What Can I Do?

I Have Called 24th District On Several Occasions About My Down Stairs Neighbor Having The Building Smell Like Marijuana. I Explain That There Is Kids And Families Who Live In The Building. 24th District Always Tells Me Somebody Will Be There In 15 Minutes & No One Ever Shows Up. It Occasionally Smells Like They Are Smoking & Growing It. And They Still Do Nothing! I Wanted To Know What Else I Could Do In Order To Get Someone Here When There Is A Arroma Of Marijuana In The Air.

  • Julia, it's also obnoxious when a miserable old woman keeps misreading my replies on an online community forum but I still sleep at night. Like I said, if you have a problem with pot users, then you're going to hate the future.

  • One last suggestion...If you don't want to move, fork over about $200 and buy them a vaporizer. There will be no smoke and you won't smell a thing.

Home Remodeling Referrals

Hi-
I'm seeking a recycle place where I can buy 2 1/4" wide (probably oak) wood flooring to install in my kitchen to match the original throughout the rest of my 1920's co-op.
Also, does anybody know a good precision tile installer of large (25 1/4" x 12 1/2") rectified tile? It has super smooth edges that butt together with a tiny grout line. I'm using it for a new kitchen countertop.
Thx!

There's a place in Evanston that kinda like restore?

  • d3 NOH

http://evanstonrebuildingwarehouse.org/ is the place; stopped in a few weeks ago. IDK--a lot of stuff at these places seems overpriced to me but... sometimes there are deals, too. Like rebuilder's exchange, you can also donate old fixtures/building supplies/etc. for tax donation.

M Henrietta

Restaurant now closed. Look forward to Revival- a new restaurant which will serve all day, Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. A real improvement. M Henrietta was a real neighborhood disappointment when they stopped serving dinner. Welcome Revival - I hope someone knows when they will open.

  • Thanks for posting this. I was just there on Sat and had no idea! Called to confirm and the guy said they were made an offer to sell the place that they couldn't refuse.

  • M Henrietta never owned the building - they had a lease and - the owner still owns the business and signed a new lease with Revival.

Walking Dogs Off Leash in NW Edgewater Glen

There seems to be a little upsurge in this along/around Glenwood, Rosemont, and Wayne.
A neighbor mentioned that she's having difficulty walking her dog who is leash aggressive because they are often surprised by dogs trotting down the street half a block or so ahead of their owners. I haven't had this experience recently, but I usually try to walk my dog when other people aren't out with theirs because mine is a rescue who is terrified by strangers.

Thoughts? Observations?

  • Call the Police, all dogs are required to be leashed.

  • Korin Ravenswood Dweller

"Hey there, neighbor, would you mind please leashing your dog? It would be most appreciated" - is it too idealistic to think we could say these kinds of things to each other without a fist fight breaking out? We've lost something in our society if we can't deal with each other directly before calling in the authorities.

Bike Stolen from Garage

Hey all... just a heads up that our bike (red Fuji) was stolen this past weekend from our garage (Ardmore / Glenwood) The bike was hung on a rack and secured with a bike lock which they simply cut - and nicely left at the scene. Oddly, nothing else in the garage was taken.
Just a heads up that stolen bikes seem to be on the rise in our hood.

Bus to Andersonville?

There are two bus stops on Granville but I get confused (don't ask why) which side I need to be on to take the bus to Andersonville. One stop is in front of the Ann Sathers place and then there is one bus stop in front of CVS. Both off of Granville and Broadway.

Which stop should I wait at to go to Andersonville? Thank you in advanced.

  • DK Living and Playing in Chicago

    *i'll

  • If you're starting at the CVS on Broadway (especially with a toddler), I recommend taking the #36 (Broadway) bus to Foster and then the #92 (Foster) bus to Clark. The Swedish American Museum is near the NE corner of Foster and Clark.

Hello all. As a high school kid I liked running every now and then. I liked the heart pumping feeling while enjoying the view of Lake Michigan. I grew up in my home at Broadway and Granville, from where I would run to the Lake Trail that begins around Thorndale and jog all the way down to Belmont Ave.
A couple years after H.S (Senn High School) an idea of running a Marathon floated around in my head but it never was strong enough and I had other priorities. Several years passed and in 2013 I ran the Chicago Half Marathon. After that, I decided to run the full Bank Of America Chicago Marathon in 2014.
One growing desire that I've had is to get involved with Animal Welfare. I love animals, I think they have a lot of love to give and they bring joy to many people. They are also unfortunately the most vulnerable to becoming victims and suffer neglect, abuse, cruelty, etc. They cant defend themselves but there are many people and organizations that stand up for them and bring them happiness. One of those organizations is The Anti-Cruelty Society. They help over 50,000 animals and people every year through its many efforts. They have been around for more than 100 years. I know multiple people who have adopted from them and now have loving 4 legged companions. They always organize wonderful events to raise money and awareness (many of which me and my pet have enjoyed), like doggy street parades, 5K's, Canine Cruises among many others.

I decided that running on behalf of The Anti-Cruelty Society is the perfect way for me to add a little block to the building of a more happy community of animals and people.

I have a goal of raising $1000. Please check out my page: http://tinyurl.com/o8plx6u
No donation is too small, and it will go a long way in helping our tail wagging friends.
If you cant donate money, please share this page with someone who might be able to contribute. We also accept words of support and good vibes.

Thank You.

sounds like Bark in the Park would be a perfect fit for you.....pledge page & all....next year's event is May 2, 2015 at Montrose Beach.

  • Thanks Brandon. My current fundraising ends a week before the Marathon. October 5.
I did partcipate in Bark in the Park this year and plan to go every year.

Snow Removal

Does anyone know of a reliable snow removal service for a small 6 unit condo building?

  • id recommend SGS. they are local rogers park guys and provide excellent service. they have several trucks and drivers so they are reliable and fair with their pricing.
you can contact Frank (773) 807-1528 or Mike (773) 406-4267.

  • I Had To Say It Reality does not equal negativity.

Maybe ask your neighbors who they use? I often wondered why one company (or only a few) can't do it all in one-fell-swoop rather than converge like a helicopter raid as the various leaf blower ninjas do on a beautiful Summer morning. Maybe they'd offer a large group discount if the neighbors all got together (?).

Beware: IRS telephone scam

Thankfully I have not been called but know many in the DC area who have.

The idiot could barely speak english and had to repeat the word IRS repeatedly before I could figure out what he was saying. The IRS,as well as any other civic, state or federal entity will never call looking for info.

I got the same call but in a voicemail message, where they threatened me with legal action if I did not get back to them. I knew it was a scam and looked up the number and followed up some suggested links to report it to the FTC. I reported the call to the FTC. Someone else on the FTC comments section they have for this particular IRS scam said the number was provided by a certain communications company. I wrote to the company on their website detailing the exact report language I had given to the FTC and they said I would no longer get calls from that number. It was a 202 DC area code.

Employment for high school students

I'm a high school teacher working closely with Juniors and Seniors this year (16-18 year olds) and am hoping to help them find after school jobs. Though we've only known each other for a little over two weeks, I've been incredibly impressed by the maturity of my students and the potential they have. Many of their families are in need of financial support, and these students are hoping to help (and hopefully develop skills and an employment history that will help them in the long run).

Could anyone advise of places that might be hiring this season or in the near future? I'd be happy to write detailed and honest recommendations on their behalf.

  • Thank you all for your suggestions. I'll look into the public library and Chicago parks. Also, thank you JeffHinkson, I'll ask for more information if any of my students are interested/qualified.

If anything else comes up, please let me know.
