Some of the bad policies and practices of the school board are so extensive and profoundly counterproductive. That’s just the reality of Chicago Public Schools. Remember B-3 and her $21,000,000 contract that she was going to get 10% of? All of it just to give the principals some worthless certification that a private corporation invented to make money off our kids. Gov Rauner was on their board. It’s truly sickening and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The appointed school board is not about educating our kids, they are not educators or a part of the teachers union. They may claim scores are up.
My Dad taught in a small town for 32 years. No matter where he goes, his former students say hi, and thank him for things he did for them that helped keep them on track and enable them to live a productive life, contribute to a vibrant community. I can’t count all of the great stories I have heard. When a child gets an education we all benefit.
The teachers are the only thing holding the schools together. So many things are stacked against them. They’re not doing this to get rich, and it certainly isn’t easy. Most truly want to help and have a meaningful purpose. So when a teacher asks for a dry erase board or a laptop computer, they have on average already spent $1000 of their own money this year. A dry erase board can keep the kids engaged, and prevent situations that hinder the learning process.
Teachers are awesome, and so are dry erase boards. (And bake sales are not allowed!!!)

There are always kids that don’t really have homes, maybe it’s a shelter, maybe a grandparent, uncle, or just bouncing around. Nothing the poor kids have any control over. They don’t get a good night’s sleep in a bed, proper nourishment, love, not even a good role model anywhere in their lives. Often when a child is homeless, they are wearing dirty clothes and they may not smell good. Nobody wants to sit next to them and leads to bullying and fights, or a child withdrawing. Many teachers take the kids clothes home and wash them, or buy them clothes. Keep in mind that kids don’t have a choice about any of this, they don’t get to choose what their parents do, or who or what they are, what type of decisions they make. They don’t know anything other than what they have been exposed to. It’s shut the #@%* up and a slap upside the head.
Ok, let’s start teaching. Well, maybe your supplies haven’t come in yet. Maybe the principal lost your order because you spoke up about something, or the budget hasn’t gone through because your position is really classified as something else because of budget cuts. Texts books are not as prevalent as they used to be. 4o% of the schools has no library, so the teacher is responsible for putting their own library together, all on their own. Much of what teachers are made to teach is targeted to the mandatory standardized tests, yes that’s plural.. And of course lots of test practice. Crazy testing. The computer is broken or way outdated, so it’s just not working. The principal is always juggling things to make up for the deficits, it may be ethical and legal, could be creative, or totally illegal

Anyone have GOOD & LOCAL recommendations for a Cement/Concrete Work Contractor?

Please, only if you had work done and were satisfied;
I would appreciate the recommendation to pass along
as per a relative's request...bonus if they give
Senior Discount for their work.

  • Frank Baggio construction.
    Been around since 1922
Their work is outstanding. We have porch, sidewalk, patio from them. Referred them many times.
No I'm not related...just great concrete.

  • Thank you for this referral. My sister saw his ad in the paper, so I checked online
for more info; there wasn't much and even though a website was listed I tried a
half dozen times to access it and nothing. So, I didn't feel so confident about him.
but now that I got a very good reference, I will reconsider and put his name "back at the top of the list."

  • Ms. R's Middle School Literature Project

Ms. Reisch is asking for $1911.86:
My students need novel sets. We don't have class sets of novels to go along with our units. Novel studies that interest my students will enrich classroom discussions and grow strong readers.

Heavy Metal Concert Touted as Huge Success at Toyota Park???!

of the "first ever Chicago Open Air" concert, in Bridgeview, Toyota Park.
They go on effusively how it was "declared a big success", "more
than 75,000 fans", "a monumental weekend of rock"...
No... chiefly Heavy Metal!
Some of the lauded bands: 'Rotting in Vain', 'Five Finger Death Punch', 'Monster Energy', and let's not forget,'Butcher Babies'
They then go on to mention that 'fans also showed their charitable side' by supporting something called, 'Dyin 2 Live/Fxck Cancer'.

Seems to me the very fabric of this type of show is in complete opposition
to the SW-side communities' and neighborhoods' collective ethos of
'main-street, mainstream living', wherein a family can feel safe, can raise a child sanely,
and where one can hope to experience uplifting messages and ways of living.

Bringing the Heavy metal music crowd and its crxp seems the complete antithesis of this very way of 'middle-class' lifestyle.

So, what's up with the owners of Toyota Park? The last I heard, they were the usual
political fat cats of the area. And, I have to conclude that their noses follow the scent
of money, money, money ONLY, in arranging this junk punk concert to be brought into
our area.

Don't know what is more deeply disturbing, the pictures of black leather, demonic
band names and the devil's horns abounding or...the motive of bring heavy metal to
middle class American neighborhoods.... Geesh!

But, if I am not mistaken, this paper is also owned by these politicos
(don't think people miss this shifting toward expressing the views of a certain category
of political/business interests-- even at the expense of its readership and community
residents).... Too bad.

  • if someone can make a buck off of something, it will be done, no matter the cost. in this case, at least some of the money goes for a good cause. ive heard that rahm and his brother own a piece of lollapalooza, and that its money in the bank for them. i'm not really that informed, so i could be wrong.

  • @concerned23 agree 100% Great videos. People who oppose this will never watch them though. They have to focus all of their energy by "fighting the cause!" People are having fun so the ignorant will always find a way to complain. Toxic

  • Yes...it's important to not vote only for the media-spun "politically popular", but solemnly, with one's mind, heart and conscience. IF we still have a democracy and not an oligarchy (as Senator Bernie Sanders mentioned in his speech), then this ought to work if everyone got out and voted and voted in this manner.

Music Instrument Donations

Hello, community members,

As you likely hear in the news, CPS budgets are tight, and arts programs are oftentimes the first things cut. Im fighting hard with my teachers at Curie High School to prevent this from happening.

We're trying to build the music program at our school and provide for students that struggle to afford basic necessities let alone luxuries such as musical instruments. I'd love to know: do you or anyone you know have an old musical instrument you'd be willing to donate? In return, I'd gladly have my school write a letter on our school's letterhead, so that you may file it in your tax returns as a 'thanks' for your generous gift. I've actually chosen this option myself in the past, and have had the tax benefit end up being worth more than I'd get if I sold it! What a great added bonus!

Think of what this will do: our students want the opportunity to make music, and you can be the person to provide that. My CPS e-mail is cgraves3@cps.edu, in case you want to contact me directly.

Please share this request with friends and family as well, as we think of how we can each make an impact.

Thanks! Our wonderful students deserve the best!!

Four years ago, I posted a request for band instrument donations for Edwards Elementary in Archer Heights. Due to the wonderful kindness of many of you, they now have a thriving band program.

Now, I'm an Assistant Principal at Curie High School across the street, and am requesting your help again.
