Old Warsaw Deli on Archer and Lockwood?

The Old Warsaw Deli on Archer and Lockwood had been empty for years now since it burned down but recently it has gotten new windows and is being cleaned. Does anyone know what, if anything, is going on? Are they going to finally open something? I really hope so, I'm tired of that old abandoned useless building!

  • I hope so.....Kind of gave up on the place.....I hope it stays a polish deli.

  • It's going to be a useless Liquor Store; this is something the neighborhood doesn't need and will last maybe a year if that. Then we will be stuck with the ugly channel letters that spell liquor on the side of the building for a long time.

Police Activity

Does anyone know why there were cops and a helicopter in the area of 52nd & Kolmar Sunday (9/4/16) between 10:30pm and 11:00pm? There was nothing on the news or social media.

  • I noticed five or six cop cars heading west down 55th Street going lights and sirens around that time, too. I wondered what was happening.

Lost Cat

Cat lost from 56th s Merrimac. Was last seen by TCF parking lot on 55th st. Please if there are any sightings of him let us know. 773-719-5553

  • Just an idea. I lost my cat and was looking for him into the early evening. They usually stay near their home. I walked out in the backyard about 2:00a and he was out there. Wait until it gets quiet outside and then check around your house. They are afraid of noises during the day, and lay low.

  • Thank you for the advice!! ☺

  • Best of luck!

Rats, raccoons, and ... parakeets?!

We've had multiple sightings of rats in the last couple of weeks at 58th Street, on both sides of Neenah and between Neenah and Natchez. We've had multiple sightings of rats in the last couple of weeks at 58th Street, on both sides of Neenah and between Neenah and Natchez. One was dead in a yard, two others were seen scampering through a yard, along the sidewalk, and up the alley between the two streets. And at about 10:30 the other night, two raccoons climbed down from trees near the same alley, one on the north side and the other on the south side of 58th Street. They both took off north through the alley.

I called Ald. Quinn's office and was told they would rat-bait the alleys in the 5700 and 5800 blocks of Natchez/Neenah, so keep an eye out as if you take your dog through there. Also, let's all keep the trash cans closed and poop picked up.

As to the raccoons, they offered one of those humane traps to be placed in my backyard; when a raccoon is captured, I should call the office and they'd come pick it up. I asked what happens if a raccoon gets caught on a weekend; pickup would have to wait until Monday (ew). I put it on hold for now, hoping that the two that I saw were just passing through (they haven't given me any trouble yet). I might ask for the trap sometime and just move it out of the way on Friday night if there hasn't been a catch before then, so I don't have to babysit a raccoon in my yard over the weekend.

Finally, spotted a pair of what looked like parakeets high in the tree in front of my folks house in the 6200 block of Mason today. Couldn't get a good look, but the silhouette and noises both seemed quite like parakeets. Does anyone know if these are typical in the neighborhood, passing through, or escaped pets?

Leslie OMG I would have had to move out till he did. AC came right out when we contacted them we had a big fat one manage to crawl between the screen door and wood door, he just sat there hissing, we even tried to get it to play possum by scaring it but no luck. AC told us they are so use to city living most don't play possum but will attack a small dog or even a cat like you said. My neighbors big dogs killed two in one night. The good news is they are nomad, so they are moving along, bad news is they carry up to 15 babies at a time on them, so when they come of age they leave them behind and it starts all over.. I'm just hoping it's not my yard they come of age, I'll have to move and give the house to them. Possums to me are like snakes to others, the struggle is real, lol.

  • I don't have the option to move. He was in the livingroom at first and my roommate sat in a chair in the hallway to guard the possum wouldn't go further into the house. He had to get sleep eventually and while he was sleeping the possum walked past him...

There’s a person, used to be called the network supervisor. They make these inspections, looking for really stupid things, like how your bulletin board is decorated, you can be fired if it’s not just right, and you’d think this is a Monty Python skit. Some of the bad policies and practices of the school board are so extensive and profoundly counterproductive. That’s just the reality of Chicago Public Schools. Remember B-3 and her $21,000,000 contract that she was going to get 10% of? All of it just to give the principals some worthless certification that a private corporation invented to make money off our kids. Gov Rauner was on their board. It’s truly sickening and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The appointed school board is not about educating our kids, they are not educators or a part of the teachers union. They may claim scores are up, but the numbers are gamed.
My Dad taught in a small town for 32 years. No matter where he goes, his former students say hi, and thank him for things he did for them that helped keep them on track and enable them to live a productive life, contribute to a vibrant community. I can’t count all of the great stories I have heard. When a child gets an education we all benefit.
The teachers are the only thing holding the schools together. So many things are stacked against them. They’re not doing this to get rich, and it certainly isn’t easy. Most truly want to help and have a meaningful purpose. So when a teacher asks for a dry erase board or a laptop computer, they have on average already spent $1000 of their own money this year. A dry erase board can keep the kids engaged, and prevent situations that hinder the learning process.
Teachers are awesome, and so are dry erase boards. (And bake sales are not allowed!!!)

Your posts made my day. You hit the nail on the head on every point. It is so depressing to encounter incompetence at every level, every day. You are a bright spot! It is people like you, who are a positive contribution to our communities, that give me hope.

I have a friend who is a teacher and the horror stories she shared with me about how her principal runs the school and what happens to you if you speak up or disagree, it is absolutely disgusting.

    Where is the oversight?

Having worked in a union environment years ago (different industry), I saw how it protected the lazy, incompetents. They knew how to work the system. The work still had to get done so it was the rest of us who took on additional work while the lazy pieces of SH#*(& got away with it. I never had to use the union.I didn't even know who the union steward (title?) was. Just showed up, on time, did my job as best as I could, got along with everyone, helped out wherever needed, etc. Because of this experience, I am strongly anti-union.

Now I see teachers who are asking for tons of money for Apple TVs, iPads, chrome books, and specialty tables they will ideally only use for one year. On top of all that they are asking for this money in a neighborhood who's population consist of people who are just scraping by financially.

I notice that when teachers ask for just about anything, there are a few people on every block that are quick to make some hostile and uninformed comments. You obviously have no idea what the status of education is today. I hope you read this post. My wife was a teacher, and many family members going back generations were, too. The older generation can’t believe what the younger generation is up against. If you were a teacher in CPS, this could be what your day look like.
As a teacher, your class may consist of 30 or 35 kids, anything over 26 is tough, and opens things up for big problems, leading to fights. If you call security, chances are nobody is going to come because there is only one security guard, and they already busy. Some kids, by law, are supposed to have aides, some even fulltime, but this is rarely the reality because the position hasn’t been approved just yet, or some other red tape has stopped it. Sometimes the classes get doubled up, maybe a teacher is sick and the principal is saving money by not hiring a sub or none are available. The school copy machine is usually broken, and when it’s functioning there is a 3 day wait and there is limit on how many copies you can get. So it may or may not happen. If you really want them, you copy them at home on your own time with your own materials.
Sometimes when it’s raining out or freezing, all the kids come in soaked and frozen because there is only one metal detector and everybody has to go through it, so it’s a late start, it cuts into breakfast time and the kids are eating in the classroom, can you imagine cleaning up after 30 first graders. The school doesn’t provide cleaning supplies, or Kleenex, or pencil sharpeners... the list goes on.

There are always kids that don’t really have homes, maybe it’s a shelter, maybe a grandparent, uncle, or just bouncing around. Nothing the poor kids have any control over. They don’t get a good night’s sleep in a bed, proper nourishment, love, not even a good role model anywhere in their lives. Often when a child is homeless, they are wearing dirty clothes and they may not smell good. Nobody wants to sit next to them and leads to bullying and fights, or a child withdrawing. Many teachers take the kids clothes home and wash them, or buy them clothes. Keep in mind that kids don’t have a choice about any of this, they don’t get to choose what their parents do, or who or what they are, what type of decisions they make. They don’t know anything other than what they have been exposed to. It’s shut the #@%* up and a slap upside the head.
Ok, let’s start teaching. Well, maybe your supplies haven’t come in yet. Maybe the principal lost your order because you spoke up about something, or the budget hasn’t gone through because your position is really classified as something else because of budget cuts. Texts books are not as prevalent as they used to be. 4o% of the schools has no library, so the teacher is responsible for putting their own library together, all on their own. Much of what teachers are made to teach is targeted to the mandatory standardized tests, yes that’s plural.. And of course lots of test practice. Crazy testing. The computer is broken or way outdated, so it’s just not working. The principal is always juggling things to make up for the deficits, it may be ethical and legal, could be creative, or totally illegal

  • So why aren't teachers speaking out about this? Yes, you're posting here but where is the outrage? Where is the outrage by teachers and parents? What is your union doing for you?? All the public ever hears is Karen Lewis' big mouth complaining about the contract. Ever thing about decertifying your union and using all these union dues for school supplies? Gee, how much money would that be?

Anyone have GOOD & LOCAL recommendations for a Cement/Concrete Work Contractor?

Please, only if you had work done and were satisfied;
I would appreciate the recommendation to pass along
as per a relative's request...bonus if they give
Senior Discount for their work.

  • Frank Baggio construction.
    Been around since 1922
Their work is outstanding. We have porch, sidewalk, patio from them. Referred them many times.
No I'm not related...just great concrete.

  • Thank you for this referral. My sister saw his ad in the paper, so I checked online
for more info; there wasn't much and even though a website was listed I tried a
half dozen times to access it and nothing. So, I didn't feel so confident about him.
but now that I got a very good reference, I will reconsider and put his name "back at the top of the list."
