Block Party Ideas

Any ideas on some fun stuff to do for a Block Party?

  • central park 5 no profiling!

I here one block party in the 45th ward had a good size pinata that was gussied up with a likeness of an arena, "tiny hands" and all. It was a big hit. Make that many, many, hits.I understand Uptown Littleton was brought in to do the artwork.

  • Love that piñata idea! A big rat tail off the back of it would make it even better and more authentic! It would really be satisfying for the adults in the crowd! Don't know if candy would come out of it, though. It may just be full of ..... you get the idea!

Two broken legs, abandoned by owner

I normally do only cat rescue but, on my way home from PAWS Intake on 26th Street, I came across a dog who had been hit by a car. I couldn't just drive past.

Diamond suffered two broken back legs after being hit by a car on Friday 8/18. The driver slowed down to see what he hit, but he did not stop. The dog laid on the side of the road unable to move. A group of young men hovered over her, discussing what to do.

Amazon HQ2

Is Chicago in line to win the Amazon HQ2 sweepstakes? How would this affect the city? The Lincoln Yards site along the Chicago River has been most talked about. The site will have a new Metra stop, water taxi and 606 trail extension. So what about housing? The addition of 50,000 jobs will obviously increase demand. In the seven years since Amazon established it's first HQ in Seattle, home prices are up 83% and the average median price for a home is 700k. Average median price for Chicago is 306k. Anyone owning a home now could see a huge jump in equity. Same for anyone who buys before Amazon announces the winner next year.

You mean the same city unions whose members are required to live in the city?

Likewise, the county union employees who are required to live in the county?

So you're saying those wages are earned by your neighbors?

  • I'm sure Rahm is doing this out of the goodness of his own heart. Right! Take a wild guess what companies will be involved in the construction? Kinney, Pepper, Walsh, etc. All donors to Rahm's campaign fund! All vendors will be connected also. Can you say Midway & O'Hare?

Calling the Cops on the Metra Station Homeless

I called 911 to report the people sleeping on the steps at the JP transit station's Metra platform stairs during yesterday morning's commute, and they're gone now. When the homeless are there, the area smells like urine and there's frequently garbage or other nasty stuff getting in the way of commuters. Lest you think I'm heartless, I worked with the homeless as a psych tech in a mental hospital, working for the City of Chicago's DFSS, and as a consultant with the CHA. I'm well aware that the great majority of homeless are mentally ill and that treatment options are under funded. But we still need to force them into treatment (via getting the police involved). They often won't go without being forced.

SKUNKS

Can anyone suggest on how to get rid of skunks?
There is a vacant house next to us and I've seen 4 skunks
in there yard 2 adults and 2 small skunks. Anyway I've called the city and
they have done nothing! It's difficult to sleep with that strong odor coming through
my house even with our windows closed. It's always around 2 in the morning too.

Ald. Arena pledges to bring 50 CHA units to the ward
by BRIAN NADIG Alderman John Arena (45th) has pledged to bring 50 Chicago Housing Authority-sponsored apartments to the 45th Ward by the end of his term in the spring of 2019. Arena and six other aldermen recently signed the pledge as part of an effort that they say will help end segregation on the North and Northwest Side.
    http://nadignewspapers.com
  • Rose, they had a better location for this, but the residents of Portage Park went berserk at the meeting and the Alderman halted the project. That's when Arena saw opportunity to make himself into some sort of knight in shining armor and got into the ear of the developer.

I hope Arena is in support of the tiny houses the city wants to put on EMPTY LOTS for homeless folk.

Shooting on Warwick & Marmora

On 09/15 at approx. 11:30 a.m. gunfire erupted coming from 5858 W. Warwick. Heard two volleys of 5 to 7 shots. Within minutes our neighborhood was swarming with police from 16th. District. The efficiency and professionalism shown by our officers was reassuring that they were indeed protecting and serving us well. The location of the incident is now being watched by many eyes of disturbed residents.
Myself, I am confident that our neighborhood is indeed secure and the drug dealers are being watched closely by all...24/7.

They gave us 3 different diagnoses with parts needed that ranged from $59 to $469. A different one would come to install part ordered by previous one and come up with different diagnosis. Carl walked in and fixed my problem in 15 minutes. No parts were needed. He's also fixed a problem with the cooktop on our gas range. Never had him here for washer or drier, but I've heard great reviews. He's reliable and very reasonable. I couldn't recommend him more!

So our next door neighbors and their kids think they own the block. They have no respect for others' property. Aside from their garbage ending up in our yard (from eating/drinking soda and throwing the wrapping/cans on the ground or over the fence on our property), our bigger issue is with them causing physical damage to our home. I understand that kids are kids - we have a 4 year old, but they insist on playing soccer or baseball either in front of our home or in their driveway. Either way, the balls always end up hitting our home and windows. We just replaced all of our windows including a large bay window (which cost a pretty penny) and we are getting ready to put new siding on. But I'm constantly out there talking to them about not playing ball in the sidewalk and hitting our house; there is a field 3 blocks away. These kids (ranging from 7-13) don't give 2 sh*ts about what I tell them (I'm always being polite and respectful when I speak to them). Their parents also don't care because they are usually outside and can see that the balls are hitting our house, cars, etc. and yet, they don't do anything about it. they only yell at the kids if the ball hits their home/car.

Anyways, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect others to respect your property and not cause damage to it. Is there anything else I can do? This may seem petty to some but it really pisses me off.

New Lead Partners for Northwest Portage Walking Museum
The American Indian Center (AIC) and the Chicago Public Art Group (CPAG) have joined PPNA as lead partners to work on realizing the walking museum. Their assistance is key as they bring important expertise and organizational capacity to this project. CPAG has applied for a grant from the Chicago Community Trust to fund two museum installation sites at the Chicago and Des Plaines Rivers and will learn in late September if the grant has been approved. Together with the AIC and CPAG, we have convened a steering committee with representatives from other organizations that have also joined the effort to advance this project.

Northwest Portage Walking Museum Represented at Chicago Biennial
PPNA is also excited to announce that Perkins+Will, a Chicago architectural and design firm, has offered their design services to support the walking museum. They have taken up the idea in a big way, creating design concepts for the walking museum that will be on display as part of the Chicago Biennial Between States exhibit at the Chicago Architecture Foundation Gallery at 224 S. Michigan Ave. The exhibit is free and open to the public from September 19th to December 31st and we encourage all to attend.

Looking for a recommendation

Looking for a recommendation for someone to redo the old glazing (and then repaint) on our wooden double-hung windows. Glazing is old and cracking and time to redo. Want to get done before the winter.

Has anyone had this done recently? I don't mind removing the windows and taking them some place too if necessary to save a bit.

But thanks for any recommendations.

  • OParker Native Chicagoan

If you're removing the Windows I believe Ace will glaze them.

  • Accurate Glass at Montrose and Kedzie will glaze them if you can remove them. You can give them dimensions and they can quote you over the phone.

ATT Fiber (Gigapower) vs Comcast Xfinity

Looking for anyone that has had experience moving from Comcast Xfinity to ATT Fiber (Gigapower) Service. For clarity, I'm not talking about ATT DSL nor ATT Uverse.

I have no illusions about customer service - I know they both rate mediocre there. I also am not so concerned about cost comparison. It's really more about the install, uptime, consistency of speed the ISP is delivering. If all evils are about equal I'd make a move to take advantage of the increase in speed ATT Fiber provides.

Any personal experiences anyone can share will be gratefully received. Thanks!

  • Nate, what speed do you normally get from the fiber? Is it close to their advertised speed? Thx.

  • Also how much are the fees and taxes for the fiber service?

There is a vote at next weeks county board meeting. Please call your commissioner and tell them to vote NO for this tax. This tax is nothing more than a tax to keep the bloated county government going.

Get rid of the 5150 building plan. It is not at all virtuous for the residents who would move in there. Find a better location with easy access to a park and whose residents would feel like they are part of a neighborhood. 5150 has the Kennedy Expressway and various industrial buildings as their neighbors. If built, it will be near the busiest intersection in Jefferson Park. I would not move my children there. Nobody will choose to pay to live there. it will end up exclusively with voucher residents who are there because they have run out of choices not because they want to be there.

Since your chances of becoming Aldermen are dimmer now, will you be satisfied being a Lt. the rest of your CPD career? Will you move to a ward where they residents don't know you or your failed past? Opps! The Internet is forever isn't it? And nearly everyone has access to it. t looks like that option is off the table.

How do you think those closely examining the CPD, including the press,, activists ,and the public, will respond to you being promoted with your past? Will the Mayor want to tarnish his political career (any more than it is already) by allowing you or other officers with a like past, to get promotions, no matter what yous other previous job record or Captian's test results. Remember the mayor is in FAVOR of various city affordable housing efforts and used to work for the CHA earlier in his career. The Mayor is also repeatedly on the public record OPPOSING discrimination, which his what some think the Jefferson Park NIMBY's are really about. Do you really think that the Mayor would risk being seen as police reform hypocrite at election time, just to get you better pay and pension? I don't think he would. He would be foolish if he did. Mission accomplished! Central Ave repainted both directions from Higgins to NWHighway!

I want to thank Tiffany Liner
@cityofchicago for her help on working with me and CDOT since the end of March on getting the lines on Central repainted.

The issue I raised was how during rush hour, cars would often drive 2x2 wide going south on Central to Goodman. Then both cars would try to make left turns on to Goodman, a clearly marked single lane. All of Central is one lane going south from Higgins to the bridge just past 90 before NWHighway and back.

This might not fix the problem but at least now if someone tries to drive up the right lane and causes an accident you're covered!

My next project is to work on getting a left turn light at Central/Higgins allowing more cars to turn left off Central onto Higgins!

  • @COUNT, "before I say anything"? Why do you presume I would say "did you trim your trees?"

If anything, I would've said "Sorry it didn't work for you. Maybe it's improved over the last 3 years? Take new pictures, use SeeClickFix and give it another try."

    Have you used SeClickFix?...

Have you used SeClickFix? If you did, it would show you a log of all of the times you took pictures and submitted them with a time/date stamp. It also will log the city's status; maybe they disagree it's a city tree? They will tell you.

If you had taken pictures before you cut the limbs down and there was damage you would have proof of all the times you reported it, the pictures, and if the trees are owned by the city proof of damages that may have occurred.

Again, sorry it didn't work for you. I have been very fortunate in using SeeClickFix to have had potholes fixed, my alley apron repaved, Rat/Squirrel chewed garbage cans replaced. I also did some work to get to the right person to help get a section of the street painted. On to the left turn arrow now. :)

Question for Beaubien School parents

Beaubien parents: We recently moved into the Beaubien school boundaries and are thinking of sending our child there next year. However, from their website, we noticed that they have after-school care (which virtually all schools offer) but no before-school care (which I know is not available at most CPS schools). The website states that Beaubien opens its doors at 7:40.

Due to this, however, there is no way we would be able to make to work on time as we would have to drop off our child as early as 7:00 in order for this to work. And our work start times are inflexible.

Any other Beaubien parents face this sort of dilemma? If so, what did you do?

  • Have you called the school office to ask them for suggestions? Its a big school, but it is a community and the office staff may know of people who they can connect you with. Also, i believe that they do serve breakfast at Beaubien so it may be that you can drop off your child early.

  • You should definitely call the school and also start asking around about what other parents do for care. I'm sure you're not the only one in this position.

Nanny-share

I am the nanny for this nanny-share. One of the munchkins I watch is leaving to be with her big sister. I am looking for a child that needs care during the day.
I am located by Addison & Austin. There is more individual attention and less sickness in a smaller environment. If you are interested feel free to contact me via email or text.
