Ald. Arena pledges to bring 50 CHA units to the ward
by BRIAN NADIG Alderman John Arena (45th) has pledged to bring 50 Chicago Housing Authority-sponsored apartments to the 45th Ward by the end of his term in the spring of 2019. Arena and six other aldermen recently signed the pledge as part of an effort that they say will help end segregation on the North and Northwest Side.

'Jefferson Place' 16-Story Apt Tower Approved By City Council Committee
(Excerpt):"Construction of a 114-unit apartment tower in downtown Jefferson Park was unanimously approved by the City Council's zoning committee on Thursday, clearing the proposal's last significant regulatory hurdle.

The tower at 4849 N. Lipps Ave., dubbed "Jefferson Place," would reach 16 stories along the triangle-shaped property's southern edge"..."But the project has been blasted since its unveiling by a large and vocal group of neighbors, led by the Jefferson Park Neighborhood Association, whose members say the tower is an ill fit for a community dominated by single-family homes.

Fifteen people testified against at least some aspect of the proposal on Thursday, with several Jefferson Park residents telling the Zoning Committee that the project is too tall and too dense for the Far Northwest Side neighborhoods.

Association member Colleen Murphy, of the Jefferson Park Neighborhood Association said Arena had not consulted the residents who live near the development.

“We want to maintain the character of our community,” Murphy said.

Other speakers told the committee that the project’s “extreme density” would worsen traffic and overcrowding at area schools, which are already packed to the rafters, according to data released by the Chicago Public Schools.

At one point, opponents tried to shout down one of the three supporters of the project who spoke to the committee, prompting Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) to admonish them to be respectful.":

“We can no longer allow this status quo to continue,” Arena said. “I have heard the opposition. I am listening to the broad swath of my community that is demanding economic development.”

Arena charged association president Bob Bank — who told the committee that the development had too many parking spaces and was too dense — was motivated by racism and represented “a minority of the community.”

“2019 is what you do about it,” Arena said, answering a question posed by one of the opponents to the committee about what he could do to stop the approval of the development.

The zoning change that green-lights the proposal is expected to be passed without debate by the full City Council during its next meeting on Wednesday."

Field of WEEDS????!

So disappointed! I took my son down to watch the kids playing baseball at Steinmetz, what a joke!!!! The grass was at least a foot high! The poor kid in the outfield lost a ball among the uncut grass and weeds. Are you kidding me? These kids are trying to stay off the street and play sports - this is the support we give them? Get a lawnmower over there for goodness sake! CPS, the city, whoever is responsible should be ashamed and embarrassed of themselves! Let's get it together folks!

  • Did you contact the school or the athletic department? Maybe they need some parents or community members to make some calls to the school board or the Alderman.

  • Congrats Steinmetz on the upgrade coming your way!

Someone left a copy of a letter of a proposal to put a full service car wash on the corner of Gunnison and Nagle on property of Elliots. The location is in Hardwood Hgts. I live in Chicago (JP) less then 100 ft. from where car wash will be if approved. I know the property has been vacant for some time but this is not the type of business we need here. I am very concerned what will happen to my property value and quality of life with the noise all day and evening. There is also the problem with traffic. The entrance and exit will be on Natchez which means a lot of cars coming and going down Natchez. I will be calling Ald. Arena to see what can be done to stop this. The letter also has the mayor of Hardwood Hgts. phone number to voice concerns over noise and traffic.(Mayor Arlene Jezierny @ 708-867-7205). There is also going to be a public meeting but i haven't found out when it will be.I will be calling the mayor today to get more details. If anyone has any idea's on how to proceed to get this stopped please let me know. Thanks Jim

Dog Walker Needed

Hi,

I have recently adopted a pooch and looking for a reliable dog walker a few days a week. We are located near Kedvale and Byron. Does anyone have any recommendations of walkers they use or have used before? Currently we are using Wag, but open to other options of companies or people running their own walking business. We would be interested in either one on one walks or a walker that takes more than one dog at a time as he is very social. Prefer someone comfortable with extra large breeds as well since he is a Great Dane.

Thanks!

  • We use Snappy Paws for our medium sized dog and they are great! Very flexible and accommodating to our changing schedule.

  • Misplaced Texan Fourth Year In PP

Another happy Snappy Paws customer here. We have two larger dogs. Snappy Paws are VERY dependable, flexible, and reasonably priced (in my opinion).

Proposed Chicago Homeless Housesitter Program (CHH)

How we might salve two open wounds by applying them to each other...

To the Honorable Aldermen and Mayor of the Great City of Chicago

June 20, 2017

How can we morally as a civil society allow these two images to exist side-by-side?

An open proposal for the establishment of the "Chicago Homeless Housesitter Program"

https://www.gallantgoose.com/proposed-chicago-homeless-housesitter-program-chh/

  • This is the craziest idea I've ever heard. I said the same as Beeb. Why not have the banks just fork over a grand a month to the homeowner to NOT go into foreclosure? And this idea that either a bank AGREE to this, or the city will confiscate their property is EXTORTION!.But then that's how this cities politicians roll, isn't it?

  • paul in jefferson jefferson park resident

Wont work but , the city should hire some of these people and put them to work to solve the problem. Some of the homless gave up look around the six corners , wait till business move into area are they going to work at Binny's or allowed to sit around and beg?

Central and Waveland

I was just on Alderman Villegas's web page and read that he is meeting with the developer this evening. We hope that the developer will build something there that benefits the area with economic development. We don't want any thing like they are doing in the 45th Ward.

  • Gardener Portage Park

As a nurse practitioner and resident in the immediate area, I'm absolutely in agreement with this plan. We need this type of facility in the area; the population is aging and there are many seniors who need assisted living because of declining mental capacity. Anthem has an excellent reputation and should be a good neighbor. The artist's rendering looks like the facility will blend well in the 'hood.

  • In addition to filling an urgent need for senior housing, its close proximity to a hospital is another plus for the building occupants/residents.

Try contacting the cell phone service provider again. Tell them you found a lost phone, and offer to give them the IMEI number located by the battery, or SIM card number. Also give them your name and phone number, and ask them if they can contact the owner and relay your information to them. This way, they don't violate any privacy laws by giving their contact info directly to you. And chances are, the owner will have already contacted the cell phone provider letting them know they lost their phone, so they should be aware of it. If that doesn't work, I would drop it off to one of their retail stores (if they have one).

  • Also, if you keep the phone charged and on, the owner may try calling it, so just answer any incoming calls, and maybe the owner or someone that knows them will be calling it. You can still answer calls whether it is locked or not.

Please keep your dog out of my back yard

To the people who consistently walk their dog off the leash on the 5400 block of Warwick, please stop allowing your dog to use my back yard as your dog's pooping place. My yard isn't fenced but that doesn't give you access to my property. Today it was twice, once before 7am, the other between 4-5 pm. There's an incident every single day. Next contact will be to Animal Control.

Thank you.

  • Soo, soo sad either way. I see soo much of it when walking my dog. Sometimes the grass hides it when high, but my dog definitely finds it and sniffs it. Yukkk!! Yes, I have heard people doing that by putting all the poop in the offender's front yard. Maybe not nice but I heard that they don't do it again. Yay!!!

  • Walked out of my yard this morning to a steaming pile on my sidewalk! I left it there. Let everyone enjoy it! When I came home after work, it looked like somebody had stepped in it. If we all do this, it may force the rest of the neighbors to take action.

it is a lot to estimate without seeing what is being started out with in where pipes are, is there an existing bathroom, wiring, existing lights etc. also if you are just painting walls and floor or adding insulation drywall and a floating floor, suspended ceiling or painted rafters, adding electrical outlets, also do you have electrical or do you need to upgrade your service panel.

I would say on the low end assuming walls, electrical, bathroom, paint looking at around $10,000.

you could drop $6,000 in just making a bathroom if there is none already and you are just adding one.

Just want to throw my 2 cents in here. If you are trying to improve the value of your home for resale, finishing your basement to add bathrooms and living area does not pay off. Most people don't want to hang out in their basement, and aren't willing to pay much extra for a finished basement. If you do spend $10k to finish your basement don't expect to be able to sell your house for $10k higher. If you are finishing your basement for your own enjoyment knock yourself out! Building a porch

I'm looking for recommendations for
1) someone to build about a 4ft x 4ft back porch
2) materials to use (pressure treated vs cedar vs synthetic)

I'd also appreciate any tips or suggestions for this project.
Thanks!

Tribune article on Property Taxes by Cook County

Has anyone read this article? I'm really surprised i haven't seen any comments.
http://apps.chicagotribune.com/news/watchdog/cook-county-property-tax-divide/

More reason to appeal, appeal, appeal!! They have no idea what they're doing in the Assessors office or County board. Sounds like a lot of shooting in the dark and hope it sticks. The less people know the more they get away with it. My home was overvalued. Please appeal it benefits us all.

The Tax Divide | An unfair burden
In Chicago's West Garfield Park neighborhood, Gail Bates knew there was something wrong with the county's valuation practices as soon as she opened her first mailing from the assessor. A caseworker for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, Bates purchased her two-flat in 2009 for $119,000.

  • Lets all be honest here..This financial disaster began during the Daley years. Ya, for the most part the city looks nice, but at what expense..I'm certainly not a fan of Emanuels' , but he inherited this mess. Emanuel is having to "play catch up" with all the obligations the city owes. Daley basically sold all of the revenue streams; than spent the money without paying the bills that were due. Again, not a fan of Emanuel, but I don't know how Daley can even show his face in this town

PPNA June Public Meeting

PPNA Public Meetings are usually held on the third Monday of each month. Because our June Public Meeting date falls on the same date as a meeting to gather input on the redesign of the Jefferson Park Transit Center, we are canceling our public meeting and encouraging all residents to attend that meeting instead as the transit center is an important asset to the Northwest Side. The meeting details are as follows:

Jefferson Park Transit Center Community Meeting
Monday, June 19, 2017
6:00-7:30 p.m.
@Copernicus Center Annex, 5214 W. Lawrence Ave. (the annex is east of the main theater entrance)
