How to keep the paint on streets/lanes visible?

Does anyone know where one can submit a request to repaint the white lines on a street (N. Central Ave) between Higgins & Goodman?

Currently Central is being used as a 2 lane street from Higgins to Goodman causing the cars to be dangerously close together, confusion at the stop sign on who turns left first plus it takes 2x as long to get though the intersection at the stop sign on Central & Goodman.

The lanes on Central going north after Goodman are painted correctly as single file lanes.

Where can I go to ask about updating the white lane markers? 311? Alderman? City of Chicago website?

Thoughts?

  • There probably isn't any money to restripe the streets, fix potholes, repair crumbling viaducts, or keeping schools open..BUT...There's 160 million dollars for new street lights...GO FIGURE!

Use the SeeClickFix app and send pictures via the app. I've had good results.

Water tastes/smells like chlorine

Hello! My husband and I just moved to the area and noticed tonight out water tastes/smells like chlorine. We use a Brita and this hasn't been an issue in the past week (since we moved in). Has anyone else noticed this or has this been an issue before? Thanks in advance!

Ours always does and it's worse in the morning or when no one has been home for a while. Just run the water for a few minutes before you drink it to flush out the pipes (which is a good idea anyway since we live in old housing stock with old pipes and old connections to city supply - flush the lead out too!) I don't drink much of it. Drink bottled water but for cooking, tea, coffee, my dogs ... I always let it run. I let my shower run too before I get in for the same reason. Smells like a swimming pool!

  • Not so bad here. Brita works fine w/very little scaling in reservoir over time. Even so, I think Chicago's tap water is more chlorinated than needs be.

Alderman Arena Speaks For 2 Hours, Never Mentions He Already Signed Settlement a Week Earlier!

On February 9th, 2017, at the Branch Community Church, Alderman John Arena talked for over 2 hours, and never mentioned that he already agreed, in a court settlement dated Jan. 27th, 2017,to support a zoning change that could allow a low income housing project at 5150 N. Northwest Hwy. Is this not an act of fraud upon the community? And by signing the agreement, Arena has a clear conflict of interest. Arena is saving his own skin, at the expense of the constituents he is supposed to represent.

http://nadignewspapers.com/images/Fully-Executed-Settlement-Agreement.pdf

  • Not likely Arena's 100 units of low-income residents at 5150 will "revitalize Jefferson Park" so that's moot.

The underserved senior housing market is no less important than other low-income markets. Would also serve many veterans; plenty are 62+ y/o. Proximity to medical/emergency care is a consideration for all residents but...

The underserved senior housing market is no less important than other low-income markets. Would also serve many veterans; plenty are 62+ y/o. Proximity to medical/emergency care is a consideration for all residents but especially seniors. Developments such as the 5150 project can both serve the community AND fulfill market demand (a necessary component for project viability).

The 5150 project includes 3BR units; cutting back to Studios/1BR/2BR units only could cut its height. Community pushback isn't so much about who's there, but what's there in terms of height; 4-stories or less (like Arena had previously agreed to).

  • So now it's seniors and vets?

I'm pretty sure when it first became public, the PR sell line was that target market was police and nurses. Whatever works I guess.

Zoning Committee adjourns meeting without taking vote on Northwest Hwy project

Alderman Burke raises concern that City Council was not properly notified of lawsuit settlement which led to the project.
Update: Arena aide says that today's delay is a minor steback, and project is expected to move forward after procedural issue is addressed.

Zoning Committee adjourns before voting on Northwest Hwy project
by BRIAN NADIG In a surprise move, the City Council Zoning Committee at its March 27 meeting adjourned without taking action on a proposal for a five-story storage warehouse and a residential development at 5150 N. Alderman John Arena shows he has no regard for his constituents in this video.

I hope some of people that voted for Arena are feeling 'voter remorse,' after becoming aware of how deceitful and insolent he actually is.

The Chicago Teachers Union, SEIU, and AFSCME filled Arena's campaign coffers with massive funding. These left-wing tax-eating parasites made it possible for Arena to send out political mailers almost everyday prior to the election that were filled with utter defamations, smears, and grotesque lies.

These Marxist-lite public employee unions have their fingers so far up Arena's rear end, when they move their fingers, his lips move.

In lieu of any evidence that Arena charged against his rivals, the public employee unions used their well-funded puppet (Ald. Arena) to continuous paint his enemies with the tawdry tactic of relentless repetition innuendo until it spread like a 'mind worm' in the heads of low information voters and knee-jerk liberals. Arena's "Big LIes" via political mailers took on a faux appearance of being credible by repeating the same smears and lies repeatedly, until voters believed it to be the unvarnished truth. I am sure despots the world over were in awe of Ald. Arena's treacherous and unscrupulous conduct.

Don't hold your breath, if you think that the local so-called "Fourth Estate" in media (i.e., The Nadig Northwest Press or DnaInfo) will hold Arena accountable. At this point, they're basically connected at the hip ideologically.

If karma is real, then I look forward to Ald. Arena's "perp walk' into a federal courtroom in the near future. May be you can be "cellies" with the other Chicago Aldermen and Alderwomen that have been found guilty of corruption on distressing regularity.

    You deserve no less.

    Sic Semper Tyrannis!

  • Oh good, Ald Arena will have another chance to up-zone for increased low-income density at the upcoming 4024 N Elston Ave Library/Mixed-Use affordable housing project. :-)

7-story affordable housing project planned for Jeff Park at Milwaukee & Northwest Hwy
by BRIAN NADIG A seven-story, 100-unit affordable housing complex that would be targeted for veterans and working families is planned for a former food processing plant site at Northwest Highway and Milwaukee Avenue. Alderman John Arena (45th) said that the project would help fill a large void in the ward, where there are 85 units that meet the city's affordable housing criteria.

Ald. Ed Burke’s Workers’ Compensation Program Under Increased Scrutiny

He, along with the complainants and some aldermen, believe the program should be taken out of Burke’s hands and the legislative branch altogether and be recast in a non-political role in the executive branch of government.

Ald. John Arena (45th Ward) filed an ordinance to have hearings to discuss such a move.

“If we have a closet that can’t be looked into, that’s a concern,” Arena said. “We need to have oversight of that. But the Finance Committee’s function is to manage the finance of the city, not to manage medical and workmans’ comp issues. It’s just not the place for that to happen.”

Arena and others note that Chicago is the only major city that runs the workers comp system like this – others run it out of their law departments or human resources departments.

Burke fought very hard behind the scenes to pass an ordinance that would prevent Inspector General Ferguson from having the ability to audit programs like this. We’re told by several aldermen there was horse trading offered until the last minute. He narrowly won by two votes.

Wow it was a packed meeting and had an interesting speaker from the city talking about economic development. The owner of a new Buisness was also there to introduce himself to the community. It's at central and grace and will be a bar/restaurant called Easy Street and everyone I spoke with is very excited about it opening in early April and we all hope this is the begging of businesses finally opening in the south part of Portage Park. They have other successful locations one being Pitchfork at 2922 W Irving. It was also attended by both Aldermans Sposato and Villegas. Some of the residents asked Villegas about the status of Central and Waveland. The WPPNA's President also inquired about this and asked who owns it. Villegas said it was purchased by an LLC and has had no one contact his office. After the meeting there were many of us that thought that was kind of odd since the lot was sold in February and no one has reached out to his office. We think this is a little suspicious given the history of the lot.

Handyman Needed For Kitchen Cabinet Alteration

Ever hear the saying "Leave well enough alone"? Well here is one such instance where I shouldn't have altered what was already in place. I gave away all of my white working appliances and replaced them with new stainless steal appliances only to encounter a number of new problems.
The new counter-depth refrigerator is the perfect depth but it is taller than my old one and will not fit into the refrigerator cabinet because of the hinges.
The 18" dishwasher needs a custom built toekick.
Has anyone else faced similar problems after getting new appliances? Any recommendations or handyman referrals?

  • Thank you for the responses. My brother was able to raise the cabinet an inch and a half. The refrigerator looks great now! Still tinkering away with the dishwasher issue.

  • thanks Karen, it is always good to hear the outcomes, updates on these post.

She is trying to teach them to sit before crossing the street (great) except same method. She literally told her dogs 10+ times to sit, no reaction so then she just janks the chain again. Mind your business when you witness abuse? Why?

I respect people who will speak up. It's kind of like that recent viral video with two teenagers fighting and all their friends circling them laughing, recording it with their cell phones. One guy walks down the street and talks sense into them and forced them to shake hands. He said (paraphrasing), "Look at all these people. They're your friends? They're pointing and laughing at you. You're a joke to them. You're mad and they're laughing."

If he hadn't interjected, who knows if one of the kids would have been seriously hurt fighting in the street. He interjected, the kids shook hands, and they walked away. Maybe they'll fight again the next time they run into each other. Or maybe they'll take his words to heart.

But the one thing the innocent bystander didn't do was mind his business and keep walking. He tried to help and to educate.

Tree Trim vs. Removal

I am noticing some of the orange no parking signs from Dept of Forestry. They are sporadic though, not on a full block like I have seen before. Is there anyway to determine if a tree is slated for removal vs pruning? I see one with a blue tag on it (think it means its been treated for a disease), but no markings/tags on the other trees, yet they have the orange signs on them also. Thanks for any info you can provide.

  • Dennis 30 year Jefferson Park resident

No need to be negative, Dan G. Poster asked a simple question. My answer to poster is that I thought trees that have been treated have red tags. Not sure what the blue ones mean, but you can as at the city's website--Forestry.

Ald Arena's Latest Spin: Calling It Veterans Housing. Even Developer Said Only 20 Units For Vets

Now Alderman Arena is selling the 7-story 100 unit CHA subsidized project as housing for Veterans! This has to be a new low, falsely using veterans as a selling point for a project. The fact of the matter is Full Circle Communities proposal for 20 of the 100 units to be exclusively for Veterans is dependent on getting a grant, not from the Federal Government, not from the Veteran's Administration, but from...Home Depot! Exactly how long that grant lasts, and whether Home Depot will continue to offer grants year after year, or call it quits once they have gotten their money's worth of good-will advertising is another question. Alderman Arena shamelessly suggests that there are 3000 veterans in the Jefferson Park area, needing housing; there may be 3000 veterans, but most of them are homeowners.
John Arena signed a court settlement on January 27th, 2017, stating that he will support a massive up-zoning (B3-5) that has brought us this nightmare project. John Arena violated the rights of the property owners when he down-zoned their property from M1-1, which allowed the property to be used as a storage facility, to B1-1 which does not.
John Arena had the owners' permits for remodeling the building for that use rescinded. The owners sued Arena and the City of Chicago because of his actions. They reached a settlement, and that is the one Arena signed, which gets him off the hook, but sticks the neighborhood with this mess.

  • 45th ward residents should demand to see the terms of that "grant" from Home Depot. For the sake of "transparency" of course..Is it open-ended, is there a "sunset clause" ?? What happens if and when the grant stops ??

  • joanie 20+ year Resident of Jefferson Park

Everyone should send Home Depot correspondence about their grant for this building. They have a Facebook page available to leave comments. Let them know what you think about this proposal.

Commission okays zoning for Northwest Hwy-Milwaukee self-storage site
by BRIAN NADIG The Chicago Plan Commission at its March 16 meeting unanimously approved rezoning a 1.54 parcel at 5150 N. Northwest Highway to accommodate a five-story, self-storage warehouse and an unspecified residential development. The hearing lasted 2 ½ hours, and many of those who signed up to speak had to leave before their name was called to testify.

Build that Wall

I'm freaked out about these developments in Jefferson (or is it Gladstone?) Park! As a Portage Park resident we need to build a wall on Lawrence. Keep the horrible 60-year old gangbangers out. It's pretty much the only solution. We'll build it out to O'Hare and that way get to keep Delightful Pastries, Sicilia Bakery, Hagen's, etc. Let Amitabul and Superdawg pay for the dang wall.

Are you a Christian? Were you among the protesters outside of Branch Church on February 9th?

I have an honest question for any Christian who was among the people chanting "No Section 8." It doesn't matter what offshoot of Christianity you follow, your faiths all started from the same guy.

How do you square your beliefs in the teachings of Jesus Christ with standing outside a church chanting about how you don't want poor people moving into your neighborhood?

Side question for Catholics: did you perform Confession before taking part in Communion the following Sunday?

I'm not being snarky. I really want to know.

  • Janet Baker ISON over France (squint!)

Well, there's still time. Is all I can say.

  • Miss Colleen Lives in Jefferson Park

You should not be cutting down the Catholic Church or any other religion. The intention of the church is good and that should be reason to respect it even if you dont subscribe to it.
