screaming man near pratt beach

hi all, anyone else notice the episodic screaming going on around pratt beach over the last 3-4 days? there's a man (50s-60s, grey hair, black coat) walking around from park bench to park bench, clearly with some kind of mental disorder. he'll start shaking faster and faster before screaming at the top of his lungs. super loud. he's out there yelling from 10 am well into 2-3 a.m. i feel awful for him, is there some sort of mental health service hotline/clinic i can call? i don't know what can be done really, and i don't want to call the police if he's not harming anything other than my sleep.

Drones in my neighborhood?

I need an outsiders perspective here. Would you support consumer Drones flying over your neighborhood in Rogers Park capturing footage of illegalities going on in areas known for crime? Seriously, I'm considering a consumer Drone with the capacity to fly a few miles and capture ultra high resolution video of illegalities in 'hotspot" areas. I'm leaning towards the DF-X6 model (see attached). All this would be in an effort to turn around the South Side community I live in so that the quality of life is improved. What say you? Is this a crazy Buck Rogers ambition here or is it something you would support?

It's hooker season again

They seemed to disappear as winter arrived. Just noticed they are drifting back into my neighborhood again. Two of them were actually sitting on the back steps (leading to the basement) of my building just before noon on July 4. I came back a couple hours later and there was a wet nap and an unused condom in a wrapper lying on the steps. Nice. Saw another one ambling down my street with a couple of male friends the next morning just before 6:00 a.m.

My question is, what's the most effective way of getting these, ahem, ladies out? Police? (311? 911?) Alderman? Any other suggestions?

Howard "L" Station Cleaning

I was wondering if anyone else noticed how nasty the Howard station is lately? I know it's NEVER spotless and many "L" stations never are but I feel like it's been in rare form. Everything is filthy and smells of urine among other things.

Does anyone know if the cleaning has been halted or lessened due to the budget issues? Is there anything that we can do to address this? It's terrible that people have to travel through this day in and day out.

  • The station is definitely dirtier recently. People have been working overtime to urinate, and even defecate, in corners.

I sent in a complaint to CTA customer service regarding the two restrooms on the first floor (South entrance) that they will not allow customers to use, as I see this as simply an issue of human dignity. It just makes sense for the CTA to provide restroom facilities that are clean and safe.
As far as the homeless encampments in Uptown, I believe we should be looking for solutions there too. The nice part is, we can do both. Clean the Howard station and address the homeless encampment in Uptown.

What happens to PB funds when the project is put on hold or cancelled?

Seems several PB approved items have been placed on hold or cancelled. Seemingly 750 k in on hold/ cancelled items over 6 PB elections.

105k for 15 bike racks.
Bike lanes on Clark from Howard to Albion unknown $$.
Coblestone replacement cancelled due to cost.
Sheridan road pedestrian safety study was cancelled.

Looking at the PB site it is not clear what happens to allocated funds that are not used for the Democratically voted funds.

  • Thanks for the Uptown perspective Jeffey. Your concept of PB isn't quite right because you don't live here and actually participate in it. But your view from UPTOWN is understandable. If we did PB in your neighborhood we would find homes for the people who live in tents underneath the Lake Shore Drive overpasses. That's the first thing we would do and I am surprised that you aren't working on that Jeffey.

  • Helen NoH North of Howard for 55 + years

Live, the $300,000 Jeffrey referred to is obviously the $300,000 of menu money that the alderman keeps control of for cost overruns on PB projects and emergencies.

Lost cat (Little Boy) found!

I posted this in the existing thread, but it's not sending me an email notification that a new comment was posted, so just in case it's not notifying anyone else - I'm posting it here.

I guess Judy's so happy and relieved - she hasn't been back here to update, so I hope she won't mind if I report that Little Boy is back home - and in pretty good condition! I know (like me) many of you take a very personal interest when pets are missing. This poor guy who was recovering from surgery was gone for two weeks, so this is an especially happy (and lucky) ending.

Off leash dogs on the beach

There seem to be a lot of dog owners allowing their dogs off leash in public places like the beach. Just yesterday I could count 4 different owners letting their dogs run amok on the sand during my morning walk. One of them even did it's business and the owner didn't clean up. This is illegal, right?

  • Can't understand how Lib, who's only post ever was about illegal drinking on the beach, would thumb down my comment. Double standard on laws much, Lib?

  • Pedro Garciano RP is not a liberal utopia. Sorry.

At what time was that, Donald? Because I was there yesterday with my dog (no leash same as always) and I didn't see any cop.

Illinois Lawmakers Override Governor, Pass Budget For First Time In 2 Years
Lawmakers in Illinois have enacted a budget for the first time in more than two years, overriding a veto by Gov. Bruce Rauner and overcoming a last-minute delay at the Capitol. The crucial override vote was delayed after authorities received a report of possible hazardous materials, prompting an investigation, The Associated Press reports.

Sure, the last 30 years was a period during which Democrats in the Assembly made a lot of stupid moves--but more than one Republican governor did as well. In fact, it was Republican Gov. James Thompson who made the first fatal decision leading to the current pension crisis (1989) and then Republican Gov. James Edgar was the one who cast the second fatal blow (in 1994) and then piled on with a series of horrible blunders. In both cases, these governors were working with the Assembly, but they were the governors responsible for the decisions that were made and they were proposing them.

In fact, the entire pension crisis has unfolded exclusively from political decisions that were made under the two Republican governors in question. The state was set during the 1990s. (There's a good argument to be made that worse things tend to happen when the governor and the Assembly in IL are controlled by different parties.)

It has been about two months since this incident.
I was standing the platform. Two teen and one younger child were only others there.

The two tried to distract me so that youngster could take wallet from back pocket. They tried several times.

I pressed assistance needed on platform button twice with no response.

I finally used my cane to get them to move so I could get down to attendant.
I ran down steps screaming and afraid I would fall.

She called police. The perpetrators took incoming train to howard. The police apprehended them.

I took next train to howard and saw police and perpetrators. I went over and officially identified them and they were taken away.

What I leaned:
My wallet is big and just fits in pocket.
I have chain on wallet to belt. This saved me losing wallet and contents.

Pressing the assistance button did nothing. The attendant ignored it twice.

It was not until I got to booth. She could not hear me through sealed/locked booth.

She did call police and found out theses three had been riding the trains to stations far apart and doing same thing

I now will only go on platform just before trains arrive. I am now wary if by my self.

I rely on CTA I no longer can afford a car in the city. I travel early mornings to late evenings often to get to doctors a 2 1/2 hour ride. I also use it to shop or visit friends around town.

Instead of the semi-helpful heaters having real emergency assistance from attendant or cameras on every platform would make a safer environment.

If you see something specious use the button. I did not report lack of response. I was too upset. If no answer by attendant report I did not as I was trying to get to howard and identify perps which I did.

Call our alderman. I was too shaken to think clearly.

  • The attendant at Jarvis not only does nothing but encouraged his friends to cause trouble.
This is the guy usually working Sunday with long braided hair.
He could care less what crimes are being committed.
We had an encounter and it turned out to be a FRIEND of the attendant working just described.

As someone who uses a cane and travels 2.5 hrs to see doctors, you should look into the Pace Bus ParaTransit service, which lets you schedule a trip with special route pickups and drop-offs. They will also pick you up when you are ready to return home. All trips must be scheduled in advance.

This service is designed for senior riders and riders with disabilities.
There are no other eligibility restrictions I know of, but you need to apply so you can be certified as disabled by the RTA.

To the best of my knowledge a trip costs a little bit more than a regular CTA trip.

Over 400 residents voted this weekend at the Art Round Trip Festival to select the logo design that will adorn some of our new bike racks in high traffic areas. Four proposed designs were up for final consideration.

Rogers Park artist Robert Hansen's depiction of the sun rising over Lake Michigan (below) garnered the most votes.

New bike racks were one of the projects approved by the voters in previous 49th Ward participatory budgeting elections and I arranged with the City to set aside a portion of the money allocated to include a distinct logo design for some of the racks in high traffic locations. The four finalists were among over 40 proposed bike rack designs submitted for consideration. All the artists were required to either live in Rogers Park or have a studio located within Rogers Park.

A committee of representatives of the Participatory Budgeting Leadership Committee and the Rogers Park Arts Alliance narrowed down the submissions to four finalists.

To view the four proposed designs up for consideration and the votes they received, visit:

http://www.ward49.com/site/epage/155293_322.htm

If need be, the winning design will be modified slightly to ensure the functionality of the bike racks.

Congratulations to winning artist, Robert Hansen, and many thanks to the over 40 artists who submitted proposals to the competition. It's a testament to the vibrancy of Rogers Park's artistic community.

I would have called 911, but there was already a strong-- and odd– – police presence on Bosworth. On Bosworth and North Shore, a police car with a female officer driving was stopped at the stop sign. At least four cars were lined up in back of her, no one moving or honking. I kept wondering why no one was passing her.

As I walked further down the street, two mail police officers were walking around. Both of them were wondering aloud why none of the cars were passing her, too. They were speculating that the drivers have been drinking and didn't want to pass a police officer. So, that was three police officers out on the street – – for what reason?

After the gunshot, I saw two cars racing west on Pratt, squealing around the corner onto Ashland.

Anyway– – just wondered if anyone else heard the noise?

We got the name of the original owner of the rabies tag but, although his dog is missing, it is an entirely different dog. The tag has evidently been passed along with the collar and we now have no leads. We will also see if there is a microchip and pursue that lead but wanted to get news out through social media.

I would hope our alderman would want input for yet another business opening in a residential area.

  • Bruce_ Comment by Live From Rogers Park, whom you've mute

We employed at risk people and those in transitional situations. They were often my coworkers.
I question the location, proximity to a park, the quantity of units in RP and stability offered.

We are seeing national failures in this effort.

  • Tired of Liars Sick and Tired of Self Serving Lying Politicians

Recovery homes like this can be beneficial.

Rather than worrying about the residents utilizing the park, I would be more concerned that the recovery house would attract drug trafficking to the area as "The Womens Center" at Ashland & Lake often does.

Similarly, I have seen and reported suspect behaivior near the Trilogy Center at Greenleaf & Glenwood where I have witnessedindividuals who appear to be cajoling patients into "relapsing" into the substance abuse which their treatment is supposed to be addressing.

Street Prostitution on Clark from Glreenleaf to Estes

WTF is going on here? Driving home from work tonight, Friday, 07/07/2017 at about 6:30 pm, I observed the usual colony of prostitutes already gathering on the Northwest corners of Greenleaf & Clark, and Estes &Clark and migrating between the two corners along the west side of Clark street in that 7100 block of North Clark street. Even more aggrevating were the two bicyclye cops southbound on Clark along that west side of the street, one male, one blonde haired female, who continued along past these women oblivious to this urban decay which they are sworn to intervene. Our 24th district isn't doing its job and our local elected officials are a disgrace.

  • Why are there so many people here who feel it is okay to make fun of others? Take Omar for example .Everyone should be able to state their opinion without the fear of others picking what they have to say apart.

Go ahead, nit pick your way through my comment...

  • ah yes, that Omar, such a nasty individual... Viciously attacking poor innocent people who are just trying to "state their opinions"--for example, the "opinion" that the drug recovery home is actually for prostitutes and child molesters.

So you think no one should be accountable for saying offensive and factually wrong things on here, HAune?

Looking for a dog-friendly apt near Red/Brown line

My lease is up in Oct, but I'm starting my search early, because it's difficult to find a dog-friendly apartment. My dog is 12-years-old and I have cats.

I'm looking for a place that's a one bedroom plus another room with a door, be it a office/den/junior bedroom, etc. Zero carpeting is strongly preferred.

I'd really like an outdoor space where I can garden. I'll gladly help with landscaping, if the landlord could use the help.

I'd like to be within a 15 minute walk of either the red line or the brown line, with preference for the red line.

If you know of a landlord/building I can contact, please let me know. I've looked for apartments before in Chicago, so I know the websites to try and to walk around looking for "For Rent" signs.

Thanks in advance for your help!

The building across the street from me has lots of resident dogs. There's even a fenced courtyard where tenants allow their dogs to play off leash. It's 3 blocks to the Howard el station and lots of buses and 2 blocks to the lake. I think other Becovic buildings also allow dogs.
