Help Replace Local Teen's Stolen Items

At the request of neighbors who wanted to help, I set up a GoFundMe account for a local teen, Leslie, who was mugged at Wood and Rice. The offenders were able to take everything but Leslie -- they tried to put her in the back seat of their (stolen) car but this brave young lady was able to punch one of them in the face causing him to fall on the floor giving her an opportunity to escape.

A note from Leslie to the community:
"I can't believe everybody's willing to do this for me. I appreciate it so much. I work and go to school in the area and everything I have I've worked for it because my mom is a single mom and my dad doesn't even live in Chicago. The fact that people in the area our willing to be so kind and thoughtful honestly means more then anything."

On Monday, February 20, Leslie, a 17-year-old Chicago high school student, was mugged in the early afternoon near Rice and Wood streets by three males. They caught Leslie on a good day for them and a bad day for her as she had all of her valuables with her.

I think its time to start sanctioning the parents of some of these innocent children that are loosing their lives by being caught in the crossfire of the current gang warfare. Yes, there is an underlying problem that needs attention - and I have few suggestions for that, other than what has already been proposed.

But the death of that toddler the other day could have been avoided if his mother had not PUT him in the line of fire. I am certain that she knew her male companion was a known gang member. And she would have to be dead, deaf and/or blind to NOT know about the current level of violence plaguing Chicago. Yes, I know she was injured as well. But she CHOOSE to be with that gang member - her toddler did not.

Maybe it is time for the mothers, daughters, sisters, and girlfriends of these gang members to start tossing these guys out and not allow them to hang around the innocent. And to stop "sitting in an SUV on the corner of"..................

I know this will not solve the problem, and I realize that other innocents are being injured while in parks and playgrounds or simply on the front porch. But they are in the vicinity of the gang members and that is why they are being unjustly caught up in this nightmare.

Sorry if this offends anyone, it is simply my opinion, and I feel strongly enough about it to share it..................

  • urban loves urban life.

I totally agree! The people that make these babies and then by their actions put them in harm's way, need to be held responsible, I'm sick and tired of seeing the crying hysterical relatives on the news calling for something to be done:( babies having babies...and an apparent lack of decent adults guiding and living by example...= a lot of misery.

  • I noticed in the video that the little boy was not in a car seat, either. Don't think he was even belted in. He was seated in the back next to the target. All around irresponsible people. So sad for the little boy. He had no chance.

Special 606 Patrol, Dedicated Bar Detail Not Happening in Wicker: Officials

On Thursday, Hopkins wrote a letter to the acting director of the bureau to say that if the plan does happen, the federal troops should consider using offices inside the Cook County Sheriff's Central Warrant headquarters at 937 N. Wood St.

This article has 3 other Chicago locations (Show)

"Is the detail to be returned? I would love to reinstate the entertainment detail," Saldana told the crowd in the Pritzker School auditorium 2009 W. Schiller St.

Though the bars near Wicker Park's six-way Milwaukee, Damen and North avenues intersection get a lot of police attention, if the entertainment detail were to return, Saldana said it would also be focused on other bar pockets extending west down Milwaukee Avenue to Kimball Avenue.

Due to a push by Hopkins and Moreno, the Special Service Area No. 33 previously allocated $50,000 in its 2017 budget for safety that must specifically be used on major corridors such as Ashland, Damen, Division, North, Milwaukee and Western.

Special 606 Patrol, Dedicated Bar Detail Not Happening in Wicker: Officials
WICKER PARK - Concerns over escalating crime compelled more than 400 Wicker Park, Bucktown and Noble Square residents to pack an auditorium Wednesday night to seek answers from Chicago police, Park District officials and three aldermen.
