A Man in Dire "Need" Depends on the Kindness of "Neighbors"

A friend noted that he did this to him during the summer near Amundsen High School. Yesterday, he was at Bryn Mawr and Ravenswood. On 10/29, a middle-aged, African-American man showed me an inhaler needed for his daughter's asthma. She needed help right away. He displayed $7 in cash, but he needs $10. He has three daughters and lives a block away. Anyway you can help? Please give. And God bless you.

  • Same guy got me a couple years ago. My husband nearly died of an asthma attack, so I gave him $2 which was all I had. I figured out it was a scam two days later when he was in the exact same location trying again. Felt stupid, but justified it by telling myself I was a good person at heart.

  • ScottK Near Glenwood/Devon in North Edgewater

I think it's completely reasonable to adopt a personal policy of not handing out cash on the street -- and instead contributing as generously as possible to a social-services operation that truly and demonstrably helps people in need. The first one that comes to mind is the Chicago Food Depository. Or a local church's grocery giveaway program (Church of the Ascension, La Salle & Elm Street, does one on the first Saturday of the month at noon...helps upwards of 200 people each time).

Halloween in Edgewater Glen?

So I keep reading about how Edgewater Glen does a great Trick or Treat event every year, but can't find street names-anyone know what streets they are?

Also is it safe? It's dark out there so debating if I should take my daughter out around here.

Troubles With FedEx Packages, Anyone Else?

Hey Neighbors,

Hey Neighbors,

I live at the corner of Lakewood and Elmwood, and last week was supposed to receive two packages from FedEx. The first one was delivered, but left outside my building - not even in the foyer and our buzzer was not pressed. The next was not delivered. According to tracking, it was delivered and signed for, although no attempt was made to contact my husband or I upon its arrival. I left a note for my neighbors to ask if anyone signed for it to please come forward (the name FedEx says was on the signature did not match any of our residents) and a neighbor came forward to say the same thing happened to her. Same day, same time delivery, also no contact made and package was not received. We called FedEx who says they can't find the driver of that route and that we're basically on our own. Anyone else having trouble getting their packages from them recently?

Much thanks!

It happened to us as well about two months ago. My son works from home and was waiting for a package that never appeared. He called UPS and they claim they delivered it but had to "talk to the driver first". He waited (2) weeks for the call back that never came. Called again and got the run around. We don't know if the package was stolen by the driver or if he left it outside and someone came along and picked it up or is just lost in the UPS system. He got a replacement but drove to the UPS distribution center to pick it up rather than take the chance on the driver.

Mis-deliveries happen, too. I spent 20 minutes last week on the phone with UPS because the driver had left a package in our foyer that had the right street number on it but should have been delivered to that address on Winona, not on Argyle, which is where it was left. I told them I would just walk it over but I wasn't sure if I would be able to get it inside that person's entryway. I also wanted UPS to know it had happened. They insisted on having the driver come back for it--which was just as inconvenient for me as walking it over would have been but at least correct recipient probably eventually got her delivery from Piper Lime.

I work for a company that sends hundreds of UPS packages out every week, mostly without incident, but sometimes they do screw up. Fed Ex is actually quite a bit worse when it comes to errors and sloppiness, like not bothering to make second delivery attempts, etc.

Ready to get your inner ghoul out this Halloween? Here are a few local haunts to get you started right. In Edgewater, the most famous haunting is probably the sadly closed Old Saint Andrews Inn. Rebecca Eden - I found your license. If you send your birthday as verification of identity, I'd be happy to get it back to you.

I believe when you move you are require to update your drivers license within a certain length of time. This is an official document for identification. I know a lot of people don't, but if you were involved in an accident or other event , notifying next of kin or other designated persons would be delayed

Only if you're a CDL driver do you have to get it actually replaced, otherwise you just have to notify them of the new address; the Chicago police themselves often don't know this, though. I've been told twice by two different cops my license was invalid. The beat cop in 24 (a real d'khead) gave me a ticket for something unrelated, because I challenged him on this fact, in fact. And it turns out, he's wrong. His ticket was also bogus and thrown out.

'How do I get my license and registration corrected if my name or address changes?
Within 10 days of changing your name or address, you must notify the Secretary of State by visiting a Driver Services facility or by writing to the Driver Services Department, Central Services, 2701 S. Dirksen Parkway, Springfield, Illinois 62723. If you wish to have a new driver's license reflecting the change, you must visit a driver facility and pay a $5 fee. To change your address, you can use the online Address Change Notification to transmit notification of address changes to the Driver Services Department. Please be sure to include your Driver's License or Identification Card number and registration number. A change of name for driver's license or ID card must be completed at a Driver Services facility. A CDL holder must obtain a corrected driver's license within 30 days of any such change.'

Is this typical now?

I was walking on Bryn Mawr/Winthrop near the 7-11 and there was a Chicago police officer standing up against the building near the door with an assault rifle. There was no obvious criminal activity occurring and there was no armored truck picking up cash from a business there. Is this normal now for the police to stand on the street with assault rifles? I like the police presence, but unless it's a SWAT raid, why in the hell do they need assault rifles? Maybe it's silly to be more concerned about an assault rifle than a standard police revolver, but I found it very unsettling.

DK, it doesn't really matter the situation or how fast the officer thinks. 5.56 is a powerful, high velocity round, its going to keep going after it hits someone and will likely still have enough force to go through a wall. Stray rounds are going to be a nightmare. Any of the standard handguns CPD carries are going to have 15+ rounds in the magazine and aren't going to be nearly as likely to injure bystanders in a busy, densely populated urban area. No cop has any business carrying a rifle unless he's going into a situation where he knows a suspect is going to have body armor, its just irresponsible.

Lets hope this idiot doesn't run into a situation where he needs to "think fast" because someone is going to get hurt and then the city is going to lose a lawsuit.

  • William,
You make a lot of assumptions. You don't know his/her training, skill, experience, load and caliber, etc. in light of attacks on military and police, their job is even more dangerous. Plus, to call them idiots make you sound idiotic.

Lost Cat

Please help me find my missing cat! I had to give her to an acquaintance due to having to move. Her new home was on North Kenmore. Please share/bump/ask your friends/neighbors. I currently live in Elgin and am driving down to check the shelters but am having absolutely no luck. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated...

-Julia

  • My neighbor saw a cat that looked like yours on our back porch on October 1st. I assume yours has not been missing that long? We're near Howard & Sheridan, which would be pretty far for her to travel. In addition to the shelters, contact any neighborhood vets and groomers as they might hear about strays also. Best of luck! Will keep a lookout.

Zoe has been missing since October 17th. I've called all the shelters. Hope she turns up soon. Thank you all!

a guy named Edwardo who didn't speak English, I txted him back and forth and his son would transpose... do you know any real estate agents? They're good for "floor people" -- I would never use an online search to find this type of work in Chicago. He did an amazing job, I'll see if I can find his #. It was the only part of my reno I GCed myself and my own GC wanted to hire him for other jobs. That was somewhere around 160-175 SF and the demo work was done and I did the sub-floor. The "clear grade" (no knots in wood, and possibly longer boards themselves) was $1-2 more /SF than standard grade that most use these days.

Though I guess that's 8.ish SF so maybe it's not terrible given you have demo work and sub-floors. It just sounds like a lot. You're sure your joists themselves are OK too?

Unusual activity on our property. Near wolcott and greenleaf

last night 5:45 I pulled into our driveway and saw a Black Male, 6' medium build, athletic wearing a grey hoodie and dark jeans with a black backpack and a Black Female about 5'10 slender wearing a Pink jacket and Pink backpack and jeans near our back basement door. Not sure what they were doing but they fled out of our property out the front gate. Went west on greenleaf and north on wolcott.
