Large Dog Crate Wanted!

If anyone has a large dog crate that they do not use or any other dog related items that they do not need. I am adopting a 2 year old dog tomorrow and need a few things.

  • Andrew Carpenter Realtor Edgewater home owner and Chicago Reator

He may be lab and bluetick coonhound. There is definitely some sort of hound going on because of his ears. He has mixed white and black hair on his chest as well as a little on his muzzle and a tiny bit on his feet. He should be fully grown but he is super skinny. We will feed him to a healthy weight, maybe another 10 lbs.

  • Have fun with him! He has a happy home now!!

Currently, an annoymous funder is matching all donations to my project, which is to get breakout boxes for my students to use to build their collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. If you haven't heard of breakout boxes, check out breakoutedu.com. The challenges on this website are a great learning tool and are super fun. I'd love to get these materials for my students. I think it would help so much with them developing grit. Any help you could provide, from a single dollar to just sharing this information with others, would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Happy Eclipse Day

Happy Eclipse Day to everyone. To the eclipsers, to those feeling eclipsed, to the eclipse-friendly, to the eclipse-intolerant...a good day.

Remember not to look straight at it, even with your retro Blues Brothers dark sunglasses no no no. Borrow some welders goggles.

This was how they did it old school in the 60's...courtesy of TIME magazine:

How to Watch the Solar Eclipse Like a 1960s School Kid
To build your own, get a carton and cut a hole in one side, big enough to poke your head through. Paste white paper on the inside surface that you will be facing. Then punch a pinhole into the opposite side, high enough so that the little shaft of light will miss your head.

Post Office in 1600 Block of Devon

A few years ago the Postal Service took over the property (auto repair garage) at 1600 Devon for postal parking. Around the perimeter evergreen trees and some leaf bearing trees were planted and it looked very nice. The people at Canines and Felines did a lot of work to keep the Paulina side of the post office looking nice. Now the weeds and un-pruned trees hang over the sidewalk and hinder people walking along sidewalk.
Some of the weeds are three and four feet high.

If this is the worst we can find for that post office we should be grateful that they have fixed their horrid management and chronic mis-delivery issues. It's not the worst zip code I've experienced in Chicago hit for a good two years ranked among the top two... It seems to be pretty great these days. Also the emailed scans of my incoming mail is a great enhancement.

Anyone know of a good bar in our neighborhood that will show the McGregor-Mayweather fight?

Most information I've seen online is very generic, or points to bars in Lakeview. I am hoping perhaps OShaughnessys or Wild Goose might be good spots. I can message them but also looking for some unbiased views from my neighbors. Thank you!

  • Thank you Aville Mary! That's exactly the kind of info I was looking for. Thanks to everyone else, too.

  • Rocks Northcenter is now showing the fight. No cover! "Get there early"

Cat in desperate need of rescue!

Does anyone have room in their home for this beautiful, 12 year old cat? She has been stuck in a cage at the Petco at 3122 N. Ashland Avenue for at least 2-3 months now, and she has become extremely depressed. She is not good with dogs, otherwise I would take her. I think she's ok with other cats though. I frequent this pet store, and my heart breaks every time I see her! The shelter that put her there is supposed to rotate the cats every so often, but they have not done so. Someone please help her!

  • WOW! Snarky replies to my comments? You reap what you sow.

  • Sandy in EdgeGlen EdgeGlen since 1987

I haven’t adopted a kitty in a while and so was unaware that PPAH’s relationship with Petraits is not what it was a decade ago. I stand corrected.

Skunk Smell

If you have been smelling skunk more lately, especially in your apartment building, it is marijuana. Not cigarettes, not the pot we smoked 40 years ago. This skunk marijuana is on the rise right now and gives a very potent high. I don't care what anyone does, just don't involve me, especially by having to smell that stink. Look it up on the Internet, plenty of articles.

  • catlady for the love of cats, lets get along!

your right @oldfashioned, i was walking to the train after work and this guy who was walking in front of me was smoking it from a one hiter i can assume. I see people smoke it everywhere, some look like electric pens and have zero smell. Maybe your neighbors should invest in those.

I just renewed my lease, because I was looking for an apartment in the same budget and couldn't find one that worked for me. However, if you only have the one dog, you might have better luck, because some places that allow dogs have a two pet limit. The two bedrooms for $1,100 were generally located right by the Howard el stop, right by the Wilson el stop, or a garden unit. I only looked for places that were near the CTA. Padmapper had the majority of the listings. Good luck!

  • PLSS Bowmanville

Unless you need to be near the red line, go a little further west and look in Bowmanville (west of Andersonville at Foster and Damen) and along Winnemac Park. It's quiet, safe, and has a lot of apartments. We just moved from the area but really liked it while we were there.

Explosion in Uptown last night!

Around 1AM last night I was woken up but what sounded like an explosion. It wasn't a shooting or anything like that, it was just real loud. I haven't heard anything today about it. So if anyone knows what happened please fill us in on the details. Disturbing!

  • I heard the same thing just 15 minutes ago near Wilson and Wolcott! Two really loud and quick explosions about 5 minutes apart! No idea, but it made me jump both times.

  • I also heard something around 12:15 last night/this a.m. coming from the Winnemac Park-ish area. It made me wonder if they were fireworks.

  • Mare Wilson Avenue Watchdog!

I've heard a few reports that it may have been a transformer, which sounds plausible. They overload when people use too much electricity and then there's a BIG explosion. I wouldn't worry too much, at least we weren't attacked by N. Korea!

Lincoln Medical Center

I'm looking for a PCP.

Does anyone go to (or Has anyone gone to) Lincoln Medical Center on Lincoln Ave and Winona? How was it (doc and staff)?

  • robin in WRP I support a 28th Amendment 4Free & Fair Elections!
  • Dr Seferovic is great and the staff was always polite and helpful, but I stopped going because of a) wait times, and b) it wasn't super convenient for me. I first went because I was able to get a last-minute appointment on a saturday when I had a neck spasm, but as time went on I noticed I spent more and more time sitting in the waiting room - even if I got one of the first appointments of the day. YMMV. I'll reiterate that the doc was awesome.

Gino's North

Gino's North on Granville is no longer serving deep dish pizza. Not sure if this is EveryBlock worthy, but thought you should know. They said too many people complained about the time it took to make the pizzas. It is a shame, I loved their deep dish and drinking wine while waiting for it to cook was part of the charm! Sorry, I feel this is an important post as I always took my out of town guests here lol, and I felt it my civic duty to let the neighborhood know.

  • Kateri in Rogers Park artist at heart

Sorry to hear about the cut. I sure hope Giordanos @ 6836 N Sheridan Rd doesn't drop their deep dish pizza! I rely on it for deep dish pizza for all the same reasons that you folks relied on it from Gino's.

  • J

Perhaps if more than ONE person was scheduled to work FOH, this would expedite the dining process. Past 2 visits, the "lovely" bartender was in the weeds all evening barking at us for asking for a beverage because the rowdy stool dwellers could not stop inquiring her at their every beck and call. I have a bartender friend, and I recognize when they're overwhelmed and have empathy.

Where can I spray paint stuff?

I have several pots and planters I want to spray paint but my "home" doesn't have an "outside area" (balcony, porch, front yard, back yard).

Where do people, living in multiunit buildings, go to spray paint stuff? Can I spread my newspapers on the sidewalk (early in the morning so one's around) or a public park and spray paint there? How does Chicago's spray paint ban play into this?
