Shots Fired Saturday and Sunday

It's been a trip back to the bad old days this weekend in Uptown.  Don't know if the gangs are starting a new (senseless) chapter in their ongoing quest to snuff each other out, or if they've got spring fever, or if they think the police response will be reduced due to NATO being in town.  In any case, not fun for the rest of us.

Its the little things that matter...

Orange and white kitty - Waveland and Lake Shore Dr.?

All of a sudden I'm seeing a very beautiful cat prowling around in the "secret garden" behind the two Waveland 6 flats.
Heretofore this has been a "no predator" area where birds and other creatures could live in peace - now not so much.
Is this your cat? If so, if you insist on putting her/him out prowling (which can be dangerous as there may be toxins in the yards) please put a pop collar with a bell around his or her neck to give the birds, rabbits and squirrels a break.
Thanks very much.

  • It could be a lost cat or a stray that has moved into the area. You might want to check lost pets on craigslist.

Hey there, I have lived in the RP/Edgewater neighborhood for the last 5 years. Basically that means I am a few blocks south of Devon around Glenwood. That neighborhood is very nice, with several community gardens in walking distance, sufficient grocery stores (incl. natural grocery stores), and a few great restaurants like Uncommon Ground. The block I live on is generally pretty quiet.

Rogers Park undoubtedly has more to offer by way of cultural attractions and is a bit edgier, more interesting. However, there is more crime and ongoing gang problems that seem to be plaguing the area around Morse/Ashland (this feedback is from someone I know who lives in that area). Rent is likely a bit cheaper in RP as well.

Both can be near the lake if that's important to you. And both are accessible to transportation options like the Red Line and buses.

Hope this helps! Happy apartment hunting!

Cappleman assaulted while cleaning up bread crumbs

Sorry, I couldn't really come up with a comical title for this post, but figured I'd pass this article along.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/breaking/chi-police-woman-arrested-for-shoving-alderman-in-pigeon-dispute-20120518,0,384755.story?track=rss

Seems Cappleman saw a woman feeding the pigeons on Wilson, so when he came back and began sweeping them up she threw more bread crumbs on him and shoved him into the street before fleeing.

Police caught her later, again feeding the birds, and arrested her.

Frankly, I say good for Cappleman. Feeding the ducks is one thing, but feeding the pigeons just creates a mess.

Alderman Assaulted by Pigeon Lady

Alderman James Cappleman, who just celebrated one year in office Wednesday, was pelted with breadcrumbs by an Uptown resident, who is known throughout the community as the "Pigeon Lady".  According to the Chicago Tribune story, "A 59-year-old woman is accused of shoving an alderman she thought should have “better things to do’’ than sweeping up breadcrumbs she left for pigeons" in the 800 block of West Wilson around 2:30 yesterday afternoon.

Getting Channel 5.3 (In time for the Olympics)

So this may not seem like a very important question unless you don't have cable -like me- and want to watch the summer Olympics on 5.3 as well as channel 5.

Has anyone else noticed that 5.3 has been blacked-out for awhile? Is anyone else bummed that this means less coverage of everyone's favorite quadrennial sporting event?

Does everyone but me have cable?

Redline Traffic re: NATO

Is anyone else concerned with the combination of NATO protestors, cross-town classic attendees, and regular red line commuters making the el an unrideable sardine can of sorrow? Is the commute downtown going to be hell on Friday and Monday? Thoughts?

Columbia Student

New to Uptown

I just moved to the area and can't really decide if I like it or if I want to stay. I previously lived in South Loop and loved it down there. Here i always hear people yelling on the streets and I see it when I walk to the Wilson stop. I am a young female college student and don't know if I feel comfortable walking around by myself here (especially at night when I sometimes get home around 2am). I'm just looking for some advice or for some cool people to get to know since I don't know anyone around here or just any little tips you can give me. Thanks!

Hey Jaclyn, first off: WELCOME TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD! Now to your post: I wouldn't recommend being at the Wilson red line at 2 AM. If anything bad is ever going to happen it will likely happen at the red line at around that time. If you know that you're going to be late from a bar/ friend's house/ etc. strongly consider getting a taxi. Other than that, Uptown is quite safe.

The only crime here is gang-on-gang and the occasional theft.

I assume that you are not in a gang/ do not wear gang colors/ do not throw up "signs" at cars rolling by and thus you will not be noticed, let alone harassed, by any gangs.

Have you gone to the used bookstore 'Shake, Rattle & Read' yet? Have you checked out the restaurants on Argyle (Tank Noodle, Pho 777, etc.)? Check these out.

And my girlfriend and I are gonna be at the Uptown farmer's Market every week; we hope to see you (and everyone) there!

    Best!

  • Hi Jaclyn. I'm a Columbia student who's new to the area as well. Living by Sheridan and Lawrence. I like the area; it's a lot more diverse than the loop could ever dream to be, and I'm a fan of all the new food to try in the area. Already gotten around a bit, and it's been really great so far.

From "Off Limits" to I-Go In Six Months

The latest development with the four lots on the 4400 block of Clark is that they are now a parking lot for I-Go cars, and soliciting monthly parkers. There's a "For Sale" sign on the southernmost lot, which leads to a real estate listing that says that lot is priced for $199,000 and is one of four contiguous lots for sale. It mentions that the lots are in a TIF district and brags that they're across from the new BET Theater, which we appreciate.

Current street closure.

Does anyone know about the street closure on kenmore (4200-4300)? I'm wondering specifically if the alley under the el is blocked or not.

Loading loading

  • This just got posted about on the Uptown Update Facebook page as well. I live on this block and just got home from work...the block is totally open to traffic, looks as if nothing is going on. Is the closure just for construction during the day? Also, the alley is perfectly fine too, just drove back there!

Dog-Friendly Apartment Needed for June 1st

Neighbours,

I'm a responsible, reliable, professional tenant looking to move into a dog-friendly studio or 1 bedroom on June 1st. I currently live in a 2 bedroom in Ravenswood and I love the area, but I would also consider moving to Edgewater, Buena Park, Uptown or Andersonville. My dog is an older, large, potty-trained and well behaved mutt (not a pit mix).

I prefer to be contacted directly by owners or building managers and not brokers. I would also consider a sublet situation if there was a possibility to renew the lease.

Please get in touch!

Left High and Dry (Cleaner)

Sad to say that the dry cleaners who replaced Drive/International Cleaners on Lawrence, next to Dib, has vacated the premises.  A reader saw a truck removing all the laundry equipment last week, and although it's hard to see from this photo, the storefront is completely empty.  Hope to see it filled soon.

Ald. Cappleman On CAN-TV Tonight

It's been a while since we've posted anything about a politician appearing on CAN-TV (Chicago Access Network TV)!  Tonight Ald. James Cappleman will be appearing live at 7pm on "Political Forum" on  CANTV21.  You can watch it on TV, or online here.  Today is one year since Uptown got three new aldermen, so we're guessing there'll be some talk about a review of his first year.

Subsidized housing at Montrose Harbor

Does anyone know what can be done about the housing development at Montrose Harbor?

The residents except for retrieving free food do nothing but flutter and squack among themselves.

They have a beutiful waterfront view at taxpayer expense yet do nothing to upkeep the property.

Wher is the OUTRAGE!
