Kenmore Shooting Victim’s Identity Released

It was a beautiful Monday evening last night on the 5200 block of Kenmore Ave as some neighbor’s gathered with friends on a deck for dinner, some senior citizens gathered in their outdoor courtyard to chat and 20+ children finished a day at Epworth church’s shelter. That all ended around 10p.m. with a very horrific shooting that left […]

Parking on Thorndale in Tow Zone

What is going on on Thorndale with cars parking in the tow zone between Winthrop and Kenmore? It's mainly happening on the weekends and most are probably going to the beach and avoiding the meters. Why are these cars not getting tickets?

  • d3 NOH

@Rogerparker, why is this block a tow zone?

Edgewater shooting

5200 block of North Kenmore. Tonight. About 10 pm. Guy shot on sidewalk. Chicago has become a shooting gallery -- cops & pols do little. Time for a change.

I can't speak to the two incidents you reference, but of all the people who can be doing more I'm still not sure the State's Attorney's office is the main offender here. The police are the ones who make arrests and file charges, not the SAO.

The State's Attorney felony review department does approve felony charges, but if the police don't provide enough evidence to make the charge stick OR if they do but the case is weak, it goes through two levels of court before it even gets to felony trial where it can be thrown out or flat out lost b/c the opposing attorney or public defender sees the holes in the case. The hundreds of Assistant SAO's handle an extremely high number of cases, and work hard to prosecute them successfully. Do they win every case? No. Can all of our law enforcement officials and politicians continue to do more to manage crime? Absolutely.

Rather than pointing fingers let's start by as a community getting the information needed to the police so they can actually arrest people. I don't know much about Alderman Moore, but Osterman is my Alderman and I see and hear how aware and active he is in these matters. That said, he is an Alderman not a superhero. The 20th district commander is new and clearly we need more police coverage and possibly more gang intel on the ground to be on top of these things before they happen, but who has secret radar to do that with certainty? Every witness who doesn't talk, every person who doesn't follow up with information when provided the means to do so that makes this harder. All of this happens well before the SAO get involved. I'm not an SAO, but know many who are and it can be debated whether Anita is the best leader of that office, but to call them out as a key obstacle to fixing things seems to miss a few important steps in solving this problem.

  • vb urban explorer

I've heard Anita's office referred to as a "catch and release" pond. That might not be a fair assessment, but the perception is that charges are dropped for the smallest of reasons.

Was There a Shooting on the 5200 block of N Kenmore?

Walked my dog around 10:45 pm and N Kenmore was blocked off to foot and vehicle traffic. Several police cars with lights flashing and officers looking for what I am assuming were shell casings. A bystander told me there was a shooting. Does anyone else know what happened?

Where to replace mortise lock keys

We have an old house that has mortise locks. We do not have enough keys. Does anyone know who can replace keys for this lock? I tried Devon & Clark hardware, but they couldn't.

One of the keys has "Collier Lock" stamped on it. Does anyone know if they still have a storefront? Yelp lists it as 6142 N Clark, but that is a residential building.

Missing Cat

I read somewhere that missing cats are often nearby hiding under a porch, in a garage or other secure location.. It said even totally domesticated cats revert to a wild mentality and fail to respond to familiar voices calling them or even food. It's some sort of primitive instinctual behavior. It stressed the importance of doing thorough checks of such spaces. Don't give up. I had a cat that was missing for 6 weeks once and was found by a neighbor who spotted an old weather notice we'd posted. He seemed almost ferrel but eventually reverted to his old lovable self. Good luck!

Women And Children First Bookstore Sold, Mission Remains.

Locally owned bookstores have been on the decline. Technology and the digital world have become their competition. With readers buying digital publications from Amazon for their Kindles and iPads, bookstores have had to change their business model to keep their doors open. It isn’t easy for independent bookstores to thrive, let alone maintain a full staff.

Know No Limits almost certain to remain open

Word has it that the gym will remain open under new management. This is from a very reliable source. The gym will be owned by Reza, the restaurant guy. I've never heard a positive thing about this man so hopefully he doesn't ruin the place. My understanding is that he is going to likely replace the entire staff with his own team.

    2) In response to Lisa: I'm generall confused by folks who refuse to pass judgement on people based solely on the fact that the person's action haven't directly affected them or their loved ones. I'm going to list some major douchbags whose actions didn't directly affect me but we all consider them dicks:

    The king from Braveheart
    Timothy McVeigh
    Lex Luther
    Cruela DeVille
    Bin Laden

The six-fingered dude from The Princess Bride who killed Inego Montoya's dad (sp?)

36 bus surrounded by cop cars

Anyone know what happened on the 36 (Broadway) CTA bus at Foster and Broadway around 9 pm on Tuesday night? It was surrounded by 4 cop cars with lights on and looked to be someone in handcuffs in front. That route is always an interesting one, but seems like someone went over the line of the usual insanity on it.
