Term Limits for Mayor

Next year is the mayoral election. In addition to voting for Mayor, I'd like it if Chicagoans were able to vote on whether or not there should be term limits for Mayor, like there are in other cities. Next year is the mayoral election. In addition to voting for Mayor, I'd like it if Chicagoans were able to vote on whether or not there should be term limits for Mayor, like there are in other cities. I'm thinking limiting the Mayor to three terms, consecutive or non-consecutive, sounds like a good number. Considering the power that the Mayor's office holds over the City Council, I think that it's important that we be able to change our Mayor if we're dissatisfied with him/her. Regular elections aren't enough, because it's extremely difficult to beat an incumbent. Just look at Mayor Daley.

Does anyone else like this idea? If so, what's needed to get this proposition on a city-wide ballot and to make it binding?

Anyone have an extra ironing board, toaster, or mandoline?

The "wanted" section of Freecycle doesn't get a lot of views, so I figured I'd post here.

I'm looking for a full size ironing board, cover, and/or pad.

For the toaster, it can have two or more slots for bread/bagels/etc.

The mandoline I'm looking for is the kind that you use to chop veggies, not play music with. :-)

Thanks!

Sandy, there is no wine bar - EdgevilleBuzz mentioned that in their preview story on the store: http://edgevillebuzz.com/news/marianos-fostersheridan-first-look

However, if there is a wine you want, they may be able to order it for you - I was in the Ravenswood Mariano's on Saturday and they promised to get 2 of my favorite bottles into the Edgewater store by today. Staff was incredibly friendly, called HQ and had an answer for me within minutes.

  • Sandy in EdgeGlen EdgeGlen since 1987

Thanks, Nora---but I don't generally buy wine by the bottle at supermarkets (and have more than enough on hand due to purchases at B'way Cellars wine dinners, gifts and subscription or online purchases from wineries). An on-premises wine bar is for me a place to have a glass and a nosh before shopping. I have no need to have one branch order me a bottle to pick up, whether there or elsewhere.

Foster Dog Beach Badly Deteriorating, Unsafe

Chicago is known for being an extremely dog friendly city. Take a walk along the lake and you are bound to pass several pet owners walking their dogs along the path or heading toward one of the dog beaches. Our city has over 20 dog parks, pet dedicated businesses, a few dog-friendly beaches, and many local shops that have water bowls outside (sometimes even treats!) for our loved furry friends. Chicago dog beach visits have steadily grown over the years, and the Foster dog beach as well as the Montrose-Wilson dog beach have had quite a bit of wear and tear. With limited up-keep and continued deterioration, are these beaches becoming too unsafe for dogs and their owners?

  • Edgewater Nora Agrees with Pink. Founder, Arka Pana Consulting.

Michelle and Rob, there's quite the discussion going on at EVB's facebook page on this topic (including a link to a change.org petition) - many residents have reported calling the Alderman's office only to be told there's no funding to fix the fence. Someone else suggested a private fundraiser but then others question why residents should have to pay private money for a public beach that it is the responsibility of the city to maintain. Might want to weigh in there, sign the petition and/or call the Alderman's office.

  • Budlong Woods neighbor Chicago girl for life

I know most of the dog parks are mainly supported by local neighborhood groups that kicked in at least half the costs to initially build the parks and then they do the upkeep and maintenance. MonDog - the group that supports Montrose Beach area regularly has clean up days and some small fundraisers. They put out some nice benches and a ramp. Other than emptying trash cans it doesn't seem like the city takes any other responsibility for them.

Mariano’s Foster/Sheridan First Look

It was a beautiful morning for a first look at the new Marianp’s Foster and Sheridan store. Edgeville Buzz was invited along with other community leaders to be the first to see what the store has planned for the neighborhood. It started with a few words from Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Alderman Harry Osterman and the man of the moment, Roundy’s CEO, Bob Mariano. The highlight of the speeches came when Lyle Allen of Care For Real received a $2500 check to help support his growing food pantry. Then after a quick ribbon cutting, people were anxious to set off on a tour of the new grocery store.

  • DK Living and Playing in Chicago

Great article! That is terrible that they aren't gonna have a wine bar or hold classes-a community like this would benefit for having classes. Did they say why? Either way I am super excited and may check it out if I have time tomarrow.

  • Edgewater Nora Agrees with Pink. Founder, Arka Pana Consulting.

DK, head a few blocks north to Independent Spirits and the owner will tell you everything you could possibly want to know about wine: http://edgevillebuzz.com/news/5-questions-scott-crestodina-independent-spirits-inc

  • DK Living and Playing in Chicago

I was more concerned they won't be holding community events. We could always use more places that holds events, we are definitely community oriented.

My brother helps lead one of the other locations, I will see if I can get him to tell Bob this.

Latest Community Violence In Edgewater, Mayor Speaks Out

Last weekend many families celebrated Easter, the final days of Passover, or enjoyed the last few days of their spring break. But others in the city of Chicago experienced great loss because of violent episodes in several neighborhoods, including our very own Edgewater. This last weekend was a violent one, with 9 people killed and 36 wounded between Friday evening and Sunday evening. Victims ranged from an 11-year-old-girl to a 46-year-old man. Shootings varied from a social media dispute, a homicide/suicide between husband and wife police officers, and multiple gang related shootings. In Edgewater, a 46 year-old man was shot on Saturday on the 1700 Block of West Rosehill Drive around 11:30 a.m. and taken to the hospital in critical condition. Other neighborhoods that experienced violence and shootings were Park Manor, Little Village, Pilsen, Longwood Manor, Avalon Park, Hermosa, Englewood, and Gresham. Regardless of what neighborhood you live in, we should all be alarmed about this level of violence.

  • DK Living and Playing in Chicago

I thought I read someone came up to him and shot him. Then again I am getting confused there is so many.

Does anyone know if the shooting on Rosehill last Saturday was a random act of violence or a dispute between the victim and assailant?

Suggestions on Outdoor Painters?

Hello, our building is currently lookinging for a company to paint the top gables on our 3-story building. We've gotten a few bids for this that are all quite expensive. The general consensus seems to be that the large expense is due to the need for a Cherry Picker in order to reach the high space. Does anyone know if there are any local companies that uses painters that can rappel off the roof? We used exterminators to patch a squirrel hole earlier this year and they easily rappelled off the roof. Any suggestions would be welcome! Thanks!

Then a somewhat comical scene ensued wherein each driver was trying to wave-on the other driver. They figured it out eventually and all the trucks went to the building on the SE corner of Magnolia and Bryn Mawr.

At first they piled out and some began to hook up hoses to the fire hydrant. There were about 20 guys standing on the sidewalk on Bryn Mawr. I also saw one in the alley talking to a guy who was on a top floor balcony. Then they seemed to abandon the fire hydrant and instead one truck raised its latter to the roof of the building. I moved on at that point.

Just thought I'd report what I saw. I didn't see any smoke or anything so I'm not sure what's going on.

An urgent care clinic would be great. Several years ago I slipped and fell on my ankle in a very painful way. I had the option of taking an ambulance, but knew that my insurance wouldn't cover it (and that I didn't really need it). Instead, I took a taxi to a walk-in medical center, got seen within the hour, and my insurance covered it.

I just hope this clinic takes insurance poor folks have, like Medicaid and County Care. That's one problem with the Take Care clinics at CVS and Walgreens. Last time I checked, they don't take either insurance.

Are you on Medicare/Medicaid and is a senior? Have you seen the new Seniors only doctors office located on 1541 W. Devon across from the hardware store? If not you need to, Oak Street Health is a very unique company taking on improving Older adults health by offering services that you won't find in many doctors offices. First they offer rides for seniors and as you can remember with all the crazy winter weather we had it was extremely difficult to get to your doctors appointments if you rely on the CTA to get around. Oak Street Health patients enjoyed being picked up and dropped off for their appointments. They also have a community room that all patients can come and enjoy anytime even if they just want to hangout and have coffee with friends. Plus they are able to enjoy many of the programs happening in the community room such as workouts, presentation on diabetes and other health related issues. I hope you really take a look at it if you or someone you know is a senior who is on Medicare.

  • I like the idea of the community room. Because social isolation is a detriment to health, especially of seniors. Conversely, having support of community can help them (and everyone) survive a health crisis. This shows that this company is thinking about more than just the medical factors in the health of their patients.

  • Oak Street Health we work closely with the hospitals that Nana Cross mentioned above in addition to Advocate and Resurrection Hospitals. With that being said, although we have admission privileges at these hospitals we are able to send you to whatever hospital you would like as long as your insurance would allow us. Hope this helps!

Does anyone know of a good, affordable company or individual that can do a full evaluation of a building - e.g. evaluating the roof, electrical, heating, and water systems, and overall condition of the common areas (inside and outside) of the building - not individual units? We're a relatively small condo association and we'd like to have one done and am having a hard time finding one. We've already looked on Yelp and contacted several places, either they dealt only with individual condo inspections, were not thorough enough, or didn't return phone calls. In the case of one of the most popular companies on Yelp's list, Domicile Consulting - they were very difficult to reach - by phone or through their website. Tried contacting them for months! When I finally got them, they promised to send a draft contract out and never did. Then when I tried calling them back to remind them, still never returned my calls. I would not say I'm difficult to deal with. At any rate, I would welcome any suggestions!

  • Ann - What is the purpose of the evaluation? The company/person that you seek to hire will probably vary depending on what you need. For example, do you need the building evaluated for real estate transaction purposes, fiscal planning or are there building condition issues that need to be addressed? Are you considering improving the building somehow - new windows, mechanical system, energy efficiency, etc.? Your answers will help determine the type of evaluation that is necessary and the correct professional for the evaluation.

  • Ann

    Good Questions Chad -
We want do some proactive planning because we have an older building that is in need of repairs and we want to determine the best ways to make these repairs, get cost estimates, and create a timeline for the repairs need to be made. We want, as much as possible, to avoid being caught by surprise with a huge special assessment and/or the boiler breaking down in the middle of the winter, for example.

Chicago’s Danztheatre Ensemble is in the midst of a month long performance series that utilizes performance, visual art, film, dance and contemporary movement to explore topics related to activism and  promote change in the world around us. Lucky for us, there is one more weekend of shows coming up starting on Friday April 18th and Saturday April 19th at Ebenezer Lutheran Church at 1650 W Foster. Chicago Danztheare is the current artist resident at Ebenezer Lutheran Church and the partnership has been great for both the church as well as the artists rehearsing and performing there.
