wrong. I knw a few who are worth diamonds. But the worse the area the worse the politician but they sure know how to pander and stir the pot.

North Lawndale African American Heritage Quilting Project is Taking the Show on the Road

Thank you for supporting the North Lawndale African American Heritage Quilting Project. We are developing a series of community quilts that document the heritage and culture of African Americans in North Lawndale, including our families, organizations, traditions, block clubs, schools and churches. We are now in the process of working with organizations on their premises to develop quilts. We will be partnering with City Year to develop a quilt for Collins Academy High School, and are in the process of completing a quilt developed by the members of Carey Tercentenary AME Church. We will be starting a quilt to honor the Guyton family as well. If your organization is interested in participating, please contact me at 773-521-3137 or valeriefleonard@msn.com

Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation Announces
2012 Clean and Green Citywide Beautification Effort

The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation invites residents and community groups to volunteer to help revitalize their neighborhoods by participating in the 2012 Clean and Green citywide beautification effort on Saturday, April 21.

“For more than two decades, Chicagoans have come together to help make a difference in their neighborhood through the Clean and Green program,” said Thomas G. Byrne, commissioner, Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation. “By volunteering for just a few hours to assist with tasks like raking leaves, weeding, or removing litter that has accumulated during the winter, residents will not only help take care of Chicago’s magnificent landscape, but foster community pride.”

Community groups who wish to participate are asked to identify a worksite and contact 311 to register. The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation can provide the brooms, rakes, shovels and bags needed to get the job done.

Individuals who wish to participate can also call 311 to be referred to Clean and Green activities in their area. Anyone interested in participating in the program is encouraged to register by April 13.

In 2011, nearly 1,000 residents from approximately 400 community groups participated in the Clean and Green program.

The 2012 Clean and Green program is sponsored by the City of Chicago and Keep America Beautiful.

So I thought it would be fun to ask how you would give back to your neighborhood if you were the lucky winner?

I would donate money to build a YMCA in our community. I would also donate money to build a larger library. I would donate money to restore the historical gems in our community.

I went to the site and see that it connects to a number of City of Chicago sites, including the TIF data, one of the City's webpages that I use the most. I haven't gone through it, but at first brush, it seems very powerful, and could be a good one-stop shop, so to speak, for those of us who use City and County data from time to time. The one disadvantage, as I noted for the City's website, is there is soooo much information that it can be overwhelming. I would prefer the disadvantage of navigating through the databases to the disadvantage of not having the information online and having to do a FOIA request. Again, thanks.

I love to see the park used, but get angry over the amount of litter and trash that is carelessly left behind, including loads of glass bottels in the playground and diapers. But anger really is counterproductive in this case.

So, the other day, I bought a big box of 13 gallon garbage bags. After supper/night fall, I take my box, walk the half block over to the park, approach the various parties using the park, ask how they are doing and how unusual it is to these nice and warm evenings this early in the year, and "By the way, would you like a small garbage bag for the trash?".

I was genuinely surprised by the positive response. Nobody declined. Some asked for two bags: "Let me pick up the trash at the fence too". The super cool late teens early tweens, don't quite know what to do and hold the garbage bag as awkward as a bunch of flowers for their girlfriend...

Was the park and playground clean the next morning. No, absolutely not. But is was a lot less worse than it has been before. I think it may help if I go out twice, once right after night fall and again later just before I go to bed.

Move north of Ogden in the park and you are hard pressed to find a full or overflowing trash can. It is not because there are more trash cans, but because a number of park users don't throw their trash into them but drop it on the ground where they stand.

The stretch along Albany at the middle school is a popular hang out place. Park users in the parkway at night with their cars running, the music going, drinking... I remember one incident where someone leaning on a trash can finished their bottle, cup or can (can't exactly remember) and dropped it on the ground - while leaning on the trash can! He just could have lifted the lid...

The park district is doing a great job cleaning stuff up after a busy night - and its not because the trash cans are full... But all that cleaning up is keeping them from other work that needs to get done in the park.

  • gpblight 15 Yr East Garfield Resident

We had a hard struggle with S&S about trash cans on the 100+200N Kedzie blocks. For 8 years they told us "people here" wouldn't use the trash cans. After we got them they were OVERFLOWING every day. And we couldn't get S&S to empty them. After 6 months of complaining...they took the cans away and we are without cans again.

Trash cans can be a political issue. Not interested in dredging up that issue ...which was a Picardi/ward issue.

March 28, 2012

Dear Supporters of Great Public Schools for ALL STUDENTS:

As you've probably heard by now, the State House Elementary/Secondary Education Committee SUBJECT MATTER HEARING held on Monday 3/26 evoked widespread concern and indignation from both political parties about CPS' lack of transparency and accountability to the Legislature, the people of Chicago and public school students.

Remarks by State Reps on Monday ranged from threats to subpoena the CPS CEO and Board President and other top officials, to comments from some legislators suggesting that CPS' state funding should be held up, to remarks that perhaps the General Assembly should re-visit whether Mayoral Control should remain in place! Chair Linda Chapa La Via allowed two Dyett HS students to testify Monday. House members made it clear they also want to hear from the TOP OFFICIALS at CPS. So a Joint Session of the House Appropriations/Elem-Sec Ed and Elementary/Secondary Ed Committees has been called; the Senate Education and Appropriations Committees were invited to join them. [Note - As of 10:30 AM this morning, the Senate committees had yet to post a joint session with the House, so whether State Senators will attend is STILL IN QUESTION.) (continued below)

As of now, it is UNKNOWN whether members of the public will be allowed to give testimony, but the situation is very fluid.

From Otis Monroe:

It seems Chicago has their own Trayvon Martin. This should come as no surprise to most, since police officers are probably quite jumpy since the shooting of Officer Del Pearson, with that being said, it is still unacceptable for anyone to be shot and killed by a random bullet, especially one shot by a police officer.

In Police Oversight terms these cases would be designated under "state of mind" or "perception" shootings, which involve, as Special counsel, Bob Merrick states in his 30th semi-annual report (Sept 2011), to the LA Sheriff's department;

"In this report, we focus on "state of mind" or "perception" shootings where deputies perceive, accurately or not, that a suspect may be armed or going for a gun. We are concerned to see that state of mind shootings rose by 50 percent in the past year. We note that 2010 had the highest proportion of hit shootings in recent years in which the suspect was unarmed. This fact was further reflected in 2010 in the number of "waistband shootings" where the suspect was shot at upon reportedly reaching for his waistband. Waistband shootings are increasing, making up about one-third of all hit and non-hit shooting cases in 2010, whereas in the past, this type of shooting generally constituted about one-fifth."

It is imperative that all the facts are known in reference to this shooting. It is incumbent upon IPRA, the community, and the CPD to keep the public aware of all circumstances surrounding the shootings and killings of our citizens. At this point we have no statement since we are unaware of all of the facts, our push is for a thorough investigation.

It is unfortunate, but this shooting will probably be settle in civil court, and cost the city of Chicago millions of dollars. If you remember, LaTanya Haggerty was shot and killed by CPD officers because she had a cellphone in her hand, (perceived as a gun), and it cost the city $18 million dollars in 2001.

As I walked yesterday throughout Lawn-dale with the protesters and the family of Rekia Boyd details after details of the unjustified murder of this young lady and others were being revealed a banner of 20 plus faces spilled out before us the future doctor, nurses, lawyers, activist, reporters, etc smiling faces bright eyes looked back at us demanding that all of us stand up for them as they couldn't do it for themselves or for the countless others that one day mite be the future faces on a banner just like the one we were looking at yesterday. I Am the mother of a 33 year old man child. He of course wouldn't appreciate me calling him the latter (child) but he is and always will be my child that's just the way mothers think of there children. As I listened to Rekia's mother speak I could only imagine how she feels and think this woman could be me not long ago I would have been her. As we all know living in Chicago being a black man young or old isn't and has never been easy.. But Rekia isn't a young man she was a young woman with dreams of becoming a nurse, taking care of the kids in her family described as the baby sitter of the family. That lone night she was a 22 year old hanging out having fun. In my minds eye I can see her laughing, joking around, she was pretty I can see the guy's trying to hit on her, if her big brother had been there I could see him telling them leave my little sister alone isn't that what big brother's do.

We must also let the Preachers and the people who say that they are leaders know it they continue to follow these people that are not doing there jobs that are not benefiting our communities we will call them out shut them down as well as call a liar a liar an speak the truth no matter where we are or who you are we will no longer stand down as our children are murdered, run down, beat down in the streets, falsely convicted, disgraced on the internet after they are murdered by bad Cops or want to be Neighborhood Watch Members. The Marches of the 60's are not the answer for 2012 our children don't think neither do they react or act as our grandparents did. Yesterdays protest wasn't for everyone if you don't understand that or if you couldn't deal with that Mark is right it is best that you stay away from some protest.

If they can arrest 50 people on Adams and Laramie why haven't they done it before now were they waiting for the coffer to build up evidence has come up missing before will it happen again. In order to build relationships they must understand that we will no longer tolerate selective enforcement of the laws. Should elders have to pass crowds to enter business when the laws are clearly on the books. Where is the outcry from the Alderman/women the Preacher/NAACP the community for the family of Rekia. What they must understand is when they ask for our support when one of there's is shot down we must have there support when one of ours is shot down/run down by one of them no more lies and cover ups. How long must we suffer under the watchful eye of dirty police when people are beaten into confessions, wrongfully convected, and killed while Administration after Administration turn there back on the people and family who suffer as they protect there own. They must understand that the community hasn't forgotten the girl with the cell phone, the young-men that have wasted away under Daley watch, Mr. Morgan, the young-man kill by the police officer hit on his bike and now Rekia we to must protect our own that being said would include the countless officers that are doing there best to be the best they can be to serve and protect

We need papertrail, facts, evidence to support our cases on the blocks where we live. Everyblock is very good about having the news people alert us on murders and shootings. It is up to us to get this problem fixed ONCE AND FOR ALL.

The way it is now...is the system controls everything and it gets more dangerous and worse every year. 1.2 mil left.

Thanks again for your support in our attempts to save historic 3411 West Douglas Boulevard. Losing this treasure has touched a nerve on so many different levels. The preservationists are calling for changing City policies to ensure that we better protect historic sacred places and other buildings of architectural and historical significance. A number of local residents care, not only about preserving the architectural integrity of the community, but, raise significant questions about policies concerning the maintenance of vacant lots; public safety issues presented by abandoned buildings and vacant lots; the need to develop a comprehensive community and economic development plan around Douglas Boulevard, North Lawndale's history and culture; and the need to enhance arts and cultural programs and venues in hopes of driving economic development and improving education; and the need to develop and improve cultural institutions like our local libraries. We have a unique opportunity to captitalize on this loss and channel our energies towards a positive end. If you are interested in taking this conversation off line to begin to imagine the possibilities, please post below. Depending on the desired end, we will need to take our concerns to Alderman Chandler, the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and the Department of Housing and Economic Development.

I was wondering if the battle for the West Douglas Church was lost. I signed the petition while back and it was clear that this Church needed to be saved.

I was recently thinking and had an idea to purpose a grant to save the church and turn it into a art/music venue. Which would in could generate revenue for the neighborhood, foster the arts and bring young people like myself into a neighborhood I would otherwise not go into.

If the Church is lost, I'm sure this idea could be applied elsewhere, as there countless beautiful abandon buildings in Chicago. Valerie your posts are quite inspirational, and although I do not live in Lawndale, I would be interested joining your conversation.

"As you know, Chicago Public Schools are struggling to provide our children the quality education that is necessary to put them on a path for a successful future. CPS administrators have decided one way to "fix" this problem is to close failing schools.

Unfortunately, the process that CPS has chosen to close these facilities has been detrimental to many families in Chicago. Even more concerning, is CPS' lack of interest in hearing from those most affected by their decisions.
I am sponsoring a measure that would put a one-year school closure moratorium on all CPS closures to allow the public the opportunity to be heard by CPS officials. The one-year moratorium would also give CPS more time to create and implement required transitional plans identifying academic support, security, and transportation issues before students are re-assigned.

Please visit www.ThinkBeforeYouCloseMySchool.com to sign a petition showing your support for a one-year moratorium on school facility closures and do not forget to forward it on to your friends."

When election time rolled around, the voters were inspired, not apathetic, because they had been served. The only thing that remains constant with North Lawndale politicians today is “promises.”

Today city services and jobs (where ever they are and if you can meet the criteria) are parceled out to cronies and relatives. Do you wonder why there is voter apathy in the 24th Ward?

Voters are tired of hearing the same old song again and again... it only makes voter apathy worse. Ward politics have degenerated to cliques, cronies and friends with benefits. Political offices are being sought by relatives and friends who want a better paying job while dedication and community service goes lacking. Where are the dedicated candidates who want to serve the people?

Voter expectations of politicians’ in North Lawndale are very low and as a result, they don’t vote for anybody. Wake up people and vote for people who want to serve you! Remember, “Government comes from the people, not at them” and “People get the government they deserve.”

As I worked the polls in Austin on Tues and work as an advocate in a Lawndale School I hear the same thing it seems no matter what part of the west-side I visit. No one is holding a gun to any one's head neither are the pimps beating the w---s with cloth hangers. The political process in our community is one that has not been explained nor do our people understand what it means or how important it is to vote. I Am sure some of you are saying why do you say that Windy many don't know what a committeeman job is. They complain about the Alderman in the 24Th ward but they don't go and vote. We complain about the Alderman in the 28Th ward but we allow him to hold two positions in the same ward were many say that he's not doing the job as Aldermen. Education and Educating people is vital in our community they don't know how important delegate are, not understanding that what happens in Washington isn't going to trickle down on us but what happens in City Gov. and in Springfield is going to Hit us like a tone of bricks. My understanding is that Mr. Mickey Johnson was running for committeeman in the 24Th ward but lost his bid to the Alderman that people are complaining about change comes about when you stop talking and start doing. No disrespect to Mr. Mitchell I agree with his post but those of us that are active have a responsibility to help change the mindset of our young people and some of our elders teach the process empower the voters so that they will want to vote these people out of office show them how to pull voting record, stop looking for endorsements from others on how we should vote if there doing what you feel is good for the community, your children, you, your mother, father, grandmother keep them in office if not vote them out but vote base on there yes and no votes. A pimp only has as much control as you allow him or her to have.
