so now you can not tell me i am always negative towards this store...

  • Sandy, the new Cermak on Ridge has the full line of household products that you'd find in any large grocery store. What sets it apart is its huge range of international food products--eastern European, Asian, Latin American, etc--and its enormous and varied selection of national and international produce, meats and baked goods. I've never seen anything quite like it. It's in nice shape, renovation-wise.

I also like - if I'm in the area - Pete's Produce, a different company, with 2 stores on west 87th street.

Then there's Cermak Fresh Market (don't you just love "fresh" in all of these names), with 8 stores in Chicago and others in the 'burbs and Milwaukee.

I know about these lesser known markets because I used to live in Little Village (and shopped at the 22nd street Cermak) and I also wander the city a lot, just exploring. Bottom line, I'm a Trader Joe's and Aldi girl.

And folks, I discovered the BEST line of natural cleaners at Mariano's - A Better Life. All plant-based. There's a product called 2 AM Miracle to clean up baby-barf, etc. Well, it works wonders on cat-barf, too!

ISO of Uber/Lyft Feedback

Hi

I have never taken an Uber or a Lyft. I have been hearing a lot of not so good things about UBER and when I search online read eben more negatives..including being overcharged, not getting Uber credits, some scary drivers etc. I haven't read or heard too much about Lyft..wondering what your experiences have been. Should I even try them or just stick to cabs?

  • I love Uber. I have only had great experiences, much contrary to the experiences I have had with traditional cab companies where I have experienced drunken drives, speed demons, broken seats and seat belts, lack of air conditioning, heavy perfumes, and once a man who kept his face covered whenever we neared an intersection. Uber now and forever! And, I always tell the driver exactly what route I want them to use rather than relying on their faulty GPS.

  • Never had problems. Uber is dominate in Chicago and you will find more cars. However I try to use lyft if there are cars around. Like others have said, lyft drivers seem to be better but I will say that because of lyft more lax car policy it will probably...

Like others have said, lyft drivers seem to be better but I will say that because of lyft more lax car policy it will probably be an older car. I don't want to get into a flame war about uber and writing my distaste for the company (not drivers) would be a very long post. I will say it simply. Uber (not the drivers) is evil. Try to use lyft if you can. Everyone praising uber will be sorry when they get a stronger monopoly (which by the looks will happen)

Looking for local motorcycle shop I can trust

I have a Triumph and the nearest dealer is in the suburbs. Can anyone recommend a trustworthy motorcycle service shop in Chicago?

  • My husband just took his motorcycle to ACME Cycle at Belmont and Cicero. His bike has never run better, and they even found a potential brake issue he didn't know he had. Apparently they have a really good mechanic there that's been around Chicago for a long time.

  • HarleyGrrl Why YES! People actually DO live on Clark St!

I have taken the metrics to Motorcycle Mania - liked it better when John from South Africa was there - but good shop- they get super busy so you have to stay on them. Motorwerks is good too. There is also a group trying to start a place where you can work on your own bikes and use their lifts etc - not sure they are up and running yet - they were on the meetup groups talking about it

Canine Flu Hits Edgewater, Hospitalizes Some Dogs And Closes Local Rescue

Now considered an “epidemic,” the new strain of canine influenza that started spreading rapidly in mid-March has caused many dog owners to fear for their pets’ health. Canine flu is a highly contagious respiratory infection that is caused by an influenza A virus. The canine influenza virus (CIV) is very similar to the virus that causes equine influenza. […]

Pepper Egg Sandwiches

I was wondering if any one might know, where I can order a great Pepper Egg on either French bread or Italian Bread sandwich. With the option of cheese and green hot peppers. I've looked in the places were we order from but none seem to have this on their menus. Maybe I have been looking in the wrong places. Would anyone know where I could get this kind of sandwich out there in Edgewater Community?? Thanks

  • Maria de la Rosa-Young, North Park Gardener and coffee lover

Try Susie's Drive Thru, 4126 W Montrose, they have several egg sandwiches on French Bread. They will add cheese at your request. Menu online.

  • Thank you Maria ;), yes I realize that particular sandwich is meant for Lent, on some days Phil L. It's nice to have one of those Just because one is in the mood for one, with fries. Lol. Thank you both. Sure would have loved to get right here in Edgewater or some where close by. God bless you both. And thanks again. ;)

My dog had his eye injured and will now require surgery. Unfortunately my son just rushed my dog to the vet because he was bleeding and crying and did not get contact info for owner of grey dog that attacked my dog. If anyone knows who this person is please call 773-251-0328. And please do not leave your dog unleashed. It is against the law! The dog that attacked my dog was significantly larger than my yorkie.

Possibly, he may just offer to pay the medical bills and take responsibility for his dogs actions. If he becomes hostile, I would call the police. If you are able to get in contact with the owner of this dog and he is a homeowner, I believe his homeowners insurance could Cover your dogs medical bills. I'm not really sure, so that is something you may have to look into. My other suggestion would be to contact a lawyer. I am really sorry about your dog.

Roommate Robbed at Gunpoint - April 10

I don't think CPD has updated their ClearMap/Crime incident reports yet, but last week, early Friday morning between 12:30 am and 1 am my roommate was robbed at gunpoint at the corner of N Hermitage and W Hollywood. Two latino men -- one of whom was carrying a very large pistol/revolver -- flanked him as he was walking back from the Jewel on Ashland/Bryn Mawr. They took his keys, phone, and wallet, but thankfully left him physically unharmed. He believes they followed him from the grocery store and simply waited to strike. Very unfortunate.

I have made similar small-grocery runs at this Jewel at later times in the night and have never felt unsafe, but going forward I'll either drive or carry minimal things. I still feel very safe in this neighborhood and in most places I've lived in Chicago, but after years of living here free of these types of incidents, I often forget that no place in Chicago is truly safe.

  • Nan - Fortunately the address on his drivers license was an old address, but the landlord changed the locks anyway.

Bellaisteps - Not that I know of. Crime seemed rogue/opportunistic. I have since seen a few more police cars/SUVs than I normally do around Bryn Mawr/Hermitage but this is purely anecdotal and maybe coincidental.

  • Nan

Glad the landlord changed the locks. It's usually very easy to find someone's address online.....

WARNING Dog Flu Epidemic, Spread By Dog-to-Dog Contact

I haven't seen this topic talked about on EB yet, so I'm posting about it.

In short :
- dog flu can be deadly and very contagious
- unless you recently got the dog flu vaccine, your dog is unlikely to have been vaccinated against it and is at risk (The bordetella vaccine doesn't fully protect from dog flu.)
- until your dog is vaccinated, the best protection is to keep your dog away from other dogs in all situations, regardless of whether or not the other dog appears sick
- dog flu only affects dogs

And since cats are now susceptible, please keep them indoors till the epidemic fades out (or the right H3N2 vax is developed and you can find a visiting vet to administer it to your kitty). Looks like I'll have to keep enduring getting mauled by my younger cat whenever it's "pet-icure" time--had been hoping to take him to Bark Bark for that. He's the first unbribable cat I've ever had--all the others offered no resistance when I offered catnip or cat-treats as a reward. And since humans can be a vector, don't pet strays, ferals, or even friends' cats allowed outdoors.

Engaging History of Mansions Along Sheridan Road

If any of you are architectural history buffs, as I am, this may be of interest to you. Too many mansions were torn down along Sheridan, but quite a few remain as property of Loyola, or the City. See:

http://www.cityofchicago.org/content/dam/city/depts/zlup/Historic_Preservation/Publications/Sheridan_Road_Mansions.pdf

It's a fascinating report.

  • Thanks for posting this. I live on Sheridan Rd. This report looks incredibly interesting!

  • Thank you, thank you, thank you for posting this. I especially enjoyed the newspaper clippings regarding the construction of the high rises. I am so glad these buildings were saved and am thankful for the community members who worked hard to that end.

Looking for some thoughts on this. The other day I was going east on W Hollywood and when I got to N Glenwood, I stopped to take a left on to N Glenwood - which at this point is one way heading northbound. As I pulled out a biker was going southbound - against the traffic and I almost hit him. Even though he was breaking the law, it really wouldn't have mattered because I really don't want to hurt anyone.

So I got to thinking and the problem is that a lot of bikers use Glenwood but the issue is that when heading southbound at Ridge, they have to make a decision - ride on Ridge where there is no room or go the wrong way on Glenwood. I wonder if we shouldn't have a southbound bike lane from Ridge to Edgewater Ave on Glenwood and then direct the southbound bikers to take a right and go over to Clark (sort of like the bike lane on Ardmore at the end of the lake front trail). Anyone have an idea on how to make it safer for everyone?

  • john early ave resident for 10+ years

Hey - wanted to share what I received from the alderman's office.

    Hi John,
Yes, we have been working with CDOT regarding a dedicated bike lane on Glenwood.
There will be a bigger community meeting held in the near future and I'll make sure you are invited.
As of today, no date has been set yet.
    Thanks,
