ComEd Door-to-Door People

This evening, two guys in suits claiming to be from Integrys rang our doorbell to talk to us about a recent change that might be affecting our ComEd bill. They said they were checking for overcharges and that only they could fix it. We told them that now wasn't a good time, but after checking our bill later, we did see potentially what they were talking about. Has anyone else in the neighborhood seen these guys? In person they seemed pretty legit, even though I've heard of plenty of scams that follow a similar routine. This was in the vicinity of Magnolia and Devon.
Thanks in advance.

Maybe our alderman could institute a "door to door" permit that the sales person would have to purchase at the alderman's office to do business in our ward. The alderman's office could also collect the sales person's ID and confirm their employment at whatever the business is. If anyone is caught going door to door w/o this permit, they are subject to arrest.

The door to door salesperson may have a right to conduct business but WE have a right to know if they are who they say they are. Enough is enough. Just an idea...

What the guy that came to your door was doing was probably using a pitch that he had to learn. The reason they would say you're being over charged is to get you to grab your bill to see if there rate is better. A lot if third party suppliers would do this...well the kids that they send out to do it. The reason they use these kids is because they work off commission and will only get paid if you sign up with them. So they would say and try everything to get you to one open your door and two try and get you to go with there electrical supplier. While some are good and some are bad the best way to check is to go on cub.org. There you can get a great understanding of the rates for different suppliers. When it comes to d2d Chicago doesn't have a policy on it, so will probably get a ton of suppliers coming to your door...unless you have a no solicitation sign on your door...and if they still bother you then you have the right to call the police, and the marketing company and the solicitor would be issued a ticket for unlawful solicitation.

But it all comes down to...if you want a cheaper electric bill find a good fixed rate and/or monitor your electric usage.

Sifu Design Studio Facing Closure

Per Sifu: "Due to a shifty accountant, back taxes and fines have threatened to close our store. We had a payment plan worked out, but now the IRS said we have 10 days to pay our outstanding balance.

So, on July 26, the IRS is threatening to revoke our business license and close us down. We are trying to get an extention, but we can't rest knowing that the end could be so near."

They're trying to raise emergency funding HERE:

Parking on Thorndale in Tow Zone

What is going on on Thorndale with cars parking in the tow zone between Winthrop and Kenmore? It's mainly happening on the weekends and most are probably going to the beach and avoiding the meters. Why are these cars not getting tickets?

  • d3 NOH

    pics or it didn't happen!

  • Helen North of Howard for 50 + years

I'm a little confused here. HC asks why the illegally parked cars aren't getting ticketed. Then when s/he's told how to get the cars ticketed, s/he doesn't want to do it. Perhaps Robin's method works. Personally, I would call 911 like d3 does.

Edgewater shooting

5200 block of North Kenmore. Tonight. About 10 pm. Guy shot on sidewalk. Chicago has become a shooting gallery -- cops & pols do little. Time for a change.

  • We need more cops on the beat, who stay in the district.

They're still full force with traffic enforcement--no we can't reassign resources to fight this violent crime, we have tickets to issue at non-peak times!

Need someone to put in wood floor and tile

I'm looking for someone to put in hardwood and tile floor, approx 200 SF total. I'd really like someone that could do both. Any good people you can recommend? Thank you!

  • Thanks, I appreciate the info. It's nice to have neighbors give referrals :)

  • We had a very good experience with Gaby (Transylvania Flooring). He did a complete replacement of hardwood floor on the first floor and will be coming back for the second floor. Reasonably priced and very knowledgeable, but I am not sure if he does tile. 773-396-1991

Was There a Shooting on the 5200 block of N Kenmore?

Walked my dog around 10:45 pm and N Kenmore was blocked off to foot and vehicle traffic. Several police cars with lights flashing and officers looking for what I am assuming were shell casings. A bystander told me there was a shooting. Does anyone else know what happened?

Where to replace mortise lock keys

We have an old house that has mortise locks. We do not have enough keys. Does anyone know who can replace keys for this lock? I tried Devon & Clark hardware, but they couldn't.

One of the keys has "Collier Lock" stamped on it. Does anyone know if they still have a storefront? Yelp lists it as 6142 N Clark, but that is a residential building.

Missing Cat

I read somewhere that missing cats are often nearby hiding under a porch, in a garage or other secure location.. It said even totally domesticated cats revert to a wild mentality and fail to respond to familiar voices calling them or even food. It's some sort of primitive instinctual behavior. It stressed the importance of doing thorough checks of such spaces. Don't give up. I had a cat that was missing for 6 weeks once and was found by a neighbor who spotted an old weather notice we'd posted. He seemed almost ferrel but eventually reverted to his old lovable self. Good luck!

Women And Children First Bookstore Sold, Mission Remains.

Locally owned bookstores have been on the decline. Technology and the digital world have become their competition. With readers buying digital publications from Amazon for their Kindles and iPads, bookstores have had to change their business model to keep their doors open. It isn’t easy for independent bookstores to thrive, let alone maintain a full staff.

Yard Work etc. Paying $15/hr

It's been impossible to find someone to help a senior (me) around the house for occasional yard work, basement cleaning and the like. I went on craigslist and the person i got stole money and medication. I have no lawn, it's a garden, so i need someone who knows a weed from a flower and can do some lifting. A 12 year old won't be able to handle it.Its not a bad gig. I pay $15/hour so kind of expect a good job. Help!
