WILSON & LAWRENCE LAKESHORE DRIVE VIADUCT REPAIRS
The construction project to repair these crumbling bridges and add new bicycle lanes are now underway. The project includes structural repairs to existing steel beams, repairs to the concrete decks, construction of new parapet walls and installation of shared-use (bicycle and pedestrian) paths on the sidewalks underneath the viaducts. Wilson and Lawrence Avenues will each temporarily be closed to vehicular traffic for a brief duration during nighttime, but not at the same time. Those who were staying under the viaducts are being assisted by the city's Department of Family & Support Services--which has had case workers on site on a daily basis for more than a month--as well as other non-profit providers who specialize in identifying and accessing shelter and permanent housing. I fully support a "Housing First" approach with the goal of finding permanent, affordable housing and then providing connections to community-based support for long-term success. I will continue to work with agencies such as DFSS and non-profits, as well as listen to the concerns of the community at large, in order to meet the needs of all members of our community."

  • Can you tell me where the Tent City residents have been going to the bathroom this entire time?

  • Neighborhood Dad 25-year resident of North Center/St Bens/Lincol...

C'mon, Robert. There is no hypocrisy there. Allowing people to camp over night as families in a park - for a 19-hour period - does not undermine moving people from sidewalks who have been there for years.

Are you missing a dog?

If anyone is missing a tiny male chihuahua or similar breed, he was running down Sacramento towards Diversey around 4pm on Sunday 9/24. I tried catching him but lost him. He had a collar with a blue tag and his left hind leg appeared to be injured. :(

A Protest Tent Lands in Alderman Cappleman's Yard

The saga of shame that is Alderman Cappleman's policies toward the homeless has begun a new chapter...Ghost Tents:

Protesters Erect Tent In Uptown Alderman's Yard To Blast Displacement Of The Homeless
fullscreen A group of Chicagoans who are outraged over the displacement of homeless people in Uptown took their protest to the door of the neighborhood's alderman. The group last night set up an orange tent in the yard of Ald. James Cappleman (46th), making direct reference to the neighborhood's recently evicted "tent city."

At the rally I saw his supporters, I realized there are a LOT of people like the people I saw. They were not all tiki torch carting white supremacists, they were common. So I knew he could win, not that he would but that he could.

But to mute's point you are correct...most people completely misread what was going on last summer and fall.

  • I seem to remember a lot of activists telling me that Chui was going to win the mayoral election because 'everyone hates Rahm.'

It's hard for a sitting Alderman to lose reelection. Most average voters will only remember the disgusting shutdown of LSD and will vote Cappleman.

Last night around 9:10pm, I was traveling northbound on damen Ave. at the 4 way stop at Barry & damen, I proceeded to enter the intersection when it was my turn & I was hit by someone driving an old dingey white or light silver SUV with a darker front bumper. They were traveling wesbound. I don't know if they ever stopped for the stop sign. I saw them enter the intersection, coming right at me as I was midway through the intersection. We briefly made eye contact & there was no indication in that moment they cared about what was about to happen. My car became undriveable & I thought I saw this car pull over on the northbound side of Barry once they made it through the intersection but if they did, they quickly drove off. If anyone has any security cameras in that area or knows of any that could have captured this incident please advise. It's a busy intersection right, with Hamlin park being on the corner south/west corner. No one stoped to help. There were a group of kids that quickly dispersed after witnessing the accident & SUV speed off but they were unable to see the plates. They were confident it was a Chevy, possibly a suburban & that the driver was a woman with tattoos.

Thanks for any and all of your help,

  • Hope you are. Well that stinks. If I see a car with damage fitting your discription I will get plate. Damage to their car should be front end? They would have had to back up first then go around your car after hitting it right? Shame on the people disbursing and not stopping or sticking around to make sure you were ok. And to the driver for not stopping karma is coming.

Meeting others in Neighborhood-Hamlin Park

My family and I recently moved to the neighborhood, in part, due to the family friendly neighborhood. Any ideas as to neighborhood events to meet others/our daughter meet kids her age (tween)? Thanks!

There are also lots of extracurricular/enrichment activities in the area, from classes at Hamlin Park to art/music classes in Roscoe Village to sports activities. Does she like to play soccer? AYSO. Art or music? She can try August House or Old Town School of Folk Music.

You may also want to look into volunteer activities such as helping out at a food pantry or animal shelter.

Yes. You make friends through common interests. Our truest friends are those with many layers of similar interests and same values. And mostly when parents are friends too. :) get involved together in stuff. Church is a big one :)

Relocating to Avondale

Hi! My family of 4 is relocating to the Avondale area and would love some area feedback! We are relocating for the Indianapolis area.

Here are a few things I am interested in :
-art scene (My husband is an artist so I'd like to connect with the art orgs.)
-schools (I have two children in elementary school and are currently homeschooling.)
-dining options/recommendations
-general area/community, and any feedback relating to relocating to the area.

Thank you in advance! :)

Rush is better. I recommend Jennifer Goldfarb at Rush Primary Care, 1300 W Bemont, located east of Avondale. Nice seafood restaurant/market across the street too. Don't know any pediatricians, but I'm sure that she does. http://myrush.rush.edu/PhysicianPractices/PrimaryCareWH/Pages/default.aspx

Not in the neighborhood, but Miswak Dentistry on Chicago just east of Western is where I go. https://www.miswakdentistry.com/

I moved to Harding & George a year and a half ago, and couldn't be happier with the neighborhood. I scoured the police maps before moving as I wasn't familiar with the neighborhood, and found little activity (particularly compared to areas further south and east). While I seldom walk anywhere late at night, I've never felt unsafe after dark (as a single woman in my 30s). I wouldn't say parking is terrible, but it fills up at night.

Cermak, Binnys, and Aldi within walking distance will make your life 100x easier than you realize. Express cafe at the end of the street makes a tasty Jibarito, and my vegetarian mother loves El Muchacho Allegre on Pulaski. Staropolska has amazing polish food, and Kurowskis is a gem for meats to grill. The ice cream truck will make you a soft serve sundae for $1.75. Brew Brew is great, and Hopewell and Harding Tavern are casual, easy places for a beer (although a slight hike). I'd characterize the neighborhood as quiet, diverse, and with a lot of families.

A few months back I was witness to a car break-in near my house. On the corner or Barry and Central Park. It was very dark (9pm in the spring time), but I got a fairly good image of the man who broke into the truck. I've since retained the memory of the man's features, which were distinct, as well as the way he walks. I also noticed when he broke into the truck that he had a toolbox with him.

While witnessing the break in, i called 311 (as I was told to do after witnessing a previous break) but was on hold for 20 min or longer so I hung up. I should have stayed on the phone longer or at least posted something on here, but I did not.

It's 5:40pm now, I have just parked by my house on Barry and see this same exact man park his Mitsubishi crossover across the street from me. It's light out now and I know it's him because he's the same height, has the same hair, has the same strange shuffled walk, same styled jeans, AND has the same toolbox with him.

I took a photo of his license plate. Is there anything I can do about this now????

  • Could you go to your police station with the information, both present and past> Remember, 911 is for what is happening now; 311 was city services and what happened in the past. Don't listen when they say 311....
Is the original car that was broken into still there? Can you leave a note for the owner saying you have information?
    Good luck and stay safe...

  • Maplewood John Life-long Chicagoan

Yes, you can always call 911 to report any suspicious person, especially if they are lurking, trying door handles of cars, or trying to open garage doors or rear/alley gates. Tell the 911 dispatcher that you recognize him from a previous car break-in on your block. (He may have outstanding warrants if he's a career criminal, or the police may simply enourage him to move on.)

When the condo looked at using the basement a few years ago, it was found that we could not use the basement as in doing so it would incur more than $20,000 in cost to get a COO, so we decided not to incur the cost. The business on the first floor decided to take over the basement and not pay the money for the COO (we know this because there are no rails that were needed to get the COO on the stairway). We know that they are using the basement as they have told us that they have several million dollars in inventory and there are lights on in the basement 24 X 7. We know that one year they paid rent to the association as it showed as income in the annual report, after that however they have paid no rent. The board is complicit in this violation.
Any suggestions as to how to proceed to get the business out of our basement would be appreciated.

I agree but if you have never seen our condo decs. Things that are not marked as LCE are LCE. Another big example is that there is *NO* discussion in the docs about what the basement is. Everybody who has read the IL condo act knows for example if the outer walls of the building are not described in the condo decs are LCE. It's a long torturous way about how the building was converted from furniture warehouse to condo's and the conniving and questionable things that went on during that time. I only know parts because a former president of the association told me about the mess.
The lawyer looked at the Condo Decs and shook his head and said that this was not going to be easy.

I think its different from condo to condo so I don't think it's wise to generalize.
I have seen *some* that have run themselves into the ground and I have seen others that look great and the balance sheets are excellent. I think in our situation it is a matter of the president is the final word and no one goes against him (except me).
On the whole, he does a good job it's the legal items he turns a blind eye to. EXAMPLE: 2 years ago (it goes back longer) the sidewalk in front of the building shifted. It left a gap of two inches between the sidewalk and the building. We had people tripping on it left and right. He said it was a city issue, I suggested that meanwhile, we should put a patch over the tripping part and get the city to do its thing. He refused to and I reminded him that it's our fault if someone trips and the association would get sued. He yawned and said so what. We finally got the city out to look at it and they said yes you need a new sidewalk, they told him that you can only apply between midnight and 3 AM on January 1st. The next Jan I applied and they sent out people to look at it and apparently gave us an estimate of $23K would be our share. They stumbled around and missed the June 15th deadline. They should have had it in the budget, of course, they did not. So now we are going to have to wait another year to apply (again). Someone in the building went out and bought so filler so people wouldn't trip. The President said it was a city issue, not ours so if some tripped they could sue the city. That is what kind of President we have.

Any recommendations? Anyone have a good experience with moving pods? Thanks

Screaming near Melrose and LSD

Does anyone know what happened last night near W Melrose and LSD/ Sheridan? There were extended howling screams coming from somewhere in the area. People in my building and the back of the building on Aldine were out on their fire escapes to look around and we were all yelling to each other asking what happened and that we had called the cops. I didn't hear any sirens though and the screaming stopped, which was the scariest part! It sounded like someone was getting murdered.

  • Tzipora Kinney Chicago Newbie

What time was this? I heard some strange noises last night at some point though nothing quite like you described. Just thought it was some drunk idiot shouting. Like it was odd for sure but I didn't get the feeling someone was hurt/in danger.

Thunk I briefly heard a siren like awhile after the noise stopped. Didn't stick around though. Just seemed to pass through.

  • It was Saturday night, maybe 7pm? Anybody that was home on the easternmost ends of W Melrose and Aldine would have heard it. I just hope whoever it was is okay.

People's Gas rates are up??

Anyone else notice unusually high People's Gas charges? Since April when they started doing pipeline work on my street, my bill has doubled to $175/mo. This is in the SUMMER! All I really run is a Hot water heater, rarely use stove.

  • Look at your detailed bill to compare usage and rates

  • Lisa Hibbard Avondale/Logan Square Resident

Check to make sure someone isn't stealing your gas. If you're unsure about how to do this, contact People's Gas.

  • Jacob S. is right. As of last month, I am being billed monthly, as opposed to bi-monthly. The amount owed for one month, however, is now within $1 of what I was paying for two months. So yes, the rate has DOUBLED.
