Old Erie/Ogden Market

Does anyone have any info on the plans for the site of the now demolished Erie/Ogden market?

  • Finally got demolished!?!?

  • KC resident!

rumors abound...the most recent I heard was that the owner has a super high price on it and that it probably has leaking underground storage tank (LUST) issues which would be an expensive environmental clean-up (it was once a gas station). Again, all rumors but they feel believable.

Looking for 1-bed under $1100

My current roommate is looking to move to a 1-bed place, somewhere in the vicinity of Ukrainian Village, West Town, Logan Square, East Humboldt Park (although she said she's open to the north side as well). She has 2 dogs and is having a lot of trouble finding places that take dogs that aren't also insanely expensive.

The younger dog is 4 years old and only 11lbs, the other is a super-sweet old lady, lab-mix who is on her last...

The younger dog is 4 years old and only 11lbs, the other is a super-sweet old lady, lab-mix who is on her last legs. My roommate is a really lovely middle-age professional. She has always paid her portion of the bills on time and is a responsible, mature person. She's looking to move in sometime between August 1 and September 1. If you happen to know of anyone looking for a great tenant, please send along their contact info etamars@gmail.com. I'm only moving out because I ended up buying a place.

Re-Zoning Proposal for Mega Building on Grand- Yikes!

Hi Neighbors!
This message is a bit late, but FYI to some: there is a proposed new construction project at 1328-1334 West Grand Ave. This is a parcel of three lots where Uppercrust Bakery is currently located (formerly a D'Amato's). Applicants of the re-zoning are planning a massive 14 unit structure that replaces the Grand Avenue standard of commercial on first floor, residential above with a building that is only residential.
This takes a lot that was only meant for 9 homes and expands it into 14- that's a really big deal. (Risk of overcrowding, more trash problems, etc.) Also, plans call for the building to be built practically straight from the sidewalk (which allows for NO trees! No greenery) and straight to the alleyway. The proposed height of the building puts this new construction HIGHER than current precedent. All of the above issues immediately and directly impact our neighbors on Grand Avenue and Ada Street. We just found out the re-zoning meeting is at City Hall tomorrow (Monday, July 18th) at 10:00am. Please come if you have the time, OR please sign our petition (neighbors at 525 N. Ada, it's in your lobby!)
This petition helps alert our Alderman Joe Moreno that we do not like our neighborhood being overtaken by massive monster buildings, we do not like our eastern views being compromised, and we do not like setting precedence for no greenery. Any responses to this post, I will print out or email to Alderman's office. If anyone is interested, you may also email rvaladez@cityofchicago.org (they actually told us to send emails otherwise I wouldn't have posted.) Best regards!

Small Little Dan, the actions of NIMBY's who want to limit the supply of housing most often because they like living where they do and are irrationally afraid of having too many more people live near them due to unfounded fears about traffic congestion, parking, and shadows cast by tall buildings (have I covered most of the foolish NIMBY talking points?) drive up property values which may be one the primary unstated goals of NIMBY's. The ignorant NIMBY's then often default to a rationale for their anti-residential stances to be "maintaining the character" of their pastoral urban community, however they arbitrarily define it. NIMBY's are fools any way you slice and dice their fallacious arguments for arbitrarily and capriciously wanting to limit residential density of new developments.

  • Westsider, I understand your frustration but I don't think you're helping the cause by engaging this way.

In a certain sense I can't blame the anti-development crowd because limiting residential construction is in their financial self-interest. I'm just trying to argue that their financial self-interest is not the same thing as the public interest.

Stray cat spotted Carroll/Wood

Im not a cat person so i do not know the breed. All black cat with yellow eyes, on the smaller side of an average size. No collar. Seen on the trail leading up to the metra line on the south side of the tracks. Would need a trap as the cat was intrigued with me but skiddish when approaching. Sorry couldnt get a photo before the cat ran.

You might be able to borrow a cat trap from the The Tree House Humane Society. Or at least be able to get some direction from them. Hope you're able to catch the cat!

  • Tree House on Ashland loans out humane traps if you want to catch it that way, they can give you tips on how to do it.

You will then need a plan on what to do with the cat, and what to do if it is not a friendly cat as well.

Looking for a 1-bedroom in West Town Area

Hi Neighbors! My sister (and current roommate) is moving to Denver at the end of August, so that means I need to find myself a 1 bedroom apartment. I love West Town and the surrounding areas and would love to stay here. My range is about $1200 and I need easy parking and something not too far from the highway. If you have a place or know of anyone who does, please let me know! As you all know, apartment hunting can be a rough process. Thanks!!!

  • Hi Kimberly,

Thanks so much for reaching out and for your interest, but I am pretty set on finding a place of my own. I agree that the search has been hard and I hope you find something!

Lost Cat

Found an adorable kitten in the alley behind Augusta and Ashland. Way too clean and friendly to be a random stray.

  • So cute! It probably has a chip in it, any Vet can scan it for you. Also, while cats may like milk, it often gives them the runs so you may want to stick with a nice can of food :)
