    DOG-FLU OUTBREAK UPDATE...

Excerpt from longer recent news article (see link below):

"The new virus is different from the previous strain of dog flu, H3N8, that's been circulating in the United States since 2004. The new strain, known as H3N2, has been found in animals in China and Korea, and an infected animal probably brought it to Chicago, Poulsen said.

There is a vaccine for the previous U.S. dog flu strain, but it's generally given only to dogs at high risk of getting infected, and experts don't know if the vaccine protects against the new strain. A few pharmaceutical companies have started working on a new vaccine, but it will probably be four to six months before it becomes available, Poulsen said."

"OOPA SHOOPA"....:~} LET'S POLKA! PEOPLE...!

While watching a library DVD of some shows from the old Ch.11 series, 'Wild Chicago', I was surprised to learn that there is/was/is a museum dedicated to Polka on the Southwest Side (originally housed in its own building at 4145 S. Kedzie), it is now to be found upstairs at Polonia Banquet's/& dance hall (which still books the occasional 'polka party', as well as Mexican weddings), located at 4604 S. Archer Ave.

The article (link below), mentions a dedicated 'curator', Dave Ulczycki, and that visits are by appointment: (312) 315-2215 or visit www.internationalpolka.com.

Here's the entire Tribune article (2009) about it:

Q: WHY DO POLKA AND MARIACHI MUSIC SOUND ALIKE?*

    from online site Answers.com--

"Because Mariachi music IS essentially a re-creation of polka music. "Mariachi" is a bastardization of the French word "Mariage," after the French attempt to take over Mexico in the mid-19th century. The original mariachi bands played at weddings, and the name stuck.
Mariachi is a Northern Mexican folk music, which is directly derived from German polka bands, which Mexicans heard in the 19th century. The rollicking rhythms and instruments (accordians, guitars, horns, fiddles, hand-held drums) are all based in polka tradition, as are the tight-fitting short jackets and pants decorated up the sides with buttons; a variation of German gentlemen's clothing. The oversized cowboy hats however, are a purely Mexican touch."

    * Fitting then, that the Polonia Banquets (& dance hall) on Archer Avenue in Brighton Park, now hosts both Polka parties and Mexican Weddings....

Happy Happy Joy Joy !!

Thanks to hard work from the Archer Heights Civic Association, Ald Mike Zalewski and community residents on 5000 and 5100 blocks of Kostner Kenneth and Kolin the auto repair shop Monroy's Muffler is no longer in business at Archer and Kostner

  • I still see plenty of cars there and it looks like they're still running their business

vanmer79, you 'took the words right out of my mouth', as I've been thinking about this
the last month or more, since, you're absolutely right...except for the 'Moran; sign being removed, nothing seems to have changed at that corner of Archer and Kostner,
    with this auto business:
    1) still a load of cars parked in their lot; and more in the bays
    2) still a load of guys hanging out their (one recent weekend, a very large group
were just 'hanging' in their lot-- most not seemingly engage in work, but just standing
    around

Given the Mr. Kostner ("Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!!") started this topic, perhaps he and/or SWOldTimr could/would explain (enlighten us) WHY apparently nothing much
has changed... Or does anyone ELSE know what the deal is (it doesn't make much sense to me to just close down one supposedly 'problematic' enterprise, to have another take over that is conducting 'business as usual).

CHIMILEX Grill-Coffee-Juice

Greetings Everyone,

I will like to extend a special invitation to everyone in the neighborhood to come out and join us as we celebrate the recent opening of Chimilex Restaurant at 4636 s. Cicero. After so much hard work, we finally have the pleasure and honor to serve our first TACOS, BURRITOS, JUICES, COFFEES, SMOOTHIES & much more.

Sincerely,
Sami

  • I dont think the neighborhood needs ANOTHER taco joint there is plenty. What this area needs is a burger joint or pub or anything similiar to the north side, where there is an outdoor eating area, a bar, and dog friendly.

  • I couldnt agree more with you with opening the places you mentioned. There is plenty of store fronts and space for that. As long as people are willing to open new businesses we should support.

SW-side Continues to Bury Head in Sand as Gov Quinn Gives $50,000,000 for Trails

As a former resident of Archer Heights and a former board member of the Archer Heights Civic Association, .... I told you so!

http://www.dot.il.gov/press/1%2030%2013%20ITEP%20-%20RELEASE.pdf

When will the leaders of the Sw-side wake up? When will the people of the SW-side (Archer Heights, Garfield Ridge, Clearing) wake up? There was a reason why I championed for a bicycle and nature path for many years. There was a reason why I repeatedly sought to meet with Ald.Burke, Ald. Zalewski, Cong. Lipinski. There...

As a former resident of Archer Heights and a former board member of the Archer Heights Civic Association, .... I told you so!

Lipinski. There was a reason why I repeatedly tried to get the 'leaders' of the AHCA to support a bicycle path. If only for the reason to give energetic youth someplace to blow off steam rather than by breaking into garages and other 'crime'. But then the local papers wouldn't have much to write about.

Everyone knows (or they find out the hard way after years of trying) that to get anything done in Archer Heights one needs to have the 'leaders' figuratively present the idea on a platter of promissory votes to who ever is the alderman at the time (pick one from the above). The more pomposity the better. Yes?

One prostitute, two prostitute, three prostitute, four. Apparently there isn't enough time between counting prostitutes on 47th & Cicero or trying to get a 'senior discount' from the local politicians to champion any other cause.

The SW-side, Archer Heights specifically is the land where politicians go to retire before they retire. It's a community where one with just a HS education is comfortable. Check out the last census. Wasn't Gov Quinn a guest at the AHCA meeting earlier this year?

A bicycle path people. It's easy. Have the conversation, interest and preliminary design on the shelf ready to go for moments like this!

  • Chet 606 Rogers Park, NOHavana, CE

Wow! The SW side, specifically the 23rd ward, came out of a tough aldermanic election. Now finally we could move forward with the rebirth of the SW-side. OK Alderman Zalewski, show us your true colors.

    Everyone, please take this survey!

    http://www.greatriverschicago.com

  • Chet, I believe Zalewski ALREADY has shown us his 'true colors'....

    btw, I took your survey...

City Shelter Dogs/Cast to be Killed Even Faster-- Thanks to City Council!

Just read this Ed's column (Paw Print's) in the local City Newshound:

http://www.citynewshound.today/a-petition-on-behalf-of-chicagos-pets/

The article reveals the resolution/ordinance that the City Council approved,
which will shorten the days dogs and cats are allowed to live before they are
killed (for dogs, from 5 down to 3; cats given 0 days, unbelievably)!

Here also, is the petition's direct link:

Please sign it and demand that the
city council rescind this resolution (that was supposed to be vetted before
us-- city constituents-- but never was)....

Let's let them know NOW, they made a huge mistake in ignoring us!

Please consider this everyone--
Is it O.K. for city shelter dogs and cats to be killed even faster (than the measly few days they previously have been allotted)? Is it fine to force them now to lose a couple more days of life-- AND the hope that they could find a home, or that their owners would have a couple extra days to find them before they are put to death?!

If you too, find this abhorrent,, please do sign the aforementioned petition, and please do contact--at least--your alderman and mayo, if not all of the alderman-- to let them know--personally-- how you feel about this devastating action against innocent animals:

Lnk to all 50 city alderman's emails):
https://chicago.legistar.com/People.aspx

http://www.citynewshound.today/category/paw-prints/

  • Do they check for microchips???

  • Midway Kay--I hope you signed the protest petition and then I hope you will contact City Hall and tell them your view, directly. Thanks...animals need our help...and voices.

Stanley Jones-- Don't know....but they would be pretty insane...and heartless... if they didn't give them even THIS 'last chance'.
