Four West Loop galleries that all shared the same building on Washington Avenue- Document, PLHK, Volume, and Western Exhibitions -recently moved into a new venue in West Town, a large second-floor space on Chicago Avenue just west of Ashland. But the migration wasn't acrimonious.

850 block of Paulina condo robbery

Hello,
Just a heads up, after hearing about this I checked my tenants entryways and realized someone was trying to get into my building as well - It's the first winter we haven't had a dog, so we are prime. Heads up at Paulina and Marshfield north of Chicago Avenue.

  • Thanks for sharing Sarah. Did your neighbor scare them off? Were the police called? Any stuff in particular they took? So sorry it happened to you - hopefully police take notice soon.

  • Thanks Rich. No our neighbor didn't realize what the sound was until later. According to the police, streets and sanitation workers actually saw three young men leaving our garage with backpacks on. They noticed the men didn't close the garage door and so they peaked inside, saw our door broken, and called the police (~3:30pm). So the police were actually there before we even knew about it. They stole jewelry and small electronics (laptops, kindles, etc). We didn't have an alarm at the time (we do now!).

My thanks to the female stranger who anonymously paid for my groceries

My heartfelt thanks to the female stranger who anonymously paid for my groceries at the Mariano’s on Chicago Ave. on Wednesday 11 January.

My heartfelt thanks to the female stranger who anonymously paid for my groceries at the Mariano’s on Chicago Ave. on Wednesday 11 January.
I am unsure whether you realized I was concerned over the amount I had to spend versus the amount I needed to survive for the next month or that I was having a (very!) bad day. Maybe you just randomly choose me – which ever is the reality, I thank you. Since you arranged the transaction so brilliantly, I was unable to thank you in person, so you may never know how it has helped me. Moreover, it has reinforced my faith in the human condition and your compassion is overwhelming.
I am eternally grateful,

The Old Guy wearing the black jacket………….

The diva finally motions the clerk over the counter and they have a whispered conference which I am CONVINCED is about me and probably includes some nasty comments and giggles.............THEN she calls over a manger and a bunch of whispered conversations and BS and I am steaming..........

She leaves, I start my checkout, at the end of which the cashier calls over the manager AGAIN, whispers to her, the manager comes over to my register and does something, turns around and shoves my receipt in my face and says "Here's you receipt". Rude as HELL! I finally stagger out there, get on a bus and FINALLY make it home, unpack my meager month's supply of comestibles, and check over my receipt. I notice a number of issues with the receipt, foremost of which is that there is no payment method and no total! I used my bank card and I am careful about balancing debits on my account so I am frustrated. I get BACK on a bus, go BACK to the market, and start ranting and railing and asking WHY the receipt is so messed up (as in is the cashier doing something shady, etc.)

To cut to the chase, the woman before me, who was the crowning annoyance of my day PAID for my groceries...............and, she wished it to be totally anonymous so she asked the clerks NOT to tell me it was paid for.

Of course I am very grateful and impressed that the woman made certain to be gone by the time I could check my receipt, etc.

So yes, my faith in humanity is restored..............but my faith in MYSELF is now questionable...................

  • Grc2000, your honesty in self refection & willingness to share it, hopefully will work towards restoring your faith in yourself. We all have moments of seeing ourselves in the mirror & not liking what we see, i can completely relate. Ideally, we learn from these & grow. Without a doubt, you will have many opportunities to put these lessons to use. Both the strangers kindness & your heartfelt gratitude have brought happy tears to my eyes. Thank you for posting.

As for eats, there are only items such as olives and nuts—but, thankfully, the West Town Bakery is on the first floor. The spot, an offshoot of the main bakery/diner at 1916 W. This is the new Chicago Recycling Amendment. Mind you, without lockable cans, ANYBODY can throw out ANYTHING into someone else's can. It happens all the time:

New Chicago Recycling Ordinance for 2017

The City Council recently amended the Chicago Recycling Ordinance to reflect the most current standards within the recycling industry. The ordinance now provides greater clarity to property owners about their recycling responsibilities while also giving city officials stronger enforcement capabilities. The new Chicago Recycling ordinance took effect on January 1, 2017.

Under the amended ordinance, property owners of multi-unit residential, office and commercial establishments will now be mandated to provide source-separated, single stream recycling (separating recyclable materials from waste before the point of collection), which is the most commonly used collection method in the industry. Property owners will also be responsible for implementing an ongoing educational program that includes posting signage, providing adequate carts and sending written notice to tenants about the changes.

The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation (DSS) will handle enforcement of the ordinance that includes a 30-day warning period and graduated penalties for non- compliance after an inspection. These penalties include: $500-$1,000 (first offense); $1,000 to $2,500 (second offense within 12-month period); and $2,500-$5,000 (third and each subsequent violation occurring within 12-months of the most recent violation). In 2013, Chicago completed the expansion of its blue cart recycling program that provides bi-weekly recycling collection services to the more than 600,000 residents who live in single family homes, two-flat, three-flat and four-flat buildings.
