    I want to give a shout-out WELCOME, to Lillian, the Yoga teacher I met yesterday, when I stopped in to say hello and find out more about this new local business
    which opened its doors a few weeks back. I wasn't able to make the Open House
    then, but plan on visiting again....

    The studio room where the yoga classes are held is a peaceful and inviting space.
    Lillian is a certified Yoga instructor and a welcoming person.

    If you've never tried yoga, try it-- it's a great stress- buster and relaxing time-out...and being that you are invited to a free first class, why not???

    Here are a few tips to encourage you:

    1) Yoga is NOT a religion (it's a health and well-being practice for all human beings to
    explore)

    2) You're never 'too old or too young' to benefit;

    3) You need not be any expert or flexible of body (yoga is flexible enough a technique to adjust to your level of knowledge and ability).

    4) Here are just a few proven benefits of yoga: Improves lung capacity & breathing; supports the heart, lessens stress, promotes strength, flexibility, improved posture;
    lowers cholesterol levels and blood pressure, heightens immunity; aligns spine, relieves back pain (e.g.sciatica); decreases inflammatory joint pain; increases metabolism, reduces anxiety, lifts mood, stimulates beneficial brain transmitters,
    and likely, there are more many benefits of yoga I haven't mentioned (many of these I have experienced myself through engaging in it).

    With all this sound improvement in your health and well-being, how can you
    not try yoga for yourself?

    Plus, here's a new local 23rd-ward business, folks. As is said, "Let's put our money where are mouth is" and help support it by taking some classes....!

    Speaking of the classes, they are being offered M-Su at this time, so...no more excuses! And... it's also enjoyable...so, have fun experimenting! ;~}

Block parties/block clubs?

Does anyone else here live in the 4600 block of Karlov? Interested in forming a block club or having a block party?

  • Archer Heights Guy Long time resident.

    If you are not a member of the Archer Heights Civic Association, you should consider joining as they can tell you who are members in the 4600 Kedvale block and that is a good starting point to create a block party. The AHCA monthly meeting is tomorrow at the UNO School - 7:30 PM - 47 th & Kildare.

47TH STREET

Why does 47th st from pulaski to central look so dirty and abandoned? what can be done about this. The area looks horrible.

  • I report everything myself, how else will things get noticed?! people need to report stuff.
    I agree with you Jenn Adams, I dont know of any Chamber of Commerce nearby. If you do find one please let me know also

  • Joann Williams Hearst Community Organization, President

    Try the Archer Heights Civic Association and the Vittum Park Civic Association. We have problems with the Midway Shuttle Van Service on 47th St. & Lacrosse keeping their area clean of debris.

    DOG-FLU OUTBREAK UPDATE...

    Excerpt from longer recent news article (see link below):

    "The new virus is different from the previous strain of dog flu, H3N8, that's been circulating in the United States since 2004. The new strain, known as H3N2, has been found in animals in China and Korea, and an infected animal probably brought it to Chicago, Poulsen said.

    There is a vaccine for the previous U.S. dog flu strain, but it's generally given only to dogs at high risk of getting infected, and experts don't know if the vaccine protects against the new strain. A few pharmaceutical companies have started working on a new vaccine, but it will probably be four to six months before it becomes available, Poulsen said."

"OOPA SHOOPA"....:~} LET'S POLKA! PEOPLE...!

While watching a library DVD of some shows from the old Ch.11 series, 'Wild Chicago', I was surprised to learn that there is/was/is a museum dedicated to Polka on the Southwest Side (originally housed in its own building at 4145 S. Kedzie), it is now to be found upstairs at Polonia Banquet's/& dance hall (which still books the occasional 'polka party', as well as Mexican weddings), located at 4604 S. Archer Ave.

The article (link below), mentions a dedicated 'curator', Dave Ulczycki, and that visits are by appointment: (312) 315-2215 or visit www.internationalpolka.com.

Here's the entire Tribune article (2009) about it:

    Q: WHY DO POLKA AND MARIACHI MUSIC SOUND ALIKE?*

    from online site Answers.com--

    "Because Mariachi music IS essentially a re-creation of polka music. "Mariachi" is a bastardization of the French word "Mariage," after the French attempt to take over Mexico in the mid-19th century. The original mariachi bands played at weddings, and the name stuck.
    Mariachi is a Northern Mexican folk music, which is directly derived from German polka bands, which Mexicans heard in the 19th century. The rollicking rhythms and instruments (accordians, guitars, horns, fiddles, hand-held drums) are all based in polka tradition, as are the tight-fitting short jackets and pants decorated up the sides with buttons; a variation of German gentlemen's clothing. The oversized cowboy hats however, are a purely Mexican touch."

    * Fitting then, that the Polonia Banquets (& dance hall) on Archer Avenue in Brighton Park, now hosts both Polka parties and Mexican Weddings....

    the last month or more, since, you're absolutely right...except for the 'Moran; sign being removed, nothing seems to have changed at that corner of Archer and Kostner,
    with this auto business:
    1) still a load of cars parked in their lot; and more in the bays
    2) still a load of guys hanging out their (one recent weekend, a very large group
    were just 'hanging' in their lot-- most not seemingly engage in work, but just standing
    around

    Given the Mr. Kostner ("Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!!") started this topic, perhaps he and/or SWOldTimr could/would explain (enlighten us) WHY apparently nothing much
    has changed... Or does anyone ELSE know what the deal is (it doesn't make much sense to me to just close down one supposedly 'problematic' enterprise, to have another take over that is conducting 'business as usual).

CHIMILEX Grill-Coffee-Juice

Greetings Everyone,

I will like to extend a special invitation to everyone in the neighborhood to come out and join us as we celebrate the recent opening of Chimilex Restaurant at 4636 s. Cicero. After so much hard work, we finally have the pleasure and honor to serve our first TACOS, BURRITOS, JUICES, COFFEES, SMOOTHIES & much more.

Sincerely,
Sami

  • I dont think the neighborhood needs ANOTHER taco joint there is plenty. What this area needs is a burger joint or pub or anything similiar to the north side, where there is an outdoor eating area, a bar, and dog friendly.

  • I couldnt agree more with you with opening the places you mentioned. There is plenty of store fronts and space for that. As long as people are willing to open new businesses we should support.
