Halloween in Edgewater Glen?

So I keep reading about how Edgewater Glen does a great Trick or Treat event every year, but can't find street names-anyone know what streets they are?

Also is it safe? It's dark out there so debating if I should take my daughter out around here.

  • No we can't agree we are Racist.

Let me make this clear: what I was railing about in the first place was the phenomenon of ADULTS trick-or-treating for THEMSELVES...and for their significant others, who for whatever reason didn’t accompany them. Let me make this clear: what I was railing about in the first place was the phenomenon of ADULTS trick-or-treating for THEMSELVES...and for their significant others, who for whatever reason didn’t accompany them. Trick-or-treating has always been for the kids--whichever arbitrary age limit (within the teens) one chooses to define the term. I saw plenty of young adults out tonight with their babies and toddlers--in arms, in strollers--trick-or-treating and holding the pumpkin or goody bag. I’m fine with that. Given tonight's horrendous weather, I’m fine with lack of any semblance of a disguise (we were all dressed as potential frostbite victims anyway), and also with having to commute by car to my block. I salute everyone--kids, parents, siblings, caregivers, neighbors--who braved the wind and cold to keep alive the traditional joy of Halloween. I stood out on my porch till well past 8pm, when the last piece of my 20# of candy was gone (and I’m still trying to warm up).

But I am not fine with lack of courtesy and consideration--I’m sure there were some children after 8:15 who didn’t get their candy from me because young adults got there earlier. Each year there are fewer “thank you”s unless a parent is there to remind them to say it. And there were the couple of kids who, instead of saying “thank you” or “Happy Halloween,” looked into the bowl of candy and declared “I want that one instead. I don’t like this kind” (e.g, the brand I gave them). It was all I could do to keep from answering “this isn’t a restaurant, it’s Halloween.” (And for all I know, they might well be neighborhood kids).

But all you kids and parents who WERE gracious and polite? Thank YOU, you’re welcome, Happy Halloween and see you next year--same Bat time, same Bat channel.

A Man in Dire "Need" Depends on the Kindness of "Neighbors"

A friend noted that he did this to him during the summer near Amundsen High School. Yesterday, he was at Bryn Mawr and Ravenswood. On 10/29, a middle-aged, African-American man showed me an inhaler needed for his daughter's asthma. She needed help right away. He displayed $7 in cash, but he needs $10. He has three daughters and lives a block away. Anyway you can help? Please give. And God bless you.

I never give panhandlers anything period. They are all scammers and freeloaders and if you figure out how many people do give them money then they are collecting enough in a week than some low income job earners make in a week. I was approached by this sick child/inhaler years ago in the old walgreens parking lot and told him to NO. There is now a guy that begs in front of the new Walgreens alone and sometimes with children. If I go there three times a week he is out there. These guys go back to the same place because they are collecting money so why leave a good area because the people change every day.

The reason I quoted my friend was to indicate what hazelg said...the panhandlers are scammers.

There are plenty of shelters in the area, and plenty of food pantries. At Care for Real, you can just go in and get food...they don't check anything. None of these people are starving...in fact, you go in Saturday morning to CFR and at least a third of them are fat.

I used to get angry when ppl would say, "Oh, the homeless like being on the street...they don't want a job." How dare they say that! How dare they presume anyone would rather beg than work for a living!

Well...I spent two years living with roommates and a brief period being homeless (at Pacific Garden). And yes, they have no shame about bilking you out of money...instead, they consider you fools and think of themselves as smart for getting people to fall for their sob stories. Yes, most of them are drunks/druggies...during the 90-minute break between dinner and the obligatory 90-minute sermon before bedtime, the PGM guys would go to Dominick's, pool their money, buy a magnum of vodka, and chug it straight out by the loading dock because they knew that at worst, the shelter would make them sleep on a mat on the floor in a separate room. They don't want jobs...they want just enough money to buy booze/drugs and maybe pay whatever rent they have to. They get food from Link or pantries.

I got into an argument with a former resident of my building when I asked him politely not to give money to the bum who used to sit on the east wall of Jewel. He told me it was "our duty to help those less fortunate" and that "it's not my business if they spend the money I give them on alcohol." He later borrowed $70 from me - which I foolishly gave him since I know what it's like to be broke and how even $10 or $20 can make a difference - and then he moved out of the building (meaning he left the couch he was sleeping on and skipped out on rent he owed to the real tenant).

There were notices left on the doors of neighborhood residents from the 48th Ward’s office requesting attendance so the community could provide input and ask […]

Troubles With FedEx Packages, Anyone Else?

According to tracking, it was delivered and signed for, although no attempt was made to contact my husband or I upon its arrival. I left a note for my neighbors to ask if anyone signed for it to please come forward (the name FedEx says was on the signature did not match any of our residents) and a neighbor came forward to say the same thing happened to her. Same day, same time delivery, also no contact made and package was not received. We called FedEx who says they can't find the driver of that route and that we're basically on our own. Anyone else having trouble getting their packages from them recently?

Much thanks!

It happened to us as well about two months ago. My son works from home and was waiting for a package that never appeared. He called UPS and they claim they delivered it but had to "talk to the driver first". He waited (2) weeks for the call back that never came. Called again and got the run around. We don't know if the package was stolen by the driver or if he left it outside and someone came along and picked it up or is just lost in the UPS system. He got a replacement but drove to the UPS distribution center to pick it up rather than take the chance on the driver.

I spent 20 minutes last week on the phone with UPS because the driver had left a package in our foyer that had the right street number on it but should have been delivered to that address on Winona, not on Argyle, which is where it was left. I told them I would just walk it over but I wasn't sure if I would be able to get it inside that person's entryway. I also wanted UPS to know it had happened. They insisted on having the driver come back for it--which was just as inconvenient for me as walking it over would have been but at least correct recipient probably eventually got her delivery from Piper Lime.

I work for a company that sends hundreds of UPS packages out every week, mostly without incident, but sometimes they do screw up. Fed Ex is actually quite a bit worse when it comes to errors and sloppiness, like not bothering to make second delivery attempts, etc.

I believe when you move you are require to update your drivers license within a certain length of time. This is an official document for identification. Only if you're a CDL driver do you have to get it actually replaced, otherwise you just have to notify them of the new address; the Chicago police themselves often don't know this, though. I've been told twice by two different cops my license was invalid. The beat cop in 24 (a real d'khead) gave me a ticket for something unrelated, because I challenged him on this fact, in fact. And it turns out, he's wrong. His ticket was also bogus and thrown out.

'How do I get my license and registration corrected if my name or address changes?
Within 10 days of changing your name or address, you must notify the Secretary of State by visiting a Driver Services facility or by writing to the Driver Services Department, Central Services, 2701 S. Dirksen Parkway, Springfield, Illinois 62723. If you wish to have a new driver's license reflecting the change, you must visit a driver facility and pay a $5 fee. To change your address, you can use the online Address Change Notification to transmit notification of address changes to the Driver Services Department. Please be sure to include your Driver's License or Identification Card number and registration number. A change of name for driver's license or ID card must be completed at a Driver Services facility. A CDL holder must obtain a corrected driver's license within 30 days of any such change.'

Is this typical now?

I was walking on Bryn Mawr/Winthrop near the 7-11 and there was a Chicago police officer standing up against the building near the door with an assault rifle. There was no obvious criminal activity occurring and there was no armored truck picking up cash from a business there. Is this normal now for the police to stand on the street with assault rifles? I like the police presence, but unless it's a SWAT raid, why in the hell do they need assault rifles? Maybe it's silly to be more concerned about an assault rifle than a standard police revolver, but I found it very unsettling.

DK, it doesn't really matter the situation or how fast the officer thinks. 5.56 is a powerful, high velocity round, its going to keep going after it hits someone and will likely still have enough force to go through a wall. Stray rounds are going to be a nightmare. Any of the standard handguns CPD carries are going to have 15+ rounds in the magazine and aren't going to be nearly as likely to injure bystanders in a busy, densely populated urban area. No cop has any business carrying a rifle unless he's going into a situation where he knows a suspect is going to have body armor, its just irresponsible.

Lets hope this idiot doesn't run into a situation where he needs to "think fast" because someone is going to get hurt and then the city is going to lose a lawsuit.

  • William,
You make a lot of assumptions. You don't know his/her training, skill, experience, load and caliber, etc. in light of attacks on military and police, their job is even more dangerous. Plus, to call them idiots make you sound idiotic.

Lost Cat

Please help me find my missing cat! I had to give her to an acquaintance due to having to move. Her new home was on North Kenmore. Please share/bump/ask your friends/neighbors. I currently live in Elgin and am driving down to check the shelters but am having absolutely no luck. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated...

  • My neighbor saw a cat that looked like yours on our back porch on October 1st. I assume yours has not been missing that long? We're near Howard & Sheridan, which would be pretty far for her to travel. In addition to the shelters, contact any neighborhood vets and groomers as they might hear about strays also. Best of luck! Will keep a lookout.

They're good for "floor people" -- I would never use an online search to find this type of work in Chicago. He did an amazing job, I'll see if I can find his #. It was the only part of my reno I GCed myself and my own GC wanted to hire him for other jobs. That was somewhere around 160-175 SF and the demo work was done and I did the sub-floor. The "clear grade" (no knots in wood, and possibly longer boards themselves) was $1-2 more /SF than standard grade that most use these days.

Though I guess that's 8.ish SF so maybe it's not terrible given you have demo work and sub-floors. It just sounds like a lot. You're sure your joists themselves are OK too?
