Lost Super Sweet Cocktail

Skittles (Skits) flew out of our back door yesterday 4/24. He's about a year and half years old. We are so sad about this. He's a good talker and whistler. His favorite phrase is "Such a good bird". PLEASE if you see him let me know. He even might come to you if you call him. He's completely tamed and friendly. I'm sure he's hungry. We miss him so much.

Ask Geoffrey: Is North-South Divide Between Baseball Fans Real?

Just south of Six Corners in Portage Park where Milwaukee Avenue, Cicero and Irving Park Road come together, a menswear store has a façade that gives away its original use...

Ask Geoffrey: Is North-South Divide Between Baseball Fans Real?
Many believe there is a fault line that divides Chicago, pitting brother against brother in a long-standing crosstown rivalry. But a viewer wonders if that historic boundary is a myth. So, is it really true that North Siders are Cubs fans and South Siders are White Sox fans?

The first is to probably dormer the attic, but only half since our furnace is up there, adding a bedroom and maybe bath. The stairs would probably be added on outside, we have room to do that. The second and arguably less expensive option is to connect our garage to the house (probably only 4 feet away) and then turn 3/4 of the garage into a bedroom, saving 1/3 at the back for storage. We have a parking pad, and would cover that to park. I talked to an architect friend of mine who thinks the slab may not support anything else, and that the city probably won't allow the garage conversion. Thoughts?

I don't think "annexing" the garage into the house is necessarily impossible w regard to the city/codes. Heading east along Foster Ave, almost to Gompers Park there is a very small brick house that sits right on Foster that had a garage attached via a breezeway, and the garage access was via a driveway onto Foster. (which was probably horrific to back out of into traffic). Someone recently bought the place, replaced the garage door w/ a wall and put in windows, and you can tell it is now living space and part of the house. The small yard behind the garage is now a two car parking pad accessed off the ally instead of Foster.

Car parked on apron but in street

I've lived on Belle Plaine near Portage Park for around 8 years and the entire time there's been a long car parked in front of the driveway on Berteau and Lockwood. It's an illegal parking spot because the car blocks parts of the sidewalk as well as parts of the roadway.

I've lived on Belle Plaine near Portage Park for around 8 years and the entire time there's been a long car parked in front of the driveway on Berteau and Lockwood. It's an illegal parking spot because the car blocks parts of the sidewalk as well as parts of the roadway.

I used to walk around it when walking my kids to the school, sometimes slipping on the ice on the apron next to the garage door. Now, every time I drive down Lockwood from Montrose, the car is there, sticking at least a foot into the street, Lockwood.

I've contacted the police twice, and waited a while to do this because it's a pretty lame thing to do, but I'm tired of stopping each time there is a car going in the opposite direction on Lockwood. It's also unlike the neighbors around here. Or maybe not.

In any case, nothing's happened, and I suspect it's because the homeowner is a city worker. There's often an SUV with MV plates in front of the house. Any suggestions about how to deal with this? I can always let it go.

  • Craig E. Friend of Chicago

The worst thing about a vehicle blocking any sidewalk is someone in a wheelchair not being able to get around it.

  • ...and if you go back to my Google StreetView link yesterday and roll up to the cross street and look back you'll see the same car in the same place in August 2016.

Can the city replace my sod that ComEd destroyed?

I've been calling landscaping companies to give me an estimate. When ComEd came through, they replaced the little patch of grass on the corner with clay. Nothing will grow there. One of the companies I contacted suggested that the city may replace it. Is this true? Do I call 311?

If I need to hire somebody, can anybody give me a reputable landscaping company? I tried K.C. Landscaping but the gal never came to give me an estimate. Lost my business. Another one I called said the job was too small. Thanks everyone.

When the Gas Co. decided to install those huge pipes in our street, the company they used ruined not only our grass, curbs, trees and cracked our foundations, but were very messy workers. Concerning our foundations we were told,"Prove it.You have old houses." Their machinery pounded and pounded for days. Huge tanklike machines backed over our cubs cracking them to pieces. Still that way. The pounding broke some gas lines going to homes on the opposite side of the digging. They dug holes to the homes. The grass replacement was suppose to be quality sod. not so. Because I have good Zoysa grass would you believe while I was out the workers cut a 4x6 piece of my sod and stole it. When I asked to have it replaced, the Gas Co. gave me some cruddy sod that still won't grow. I am sure that my complaints and the complaints many of the other neighbors led to the Gas Co getting rid of that company. The new company does not use that pounding machine. My advice is keep after Com Ed. If you are not satisfied, keep calling. The squeeky wheel gets the oil.

Where to buy microgreens?

Is there a store where I can buy microgreens? I haven't seen them at the little markets that I frequent and don't shop the big chain food stores. I have seen them at Farmers Markets at various parks, but am wondering where I will be able to purchase them once the weather changes. Thanks in advance for any info!

Building onto the garage

I saw another post where some folks in the area are looking to connect their garage and turn it into a bedroom. A lot of people were saying that the city would not allow that. Are there city issues against building onto a garage or something? I was looking to extend my garage out a few feet to give me some storage, does that seem like I'll hit some road blocks? Thanks for your help

  • Was able to find out that your "garage" cannot be over 600 sq ft for the standard 30x125 lot. Thanks for all of your help.

  • And Chicago building codes hardly change. Most towns update their codes every 5-10 years so no they do not change yearly. Also, if there is not anything really wrong with the existing garage, only the addition would have to be built to today's code

I live in a 6 unit building with a nice little yard surrounded by a privacy fence. I have a patio set that I keep in the yard. Last year all the other neighbors in the building used my furniture as if it were theirs, no one asked permission. Everyone knew it was mine. I did not mind at first because I didn't use it everyday and I wanted to be neighborly. Some smoked cigarettes and used the table top as an ashtray and butted out their cigarettes on it, left the butts on the table or tossed it on the ground under the table, some left burn holes on the chairs, allowed their pets to sit on the chairs and snuggle up to soak up some rays, kicked their feet up on the table while sitting in the chairs, some have moved the set to position it elsewhere in the yard to their liking, and someone damaged the umbrella which I had to replace- twice last summer.
This time I do not want anyone to use it. I did notify my landlord who is a Chicago police officer. His response to me was that he didn't want to deal with petty drama.
Any advice on how to deal with this?

I've not read all the 31 comments above, so this might just be repetition. First, the furniture denies five other households use of part of what you describe as a small common area. Did the other five households give you permission to mark off space they paid for in their rent?

Second, furniture in a small recreational area shared by five other households in practical terms is yielded to common use. It is naive to expect different.

Third, the impractical cure would be to organize a building-wide pool to buy common furniture which is surrendered to the owner. That's probably not going to happen, but it would help you avoid becoming the building's crazy neighbor.

Catch Basin/Sewer cleaning

Hi All:
Some streets have clogged catch basins. I did the 311 form online and I have noticed some bright green dots on some of them recently. Does that mean they will be vacuumed out? It is not just some leaves around the grate, but the actual hole is plugged. I have cleaned around the grate and the street gutter near me, but it is not helping much. I know street cleaning is coming up, but this may be a separate issue. Does anyone have info? Thanks.
