Many of us in Rogers Park are self-taught on the computer (which is not for rookies), proving that our brains might just be better conditioned with age and more adept at seeing the big picture. Please, neighbors, can we keep things upbeat and keep the big picture in mind? Why attract negativity to this wonderful crime-busting social media tool?

Why Does 49th Ward Alderman Joe Moore Miss 66% of his City Council Committee Meetings?

Per an IPI investigative report on committee attendance of all aldermen, 49th Ward Ald. Joe Moore, Chairman of the Housing and Real Estate Committee, has the 3rd worst committee attendance record of any of the 50 aldermen in City Council, attending only 34% of the committee hearings that he is a member of. See the Illinois Policy Institute story, based on Chicago City Clerk data and Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests:https://www.illinoispolicy.org/chicago-aldermen-fail-to-attend-committee-meetings-nearly-half-the-time/

Chicago aldermen fail to attend committee meetings nearly half the time
Committee meetings are a critical step in the legislative process, yet aldermen skip them almost half the time. Chicago residents expect their aldermen to show up to work. An alderman has a variety of job responsibilities, but chief among them are considering and voting on city legislation.

It's Party Time in Rogers Park

This coming weekend it's the 16th annual Glenwood Ave. Arts Fest with more than 100 artists displaying their creations, 3 music stages, and lots of food tents, mostly from local restaurants. There's no admission fee and no one asks for a donation. Check it out here:

In need a room on the ground floor for about a month or 6 weeks?

I live in East Rogers Park. I may need to have surgery on my hip and will be on crutches and a hip brace for 6 weeks. Does anyone know of anything that may be available to rent where I can stay. Must be ground level and safe building. I'm scared because I currently live on a 3rd floor walk up and that won't work on crutches and in a brace. Thanks!

I wonder if an Airbnb might work for you... Many are located in elevator buildings - so no stairs, and often they have transportation nearby. Technically, I think they usually prefer (if not limit) guests to out-of-town visitors (possibly to discourage homeless/ transient people looking for a short-term place to live), but in your situation, I would think most hosts' wouldn't have a problem renting to you.

Chicago's Major Healthcare Systems: Is One Better Than the Others?

I'm trying to evaluate the differences between the major Chicago healthcare systems. There's Advocate, Northwestern, Rush, Loyola, and University of Chicago (and probably others I'm unaware of).

Northwestern has a reputation for being "world class," and they've clearly invested millions and millions of dollars in their facilities, which are lovely. But the doctors--from generalists to specialists--leave me wanting more. A lot more. I get three minutes with someone who stares at a laptop screen the whole time, hands me a prescription and a referral, and disappears; there's no follow-up, even for more major things like a brain MRI. ZERO follow-up. It's stunning to me how incredibly hands-off the Northwestern staff is.

Most likely every doctor is like this nowadays, as healthcare's two graph points, cost and quality, continue in opposite directions.

BUT...

Do you have an opinion about which system may be better? Do you use one other than Northwestern and have had good experiences? I know this is an impossibly broad question, but I thought I'd ask.

Our whole square block is VERY DARK because of at least four streetlights out, and I believe we have become a target for hoodlums who can see how dark it is. This is the 6600 north, square block bounded by Albion, Greenview, North Shore, and Newgard. I have asked repeatedly to have the streetlights fixed, but if anyone in this square block would like to help, please e-mail or call the 49th Ward, Alderman Moore's office. We have requested these lights be fixed at least THREE times. Why help these rotten thieves by not having adequate street lights? Please help. Thanks, neighbors.

@Tired of Liars - Okay, now I think you are focusing on the right issues. Railing against elected officials may be the right of every American, truth is, that sort of thing does very little to affect change.

I am in complete agreement with you that there needs to be more funding for mental health-related issues and the peripheral problems that you describe - aggressive panhandling, petty thefts, trespassing and the like are the kinds of problems that those with mental health problems become involved. Ambulatory and inpatient treatment programs are almost non-existent and these folks wind up in the criminal justice system when, instead, they should be getting their underlying mental health problems addressed. So, they wind up in the CCDOC taking up beds that criminal offenders should be occupying. Their offenses add to the court dockets and lengthen the wait times of more serious cases. The Cook County Sheriff then has to make decisions about how to allocate the resources of the DOC and stay out of trouble with the courts. See the complexity of the problem?

I also agree that kids without parental supervision, those who are in single parent homes or where both parents have abdicated their responsibility for parenting, are at high risk for future criminal activity. But a child who is faced with those problems is a victim of her/his environment and the odds are high that she/he will go on to victimize others. Again, do you see the complexity of the problem?

Service should be provided without having to wait days and days and then having resort to a blog to assemble neighborhood support. I was taught - attention to details - makes all the difference. That usually means - the right people in a job makes all the difference in results.

  • The workmen came out to replace the lights literally within hours of being notified by Emily. Thanks to local social media, she was able to get the correct information about how to seek help (by dialing 311). Seems to me that everything worked the way it should.

Post Office in 1600 Block of Devon

A few years ago the Postal Service took over the property (auto repair garage) at 1600 Devon for postal parking. Around the perimeter evergreen trees and some leaf bearing trees were planted and it looked very nice. The people at Canines and Felines did a lot of work to keep the Paulina side of the post office looking nice. Now the weeds and un-pruned trees hang over the sidewalk and hinder people walking along sidewalk.
Some of the weeds are three and four feet high.

Description of the guy is black male, slim, about 6ft tall wearing grey hoodie (that was pulled over face so couldn't get face or age description) and long pair of jeans. He opened a bottle of tonic water I had in the garage and drank from it. I told the police this when I filed the report thinking maybe they could get DNA and see who the guy is.....but they were not interested in this.

And come to think of it, had Bill in Rogers Park run into the crook in his garage and the crook had a gun, this could have had a different ending. Then I'm sure the Police would have been all over the bottle of tonic. At least he filed the police report, reported it etc which is more than I can say for the people who say "did anyone hear gun shots" and don't call 911.

This week in alley behind me I found envelope with car registration info, etc. I called the number found in the envelope and it was a cab driver who said his car had been broken into this week on the 1400 block of Arthur. Another neighbor in 1300 block of Albion said she saw 6ft, AfricanAmerican late teen early 20s wearing red and yellow hoodie checking out cars in middle of weekday afternoon. She lost sight of him and then saw him ransacking Neighbor's car. Police called but offender got away. And one additional note from my original post: Chicago Police detective did follow-up with me re my break-in. No suspect yet. So if you see guys checking out cars on the street and looking inside the vehicles, testing doors, etc. call 911 to get police presence.

In June, I posted about a lost dog and received many kind comments from EB readers. We eventually located the original owner who had adopted the dog from Chicago Animal Care and Control but who had been forced to give the dog away when moving to a rental home that would not allow dogs. The dog was subsequently lost and I could not track down its most recent owner. We fell in love with the dog and decided to keep it. According to the original owner, his name was Cody and he was about to turn two in August.

Two weeks ago, Cody became very lethargic and lost his appetite. We took him to the vet the next day when we realized that he was not just under the weather. He went to the vet on Tuesday, was admitted for tests and died of acute liver and kidney failure overnight on Friday. By Monday, lab results had all been returned with the confirmation that Cody died of leptospirosis.

I am posting this because leptospirosis is a bacteria that is passed in the urine of an infected dog (or rodent) into puddles and then the puddle water is drunk by another animal. The incubation period can vary from several days to several weeks. We will never know if Cody drank from an infected puddle while he was lost and on the street, or if he got it from a wading pool at a dog park. We just want to make sure that dog owners are careful to make sure your pet does not drink from puddles when outside.

Vets are seeing a spike in lepto cases in Chicago, possibly because of the rise in the rat population. It should be noted that, while it is exceptionally rare, lepto can be picked up by little kids who play in puddles with infected water and then put their hands into their mouths. Cody was a great dog and we miss him, but more importantly, we want to be sure that other people don't lose their pets as well.

  • The men were not arrested simply for protesting. That's an outright lie. They were arrested for illegally blocking traffic on the street, refusing to return to the sidewalk and one of the masked men started a physical altercation with a police officer. That wasn't very smart. No one was arrested for expressing a political opinion. Pointing out and correcting lies is not a personal attack any more than is pointing out comments posted in public about black folks, hoodies and thug looking people. Those comments weren't very smart either.

What a shame to destroy a nice building. If it ain't broke....don't fix it!

Found cat

Found a black on Northshore Ave today. It has no collar or any other identification. Brought it home for now. She is friendly and responds to calls. However, it seems she do not like indoors. I will wait for few more hours. If it belongs to 7anyone or if anyone want to keep, please respond. I have a kid at home so cant keep the cat for long at the moment.

  • Hello there. I think you may have found my kids cat. We live on the corner of NorthShore and Campbell , 6705. My phone number is 312-404-1674

  • I am sorry I don't have it now. I kept her for a while, feed her and then let her go. I will inform you If I find her again.

  • Here is a pic https://ibb.co/dGjhma
If it was yours, I hope you find it soon. When I let her free, she ran away chasing a rabbit kit. It was a really nice cat, but because of my 1.5 yr old kid I was not able to keep her at home for long. My kid was running after the cat making the cat uneasy. Plus, I was not sure whether the cat was properly vaccinated or not.

The Rogers Park Business Alliance (RPBA), the official chamber of commerce and business development organization for Rogers Park, is hosting a Forum on Transit Oriented Development (TOD), a type of urban development that maximizes the amount of residential, business and leisure space within walking distance of public transit.

The forum will be held on Wednesday, August 23rd, 7:00 p.m., at the Chicago Math and Science Academy, 7212 N. Clark (just north of Touhy).

Led by moderator RPBA board member, Jack Swenson, a former City of Chicago’s Department of Planning official, the forum will feature presentations from three expert panelists, including Kyle Smith, Senior Project Manager, Antero Group, a TOD consultant for the Center for Neighborhood Technology; Josh Ellis, Vice President, Metropolitan Planning Council; and Kyle Whitehead, Government Relations Director, Active Transportation Alliance.

A number of TODs have been proposed in Rogers Park in the last year and RPBA has embarked on Vision Clark Street, a long-term planning process for the future of Clark Street. This forum will help inform our discussion as we consider the TOD proposals and plan for the future of Clark Street.

TODs make a lot of sense. Many cities in Europe have neighborhoods that effectively are clusters of TODs but don't call them that. Many have neighborhoods with shopping and transportation in easy walking distance and shopping for food on a daily basis still is common practice. Most Chicago neighborhoods originally developed around a church parish and/or a synagogue congregation, a corner grocery store, a newspaper stand and, in some places, a pharmacy. Street car stops, before they were replaced by buses, were also within walking distance. Few people owned cars and most old Chicago neighborhoods were TODs. It was a good idea and still is.

Road Rage Man

A man drove up on my car by Pratt near S&C Electric and made threats. He was Hispanic possibly 25 to 30 years of age, drove a late model black 325 BMW with a plate Luxor Motors. A call was placed to 911, but as usual they are extremely slow to ensure safety. This was around 7 am. He got out of his car and began waving his arms, prior to driving in a reckless manor.

Happy Puppy!

Thanks to everyone who posted on my previous crate request! He seems to like his new crate and we cover it with the sheet at night. The sheet is pulled up so he can get in the doors. He has bedding in other areas that he uses sometimes but chooses the crate too.

Gino's North

Gino's North on Granville is no longer serving deep dish pizza. Not sure if this is EveryBlock worthy, but thought you should know. They said too many people complained about the time it took to make the pizzas. It is a shame, I loved their deep dish and drinking wine while waiting for it to cook was part of the charm! Sorry, I feel this is an important post as I always took my out of town guests here lol, and I felt it my civic duty to let the neighborhood know.

  • Kateri in Rogers Park artist at heart

Sorry to hear about the cut. I sure hope Giordanos @ 6836 N Sheridan Rd doesn't drop their deep dish pizza! I rely on it for deep dish pizza for all the same reasons that you folks relied on it from Gino's.

Perhaps if more than ONE person was scheduled to work FOH, this would expedite the dining process. Past 2 visits, the "lovely" bartender was in the weeds all evening barking at us for asking for a beverage because the rowdy stool dwellers could not stop inquiring her at their every beck and call. I have a bartender friend, and I recognize when they're overwhelmed and have empathy.
