Four months to open a grocery store is NOT bad at all-WF is taking a YEAR. So not complaining.

Anyways I have immediate family in upper management at a different Mariano's who also have to serve on the "grand opening team". It would be nice to pay them a visit.

Don't forget we have an Aldi! Not as vast selection I l know but have an organic line now-produce milk eggs just not meat.

Not a fan of Aldi, especially not of having to rent the cart, leave my groceries in it out front while I go and get my car, and having a really limited brand selection. When I find something I like, I want to be able to find it again the next time I need it. And the fact that brands often change at Aldi can be really frustrating. I'm a bit of a foodie (even though I'm also a dieter), so I like the fact that I can get artisanal cheeses at Mariano's and WF (cut to order if the prewrapped pieces are too big for me to use in time), heritage pork and wild fish as well as free-range farm (not battery) eggs from True Nature, seafood from Dirk's, really good steaks, poultry & seafood online from Peapod and Snake River Farms, low-carb breads at J.D. Mills (though Mariano's now carries Today's Temptations low-carb wholegrain), and organic produce from whoever has the best selection on a given day. Being mostly retired, I have the time to be able to shop often and I love to cook.

There was just a srory in the redeye how they were a thing of the past. Being studios for 800-1200. They are saying there are only a few in bad neighborhoods for a 1000. One person she interviewed got lucky and got one in Lincoln park for 900. It doesn't have a kitchen, so she had to get a hot plate, microwave, and toaster oven. She washes her dishes in her bath tub witch I couldn't go. In our building I've seen some other condos go for 700. The only cost u will have is internet and it is 14 and up. Electric, gas, water, cable, everything to include over 400 cable stations are included to. No security. Those costs removed takes it down to your cost...good luck

  • If you are looking to move a little more north to Roger park there's a building on sheridan an Northshore that has studios for 675 I used to live there its was a nice building 6710 n sheridan might wanna check with them

Police taped off area around Rosehill & Hermitage

I just went for a run and saw that police had taped off the alley behind an apartment complex at Rosehill and Hermitage. There were cops all over the place and I was wondering if anyone knew what happened.

New building on Broadway?

Anyone know what is being built next to the Broadway Antique shop?

  • Sandy in EdgeGlen EdgeGlen since 1987

An urgent-care medical clinic. Unlike the "minute" or "take-care" clinics inside chain drugstores, it'll have MDs, not just nurse practitioners on staff. Bridges the gap between conventional doctors' offices and ERs (which are overused by those who can't afford them and overpriced for those who can). Rumor is that it'll be affordable.
Bummer is the apparent lack of parking.

Building Condition Report Recommendations

Does anyone know of a good, affordable company or individual that can do a full evaluation of a building - e.g. evaluating the roof, electrical, heating, and water systems, and overall condition of the common areas (inside and outside) of the building - not individual units? Does anyone know of a good, affordable company or individual that can do a full evaluation of a building - e.g. evaluating the roof, electrical, heating, and water systems, and overall condition of the common areas (inside and outside) of the building - not individual units? We're a relatively small condo association and we'd like to have one done and am having a hard time finding one. We've already looked on Yelp and contacted several places, either they dealt only with individual condo inspections, were not thorough enough, or didn't return phone calls. In the case of one of the most popular companies on Yelp's list, Domicile Consulting - they were very difficult to reach - by phone or through their website. Tried contacting them for months! When I finally got them, they promised to send a draft contract out and never did. Then when I tried calling them back to remind them, still never returned my calls. I would not say I'm difficult to deal with. At any rate, I would welcome any suggestions!

  • Ann - What is the purpose of the evaluation? The company/person that you seek to hire will probably vary depending on what you need. For example, do you need the building evaluated for real estate transaction purposes, fiscal planning or are there building condition issues that need to be addressed? Are you considering improving the building somehow - new windows, mechanical system, energy efficiency, etc.? Your answers will help determine the type of evaluation that is necessary and the correct professional for the evaluation.

  • Ann

    Good Questions Chad -
We want do some proactive planning because we have an older building that is in need of repairs and we want to determine the best ways to make these repairs, get cost estimates, and create a timeline for the repairs need to be made. We want, as much as possible, to avoid being caught by surprise with a huge special assessment and/or the boiler breaking down in the middle of the winter, for example.

If not you need to, Oak Street Health is a very unique company taking on improving Older adults health by offering services that you won't find in many doctors offices. First they offer rides for seniors and as you can remember with all the crazy winter weather we had it was extremely difficult to get to your doctors appointments if you rely on the CTA to get around. Oak Street Health patients enjoyed being picked up and dropped off for their appointments. They also have a community room that all patients can come and enjoy anytime even if they just want to hangout and have coffee with friends. Plus they are able to enjoy many of the programs happening in the community room such as workouts, presentation on diabetes and other health related issues. I hope you really take a look at it if you or someone you know is a senior who is on Medicare.

Affordable spaces for 100 guests in the Andersonville/Edgewater area?

I've seen this post before but wanted to see if anyone had any FRESH/NEW ideas of affordable spaces that would cater to a decent-sizes group to celebrate getting legally married! I wrote down every suggestion from past threads but wanted to reach out in case any of you have found another place we could consider. Thanks for your time!

  • One last update...we decided to go with Hamburger Mary's for their pricing, facilities that caters to a large number of guests, and all that comes along with it! I highly recommend working with them and their event planner, Shanna Behrend, has been a really positive experience. Thank you, everyone, for the wonderful suggestions!

Lucky for us, there is one more weekend of shows coming up starting on Friday April 18th and Saturday April 19th at Ebenezer Lutheran Church at 1650 W Foster. Chicago Danztheare is the current artist resident at Ebenezer Lutheran Church and the partnership has been great for both the church as well as the artists rehearsing and performing there.

Growing Presence of Breweries In and Around Edgewater

We at the Edgeville Buzz enjoy an occasional local and fresh beer, and we have done our best to be aware of local businesses that continue to keep our glasses full and plenty. We also look forward to businesses that are planning to move into our community and lucky for us, Half Acre is expanding their operations and our neighborhood gets to be their new home!

Is the 40th Ward doing participatory budgeting?

So I'm reading all these articles about the participatory budgeting process in nearby wards -- some are holding votes, some conducting online surveys, some holding public meetings -- and I'm realizing that I've never heard a single word about PB from Ald. Patrick O'Connor, who ganked my Lincoln Square block in the redistricting. Is O'Connor even doing PB in the 40th?

  • Sheila Pacione Neighbor

I live there and have never noticed meetings for it. You could start a dialogue with them by emailing ward40@cityofchicago.org or patrick.o'connor@cityofchicago.org.

Mariano's is hopping(?)

Anyone know why Mariano's rooftop parking lot is full today? It may be staff preparing for the opening - but if so, I sure hope their employees don't drive to work (or park somewhere else). The lot is literally packed!

  • chrisfinn bornagain chicagoan

And the Doms on B'way closed at the same time as the one @Sheridan & Foster but is already opening this coming week. Strange that WF is doing nothing at that one except put paper on the windows & needs over a year to get it ready.

  • ScottK Near Glenwood/Devon in North Edgewater

Looking forward to using the 151 again, almost door to door, to discover Mariano's. I really miss the Dominick's and will be glad to shop at that location again.

Iconic Charlie Chaplin Theatre Up For Auction

Commuters and local residents pass by this unique building everyday at 5757 North Ridge and ask themselves what is happening with that unusual building? The building has a lot of history but the original purpose was that of a silent movie theatre for Charlie Chaplin.  Built in 1918, the space functioned as a movie goer’s paradise until the mid-1930s. Since then it has been used for multiple purposes that were very unkind to its structure.

The Landmark in Andersonville Ready For a New Chapter

Jan Baxter believes in her core that it’s not enough to just own and operate a business. Rather,  it is the responsibility of everyone in the community to invest in and participate in growth and development for the good of all residents. She has worked tirelessly to promote Andersonville both as a resident and a shop owner for the last 50 years. Anyone who knows Jan personally can attest to the endless hours she has volunteered and invested into the community she calls home. The Landmark is a staple boutique. The two-story shop features earrings, gifts and art on the first floor, antiques in the basement and a salon run by her daughter Jennifer on the second floor. The neighborhood has always enjoyed the friendly and inviting atmosphere at The Landmark, where customers are greeted by name when they walk in the door. Jan’s commitment to the community, from the annual shopping night for kids to Mid Summer Fest,  has been a special love affair with the Chicago north side neighborhood affectionately known as Andersonville.

3am gunshots??

Did anyone else hear a lot of sirens and then what may have been 6-7 shots around 3am today near Senn High school?? I was awoken by the sirens but following that heard a bunch of blasts- not sure what they were.

  • Edgewater Nora Agrees with Pink. Founder, Arka Pana Consulting.

Many folks reported seeing fireworks at this time and in the general area, according to the EdgevilleBuzz facebook page and other comment threads on EveryBlock: https://www.facebook.com/EdgeVilleBuzz

  • Joan M. Back in Lincoln Square and liking it.

Please bear in mind that when you hear as many as a dozen or more "shots," as has been mentioned here, the likelihood is very high that you are hearing fireworks, not gunfire. Of course, fireworks that make that kind of noise are illegal in Chicago, too. But perhaps you'll have more peace of mind.
