For both candidates: Our neighborhood has a serious litter/ filthy yard problem. Yet, our alderman and streets and san supervisor are not interested in helping residents with this issue. Would you be open to forming a streets and san board of review so we can effectively deal with this quality of life issue?

Ministers singing Rahm's praises blind to closed schools

The Sun-Times ran my letter to the letter in Sunday's paper. I have posted an excerpt and link below.

It’s one thing to endorse the mayor. It’s another to sing his praises and excuse policies that have further destabilized the communities in which these pastors’ congregations are located. The decision to close schools was driven by inaccurate data. The school utilization formula was dictated by class size caps as opposed to being based on the actual capacity of the buildings. Moreover, the implementation of the policies to close schools was done in a way that compounded segregation and targeted black schools. When the discussion about closing schools came about, the mayor said it was about excess capacity in the schools. When the community showed the flaws in the utilization formula and data, the narrative changed to performance. This, after starving schools of resources over the years.

We really do need an educational facilities planning board that requires school districts to conduct financial and market feasibility studies before opening new schools in communities. They do this for hospitals and rehab centers to make sure they don't build too many institutions in one geographic area to increase the chances of all the health care institutions surviving.

The building that used to be Bontemps Elementary School is now a crumbling ruin-- granite walls chipped away, interior stripped of pipes and wiring, dusty plywood sheets bolted over most of the windows.

And when Asiaha Butler looks at it, she couldn’t be more excited.

“I’m thinking this back part could be like a little rest stop area, where people riding their bikes up on the trail can come down and learn about the community,” Butler says, describing a dream as she sweeps her hand toward a thicket of woods growing over the property boundary. “We also see a lot of opportunity for this to be a kind of urban agriculture education center, for farmers or for tourists—if you want to start an urban farm, you can come here and learn the basics.”

As president of the Residents Association of Greater Englewood (RAGE), Butler has spent almost two years leading conversations to get somebody—anybody—to set up shop in this building. Bontemps is one of six shuttered elementary schools in Englewood that are still empty since the district closed a total of 49 schools across the city. Englewood was hardest hit.

We stop working on the vacant lots at 1225 and 1227 S. Troy, where we learned the neighbors at 1223 just throws their garbage right of the porch unto the lots. Making it a landfills of garbage and other stuff right in the community. Its no wonder we had an outbreak of supersize rats.

How do I know about the super size rats? I had three in my apartment, it was a nightmare. It makes me sad to have neighbors who don't respect where they live.

Who is the blame for our communities being overlooked time and time again? What would you do if this was happening next door to you?

The Obama Library too rich for common people?

The writer of this story is victim of the same thinking that so many others are; limiting the uniqueness of this President.

Yes this will be the Library and Museum of the first U.S. President who is Black. Yes, it will be the first inner-city Presidential Library. And yes, it will house the legacy of a man who brought hope to millions, saved our country from financial collapse, twice stood toe to toe with Russia and won, established a point in the history of healthcare, “before and after Obamacare”, and stood up strong for Civil Rights protections.

As great as all of those things are, they represent who Barack became. Focusing on President Obama while ignoring Barack Obama is the limited thinking that skews our concept of what criteria will be utilized in his choice.

The amazing things that Barack has stood for and accomplished stems from his multi-ethnic background; his stand against apartheid; lighting a path for community empowerment on Chicago’s Southeast side, and experiencing the differences and similarities of Black communities, continents apart.

Those experiences helped define the man. Those are the experiences that North Lawndale appeals to. Our multi-ethnic history and location, our unique standing in Civil Rights history, and our one of a kind community based bid, all combine to offer Barack the perfect complement to his life and his continued life’s work.

Yes, of course we can’t compete with the power, prestige and wealth of private universities; we were never trying to. We offer something different, we offer fulfillment.

The Power of Community, Build it in North Lawndale.

Elliott Associates Marketing properties in USA Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong: They Market like They Own

Elliott Associates has this unique company motto that inspires its clients' complete trust: Marketing a property like they own it. Now, that is one real estate marketing strategy you do not hear every day. And if you do, you do not see it done every day as well. So, what does this mean in real business terms?

First of all, it is obvious that this will not be possible to do for any company that has not been actively involved in the real estate business itself. You cannot manage something for someone else unless you have done it yourself for your own property.

Thanks for responding, Sir Sel. I definitely believe that sanitation should be a priority, but I don't think that's all a candidate should be selling. I'd rather see what his/her plan is for moving the community forward, with business, infrastructure and amenities for its residents, and as for that particular candidate, I haven't seen it yet, and I would urge you to look deeper as well.

I've seen the turnaround of many areas: West Loop, South Loop, the convention center, and I can't recall that the charge was led by a massive cleanup, rather a comprehensive plan for the area to bring development in which beautification was included.

Mr. Scott, Jr has been with the Chicago Park District for many years, and those parks (specifically the smaller ones in the ward) are a real mess, and based on that record his promises to clean the ward can't really be trusted. Parks are the cornerstone of communities, as well as its schools--many of which are attached to parks and controlled by the district.

I agree with you on one thing though- if WE (the residents) can't do anything else WE should be cleaning up our community. It's refreshing to see community programs that are geared towards this cause and I hope to see many of our neighbors get involved. That work starts with them, but I'd like to see the ward leadership tackle the bigger issues.

The areas immediately connected to the influence of the loop didn't have to contend with the degrading, demeaning damage of trash and debris as in our communities.
Those areas offered more of an investment worthy appearance, which I feel is hampering our ability to attract businesses and employment opportunities. There is power and stability in a clean, healthy environment.
Please understand that position is not limited to the physical appearance. That's why I constantly stress the cleaning process starts from the inside...............OUT.
Some of the people, who are calling the shots, regarding the trash in our community, live in some of the more pristine areas of Chicago and represent some of best dressed elected officials at city hall. Look at Ed Burke, the filthiest demon inspired creature in local government.

The communities in Lawndale have board up buildings, garbage spread throughout, vacant lots, homeless and people sitting/standing on corners and around liquor stores, most of all, to many food pantries. Which organization can honestly say their program has benefit the community to its fullest capacity? Not one, moreover, these organization can't say they have maximize every dollars spent without waste. I dare to say these organizations directors exist to pay themselves and, not help the very ones they receive funds to assist, especially if they don't live in the Lawndale community.
There is not one organization that host day centers in Lawndale. If people had day centers where they could come together and congregate, putting their minds together creating opportunities to become self-sufficient and self-reliant and having support systems it would be legitimate reasons to fight for cuts the governor has implemented.

If I don't have the date correct to when Valerie Lenard' published the article mention, regarding how many "organizations and churches" exist in Lawndale, I believe she would be more than happy to back up her written article.

Ineffective community programs? Where? Show me who they are. Although facetious, I am very serious. I am very familiar with community programs that represent a good front and that's all.
Going back to the seventies, when I entered this vicious, unthankful calling to help us do something about the condition of our communities and use limited resources to effectively address social ills.
I have been amazed at the number of groups and the number of brick and mortar churches whose seemingly single purpose is to "be" and nothing else.
Has anyone got any idea how much money has been literally poured into the housing market in North Lawndale to rehabilitate again and again the structures? Millions, millions and more millions is the answer. Why? Because we, as a people will absolutely tear up a brick.
Look at all of these vacant lots in North Lawndale and through-out the city.
    Managing multi-family housing shouldn't be seen a social program; it's a business.
If the business of owning and managing multi-family buildings is a success, social concerns can, in part, be addressed by the owners of the properties.
I am a part of Kwanzaa Accountability Group whose single purpose is to hold each group the members are affiliated with accountable for their propose mission in the community.
Representative Turner, you should consider creating a vehicle like this for all of us to see who is who and who is doing what.
I am a founding board member of the Lawndale Amachi Mentoring Program that has an empirical history of seven fruitful years of serving the youth of North Lawndale whose parent(s) is incarcerated. Huge, huge problem.
That's one of the reasons I am feverishly committed to cleaning up our environment, because many of our mentees' parent(s) are or were influenced by the physical state of their community.
There is an abundance of evidence claiming we are a product of our environment. Check us out LAMP at WWW.CHICAGOLAMP.ORG
