Hey it's Autumn and it's Gloomy Out Most Days so Take Your Meds!

I figure I'll post this now because it just needs to be said. If I'd have said it sooner maybe we wouldn't have to live in fear of summoned meteors and what not. Be kind to your neighbors! It's gonna be a long winter. Who wants some comics?

  • Caroline from Silvertown Silvertown Studio

What is a good recommendation for a winter, cozy, under the blanket comic? I find single issues don't interact with blankets well, and most trade paperbacks I finish in an hour. Maybe something with meaty text?

  • Terry Midnight Owner of Third Coast Comics in Edgewater

Hey Caroline, lemme know when you're ready and i'll have some ideas for you!

Is this typical now?

I was walking on Bryn Mawr/Winthrop near the 7-11 and there was a Chicago police officer standing up against the building near the door with an assault rifle. There was no obvious criminal activity occurring and there was no armored truck picking up cash from a business there. Is this normal now for the police to stand on the street with assault rifles? I like the police presence, but unless it's a SWAT raid, why in the hell do they need assault rifles? Maybe it's silly to be more concerned about an assault rifle than a standard police revolver, but I found it very unsettling.

Electrician

Hi,
I need a licensed and insured electrician to put up some lights in my condo. Does anyone have a recommendation for someone who is reasonable and dependable?

  • Dirk A. Gould 10+ year Resident and Promoter of RP Real Estate

David Pangelo (708) 516-3468. My only complaint is that he is harder to track down for an appointment as he gains in popularity. But the work is high quality and he is reasonable in price. I think I originally found him on Angie's List.

  • JPC 20 + in the neighborhood

I have used Metro Electric for small jobs (replacing lights, etc.) and big jobs (rewiring an entire floor). They do excellent work. Besides, they're punctual, courteous and their prices are reasonable.

Unusual activity on our property. Near wolcott and greenleaf

last night 5:45 I pulled into our driveway and saw a Black Male, 6' medium build, athletic wearing a grey hoodie and dark jeans with a black backpack and a Black Female about 5'10 slender wearing a Pink jacket and Pink backpack and jeans near our back basement door. Not sure what they were doing but they fled out of our property out the front gate. Went west on greenleaf and north on wolcott.

  • IC1(SW) Iraq Veteran academic and social servant

Well I got somewhat of a good look at both of them. The male pulled his hoodie tight around his face. The female looked like a respectable high school student. Probably at any given time, they would look like high school students. I will recognize them if I see them again.

  • JohnL Retired old foggey.

With all these sightings..........maybe someone should call 9-1-1.

Gas fireplace repair

Pilot light is working on my gas fireplace but ventless logs won't ignite. Anyone know a person/place that comes out for this type of repair? Yelp doesn't have much. Thanks.

  • Betsy is right on the money. I experienced the same problem last year, and I wish I had known that I could have cleaned out the pipes myself. I had American Heritage do it, after several other companies either declined to service my fireplace model (the company went out of business a few years ago) or proved to be incompetent.

  • Greenforestfireplace@gmail.com
    1236 W Belmont Ave
    Chicago IL 60657
    (773) 348-9111

Was ALLtypes Fireplace - they install and service my gas logs - Alltypes was pretty knowledgeable - I assume this company that bought Alltypes are continuing the tradition.

Found Pre paid card

Hi Everyone,

Found a pre-paid Visa card on Winthrop just south of Hollywood this morning, 10/22.

Hopefully it is a card that was used up and carelessly tossed on the ground. (I could not get in touch with customer service via the number on the back, as I obviously don't have the appropriate pin number).

Was going to shred it, but in the off chance it has someone's living expenses on it, wanted to check here first.

So if it is yours, email with the last 4 digits and I'll get it back to you.

2:30 AM on 10/13

I was woken up at 2:30 in the morning on Monday 10/13 to the sound of a women screaming for help. I live on a high floor in a high rise and sadly was not able to do anything. It sounded like she was near Berwyn and Kenmore area. I did see several cops flood the area a few minutes later. Does anyone know what happened?

  • So I just saw this post in the crime reports, I wonder if this is what I heard:

Robbery: Strongarm: no weapon / Sidewalk
    5200 block N. Kenmore Ave. October 13, 2014 @ 2:30 a.m.

  • Ricky Coogin North Andersonville

I wish there were more details about these crimes.

Whole Foods on Broadway

Hello!

I see that they are making great progress at the Whole Foods on Broadway and Glenlake, they have the whole store gutted.

Does anyone one know if they are still on track to open in Early 2015? I have not heard anything from the Alderman's Office.

  • What does that have to do with Whole Foods? Get out of here!

  • ERussell Edgewater resident and dog owner

    Wowwwwww. Simmer down.

Peter, there was a recent community meeting. It looks like April of 2015. They did get a liquor license, so there will be the new usual pub/grill type stuff there. I wish it would open sooner, too! No more drives, however short, to Evanston to shop there.

TV Repair

Does anyone know of a TV repair shop that works on (and has parts for) older, picture tube model TV's? I have an older Sharp TV that I really like - but the picture tube finally gave out. I'd like have it repaired, even though I know I could easily buy a new TV, probably for what it will cost to repair it. I already have several newer, flat screen TV's, but this one's my favorite. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Prefer someone in the Edgewater/Andersonville, Rogers Park area, but I'm willing to venture out of the neighborhood for someone reputable.

  • Aram- Minas TV & Video owner- Edgewater neighbor for 44 years

Feel free to call anytime 773-764-0726 to discuss details, we are open everyday.

  • I have been a Minus customer for many years. Totally honest and fair!!!

Seeking Painter Referrals

I'm looking for referrals for painters (at a reasonable price) for a 1,900sf condo in Edgewater. Ideally, I'd like to start with a high-level estimate on the phone if possible.

  • I used Green Tree Painting last year for a similarly sized condo and was very happy with them -- high work quality, nice folks and didn't leave a mess: http://www.greentreepaintingdesign.com/

  • Tad1232000 Edgewater Transplant

What ever you do don't use Bill Baker at Happy Home Repair, you won't be happy. He skipped out without finishing the job and broke a radiator in the process. Rather than helping to solve the problem he just skipped out and almost had to get the police involved to resolve when he wouldn't give the keys back. What ever you do realize you get what you pay for. He did have cheap prices, but it showed in his lack of professionalism.

We were putting our groceries into our car when a man came up & started loading our vehicle for us & then demanded/requested some money for the "service" also stating that he would return the basket to the store. Of course, I don't have any cash money on me & declined his request. I hope this does not become a common occurance. I should have called the store to complain I suppose.

I wish people in Andersonville would stop giving money to the homeless. I know people feel sorry for them, but there are plenty of social services; giving them money just invites them to set up permanent camp in our neighborhood. The one I'm thinking of specifically used to hang out by the eastern wall of Jewel and beg for money; when he got enough, he'd go buy beer and drink it right out on the sidewalk (making sure to leave the empty beer can on the ground even though there's a garbage can 20 feet away). I talked to him once and he told me he had a permanent place to stay, and not a shelter, either.

He seems to have migrated south a few blocks since the summer...now he sits in front of the market around Balmoral/Clark.

  • A polite No Thank You always works for me.

Teacher looking for nanny share or home daycare in Edgewater/Andersonville

I'll be heading back to work in January, and I'm trying to find childcare for my daughter, who will be 4 months old. I'd love to find either a nearby family who would be interested in a nanny share, or a reliable in-home daycare. I work as a teacher, so ideally we are looking for care from January to June with the plan on continuing in the fall when the school year resumes. Please comment if you're interested.

    Hi Maibu Pat,
I loved Pilates Chicago. It's on Morse in Rogers Park just west of Sheridan. The people there are incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, down to earth and affordable. They were a tremendous help when I broke my knee several years ago-not only got my body working better than any physical therapist I had previously but also gave me the confidence to realize that I could do way more with my body to get it working in new ways than I thought possible-beyond just the knee issue. Matt and Jen are terrific! Check them out.

Bunny-proof fencing materials needed

Hi,

I have an edible garden plot that I'd like to protect from bunnies and other critters. Does anyone have extra fencing material that they don't need or something that can be repurposed for a fence, like pet gates/baby gates or wire shelving? The garden plot is 8ft x 4fx, so I don't need a lot of material. I know to check thrift stores and have posted on Freecycle.

Thanks!

  • chrisfinn bornagain chicagoan

I don't have any material for you but, back a few years ago we lived in a very small town & had a problem with skunks. Instead of letting a co-worker get rid of them we tried the following. We blew up & filled balloons with water and placed them densely in the area affected. Believe it or not it did send the skunks on their way, I know how this sounds but sometimes simple crazy solutions work.

  • Catherine Animal Care Giver and Personal Organizer

I don't think water balloons will work in my case, but that's an interesting story on how to scare away skunks without getting sprayed.
