Two broken legs, abandoned by owner

I normally do only cat rescue but, on my way home from PAWS Intake on 26th Street, I came across a dog who had been hit by a car. I couldn't just drive past.

Diamond suffered two broken back legs after being hit by a car on Friday 8/18. The driver slowed down to see what he hit, but he did not stop. The dog laid on the side of the road unable to move. A group of young men hovered over her, discussing what to do.

SKUNKS

Can anyone suggest on how to get rid of skunks?
There is a vacant house next to us and I've seen 4 skunks
in there yard 2 adults and 2 small skunks. Anyway I've called the city and
they have done nothing! It's difficult to sleep with that strong odor coming through
my house even with our windows closed. It's always around 2 in the morning too.

  • We have a similar problem with a vacant house across our alley. We were told to install motion lights in the yard (which is good for safety anyway) as they don't like light. It worked to keep them out of our yard so we no longer get direct hits. I've heard mothballs work but haven't tried. Our next door neighbor has a home daycare so wanted to be careful.

  • Agnes Groeper Major of Major

Regarding possible drug dealing in alley near Foremen: we had a problem like that near St. Ferdinand a few years back. Police installed blue camera lights and problem disappeared overnight. First one to call is the Alderman 773 794 3095.

Composting

My dear wife wants to start composting. I called the Alderman, but they said they do not have any. Does anyone know of a cheap resource or a giveaway of compost barrels?

Amazon HQ2

Is Chicago in line to win the Amazon HQ2 sweepstakes? How would this affect the city? The Lincoln Yards site along the Chicago River has been most talked about. The site will have a new Metra stop, water taxi and 606 trail extension. So what about housing? The addition of 50,000 jobs will obviously increase demand. In the seven years since Amazon established it's first HQ in Seattle, home prices are up 83% and the average median price for a home is 700k. Average median price for Chicago is 306k. Anyone owning a home now could see a huge jump in equity. Same for anyone who buys before Amazon announces the winner next year.

I've seen neighborhood after neighborhood change over the years: Wicker Park, Ukranian Village, WRIGLEYVILLE, South Loop, Bucktown, Logan Square. All of those use to be gang ridden shyteholes. Not so much anymore and along with all the development and real estate booming...up went property values and thus property taxes. 100's of millions more today that 20 yrs ago. Where did all that money go? Who knows, but, my guess is it's in the pockets of city/county union salaries and pensions. My view is that the city cannot grow out it's way of it's fiscal spending spiral. The more the city makes, the more it spends towards salaries and pensions. Most see Amazon as gleaming ray of hope for this city. Karen Lewis and her ilk sees it as an untapped vein to start draining.

  • Why so anti-union PortageRules?

  • Thomas R Resident of Schorsch Village

Property taxes did go up, that is true. But if you owned property in any of those neighborhoods 30 years ago, you have seen a huge jump in equity. It seems that this upcoming spring might be a great time to buy.

Shooting on Warwick & Marmora

On 09/15 at approx. 11:30 a.m. gunfire erupted coming from 5858 W. Warwick. Heard two volleys of 5 to 7 shots. Within minutes our neighborhood was swarming with police from 16th. District. The efficiency and professionalism shown by our officers was reassuring that they were indeed protecting and serving us well. The location of the incident is now being watched by many eyes of disturbed residents.
Myself, I am confident that our neighborhood is indeed secure and the drug dealers are being watched closely by all...24/7.
THANK YOU TO ALL 016 OFFICERS WHO RESPONDED. YOU ARE AWESOME!

  • We had the same problem but with drugs a they got evicted because of the constant 911 calls. It works stay on it.

  • Michael McDonough Resident of BelCragin

The 911 call taker will ask you your name but all you have to say is that you wish to remain anonymous and your call will still be dispatched to the patrol cars

Is this unreasonable? - neighborhood kids

So our next door neighbors and their kids think they own the block. They have no respect for others' property. Aside from their garbage ending up in our yard (from eating/drinking soda and throwing the wrapping/cans on the ground or over the fence on our property), our bigger issue is with them causing physical damage to our home. I understand that kids are kids - we have a 4 year old, but they insist on playing soccer or baseball either...

So our next door neighbors and their kids think they own the block. They have no respect for others' property. Aside from their garbage ending up in our yard (from eating/drinking soda and throwing the wrapping/cans on the ground or over the fence on our property), our bigger issue is with them causing physical damage to our home. I understand that kids are kids - we have a 4 year old, but they insist on playing soccer or baseball either in front of our home or in their driveway. Either way, the balls always end up hitting our home and windows. We just replaced all of our windows including a large bay window (which cost a pretty penny) and we are getting ready to put new siding on. But I'm constantly out there talking to them about not playing ball in the sidewalk and hitting our house; there is a field 3 blocks away. These kids (ranging from 7-13) don't give 2 sh*ts about what I tell them (I'm always being polite and respectful when I speak to them). Their parents also don't care because they are usually outside and can see that the balls are hitting our house, cars, etc. and yet, they don't do anything about it. they only yell at the kids if the ball hits their home/car.

Anyways, I don't think it's unreasonable to expect others to respect your property and not cause damage to it. Is there anything else I can do? This may seem petty to some but it really pisses me off.

New Lead Partners for Northwest Portage Walking Museum
The American Indian Center (AIC) and the Chicago Public Art Group (CPAG) have joined PPNA as lead partners to work on realizing the walking museum. Their assistance is key as they bring important expertise and organizational capacity to this project. CPAG has applied for a grant from the Chicago Community Trust to fund two museum installation sites at the Chicago and Des Plaines Rivers and will learn in late September if the grant has been approved. Together with the AIC and CPAG, we have convened a steering committee with representatives from other organizations that have also joined the effort to advance this project.

Northwest Portage Walking Museum Represented at Chicago Biennial
PPNA is also excited to announce that Perkins+Will, a Chicago architectural and design firm, has offered their design services to support the walking museum. They have taken up the idea in a big way, creating design concepts for the walking museum that will be on display as part of the Chicago Biennial Between States exhibit at the Chicago Architecture Foundation Gallery at 224 S. Michigan Ave. The exhibit is free and open to the public from September 19th to December 31st and we encourage all to attend.

Martini Club?

Hi, recent addition to Portage Park here! Does anyone know the scoop on Martini Club on Irving Park? It seems to be closed, but then I saw it was open the other night. Is it really, as the name implies, a martini club?

  • I've been wondering what's going on with that place for the last five years. It never seems open. When it is open, it's never busy. Yet they somehow stay in business. I was hoping they'd sell and we'd get a new or different type of bar or lounge. I've only been there once.

  • I believe Mikes Ale House was in that location prior to the martini club. My wife and I went in there when it was Mikes and loved it. It was a cute little bar with a few tables and a nice hardwood floor. We would go and have some nice...

I believe Mikes Ale House was in that location prior to the martini club. My wife and I went in there when it was Mikes and loved it. It was a cute little bar with a few tables and a nice hardwood floor. We would go and have some nice bar fare and a few drinks. There was a little kitchen in the back. It was a beautiful little place that seemed like a nice spot for couples in our neighborhood. Now they moved down where Tony and Lil's was at and I have never been in there. Looks more like a bar for single drinkers, with a pool table and a bunch of people hanging around out front smoking. I wish they never moved.

Needing to liquidate our Quinceanera Gowns

I have a bridal and social occasion shop in Portage Park (Kasia's Bridal & Special Occasion Boutique). I am looking to liquidate my quinceanera gowns/department to reinvest in divisions we just seem to do better in and that's bridal, bridesmaids dresses, eveningwear and prom. I am not sure how to better market these beautiful gowns other than just by word of mouth, at this point. We have some 800 beautiful ball gowns in-stock, in various colors and sizes. All are brand new or like new, that I am willing to sell at 50% off, making them less expensive than any other shop (or website for that matter). If you're looking for a gown, or know someone celebrating an event in which a gown like this is customary, please pass our name along with this 50% off promotion - I would love to re-merchandise our store to cater to what sells better.
Thank you in advance and cheers!

  • @Kathy L.: If you make a post on your FB page, PPNA would be happy to share it.

  • I posted it earlier today on my @kasiasbridal Facebook page, Instagram and on Twitter. Thank you to everyone passing this along, it's working - we have people calling booking appointments and walking out with smiles and gorgeous gowns!!! Thank you - would love to sell all of these!!

ATT Fiber (Gigapower) vs Comcast Xfinity

Looking for anyone that has had experience moving from Comcast Xfinity to ATT Fiber (Gigapower) Service. For clarity, I'm not talking about ATT DSL nor ATT Uverse.

I have no illusions about customer service - I know they both rate mediocre there. I also am not so concerned about cost comparison. It's really more about the install, uptime, consistency of speed the ISP is delivering. If all evils are about equal I'd make a move to take advantage of the increase in speed ATT Fiber provides.

Any personal experiences anyone can share will be gratefully received. Thanks!

  • Nate, what speed do you normally get from the fiber? Is it close to their advertised speed? Thx.

  • Also how much are the fees and taxes for the fiber service?

Call your county commissioner to tell them to vote no for the sugar tax

There is a vote at next weeks county board meeting. Please call your commissioner and tell them to vote NO for this tax. This tax is nothing more than a tax to keep the bloated county government going.

  • You should be really upset with the Federal Government for givings subsidies for corn syrup. Your money is being used to create the sugary drinks and then you're being taxed additionally for their purchase.

    That's double taxation baby!

  • Sign the petition.

Really that bad?

Good morning everyone! I read EveryBlock daily for Portage Park / Six corners. Lately I have been seeing more and more comments about the area going downhill. Is this the case?

It seems things are happening that are positive in the Six Corners area. New small businesses etc. (onviously with the exception of the bank hole). The neighborhoods still seems quiet and contain a very tight community feeling which is hard to find. What are your thoughts?, I am interested!

What to do Nallon seems like a neighborhood is going the way of Rogers Park Or uptown… Never hurts where we used to live and move because of that same reason. Also and I should probably start a new post for this one how come portage Park playground playground is so trashed? I've noticed it becoming increasingly damaged and no one seems to care park district isn't doing anything in terms of upkeep or maintenance the other day I was there with my daughter and they actually had police tape around the monkey bars it's actually dangerous for kids.

Feral cat

I am trying to trap a feral cat so that she can be spayed. I have a trap that she has avoided. Any cat trapping experts out there? Or any inventive ideas? I seem to be able to trap possums just fine😏

  • Congratulations!

  • That's great! I'm so glad you were persistent. I hope she can find a home, but at the very least, she will be spayed. We successfully trapped a feral who ended up living happily in our home for over 10 years. Even though he was feral, he adjusted and loved our other cats. He warmed up to us in his way after a long time. Good luck!

Where you robbed or had ladder stolen on 9-3-17 @approx 8:20?

Robbed or Ladder stolen on 9-3-17 @approx 8:20? Linked video taken from IP camera showing 5 teenagers dumping wooden ladder by my garbage can. Chances are ladder was stolen or used for vandalism?

Theif in portage park

I knows it's nothing major but it really stinks when you take care of your property with flowers, nice plants and someone thinks it's ok to just steal something.
So if you have a neighbor that now has a fern like one in photo and they didn't have one yesterday. They're a thief!

  • Back when they were popular, I had a concrete goose (dressed!) on my front porch, that was stolen. That thing was pretty darn heavy and up 6 or 7 steps from ground level Somebody's mother must have been having a birthday.

  • cheesecake chick i want to be the person my dog thinks i am

lol my neighbor used to make seasonal outfits for her concrete goose, but they kept getting stolen!
the yellow raingear and the Bulls uniform she made were gone in a week!
they couldn't take the actual goose though, because her husband had figured out a way to "fasten" it to a heavy base.
