Chicago's Major Healthcare Systems: Is One Better Than the Others?

I'm trying to evaluate the differences between the major Chicago healthcare systems. There's Advocate, Northwestern, Rush, Loyola, and University of Chicago (and probably others I'm unaware of).

I've been seeing doctors in the Northwestern system for a few years, and I'm less than impressed. Northwestern has a reputation for being "world class," and they've clearly invested millions and millions of dollars in their facilities, which are lovely.

But the doctors--from generalists to specialists--leave me wanting more. A lot more. I get three minutes with someone who stares at a laptop screen the whole time, hands me a prescription and a referral, and disappears; there's no follow-up, even for more major things like a brain MRI. ZERO follow-up. It's stunning to me how incredibly hands-off the Northwestern staff is.

Most likely every doctor is like this nowadays, as healthcare's two graph points, cost and quality, continue in opposite directions.

BUT...

Do you have an opinion about which system may be better? Do you use one other than Northwestern and have had good experiences? I know this is an impossibly broad question, but I thought I'd ask.

Post Office in 1600 Block of Devon

A few years ago the Postal Service took over the property (auto repair garage) at 1600 Devon for postal parking. Around the perimeter evergreen trees and some leaf bearing trees were planted and it looked very nice. The people at Canines and Felines did a lot of work to keep the Paulina side of the post office looking nice. Now the weeds and un-pruned trees hang over the sidewalk and hinder people walking along sidewalk.
Some of the weeds are three and four feet high.

The Paulina facility is a substation. It opens late around 11 AM and is not open on Saturday. It's very convenient for buying stamps and mailing packages for those of us around the neighborhood when it's open.

Lost wallet on the 92/Foster

Hey everybody! I'm from out of state and lost my wallet on the bus. It was on the 92/Foster like the title says. It's brown and pretty thick. Figured I'd give this site a try.
Thanks so much!

Large Dog Crate Wanted!

If anyone has a large dog crate that they do not use or any other dog related items that they do not need. I am adopting a 2 year old dog tomorrow and need a few things.

  • Andrew Carpenter Realtor Edgewater home owner and Chicago Reator

He may be lab and bluetick coonhound. There is definitely some sort of hound going on because of his ears. He has mixed white and black hair on his chest as well as a little on his muzzle and a tiny bit on his feet. He should be fully grown but he is super skinny. We will feed him to a healthy weight, maybe another 10 lbs.

  • Have fun with him! He has a happy home now!!

Explosion in Uptown last night!

Around 1AM last night I was woken up but what sounded like an explosion. It wasn't a shooting or anything like that, it was just real loud. I haven't heard anything today about it. So if anyone knows what happened please fill us in on the details. Disturbing!

  • I heard the same thing just 15 minutes ago near Wilson and Wolcott! Two really loud and quick explosions about 5 minutes apart! No idea, but it made me jump both times.

  • I also heard something around 12:15 last night/this a.m. coming from the Winnemac Park-ish area. It made me wonder if they were fireworks.

  • Mare Wilson Avenue Watchdog!

I've heard a few reports that it may have been a transformer, which sounds plausible. They overload when people use too much electricity and then there's a BIG explosion. I wouldn't worry too much, at least we weren't attacked by N. Korea!

Happy Puppy!

Thanks to everyone who posted on my previous crate request! He seems to like his new crate and we cover it with the sheet at night. The sheet is pulled up so he can get in the doors. He has bedding in other areas that he uses sometimes but chooses the crate too.

Gino's North

Gino's North on Granville is no longer serving deep dish pizza. Not sure if this is EveryBlock worthy, but thought you should know. They said too many people complained about the time it took to make the pizzas. It is a shame, I loved their deep dish and drinking wine while waiting for it to cook was part of the charm! Sorry, I feel this is an important post as I always took my out of town guests here lol, and I felt it my civic duty to let the neighborhood know.

  • Kateri in Rogers Park artist at heart

Sorry to hear about the cut. I sure hope Giordanos @ 6836 N Sheridan Rd doesn't drop their deep dish pizza! I rely on it for deep dish pizza for all the same reasons that you folks relied on it from Gino's.

Perhaps if more than ONE person was scheduled to work FOH, this would expedite the dining process. Past 2 visits, the "lovely" bartender was in the weeds all evening barking at us for asking for a beverage because the rowdy stool dwellers could not stop inquiring her at their every beck and call. I have a bartender friend, and I recognize when they're overwhelmed and have empathy.

I cringe reading ^^^ that people should be jailed just because of their intent. Poor Jimmy Carter would be rotting away in some federal prison because he "committed adultery in his heart" and never would have been able to combat river blindness, snail fever, malaria, other tropical diseases or build habitats for humanity. There are some morally tough amigos on this thread.

O'Conner once again

Typical O'Conner--let people know about a public meeting two days after it happens! He is one of the worst public workers ever. The hospital has been an issue for the last, what, twelve years? How much lost tax revenue is that? His ineptness speaks for itself.

  • Dave CPS Teacher

O'Conner seems to be invisible until election time. Both he and Moore are Emmanuel rubber stampers, but at least Moore does valuable things within his ward throughout his term.

  • Except I learned of the meeting, which took place on 10 August, on 31 July from an email blast O'Connor sent to constituents.

Pepper needs a temporary foster home.

Pepper, is a rescue. I've had her since she was 6-months old. She's now eight. Where I'm living -- we cannot be together and this has been very hard on me since she means the world to me. I don't want to give her up so I am desperate for someone to please help and foster her for three weeks in October. (Of course I'd be thrilled to tell you more about Pepper if you're interested in providing a short-term foster home.) Thanks for your time.

  • Does she get along with other dogs? Any illnesses?

  • Hi, she gets along with other dogs just fine. I've taken her to dog beach & park never an issue. No illnesses.

  • I can help. Click on my name, and then on the bottom right you can send me an email.

Air horn at Sheridan and Foster

Does anyone know who the annoying person is who blows the ridiculously loud air horn multiple times near Foster and Sheridan? Or from what building it may be coming from? This is a new thing that happens frequently and tonight it has happened five times already. I would love to call the police but until I can pinpoint the location, its not possible. Thanks for any feedback.

  • Most of the time you hear an airhorn in Chicago, especially overnight, its from the CTA working on train tracks. They use the airhorn to alert the workers when a train is approaching.

  • Tim Sheridan Park

Jackson M. Is correct. It's the CTA working on the Wilson Station. I agree it is very annoying that they do that all day long.

  • I can completely understand if the CTA uses it for worker safety precautions, however, it just went off again. This is in front of my building that faces east and the red line is 2 blocks west of me. It almost sounds like it's coming from Sheridan Rd., the country club or in the parking on top of Mariano's.
