Charter Schools and Politics

I got this from my friend Alonso Zaragoza:

"One of my friends is a parent of a child in a Noble Charter school and on the parent committee for the school. She said that Stand For Children has been going to the school recruiting parents to work on the Mayor's campaign telling people that If the Mayor loses, their charter school will be closed. They are also recruiting parents for pro-charter aldermanic campaigns in Noble schools and other Charter networks....

Adding my two cents: Governor-Elect Bruce Rauner is the Chairman of the Board for the Nobel Charter Schools. He was instrumental in providing the funds for Stand for Children to come to Chicago to provide advocacy for school reform, which for the most part has been pro-charter. Stand for Children is a tax exempt, 501 (c) (3) organization. They should NOT be engaged in partisan politics. Unless they have a political action arm, they could be jeopardizing their tax exempt status by supporting the Mayor and specific pro-charter candidates.

Regardless, this sets a terrible precedent--having publicly-funded schools being used as part of a political apparatus.

Chicago Mayoral, 24th Ward Candidates Court West Side Voters At Local Forum

Chicago aldermanic hopefuls running in the West Side's crowded 24th Ward race made their pitch to voters at a Tuesday night candidate forum, with many vowing to, if elected, boost employment and economic opportunities in the North Lawndale community.

Eight of the 12 candidates vying to replace retiring Ald. Michael Chandler (24th), who announced earlier this month that he would not seek re-election, attended the forum, held at One Way Baptist Church, 4152 W. 16th St.

Mayoral candidates Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd), Cook County Commissioner Jesus "Chuy" Garcia and community activist William 'Dock' Walls also made brief remarks at the event, attended by about 50 people. I actually live in 28/24 (that set of blocks north of 290 around Kostner). Our voter cards say 28, but our city of Chicago still has us listed in 24 I guess until the new ward map kicks in? Its a shame because our block and the surrounding area is still terrible even though its technically represented by 2 alderman. I'm interest in both these races because my son goes to elementary school in 24.

The sheer number of candidates in both 24 and 28 is indicative that something needs to change. I'm not in love with any of the candidates or know much about them, and the race is 8 weeks away? Does anyone knock on doors anymore?

On Thursday, December 11, 2014, the UIC-North Lawndale team submitted our proposal as one of the four finalists . Thank you North Lawndale for stepping up.

As we submitted our bid, I reflected on our first Facebook post, made on our newly created group, Westside Presidential Library. (We have since moved to the North Lawndale Presidential Library page). As we focus our efforts on community outreach and engagement, I would like to share it again. I am truly amazed at how a “pipe dream” is on the precipice of becoming a reality. God is smiling on us, indeed.

Oh, yea. Well, cry me a tear. No, better yet, cry me river. None of that boo-hoo stuff. Cry with feeling and pain. Yell and scream and kick. Let your nose run some, unattended. Holler out, "Oh, Lord, help me."

    Good forum last night.

  • SIR SEL OF NORTH LAWNDALE AND BEYOND I'm a community filth and fear fighter

None of the candidates said anything about cleaning up the community. I took a picture of a beer bottle right in front of the church in the parkway. That's the pain in my you know what, as well as the obstacle that is going undermine any effort of the winner, unless he or she has that issue at the forefront of any propose promises.

Businesses in EGP N Lawndale

Are there any good businesses to support in the area? It seems like everywhere I go in my neighborhood, I see crappy corner stores, bad unsanitary looking restaurants, and run down buildings. I tried to eat at some local restaurants about 10 years ago when I first moved in, but would more often than not get sick. I tried to eat at some local restaurants about 10 years ago when I first moved in, but would more often than not get sick. A neighborhood can't really thrive without businesses, and when all the middle income people from Logan Square get pushed out by high rises and start coming down here if there's nothing in place then local residents will have nothing to hang on to, and frankly little reason to complain.

So I don't know if others feel the same, but whether you do or not, it would be good to have a list of businesses that are worth supporting. So if you know of a good place to spend money locally, let us all know.

The University of Illinois at Chicago has partnered with the North Lawndale community to submit a bid to build the Obama Presidential Library on the West Side of Chicago. Two sites are being considered—one on the UIC campus and the other in North Lawndale, on the corner of Roosevelt and Kostner. We have conducted an informal survey of Westside stakeholders to get a sense for the level of support for the Proposed Obama Presidential Library in North Lawndale. Surveys were sent by email, and posted on our Facebook and Twitter accounts, through a town hall meeting and on our website. Some of the same people who received the messages through social media were also in attendance at the town hall meeting. We collected responses from Thursday, December 4, 2014 until Wednesday, December 10, 2014. A total of 37 people responded as of 10:48 a.m. on December 10, 2014. Respondents include Westside residents, business owners, school administrators and representatives of organizations. We thank everyone who has taken the time to respond. Results are found at http://northlawndalepresidentiallibrary.org/2014/12/11/survey-results-are-in/

i am particularly moved by the comment from one of the Sumner Elementary students who said that he wanted to see the Presidential Library across the street from his school so he would not have to see all of that trash and debris. He's got my attention and I am going by the school to introduce myself to him with the purpose of helping to fulfill that wish of cleaning up the garbage.

Smart Meters

Recently I have had an installation of a Smart meter and while I was waiting to do a cost comparison I figured I would reach out to my neighbors to see if they had done some of this analysis on their electric bills already? I also wanted to see if there were any concerns related or incidents as early installation of these meters were known to cause fires, fines were threatened if refused, and billing issues had been shown to appear in other states.

  • Marcus de la fleur Proud Lawndale resident

Gpblight and Daniel, thank to for keeping the post alive and information flowing. Please keep it up!

I cannot make it to the Dec 11 event - have other commitments. But if either of you are going, would you mind reporting back? Would love to hear how the event went.

    Thx

A friend has solar panels and wind turbine. She is trying to figure out if she is getting what she is entitled to.

They tell her that her meters reverse the counter so her usage is lessened every month. She is trying to verify that.

She has separate software that says by month how much electric and wind she generates. She cannot figure out though the gross usage minus the reverse...that comes out to her bill.

I don't think the count is accurate because her bill is close to mine without a smart meter turbine, solar.

People Running for Alderman, Can any of them name the 3 Branches of Government? Embarrassing :(

Just holding a conversation with her has been mind-numbing because her view as well as her childrens views have been "Leave our neighborhood alone, we are not going to change anything" And they have pretty much Adored all of the Drugs being sold, their TRASH surrounding their homes and the blocks and being a LARGE CONTRIBUTOR TO The Negative Ways of the neighborhood. Does anyone have a platform? What do you plan on doing? Have you ever managed anything other than papers in front of you at work? I am embarassed that these running lack education, don't know how government is ran, made no effort to get an education.. This is disgusting. It's just as worse than having 1000 churches in the 24th Ward. When does it end? It's pure ignorance. SO Is Life Time Runners who have put their names on the ballot 5 times already.. As if they didn't get the hint that NO ONE LIKES YOU so let your family and friends vote for someone a bit more promising.. THANKS FOR SPLITTING THE VOTE!! This ward will forever be the Dumping ground for Misfits!

I noticed a couple of new names that were added since the last time I checked this list out. I just pray that whoever wins will do what they are promising the 24th Ward in their campaign brochures and Facebook posts. Some of them have not put out any literature, or at least I haven't seen any. Maybe they are waiting until after the holidays.

I have waited 4 decades for the change, I hope one of them can be the force that makes it happen.

  • Project North Lawndale Why are the W.Side Alderman Paid for NOTHING?

if you haven't heard of any of these folks, you can be assured that they probably will not plan on doing anything. I am embarassed that some of them can't even comprehend laws and government yet they threw their names on a ballot. Their conversations show that they lack education,...

Their conversations show that they lack education, have never seen many of them in the community doing anything yet they are running for Aldermen? Lawndale will forever be the laughing stock of ignorance. this is why you all never receive anything the majority of your neighbors don't care, the city doesn't either.. it's a dumping ground for misfits.. it looks like Frank BAss has a chance, he at least works for the city as a lobbyist. If you look at when these folks filed, it was somewhat a last minute ordeal like they just Thought about running, nothing else to do so why not continue to screw this ward over for a salary? I feel for you and hoping good measures come from all of this bizarre behavior

We had 15 candidates run last time, and the vote was so badly split that the former Alderman won it, mostly likely on name recognition. That won't happen again, since Mr. Chandler has withdrawn. Project North Lawndale makes an excellent point about credentials: what is this person's education? What has he/she done in the community since the last aldermanic election? What are this person's plans to involve community residents in his/her decisions? Mr. Chandler formed advisory committees, a worthy effort, but meetings were constantly cancelled, so they fizzled out. What is this candidate's plan to make sure the community is heard when we get the Obama Presidential Library? We can sit by and get steamrollered by UIC or demand that the community has a voting role in the plans and their effect on taxes and gentrification. What about the "menu" of $1 million which every alderman receives to spend in the community? Three aldermen in other wards have set up a process so the community decides how that money is spent. GET INVOLVED! Find out about the role of the alderman and evaluate candidates based on what they are likely to do for North Lawndale. What you do or don't do in this aldermanic campaign will have an effect on what gets done WITH OR TO North Lawndale in the next four years.
