Edgewater Theaters Produce Work for the Visually Impaired: Steep’s “The Vandal”

Whole Foods on Broadway

Hello!

I see that they are making great progress at the Whole Foods on Broadway and Glenlake, they have the whole store gutted.

Does anyone one know if they are still on track to open in Early 2015? I have not heard anything from the Alderman's Office.

  • What does that have to do with Whole Foods? Get out of here!

  • ERussell Edgewater resident and dog owner

    Wowwwwww. Simmer down.

Peter, there was a recent community meeting. It looks like April of 2015. They did get a liquor license, so there will be the new usual pub/grill type stuff there. I wish it would open sooner, too! No more drives, however short, to Evanston to shop there.

TV Repair

Does anyone know of a TV repair shop that works on (and has parts for) older, picture tube model TV's? I have an older Sharp TV that I really like - but the picture tube finally gave out. I'd like have it repaired, even though I know I could easily buy a new TV, probably for what it will cost to repair it. I already have several newer, flat screen TV's, but this one's my favorite. Any recommendations would be appreciated. Prefer someone in the Edgewater/Andersonville, Rogers Park area, but I'm willing to venture out of the neighborhood for someone reputable.

Feel free to call anytime 773-764-0726 to discuss details, we are open everyday.

Seeking Painter Referrals

I'm looking for referrals for painters (at a reasonable price) for a 1,900sf condo in Edgewater. Ideally, I'd like to start with a high-level estimate on the phone if possible.

  • I used Green Tree Painting last year for a similarly sized condo and was very happy with them -- high work quality, nice folks and didn't leave a mess: http://www.greentreepaintingdesign.com/

  • Tad1232000 Edgewater Transplant

What ever you do don't use Bill Baker at Happy Home Repair, you won't be happy. He skipped out without finishing the job and broke a radiator in the process. Rather than helping to solve the problem he just skipped out and almost had to get the police involved to resolve when he wouldn't give the keys back. What ever you do realize you get what you pay for. He did have cheap prices, but it showed in his lack of professionalism.

We were putting our groceries into our car when a man came up & started loading our vehicle for us & then demanded/requested some money for the "service" also stating that he would return the basket to the store. Of course, I don't have any cash money on me & declined his request. I hope this does not become a common occurance. I should have called the store to complain I suppose.

I wish people in Andersonville would stop giving money to the homeless. I know people feel sorry for them, but there are plenty of social services; giving them money just invites them to set up permanent camp in our neighborhood. The one I'm thinking of specifically used to hang out by the eastern wall of Jewel and beg for money; when he got enough, he'd go buy beer and drink it right out on the sidewalk (making sure to leave the empty beer can on the ground even though there's a garbage can 20 feet away). I talked to him once and he told me he had a permanent place to stay, and not a shelter, either.

He seems to have migrated south a few blocks since the summer...now he sits in front of the market around Balmoral/Clark.

  • A polite No Thank You always works for me.

Teacher looking for nanny share or home daycare in Edgewater/Andersonville

I'll be heading back to work in January, and I'm trying to find childcare for my daughter, who will be 4 months old. I'd love to find either a nearby family who would be interested in a nanny share, or a reliable in-home daycare. I work as a teacher, so ideally we are looking for care from January to June with the plan on continuing in the fall when the school year resumes. Please comment if you're interested.

Bunny-proof fencing materials needed

Hi,

I have an edible garden plot that I'd like to protect from bunnies and other critters. Does anyone have extra fencing material that they don't need or something that can be repurposed for a fence, like pet gates/baby gates or wire shelving? The garden plot is 8ft x 4fx, so I don't need a lot of material. I know to check thrift stores and have posted on Freecycle.

Thanks!

  • chrisfinn bornagain chicagoan

I don't have any material for you but, back a few years ago we lived in a very small town & had a problem with skunks. Instead of letting a co-worker get rid of them we tried the following. We blew up & filled balloons with water and placed them densely in the area affected. Believe it or not it did send the skunks on their way, I know how this sounds but sometimes simple crazy solutions work.

  • Catherine Animal Care Giver and Personal Organizer

I don't think water balloons will work in my case, but that's an interesting story on how to scare away skunks without getting sprayed.

Bathroom remodeling

Hi, everyone! I live in Edgewater, and am going to be remodeling my bathroom (new flooring, vanity, mirror, backsplash tile). Could anyone recommend someone who has done a great job on such a remodel at a reasonable price? If they have insight as to designing (which tiles/flooring would look best), that would be a plus! Thanks so much in advance.

Hello Carrie Allen, I also have somebody who would be great at remodeling your bathroom. He just finished a $48m job in Bucktown remodeling a kitchen working on installing new cabinets, rewiring electricity, plumbing, backsplash and duct work. He is currently finishing up plumbing and backsplash work on my own kitchen. He has a vast knowledge on what designs work well with each other. He has a great resume book that he would love to show you and he is very fair as far as pricing goes. His name is Michael Kampwirth and his mobile number is 708.351.5300. Timing is great because, like I said, he is just finishing up his project for me and he will be available to work on any size project that you may have. Good luck and I hope you give him a try.

I wish I knew where this horrible "do nothing and don't get involved" attitude came into being. Your story, while tragic, rings an all-too-familiar bell in our heads. A phone call to the police would have the appropriate response. One, under NO circumstances, can sit idly by while someone is being murdered. I'm not saying that one should try to stop it themselves, but a call to the police at least makes them fell that they've "done something" to help someone. Truly, I can't understand why any human being can take such a detached attitude.
It's tragically the "new normal" in many people's psyches. They don't want to get involved because they feel as though they are placing their own safety in peril, which they're not if all they're doing is calling the police. Just my feelings on the subject. We must all try to protect each other in our community.

Anyone open to having their faith in humanity challenged by the Kitty Genovese case should first read up on it. Several neighbors called the police. There were not 38 people who witnessed the attack in its entirety, as portrayed in the initial articles (written by someone with an agenda) and the sensational made-for-TV movie. There were people who heard or saw parts of it and some of them called the police, which at the time were dismissive to emergency calls. Also, the 911 dispatch that we have in place today did not exist 50 years ago.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Kitty_Genovese

The one thing people in Chicago should know is, always call 911 if you think a crime is taking place. The police want you to call 911 (not 311) for crimes in progress (even if it's just someone tagging a building or acting suspiciously), and this is what beat cops will tell you at a CAPS meeting. 311 is for potholes and burned out street lights.

Convenience Stores on Granville

There is apparently two opening up, one of them in the former Royale Cupcakes place. We have around 4-5 as it is in that section of Granville-do we really need MORE covenience stores? I know it's better than empty storefronts but still. I don't get it.

One thing at least they put a nice awning to make it more appealing. But the lottery kiosk near the window makes it tacky.

  • hazelg Longtime Edgewater resident

This is a new location for an old convenience store that was located next door to the el station and had closed up. Evidently they had a profitable business on Granville before or they would not have come back to re-establish their business. They were the most popular convenience store of all of them. I can see why they came back as I patronized them almost daily and they were always busy. I don't see how the rest of the stores survive though.

  • DK Living and Playing in Chicago

They put huge "play lottery here!" signs all over their windows, disappointing that they don't try to make it more appealing at least. I never understood why that would look attractive.

I know for Revival they had a community meeting about it,not sure if there was one for this store.

Airplane noise: Emanuel rakes in campaign donations from airplane execs

Money talks. Just in case anyone thought the Mayor's selling out of Chicago residents to the big airlines (on all manner of issues, airplane noise being just one of them) had stalled with all his lip service about "looking into the issue," here comes the news that airplane execs -- most of whom don't live in the city (no surprise) -- have shelled out big cash to Emanuel's campaign chest. No strings attached, though (yeah, sure).

I tried using this guy twice too, and won't in the future. While he did an ok job of fixing the stitching on my bf's shoes, he charged me $10 to fix the sole. He seemed to only add a little glue, which needless to say didn't last long. Chicago Market

Just picked up a brochure about Chicago Market, a new food co-op concept. My family is considering this but don't know much about it. Anyone doing co-op and how is it? I would lov to consume items knowing they are from a local farm. Thanks!

  • ZZ

I belong to a coop in Madison, Wisconsin and love it. I shop there whenever I drive to Wisconsin. Prices aren't much cheaper then Wholefoods but the quality of the food is noticeably better. Many more organics and local produce. Usually coops from different regions work together, which I assume this new one will. There used to be food coops in Chicago decades ago but they were all pushed out or bought out by Wholefoods. I've been waiting years for a coop to start up again in Chicago.
