How does one go about reporting a violation of certificate of occupancy?

I live in a Condo mid-rise. We have a business on the first floor. They have taken over our basement with the blessing of the board. However, they do not pay rent, nor have they signed a lease. When the condo looked at using the basement a few years ago, it was found that we could not use the basement as in doing so it would incur more than $20,000 in cost to get a COO, so we decided not to incur the cost. The business on the first floor decided to take over the basement and not pay the money for the COO (we know this because there are no rails that were needed to get the COO on the stairway). We know that they are using the basement as they have told us that they have several million dollars in inventory and there are lights on in the basement 24 X 7. We know that one year they paid rent to the association as it showed as income in the annual report, after that however they have paid no rent. The board is complicit in this violation.
Any suggestions as to how to proceed to get the business out of our basement would be appreciated.

  • Jeffrey Littleton Paint/Ceramic/Glass

Generally speaking what kind of inventory is down there?
Wouldn't a COO allow for storage of non-perishables?

  • Jeffrey Littleton Paint/Ceramic/Glass

Correction: not having a COO still allow for non perishable storage?

Ald. Cappleman AGAIN LIES About Homeless: Many Uptown Homeless were NOT HELPED by DFSS

WILSON & LAWRENCE LAKESHORE DRIVE VIADUCT REPAIRS
The construction project to repair these crumbling bridges and add new bicycle lanes are now underway. The project includes structural repairs to existing steel beams, repairs to the concrete decks, construction of new parapet walls and installation of shared-use (bicycle and pedestrian) paths on the sidewalks underneath the viaducts. Wilson and Lawrence Avenues will each temporarily be closed to vehicular traffic for a brief duration during nighttime, but not at the same time. Those who were staying under the viaducts are being assisted by the city's Department of Family & Support Services--which has had case workers on site on a daily basis for more than a month--as well as other non-profit providers who specialize in identifying and accessing shelter and permanent housing. I fully support a "Housing First" approach with the goal of finding permanent, affordable housing and then providing connections to community-based support for long-term success. I will continue to work with agencies such as DFSS and non-profits, as well as listen to the concerns of the community at large, in order to meet the needs of all members of our community."

  • Robert Rohdenburg Activist Citizen

Let us all remember that a few years ago, Ald. Cappleman wanted to treat the Uptown viaduct area homeless like pigeons: He wanted the homeless to stop being fed by the Salvation Army food truck near the Wilson viaduct so that the homeless would not congregate there. Prior to that he wanted the feeding the pigeons stopped in a like fashion, with that added factor of sending some pigeons to Indiana to be shot.
This from a former licensed Social Worker turned "progressive" Alderman, James Cappleman.

  • Jeffrey Littleton Paint/Ceramic/Glass

I was at the Clarendon Park meeting tonight

Cappleman is floating an idea to privatize part of the fieldhouse.

Enough is enough...that should go over as well as the wave pool with compressors next the bird sanctuary idea...for real I kid ya not.

A lot of people who disagree with me on a lot of issues are completely done with Cappleman, its a diverse group..

They were together in Chicago, IL. 60618. Contact me with proof of ownership. Thank you.

Stephanie P, have you found Pidgey?

I saw what I believe is a green cheek conure's molted feather on the 1900 block of Wellington, in the street today.

Just a heads up that there must be a lost one out there somewhere around there.

Relocating to Avondale

Hi! My family of 4 is relocating to the Avondale area and would love some area feedback! We are relocating for the Indianapolis area.

Here are a few things I am interested in :
-art scene (My husband is an artist so I'd like to connect with the art orgs.)
-schools (I have two children in elementary school and are currently homeschooling.)
-dining options/recommendations
-general area/community, and any feedback relating to relocating to the area.

Thank you in advance! :)

  • I suggest using clearmap which is from the Actual police department. That area has changed within the past few years but still, I agree with other people that there is a definite gang presence and gang related shootings.

    Hello!
We bought a home at George & Harding 3 years ago. The neighborhood has changed a lot in that time, for the better. There are several families with kids on our block and Koz park is always bustling with strollers and soccer games. It's a very family-friendly section of Avondale. I feel safe walking my dog at night. However, I have witnessed shootings, drug deals and gang activity. There are resident homeless that live in the area nearly year-round. I have cleaned up human feces off our property. The litter bothers me. Rats are a serious problem. Our garage was broken into. Things are getting better, and you'll get more for your money over here, but I would spend some time walking around and sitting in the park. We are happy here but it's not for everyone. Message me directly if you'd like. Best of luck.

Gorgeous, short-haired, mostly white cat with dark grey tail and dark grey ear hanging out in parkways/yards along w Cornelia. Looks well-fed, but no collar; in case he/she is lost, I thought I'd post.

Doggie Doctor in West Lakeview?

Looking for a good dog vet recommendation in the area. Getting our first dog next week. Also any tips from seasoned city dog owners are more than welcome here 🤗🐶
Thanks!

  • I also recommend Dr. Duke at Duke's Animal Hospital. The staff is very upfront about costs which I appreciate. (They even warned me about what costs to anticipate for future puppy visits.) I can get same-day appointments and the staff can communicate via text, email, or phone based on your preference. Above all, my two doggies love it there and that's really all that matters!

It was very dark (9pm in the spring time), but I got a fairly good image of the man who broke into the truck. I've since retained the memory of the man's features, which were distinct, as well as the way he walks. I also noticed when he broke into the truck that he had a toolbox with him.

While witnessing the break in, i called 311 (as I was told to do after witnessing a previous break) but was on hold for 20 min or longer so I hung up. I should have stayed on the phone longer or at least posted something on here, but I did not.

It's 5:40pm now, I have just parked by my house on Barry and see this same exact man park his Mitsubishi crossover across the street from me. It's light out now and I know it's him because he's the same height, has the same hair, has the same strange shuffled walk, same styled jeans, AND has the same toolbox with him.

I took a photo of his license plate. Is there anything I can do about this now????

  • ward greenleaf Smokey and the Bandit, Hooper, Cannonball Run...

  • Could you go to your police station with the information, both present and past> Remember, 911 is for what is happening now; 311 was city services and what happened in the past. Don't listen when they say 311....
Is the original car that was broken into still there? Can you leave a note for the owner saying you have information?
    Good luck and stay safe...

Moving

Hi,
Looking for long distance movers and storage. Moving my 1br apartment east to Jersey City.

Any recommendations? Anyone have a good experience with moving pods? Thanks

  • Yep Kittyhop, they'd be perfect!

  • Take photos of all your best furniture before any long distance move! You may need them for an insurance claim if anything is lost or damaged on the way. My sister lost a beautiful dining room table and couldn't prove it.

Screaming near Melrose and LSD

Does anyone know what happened last night near W Melrose and LSD/ Sheridan? There were extended howling screams coming from somewhere in the area. People in my building and the back of the building on Aldine were out on their fire escapes to look around and we were all yelling to each other asking what happened and that we had called the cops. I didn't hear any sirens though and the screaming stopped, which was the scariest part! It sounded like someone was getting murdered.

  • Tzipora Kinney Chicago Newbie

What time was this? I heard some strange noises last night at some point though nothing quite like you described. Just thought it was some drunk idiot shouting. Like it was odd for sure but I didn't get the feeling someone was hurt/in danger.

Thunk I briefly heard a siren like awhile after the noise stopped. Didn't stick around though. Just seemed to pass through.

  • It was Saturday night, maybe 7pm? Anybody that was home on the easternmost ends of W Melrose and Aldine would have heard it. I just hope whoever it was is okay.

People's Gas rates are up??

Anyone else notice unusually high People's Gas charges? Since April when they started doing pipeline work on my street, my bill has doubled to $175/mo. This is in the SUMMER! All I really run is a Hot water heater, rarely use stove.

  • Look at your detailed bill to compare usage and rates

  • Lisa Hibbard Avondale/Logan Square Resident

Check to make sure someone isn't stealing your gas. If you're unsure about how to do this, contact People's Gas.

  • Jacob S. is right. As of last month, I am being billed monthly, as opposed to bi-monthly. The amount owed for one month, however, is now within $1 of what I was paying for two months. So yes, the rate has DOUBLED.

I'm on Belmont and between St. Louis and Bernard, I had a package stolen a few weeks ago that was a handmade item from my mom for my birthday. I'm thinking it may have been this guy as my husband also saw him riding his bike by the house around 2pm the other day, and it seemed like he was looking at people's porches and sped up once he saw my husband stepping out of the house. Did you report him to the police? If so I would like to know if he ever gets caught in case he still has any packages. Thanks for posting the info!

  • I did not report him because he was riding in the opposite direction I was going. Were police reports made by anyone? Police can only pin this on him if he is caught and police reports are made. The picture of him can be provided to police also. I live around St. Louis and Barry and have packages delivered from the post office but because I'm retired I'm home for the deliveries. I'm sorry that this has happened to you both.

Free to a good home....

I have a multi-story "cat condo," or climbing platform, that needs a home. My cat took one look and turned up his nose. It's like new, barely sniffed at. Covered with light-colored carpet, several perching levels and roost boxes, scratching post, etc. All assembled. No fleas, bedbugs, or roaches! It's big, though, and you'll need a van or SUV to get it to your place unless you want to take it apart. Located near Wrigley Field.

  • Anita W. in Wrigleyville 30-year resident

Thanks for the suggestions. Donating it was my first thought but I decided to give my neighbors a chance before I contacted an agency. If nobody bites I'll give it to a shelter.

  • Harmony House is another non for profit, no kill shelter for cats. I occasionally donate cat items to this place quite often, they would greatly appreciate it and are located on Elston just west of Western on the South side of the street .

Countertop removal

I'm changing my countertops and in need of someone to carefully remove the granite from our kitchen perimeter and island. We are repurposing our cabinets and will save them for the quartz countertop addition. Any suggestions on cost of this type of service or company that provides this service?

Thanks!

  • @d3: Bought the new countertop at Home Depot. They don't do removal just installation.

@Burgess: thanks for the suggestion. I was about to post on CL but didn't have to. I asked the contractor renovating our basement if he knew anyone who would want the granite. Luckily, he did! So glad he will remove and haul away for free :)
