Cable outage

Does anyone have any information about the ComCast cable outage in Edgewater? They're probably talking about it on the news, but since there's no cable.... ;-)

  • jenna! love is the law

Did you check your router, Michelle? Try a reset

  • MichelleB in Edgewater New Chicago resident

Jenna - I did try that and then looked on the ComCast website and there is an outage reported. They just don't give any further information and I was on hold 17 minutes with no answer so I was hoping someone else had gotten through. Internet and phone are working fine--just the TV is out. Thanks though!

Marty’s Martini Bar Anticipated Expansion Canceled

With a die-hard following of cocktail lovers, Marty’s Martini Bar at 1511 W Balmoral Ave. has been filling up glasses with spirits for ten years now. The narrow bar has a charm of its own with a very intimate setting. However, the small space can get very crowded as the ever-growing number of patrons come in to celebrate. Over the last year […]

  • So Sorry to hear about this... we anticipated the expansion and redo. We have often stayed away just because of the uncomfortable atmosphere. Who wants to pay a higher price for a cocktail only to be shoved and bounce around and not able to hear the friends you came in. I think they missed an opportunity to improve the atmosphere and not to chase customers away.

Many sirens at Granville and Sheridan

Anyone know what's going on? Sheridan is closed northbound; 147 bus rerouted.

  • Teri Cassidy edgewater beach resident

I live in the building and I posted on this site as the fire was happening. My post never appeared. The fire was on 23rd floor. It started on a pile of clothing. It was put out quickly.

  • Next time get it right Teri!!! People were in panic not knowing what the hell was going on. This is just unacceptable!!

Hi, my apartment lease ends April 30th and would like to rent an affordable large 1+ den or 2 bedroom for me, my son, and cat. I would like to stay in the Edgewater/Andersonville area. I'd be open to Limcoln Square. Does anyone know of any apartments available or coming available end of April?

Loud BOOM sounds last night around 4am

I'm on Ravenswood, across from the Rosehill Cemetery entrance, and was awakened by a super loud BOOM around 3 - 4am last night (2/22-23). Sounded like a transformer blowing. Strange thing is, this has been happening a lot lately--loud booming sounds in the middle of the night. Caused by cold?? Anyone else hearing this? Maybe it's just me. :) Thanks!

Yesterday’s voting proved to be an interesting one as area politicians worked hard to gain the support needed to win their election bids. Notary public

Hi, all. I'm looking for a notary public who can notarize a bank document. I know many banks have notaries, but my bank is a regional one that has no offices here. Are there any banks in the area maybe that would notarize a document for someone who isn't a client? Or other options? Looking for advice. Thanks in advance.

  • Any currency exchange has a notary public!

  • Hi, all. Thanks for the suggestions; ended up using UPS because there's a location next to my office.

Amy- thanks for the offer anyway! I'll keep it in mind if anything else arrises!

Red Light & Speed Cameras

I think what is still interesting is that when they speak of revenue, most people don't know that only 10-20% of the actual ticket goes to the City itself. The rest goes to the company that owns and maintains the cameras. This is true for any municipality as I received one once in the suburbs. When I was paying I spoke to the city clerk (much easier in a small suburb to do so) and she informed me of this. I was able to pay a little less but she said because the company takes so much the city still needed to get something.

So in short, we are funding a company more than we are funding the City.

Thoughts?

I would be curious about how much is actually getting back to the City. I agree with Les in that I have seen people become more stressed when approaching by how they behave. There's either more of slamming on the breaks or accelerating at a much higher rate than they normally would to avoid a ticket. If there was no camera I could see people still possibly accelerating but not at such a rate that puts more at risk.

What is interesting also is that you never hear the truth behind them. It's statistics and you can play with them all you want to make them look good for your cause. I've heard from one Alderman who's against the cameras (speed particularly) where they mention the City avoids the topic of the kangaroo affect. Where everyone slows down for the cameras and then immediately hits the gas, sometimes going faster than what they would have through the area in the first place, to catch up for time lost slowing in that camera zone.

    Did find this though:
A study commissioned by the Chicago Tribune concluded that the city's red-light cameras had failed to deliver the significant benefits claimed by officials and were responsible for increases in some crashes that caused injuries. Chicago has 350 cameras, and its program has generated more than $500 million in fines since 2002.

In New Jersey, more than 15,000 tickets were voided this year because of a computer glitch. In 2012, the state suspended dozens of the cameras because of concerns that yellow lights were not properly timed to give drivers time to brake safely.

What's interesting is the disparity between Legislatures. Remember our cameras were purposely put below government yellow light safety standards.

HMO in network Dentist?

Hi. I have a HMO dental plan so I want to stay in network. I looked for providers in my area and am wondering if anyone has gone to any of these dentists? It is for my cleaning.
Dr. Reza Khoshnood from Clark Dental
Dr Tina Shroff from Devon Dental
Drs Danielle McCarron and Dhiraj Sharma from American Dental
Dr Mark Sawyer from Lake Shore Dental

Thank you!

  • I don't know about the other three, but avoid Khoshnood. He caused a lot of problems for me.

  • diana Life is short. Death is long. Act accordingly.

I like Dr. Tran at North Broadway Dental. He takes my HMO (Humana). Good luck.

  • Thanks Diana, but I have Cigna hmo and Dr Tran is not in network.
