Who Opposes Affordable Housing?

Additional affordable housing has been proposed for Rogers Park but the local Chamber of Commerce opposes it. The Chamber's secretary, an alternative priest who preaches in in an Elmhurst Masonic Lodge and has a postal address near Gary, Indiana, speaks against affordable Rogers Park housing and calls the Alderman a "concubine of big box interests." https://www.facebook.com/bishop.wilkowski Why is the local chamber being supported by outside religious interests and opposing affordable housing in Rogers Park? Shouldn't the chamber support commerce and not oppose it? Has the local chamber gone roque?

Sheryl your words and thoughts are kind and caring. Nobody ever wants to be homeless or destitute but sometimes it happens in life. Those people are our brothers and sisters. Some of them have addictions and some of them have mental or learning disabilities and can't care for themselves. We all need to help them and take care of them. Some people on these threads disagree and denigrate those people but I agree with you Sheryl. We must take care of one another and remember the phrase "There but for the grace of God go I." We don't have to like one another but we ought to respect the humanity and dignity in each other.

Jeffrey, I think that you speak from a position of experience and live in affordable housing yourself if that is correct. Some people probably resent that you are getting what they call a "free ride" but there are other people who are pleased that affordable housing allows others to remain in our communities and be part of the dynamic. You do art. Others do social activism. Some do ordinary jobs. We need everyone and everyone's voice. Keep talking JL. Your voice is important.

Is anyone thinking about moving out of Chicago?

Looking at moving to Colorado. Just interested if anyone else is planning on moving out of the city? Wanting beautiful scenery and more sunny days. :-)

  • MED

I am with you, Possiequette. When I said above that I'd never leave Chicago, I didn't necessarily mean the city proper, just the Chicagoland area. I live here in the city because this is where the opportunity and money is, but I spend a lot of my time at home pretending I am actually in Alaska or something (i.e. knitting, cooking, home brewing, reading by the fireplace, etc).

Waaaay back before there was EB or even Facebook Joe Lake was the major thorn in the side of a "developer-friendly" Ald. Matlak, the predecessor to Ald. Waguespack in Bucktown.

I've been accused of being a thorn in the side of a developer-friendly Alderman, in a weird and limited way I am like the younger Joe Lake before he became an over-posting creepy dude with a LOT of time on his hands serving up online condescension by the bucket-full.

I hope he is happier nowadays.

I will obviously take general safety precautions (i.e. not walking alone late at not if possible, being aware of my surroundings, etc. ) but as a 20 something year old woman living alone.. should I be worried about my safety? I'm sure there will be times when it's inevitable to walk home at a later time than ideal.

Would appreciate input from everyone, especially those who have lived/live in the 'corridor.' Thanks!

Need some tax advice

My husband passed away in late 2014 and he had a couple of credit cards and at that thime those companies told me at the time I was NOT responsible for repaying because I was not a co-signer. Now i have received 1099's showing those written-off balances as income. Because we were married, do I have to claim those write-offs as income? Really need a tax professional or lawyer to weigh in on this. Thanks!

What the lawyer is saying is - wait and see if they use resources to sue. The surviving spouse is not given a free ride because her husband dies. They shared life, including debts. What bothers me the most is the wife's determination to stiff the suppliers. There is a moral compass problem here. Those debts should have been paid until the marriage cash and assets were exhausted - i can't believe he died and there was nothing in the joint bank account - no home, no retirement account, no real estate. the wife evidently has income - that should be used to pay the suppliers who provided credit in the good faith belief they would be repaid. :-( - this is an effort to "escape" joint marriage responsibility - "for better or worse" went down the tubes. Marriage bills are both their bills. Be fair and pay those vendors. Imagine if everyone did this! it would give new meaning to "hidden" assets. My sympathy to those vendors.

  • YakovBok In the RP since 1996

The vendors are not getting "stiffed"in the sense that I think that you may be implying. By issuing a 1099c, the vendor "writes off" the debt, that is, it gets to reduce its tax liability. The issuing of a 1099c is a tax reduction strategy. Regarding the "joint debt" -...

The issuing of a 1099c is a tax reduction strategy. Regarding the "joint debt" - it is not. It is only joint debt if it is both parties' names. It may be "marital debt," that is, part of the marital estate, but it is not "joint debt" in that they both owe it to the vendor. The contract is between the vendor and the deceased, not the vendor and husband and wife. You will never successfully argue "third party beneficiary" in a credit card case. The deceased not paying back the debt is the inherent risk of issuing easy credit, i.e., credit card bills, and why the interest rates are so high.

Eric Vaughn Still Awaiting Trial 3 Years After Wil Lewis Murder

Appearantly crossing the "T's" and dotting the "I's" is a lengthy process. Gang affiliated, violent habitual criminal Eric Vaughn still has not gone to trial for the Murder of Wil Lewis for which he was responsible. Let's hope that our criminal justice system is merely p being prudent in its prosecution rather than dropping the ball in procrastination and that this filth will never breath air as a free man again in his lifetime.

@JohnL - Not so much the arrest for petty crimes that is the issue. I think most of us can agree that if you violate the law you should be held accountable. How petty crimes negatively impact the system has to do with money. If you violate a crime and have the ability to post a bond, you are fortunate. If you have sufficient resources then you may have the ability to retain a private attorney who can work immediately to expedite you through the system. If not, you languish in the Cook County Correctional System and add to the numbers of people who must be housed, clothed, fed, watched over and transported to and from court rooms. The nature of your crime certainly does not get you fast-tracked through the system and, as pointed out earlier, your case adds to the backlogged dockets.

Hi,

I moved to Edgewater last fall. I loved my new apartment for three months, until someone moved in to the unit right underneath me and began blasting loud music for hours at a time, every day.

I introduced myself and asked him to turn it down. He ignored me--and when I say he ignored me, I mean when I was standing right in front of him. He started at me with a "[bleep] you" expression on his face without saying a word. When I realized he wasn't going to respond, I walked away.

A few weeks passed, during which time the music became louder and louder. At the loudest point, I couldn't hear my TV. This past Tuesday after work, I went down and asked him again to turn the music down. This time, he loudly told me that he would NOT turn it down, and he would NOT stop playing it. He said he "has to" play loud music to "drown out the noise my neighbors make." He's pissed that the dogs that belong to the people under him bark, and that he can hear their TV, etc.

He's also pissed at ME, he said, because the floor squeaks when I walk across it. I said that crossing the room and blasting loud music were not equivalent. He said "I disagree!" and slammed the door. I immediately called my landlord, who said he'd call the man. Based on the fact that the music goes on, I doubt that happened. (I had also contacted my landlord when this guy moved in to complain about the music. Landlord said at that time, also, he'd call the man; nothing changed.)

I have already decided that I will be leaving when my lease is up, but that's not for 14 months. My questions are, am I being unreasonable? I'm in my 50s and I've never encountered this kind of noise. What obligations does my landlord have to help me? What recourse do I have? Are there any city statutes that can help me?

Thanks so much for reading this.

The young man convinced my good-intentioned and trusting landlord that the problem was solved (but all that the tenant did was unplug stuff as a cover-up).

Two days later, after they had laid low," misery again, so I put together an 8-pager on dealing with issues of causes of such feedback and knocked on their door;. I did not mince words as to their lack of consideration and the fixes potentially needed to: bad WiFi, bad Skype connections or not using headphones; bad cabling connection; old electrical cords; cords not up to the current electrical load, huge TV (really too big for the space) angled so that it was touching the wall (which with spaces between apts. in older buildings allows conduction of sound), etc.

I told them to "fix it" or they would hear from my attorney and so would my landlord. Problem solved in a day.

I am re-posting because I didn't see the following notice in today's Every Block edition. Advice welcome.

First come basis after notifying me. I live in Rogers Park on Sheridan Road. If you can take downstairs an over-the-bed medical table and/or a 4-drawer letter sized file cabinet (with key) from my 2nd floor residence, they're yours!

Both items are in pristine condition. I purchased the medical table some years ago from a used furniture place and used it for craft making purposes. The file cabinet is taupe in color, purchased from Office Depot for household rather than industrial use.

*** To my surprise, I was informed by the Salvation Army pickup service: 1) NO medical items, 2) NO office furniture, including (but not limited to) chairs and desks, 3) NO medical furniture, including (but not limited to) chairs and stools, 4) NO bookcases that should be affixed to a wall 5) NO books other than novels, 6) NOT PERMITTED to pickup items in an unfinished basement area, e.g., boiler, overhead exposed pipes.

Thanks in advance.

  • Kateri in Rogers Park artist at heart

Gunshots in Rogers Park.

Anyone else hear gunshots around 1:35am this morning near Jonquil or Juneway? There were 4-5 shots in a row.

  • I heard that too, around 2:05am. I lived on Sheridan but my room is facing east lake terr and Rogers. I thought the shots came from East lake Terr. Anyone knows where that happened?

  • Yeah, same alley as above. Maybe this is weird, but it almost sounded like someone was bored and decided to unload a clip, because there were two slow shots, a pause, and then six more shots in succession. I didn't hear any voices or anything afterward.

  • Ary, click on Kateri's name in their post, and then choose "send email" from the bottom of the list on the right side.

  • Kateri in Rogers Park artist at heart

I am awaiting a reply from Ary to set up a mutually agreed upon time for viewing and/or pickup. I included my phone number in my email to him.

Anyone else interested? Please feel free to email me.

For some reason, I can't find who it was that suggested I contact the BROWN ELEPHANT. I will contact the Brown Elephant if this ad remains in limbo. The filing cabinet and bed table really are in pristine condition.

Vintage hallway entrance tile repair needed

I bought a building with a vintage tile hallway that is missing an area of tiles near the fron door of approx 1 foot x 2 feet wide. I need an expert tile repair person to make this repair. Please recommend someone. I need someone that can not make the repair but suggest replacement tile for this small area to match the existing tile which is in nearly perfect condition.

  • Helen NoH North of Howard for 55 + years

Did your tile person actually manage to find replacement tile that matches the original, Andrew?

  • Andrew Levin Property Management Specialist

The handyman is looking around at different tile stores in Chicago and will buy samples that he thinks will match best but I know he will not find the exact match.
