Senior Citizen Sewer Exemption Denial

So, this is the story. The Dept of Water changed the name on my account billing to my son's name without my permission or request. My name had been on the bill for about 20 years. My son's name is on the check that I use to pay this bill; and, I am guessing that this is how the Water Dept. managed to make their error. So, this is the story. The Dept of Water changed the name on my account billing to my son's name without my permission or request. My name had been on the bill for about 20 years. My son's name is on the check that I use to pay this bill; and, I am guessing that this is how the Water Dept. managed to make their error. To get this discount, my name as owner (which I am and always have been) needs to be on the bill. So, I called the DOW and the "Canadian woman" who answered talked over me and when I asked her to stop and listen to me as I am the customer and citizen that pays her salary, she HUNG UP on me after I waited 20 minutes on hold to speak to one of the "customer" service reps. I then called Alderman Napolitano's office and I have to do the work to change the name back to mine by paperwork and proof of ownership (I have always been the owner). The Alderman couldn't call the DOW and get this done for me? So, because some less than qualified or lazy posterior's DOW EE's error, I have to prove my side of the story. PLEASE... I am sure that he can but did not. I am so disgusted right now that I could do several things that I would be arrested for, I am sure. Who else can I call/write/petition about this? I have paid property taxes for 33 years now and when it is FINALLY time to get a meager benefit (which is hard to do as white person in this city) due me, it is taking an act of congress and much of my time.

  • WOW! thanks for the post. I will make sure that I use the right check book and /or another family member doesn't write a check for me.

  • I was told that you name must be on the deed or property tax bill to have it put in your name. This was when I was applying for the senior exemption. Previously, the bill came in my husband's name and he had passed away. They told me they could not just change the name unless I provided that information.

  • I suggest you go down to the Department of Water (located at Jackson and State in the DePaul Building, basement) to get it straightened out. They are very hard to work with, so you will need patience, but worth it in the end.

Security

Be advised: A little birdie told me that there have been several break-ins in and around Edison and Norwood Park neighborhoods. They get in and get out quickly! Please be sue to lock your doors, whether your home or not. In the event you see anything out of the ordinary, call police. Don't hesitate, just call them. I would believe the police don't mind, because there are many who live in this neighborhood of ours and they want it safe for them and their fellow officers. We....we all must be vigilant for ourselves. The police can't do it on their own. Yes, they need our help, so lets help them and ourselves at the same time.

Thank you.

Attempted Garage Break-in

Last night, sometime between 8pm and 6am, someone tried to break into my detached garage in the 7000 block of West Berwyn. When I tried to enter the garage to leave for work, I found the side door lock damaged. They were unable to get in, but the lock is broken. I filed a police report but wanted to let the neighborhood know to watch out!

  • Unfortunately with all the section eight people moving into the neighborhood, this will become a more common event. When I first noticed this many years ago, I installed a commercial grade steel door on my garage entrance. I also have a steel door and frame on my side home entrance...

Unfortunately with all the section eight people moving into the neighborhood, this will become a more common event. When I first noticed this many years ago, I installed a commercial grade steel door on my garage entrance. I also have a steel door and frame on my side home entrance and I reinforced my front entrance with a strikemaster pro II. This device makes it difficult to kick in your door buying time to set off your security alarm if your at home. I highly recommend a wireless security system. Buy what you want but, I did a lot of research and I recommend Simplisafe. It's wireless, inexpensive, and does what it should when it should. Do your research many popular security systems don't work as you would expect them to. My system has door and window sensors. It has motion and glass break sensors. It has a smoke alarm system that will also alert the fire department. And, it has multiple sirens and panic buttons. You can also get cold sensors for your pipes and flood sensors for your basement. All this for as little as $15/month with no contract. Cameras are coming out within the next few months. If you move it's easy to remove and take with you. For $0/month you can have a system that sounds off but won't alert police. For the $25/month plan, which I chose, I can control it with my phone and I get alerts as to whom is coming in and out of my home as it happens. I'm not affiliated with Simplisafe, I'm just extremely happy with this system. My brother in law didn't do any research and went with a popular company. He locked into a three year contract that will cost him thousands of dollars more than my service. I have many more sensors that always work and I saved a lot of money. Buy a security system, it gave me great peace of mind.
