Did you receive mail ?

I received no mail Fri 1/6 or Sat 1/7. Called the PO on MW HWY at 2:00 Sat to inquire. I was told that `13 carriers called in sick on Fri and Sat. Also told that the carriers that were working would be out 'till 8:00 PM Sat to get it all delivered. Still
no mail.
Really? You give people a good job and that's what they do when it gets a little cold.
I spent years working outside in all kinds of weather. They get no sympathy or understanding from me.

When people have job security with no personal accountability whatsoever you get the proverbial government worker. Just keeping it real...generally, government workers have their job due to the influence of someone or because of "quotas" and not because of a superior skill set. Most of us on this thread would consider that person of influence to have done us a huge, life-changing favor. Instead, those getting these jobs act as though they are bulletproof...and you can spot those pieces of $#it from a mile away!!!
If u want to get rid of patronage jobs, write your elected officials and tell them you want term limits!
People like Michael Madigan and Tom Cullerton are nothing more than horse-traders in terms of jobs...the more people Madigan, Cullerton, etc. help to employ, the more (presumed) influence they will continue to have.

Here are some notes from the Participatory Budgeting Meeting last night.

Voting will take place next month from the 6th to the 24th at the Ward Office and TBA satellite locations.

Alderman Napolitano and Chief of Staff Vitorrio reported that a lot of great ideas will be on the ballot, and some of the ideas suggested at the first meeting can be accomplished without Aldermanic Menu funds.

A sample ballot from another Ward was distributed as an example, and ours will be very similar. The first item we'll vote on is what % of the funds will be devoted to street resurfacing. Then, individual projects with a brief description and price tag will be listed, and we'll select up to three projects.

Projects will be selected by most number of votes, and how much money remains in the budget after the street resurfacing dollars are taken off the top. This means that the most popular project may not happen due to lack of funds.
Example: We decide that we're going to use $700k of the $1.3M for street resurfacing. The most popular project costs another $700k. That project can't happen since we only have $600k to spend, so the next most popular project that is within our budget will get funded.

Volunteers will be needed at the satellite locations.

This is very exciting and I look forward to seeing what projects we get to choose from!

Only 10 Degrees? Soup At This Cafe Will Cost Just 10 Cents Then (Plus Tax)
PORTAGE PARK - Sub-freezing temperatures are reason enough to spring for a hot bowl of soup, but from now until Feb. 28, a Northwest Side restaurant is sweetening the pot. Through its "Soup for the Price of the Temperature" deal, Mather's More Than a Cafe, a coffee shop and senior center, is tying the cost of its daily soup special to the high forecast in the Chicago Tribune each morning.

  • Well that would be the Belmont Craigin neighborhood, not Portage Park.

New Chicago tax leaves shoppers holding the bag
The classic checkout question - paper or plastic - will soon pose a new dilemma for cost-conscious Chicago shoppers, who face a new tax on either choice. Beginning Jan. 1, a checkout tax of 7 cents per bag will be added at all Chicago retailers - from massive chain stores to mom-and-pops - in the city's latest bid to curb disposable bag use.

Is crime moving towards us?

I'm seeing a constant stream of battery and robbery notifications for the 8700 block of Bryn Mawr. That seems to be a center for criminal activity. But now it seems the same for the 7400 block of Talcott. Is it because of housing prices, all the low life's are moving in to the neighborhood?

You'll Pay More For Parking, Plastic Bags As 2017 Budget OK'd By Council

Don't forget to bring your own bags to the grocery store

Shoppers will be charged 7 cents for every plastic bag as part of an effort to push Chicagoans to use a reusable tote at grocery stores and avoid sending the bags to landfills.

The fee is expected to add $9.2 million to the city's coffers.

You'll Pay More For Parking, Plastic Bags As 2017 Budget OK'd By Council
CITY HALL - With a series of massive tax hikes behind them, the City Council approved Mayor Rahm Emanuel's $8.2 billion spending plan Wednesday without debate. Unlike last year, the budget contains no major property tax or sales tax hikes, setting the stage for it to sail through the council.

  • The current ban on plastic bags failed because stores didn't man up and charge for them. Watch what happens when stores finally charge for them. People will complain and then quickly start bringing their own. We've been doing that for years aside from all other benefits it makes schlepping your groceries much easier.

  • J. Kaminski

There's enough grocery stores and dell's within 5 minute drive in Harwood Heights and Norridge where this plastic bag issue does not mean anything to me. Some of the grocery stores and drug store chains on the Chicago side have gone entirely to paper bags without any markup.

Being in a fight off duty won't get you tripped up but you have to report it. Being drunk off duty won't get you tripped up but if you KNOW you're going to drink you CANNOT have your gun on your person. I'm not condoning nor condemning them for what happened but procedural errors will get you every time. At least they got to work a bit longer and actually left on their own terms.

Package theft

I wanted everyone to be aware of a problem that we have experienced. Twice in the last couple of weeks we received packages that were obviously broken in to and emptied out and then retaped. One was from USPS and the other from FedEx. I was home both times and the FedEx package was handed over to my husband. I know you have to be home to ensure that it is not stolen off your porch but now you have to worry about the contents of the package.

  • I agree. The regular UPS driver usually does ring our bell. Unfortunately with these two items it was stolen in transit, since we were home both times and the package was empty.

  • Squrl Girl, I have never had a problem with USPS, UPS, or FEDEX not ringing the bell when they leave a package. They have all always rang for me. So if they are not for you then something is wrong.
