Secondly, for anyone who wants to educate themselves about the number of gangs in Chicago, who they are (down to photos, gang symbols, police district maps of where they are) you can take borrow the book through your local library:

http://www.wgntv.com/news/wgntv-where-the-gangs-are,0,2185751.story

For all those who really want to "get to know your neighbors", start here; because these gangs ARE here (though this book
has data through 2011 [copyright of 2012], I believe the district mapping isn't accurate, because it shows the Archer Heights area as having NO gang presence...Heh! NOT!

They ARE present, if not accounted for....as the still gang grafitti shows, the increasing organized crime shows, the rise of gold stores, tattoo parlors and now, pawn shops, shows-- what next, porn shops?). And if this data WAS accurate at the time, then we've really got to worry because gangs are blooming faster than the Spring flowers! Are gangs fighting for THIS turf or east AH? Are we going to have to see their formal presence on future maps of this area of the 23rd ward?

All the more reason to stay on top of the grafitti removal, keep up the police patrolling (and again, many thanks to the police for doing so!), and getting yourself involved as a community resident in reporting any grafitti, any suspicious activity you see. This can't be stated enough....

Response to SW Post on Zalewski Flyer

Joan,

In response to http://www.swchicagopost.com/2014/09/help-wanted-alderman-with-brains.html?m=1

You grow a back bone and show the flyer instead of your opinions and do what any good reporter would do and tell all the facts.

Zalewski is using tax money to feed his pockets.

You seem to stay idol when it comes to Zalewski.

Report on his bankruptcy, gambling addiction, and what a crappy Alderman he is.

You are not here to be pious, but to report all news,

For all those that have not seen the flyer it's attached.

  • If I recall, he also has/had cush comraderie with the CTA, and also, the then private contracting corporation that set up the infamous traffic cameras. Weren't these outfits also big donors to his re-election campaign last time?

  • Hammertime, first time i seen flier-well done.

DISASTER HOTLINE for the 23rdWard!

When a disaster strikes, people look for help and expect to get it from their elected officials. These past several months, we have faced cruel weather conditions where heavy rains and gusty winds left many residents with flooded basements, downed trees, damaged roofs, downed power lines and broken gas mains. Many of these conditions could be life threatening. People lost electricity, needed additional trash pick-ups, required prompt assistance to have sewers opened up, etc. It is unfortunate, that in 19...

It is unfortunate, that in 19 years of alderman Zalewski being in the office, residents have not gotten the assistance they deserve, but help is on the way.
If elected, I will create an aldermanic DISASTER HOTLINE with open phone lines, not just a recording, to assist and provide information to residents of the 23rd Ward. My aldermanic staff and I will answer phones from 6am till midnight during any emergency to provide answers, take requests and expedite outage repairs. The residents would be able to call my office to find out when electricity will be restored, downed trees cleaned up or how to get assistance in pumping water from their basements. These are issues the public deserves to be helped with. It is just the right thing to do when people need help.

Ms Goral, I like the idea of being able to report, access and receive timely information during a disaster but such services are generally available be it through Com-Ed, Chgo, FEMA, .... Having a clearing-house layer of mgmt that in my guess will say, 'call Com-ed,, heres the #" really does no good.

Rather, the community services I would like to see accessible during a disaster, are pretty much the same as during happy times, just tightened up a bit. e.g.,

    1. Mobility. Getting around on a bicycle could be convenient. Power and docking info may be out for DIVVY bicycle stations but let's take that chance. Next, striped bicycle lanes that the community is already used to and a bicycle shop or two along Archer.

    2. Gathering places with tables, maybe heat, water or something warm. Independently-owned cafe's up and down Archer from Pulaski to Harlem. Cafe's are also a great place to access wifi if necessary.

    3. Independent family-run restaurants. See cafes above.

    4. Things may be cheaper at big-chain hardware stores, but it's the walkable neighborhood hardware stores that will be needed. Highlight them now and increase their on-site staff so that there are plenty for repairing window panes, ....... A note on hardware stores. I find it difficult to walk into and stay in a hardware store that has on display especially right by the cash registers (for easy cary-out) all those lawn chemicals, sprays, weed killers, .... How does staff manage to breath Scott's poisons throughout the workday. Imo, a hardware store w/o forcing a customer to be exposed to lawn chemicals is greatly appreciated.

    5. One of the first things people do immediately post a disaster is wander the streets. See Mobility and Cafes above.

But why focus on disaster. Rather, let's focus on quality of life. See bicycles and cafes above.

Was that you I saw at the Divvy station on Michigan & Oak?

If Mrs. Goral will implement such an idea as a local emergency contact center, what is the harm to have a more localized reach for such information? I myself would prefer getting a real person on the line locally, to provide needed information, instead of getting an automated response, an operator in Khazakhstan, a continous busy signal, or one of the all-time worst-- 'elevator musack' on a scratchy tape loop!

Seriously, this often happens when the public tries to access a big-daddy entity during such as Com Ed during an outage or other crisis time (i.e. Com Ed, which btw, is increasingly acting like BIG BROTHER with its so-called 'Smart Meters' takeover-- have you seen those spooky co. flyer inserts-- photo of a smart meter and the words
    "Hello there.")?

But, I digress...back to a local hotline for area emergencies. Why not be 'plugged in' at the local level with such real-time information/assistance? If Mrs. Goral is concerned enough to swing this-- and I don't see why not-- then all the better for the community she would serve. Btw, her idea, does not preclude
other ideas being implemented as well in the community, such as Chet 606 suggests, above...

The point is, I have stopped contacting my current alderman-- for any help-- long ago,
when I got no response to my letters, notes, emails in the past, about various issues-- and when I got a couple of very rude responses from his phone staffers. And that bit of flim-flam from the alderman, led me to take my vote and go elsewhere....

I live two blocks away on Kolin and there are days when i misplaced schoolt takes ten minutes to get onto 47th from 49th street. Big decisions are made without examining the impact. Alderman Burke had said several times at the Archer Heights Civic Association meeting that nothing would be brought to the community unless the people want it! I dont recall being asked if we wanted a huge school placed in our neighborhood that effects the quality of life of all of us.So what is the Aldermans plan for getting input from his constituients? Ive never been informed of a committe that looks at these things Have you?
its time to hold the Alderman accountable for his decisions. We need to make more demands of him and his staff to responsibly seek input from the community.especially when he is spending our tax dollar without a careful examination of its impact..like the UNO charter school's traffic debacle!
How about holding a TIF illumination to show the neighborhood exactly where our money has gone? The Civics Lab has all the information already. tom tresser will charge a small fee to present al the info. I know that Ald. B will not expose this information. Ive already asked and he sent me a link to a website that does not even work!

I remember when the past president of the AHCA strongly supported UNO, including arguing for it at the meetings and in the news letters. It was a time when many blindly followed the lead of the AHCA. It was Burke after all (when not Madigan or Zalewski) Once I find my copy of the local paper showing the president, vice and others of the AHCA proudly standing with Burke & others at the opening of UNO, I'll attach it here. Meanwhile, ...

Would say a 10-20% traffic reduction along 47th st between Cicero & Pulaski help?

And I'm not even an elected official on the SW-side. Maybe in the future (4 years). Until then, whoever is the next SW-side aldermen, feel free to take this idea and claim it as your own. Nice work Alderman __?__ (fill in the blank). The rush is on for the first 23rd ward candidate to put out campaign literature featuring a bicycle in the background. Someone please send me a copy!

Re: Comment by Chet606, above, this is what I heard from Deborah Shore on the radio over the weekend, in reply to just what you proposed:

Ms. Shore (of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District/MWRD), was a guest on the show this past Sunday morning, and answered a caller (who also proposed such a trail/bike path along this same stretch of S&S corridor). She replied that, she was not aware of ANY proposal to for such a trail in that area.

(and then added-- my own words here but this is the idea she communicated-- that, this area is mainly owned by the MWRD and leased out to various Chicago-land companies, and that it is still of economic viability to lease out for the transporting over-sized goods (i.e. their are still barge loading docks along this route), etc.

In effect-- and in my opinion/conclusion-- she was saying that there were no civic plans to develop all or any of this land for such public use and benefit to the communities surrounding-- that the profit motive for a few businesses still using said docks (and paying the MWRD rent) took precedence over public benefits (where have we heard this tiresome story before)!

(BTW, the radio show I heard this exchange on, is called: the Mike Nowak show, which is primarily dedicated to local gardening talk/tips, but also addresses local environmental concerns. That morning, the topic was about flooding in our area, the problems it causes citizens, etc., due mainly to the eroding underground infrastructure of the city. It was a very interesting program, and I would recommend Everyblockers tune in:

Cougrrrr. Re fruit vendors. I'm all for independent business efforts (that's the down side of WFM as they treat their employees not so well and no union - in this case, and only case, Jewel rocks so did Dominicks, but WF does also caries many independently sourced products. They often seem short-lived because the source has trouble keeping up with demand) so I have a soft spot for anyone who opens up their own shop - especially with quality products. I do not support the push carts simply because of the lack of quality products.

Same with ice cream 'Hello' trucks but the 'Ruf, Ruf' big issue with the Mr Frosty I referred to here 'Hello' many times, was the volume of the 'Hello' jingle that I easily picked up 3-4 blocks away. Often time the truck would park for 15-20 minutes a total of an hour or so of the same 'Hello' jingle 2-3 times an evening. I have to credit Ald Zalewski for he did help pass the Mobil Food Vendor Ordinance that made the like of Mr Frosty illegal. The ball was dropped however with enforcing the ordinance and Mr Zalewski refused to get behind it.

I'm all for mobile vendors in neighborhoods, as long as the volume is down and they clean up after themselves. It also adds extra eyes and community involvement on the street level away from computers and in-door activities. It would be great if we all took a walk outside occasionally. I kind of like the push cart jingle jingle, up until the point they started using an electronic amplified versions.

There is one daily fruit stand I pass 2-3 times a week minus winter. It's run by some charity - nice to see. I told him to stop me when he has organic produce. He occasionally does.

Have you talked to Barbara on her 'overly aggressive' statements? I call what I do 'passionate'.

Thanks Tad, I keep your number crunching in my head but I think the numbers are in our favor - each year more and more. Let's give it a try! If it works, great. I'm willing to invest some of my time & shopping dollars.
