No Response. Not a single word.

I'm having a difficult problem with the leaders of this effort to win the Presidential Library site not responding to my suggestions that we march to City Hall to have a rally. Get real, quit begging for Mayor's attention.

This opportunity is not going to be given to us, willy nilly, as it is being dangled in front of the Southsider; this is an opportunity we must take by engaging more of an aggressive fight to express our position.

This is my third and last time proposing that we take more of a direct action to make this happen.

Sel, what do you need in terms of support? My issue is I'm torn several different ways, and I really need to streamline my activities.

Will the real leaders of this effort show some signs. I'm willing to support you, as I have with periodic submissions and speaking out on behalf of North Lawndale. My presentation at both of the hearings out south clearly stated my preference and support for North Lawndale. I'm one of those characters who initially didn't think Lawndale had a chance at all. So much for my vision and faith in the audacity of hope.

But for those who have boldly stayed the course and didn't faint are to be celebrated however late the rest of us have surfaced It's marching time, people.

While I don't officially reside in North Lawndale, I claim my self-declared spiritual residency status and clearly appreciate those who have brought (us) this far. It's marching time, good people.

I'm confindent Congressman Davis will assist us with transportation for those of us (like me) not able to walk the entire distance to City Hall

List of Bad Landloards in Northlawndale

I was looking at the post of Emmanual's problem landlords and it appears there are only 4 in the Northlawndale area according to a friend. The article mentions:
Properties at 1301 S. Tripp Ave., 1001 S. Mayfield Ave. and 1624 S. Loomis St. are on the Chicago Building Department's list of "problem landlords." Can anyone expand on how this list is comprised and how we can get more of the obviously negligent property owners in NL on it to clean up their act?

  • Valerie F. Leonard Lawndale Community Builder and Policy Analyst

Loomis and Mayfield are not in North Lawndale.

  • Daniel - North Lawndale - 2006 MBA - DePaul - Informations Systems

Funny, I got that list from the Tribune listing. From what it looks like most are in the Austin area and only 4 problem landlords are in NL; seems low.

Mayor Emanuel's Commitment to West Side Presidential Library Rings Hollow

I still don't get the sense that the Mayor is putting equal weight on the West Side bid as he is the South Side bid for the OPL. If the Mayor wanted, he could have publicly announced that he would hold public hearings on the matter of the conveyance of the land to the Obama Foundation in the event the West Side site is the successful bidder. He made a big deal out of announcing over several days that he would have the Park District to host hearings on the conveyance of Park District land to the City to build the OPL in the event the U of C is the successful bidder. There was a City Council resolution crafted for the conveyance of the Park land that included language to the effect that the City Council supported both of the Chicago bids, but it is clear the resolution was more advantageous for U of C than UIC.

The article from UIC News indicated the Mayor came to the West Side and met with elected officials and community leaders in front of the proposed West Side site for a photo op. There were no quotes from our elected officials or community leaders. This event was clearly driven by the Mayor and not our community.

After the photo op, the Mayor and our community leaders went and made a presentation at Sumner School during school hours. To the best of my knowledge, the general public was not allowed into this tightly controlled setting. At what point will the Mayor and UIC hold a public hearing so the public can weigh in on the West Side proposal as we did for the South Side proposal?

As a result of the give and take and public discourse on the South Side, the City did develop a more reasonable proposal to acquire the park land in the event U of C is the successful bidder. On the UIC side, residents still have a number of questions that have not been answered.

Thanks for your help

MLK Day Updates | Is There a Media Blackout of the West Side Bid?

With the recent press covering the South Side Obama Presidential Library bid, West Side stakeholders are beginning to wonder if there is a deliberate blackout of the West Side bid. Read updates from the North Lawndale Presidential Library Committee here.

This Library will not be a gift, no questions asked.
That was a cute little press release last week, but we need to be bolder in our statement.

The University of Chicago is being allowed to change their bid, after the filing dead line. If I'm wrong in my understanding, please somebody explain to me.

I wouldn't be able to walk all the way, but will participate

The Resurrection Project

In my various explorations throughout social media (Twitter, Facebook, Pilsen Portal, etc.) I invariably come across positive accounts of The Resurrection Project's (TRP) initiatives in the neighborhoods of Pilsen, Little Village, and Back of the Yards. Most of these accounts come directly from TRP itself or organizations associated to TRP.

I have no doubt that TRP is doing good work in the community, but I'm finding it difficult to get objective viewpoints through the usual channels. I want to hear from people who have had direct experiences with this organization without the spin. I want to know what this organization does well and where it falls short.

  • My concern stems from the development going up on Damen, just north of 18th. I believe it will be called Casa Querétaro. I'm concerned that the development may be out of character for the area. Additionally, what kind of resources do they have for managing a building of 49 units....

My concern stems from the development going up on Damen, just north of 18th. I believe it will be called Casa Querétaro. I'm concerned that the development may be out of character for the area. Additionally, what kind of resources do they have for managing a building of 49 units. I've checked some of their buildings for violations on the city's website. The new complexes don't have violations, but a lot of the older ones do.

Thus, I want to hear from folks that have lived in housing managed by TRP. Are the buildings well run, are they slumlords, what is their screening process for selecting future tenants? Many of my friends may be interested and they have raised all of the above issues. I want 1st hand accounts from folks who have had positive/negative experiences with TRP.

  • Yes! Help out in this endevor.
