At Least One Pedestrian Dead, Others Injured After 5335 Sheridan Accident

Reports are still a bit unclear, but witnesses say a red Ford was trying to get around a bus heading North at 5335 North Sheridan avenue around 11:12 a.m. this morning. Somehow the red vehicle did not make it around the bus and instead plowed into  two-three parked cars at a high rate of speed […]

Yup they seem to attempt to squeeze down into one at Balmoral, but there's no sign indicating that. However, right in front of Wing Ho, you can see in Google Street view that there are actually dotted center lines which would otherwise indicate it's two northbound lanes. But, it's also a 4-6pm no parking rush zone designed to drive in during those periods, which actually is unusual to have also a lane marked as dotted down the center alongside also a rush hour no parking zone. I can think of 2 dozen rush hour driving / no parking streets where they have the same configuration of one intended driving lane and one tpyically parking lane, but they've left off the dotted lines to indicate two driving lanes in all of those cases. In this case it seems they are indicating there are always 2 driving lanes, and the rush hour parking no parking is re designed to accommodate that by reducing cars.. A few there would be easy for 2 cars to navigate, but at rush hour, no. They seem to be saying you can drive it as 2 all day, but it would be more difficult when cars are parked there AND traffic is heavy. There is no signage or markings indicating you need to go from 2 lanes to one.

I'm sure some lawyer already is snapping pics of this illy marked street as we speak. Hopefully the speeding camera tickets in the name of pedestrian safety is enough to cover this lawsuit against the city. Then maybe someone at the city will grow up and realize how to actually improve pedestrian safety and not their bottom line.

There are many places where the arterial streets are very poorly marked in Edgewater. On Southbound Broadway, for example, it seems like the markings fade in and out all the way from Devon to Ardmore. Seriously, please be careful out there. Also, I'm not sure of they've changed the configuration but northbound Broadway near Argyle, there never seemed to be enough room for parked cars and traffic in the right lane, even though there is (or used to be) a dotted marking indicating two northbound lanes.

I can't recall from last year -- can we bring lawn chairs? Would come in handy if we're going to hang out and listen to the music.

New EHS Exhibit Showcases Edgewater’s Automotive Glory Days

It is hard to believe, but back in the 1920s Edgewater was such a hub for the Chicago automotive industry that it was dubbed “The Northside Motor Row”.  Now,  a new exhibit which opened July 12th at the Edgewater Historical Society and Museum tackles the past showcasing photographs, artifacts and maps that help us get […]

I saw the exhibit for the first time this past weekend. It's really a fabulous exhibit with artifacts covering nearly every wall and also a slideshow of old automobile ads. If you're at all interested in old cars or Edgewater history, you should try to see it. It's free, but the museum is only open on weekends from 1-4 p.m.

About three months ago I posted a link to a fire-insurance map (PDF) showing the businesses on both sides of Broadway between Foster and Devon in 1928. That l-o-n-g map is stretched across a wall in the exhibit and the large number of automobile-related businesses are color-coded to identify the type of business.

Oh. I almost forgot the link to the map. Go to the "maps" page on the Edgewater Historical Society website (http://www.edgewaterhistory.org/ehs/local/maps). The "1928 Sanborn map of Broadway" PDF link is about halfway down the page.

Is the 40th Ward doing participatory budgeting?

So I'm reading all these articles about the participatory budgeting process in nearby wards -- some are holding votes, some conducting online surveys, some holding public meetings -- and I'm realizing that I've never heard a single word about PB from Ald. Patrick O'Connor, who ganked my Lincoln Square block in the redistricting. Is O'Connor even doing PB in the 40th?

Huge Police Presence

Does anyone know why there were numerous police cars and officers on the 6200 block of North Wayne Ave. and in the alley behind this block?

  • Sandy in EdgeGlen EdgeGlen since 1987

Makes absolutely no sense to reroute buses for EdgeFest this weekend instead of during the actual festival weekend--did CTA decide it needed a 4-hr dress rehearsal? And I’m glad neither of our cars were parked on the street, or they might have gotten dinged. (Ever try filing any kind of damage claim against the CTA? Hahahaha....). Anyway, the CTA website site mentions “Granville” and “Sheridan,” not Glenlake, Hood, Norwood or Elmdale. And it was only yesterday. Totally illogical.

Lost Cat?

I saw a small cat running about in the large garden of 5555 N. Sheridan Road while I was walking tonight about 10 p.m. I think it was dark colored and not completely wild because it stopped and looked at me when I called "kitty, kitty." I hate to see a cat out in the park (we are right next to Lincoln Park) since there are coyotes around.

Indeed, Edgewater needed a good place for pork. Hopefully, this team can finally make a success of this hulk at Edgewater and Clark, which has struggled for such a long, long time. And, speaking of the North end of Clark, the Norse is a great bar with an incredibly good beer selection. There really is good news from all parts of Edgewater, from the Andersonville neighborhood on the west to the Edgewater Glen business district along Broadway on the East side of Edgewater there has been a steady stream of good economic news of late.

  • Sandy in EdgeGlen EdgeGlen since 1987

That location has been “snakebit” ever since Felice’s Roundtable closed (Lord, how I miss that prime rib!) in the late ‘90s. Every restaurant since then in that space had been AWFUL and few lasted even a year. Hope Pork Shoppe “clicks;” won’t have to go NW to Rub or take the long slow slog down Pulaski to Smoque. And unlike Hecky’s (which won’t deliver s. of Devon), it’ll be nice to actually be able to sit and dine there!

ComEd Door-to-Door People

This evening, two guys in suits claiming to be from Integrys rang our doorbell to talk to us about a recent change that might be affecting our ComEd bill. They said they were checking for overcharges and that only they could fix it. We told them that now wasn't a good time, but after checking our bill later, we did see potentially what they were talking about. Has anyone else in the neighborhood seen these guys? In person they seemed pretty legit, even though I've heard of plenty of scams that follow a similar routine. This was in the vicinity of Magnolia and Devon.
Thanks in advance.

  • I've seen these people but they identified themselves as Spark Energy.

Just google Spark Energy scam or Chicago Energy Provider Scam and this stuff will be on Everyblock or google at the top of the list.
