August 31 is International Overdose Awareness Day ~ A Public Service Announcement

International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD) is a global event held on August 31 each year and aims to raise awareness of overdose and reduce the stigma of a drug-related death. The IOAD movement began in Australia and has quickly become a worldwide movement. This day also acknowledges the grief felt by families and friends remembering those who have met with death or permanent injury as a result of a drug overdose.

IOAD matters more than ever in light of the opioid crisis that has touched so many communities. At the urging of a special commission, the White House declared the opioid crisis a “national emergency.”

“America is enduring a death toll equal to September 11th every three weeks,” the commission’s report noted, saying a state of emergency would “force Congress to focus on funding” ways to combat the growing epidemic. The opioid crisis, which now kills over 100 Americans a day, is also having a devastating effect on business: Companies across the country call it one of the biggest problems they face, particularly when it comes to hiring and retaining workers.

Lawn fine

I live with my friend and her elderly father. He just received a fine for the backyard not being mowed. They told him he has 24 hours or he would receive. The fine is $1000 he said. He is 65 years old so Im not sure how that is going to happen. She works and Im here to help both of them, making sure he doesnt fall or try to burn the house down by trying to cook (he has immaculate degeneration).

  • Pat

My dad is 97 years old. My sister and i are in our late fifties and manage to do his home and lawn care. We do not live near his home. I also work. Sounds like there are 2 able-bodied people who can cut the back lawn instead of complaining about fines.

  • Is this the place on Lorel? If so, I reported it. Before doing so, I knocked on the door to offer to cut if for free because I realize that some people have issues.

Is this the place on Lorel? If so, I reported it. Before doing so, I knocked on the door to offer to cut if for free because I realize that some people have issues.

What's the point to your post? Are we supposed to be outraged that the city is enforcing health issues? If I see a property that has weeds/grass/tree weeds over 10" tall on average, per city regulations, I will report it. These properties are inviting to rodents and insects, including mosquitoes and ticks.

Cut the grass/weeds, including around the garages. Ignore it and risk the city placing a lien against the property if the fine is not paid. If you want to start a charity page to raise funds to pay a contractor to mow the lawn, I would gladly donate. The city has a snow removal program to help seniors and/or disabled and lack financial resources or people to help them. Perhaps one is needed to help with mowing lawns.

  • Building Love of Reading, One Journal at a Time

Mr. Deems is asking for $535.04:
My students need journals in order to support their love for books and reading. Rather than killing the enjoyment of reading by enacting rules, reading logs, and other accountability measures, journaling is more personal.

Stolen dog

Hi everyone!
I hope you're all having a great evening. I'm hoping someone has seen my dog. He was taken from our yard yesterday morning. We don't know who did it, but we know he was taken because the evidence points to it. I'm including a flyer with this post. If you see him or who has him please call/text me! He is microchipped.

Wow we had our block party on same day, no problems at all. Neighbors were visiting getting to know one another, plenty of fun for the kids including the big bouncing tank, cotton candy, parents watched their kids, everyone was respectful, it was great. Worse thing I seen was a neighbors dog wandering down the block unattended I brought the dog to him because I worried he would get in my yard and get eaten up by my dog. Sorry to hear your block party was far less than fun for you.

  • Sorry to hear this. My husband and I started one on our block, but it was more work for us. Most people didn't help like they promised. One neighbor ran the event for a few years, but at her advantage. Her daughter's bday was that weekend, so bouncy houses and entertainment, dj, etc, were supplied for all of us and her guests. Now no one does it. Sorta sad.

Car break in and vandalism

My husband's car was left unlocked accidentally and someone went through his car (near 47th and Leclaire). Luckily nothing valuable was in it. I saw someone reported something similar a few weeks ago; beware it's still happening. Also someone wrote a time and date on a neighbor's garage.

It's an easy target when unlocked accidently.

Joe and franks

Hi all, I noticed they demolished the old Joe N Franks building. Any ideas whats coming in its place? I've seen rumors but nothing concrete. It's the corner or archer and harlem

  • me

It will definitely be an Aldi's but just yesterday I read that the Brown's Chicken at 6900 Archer is being sold. So we will be losing yet another store on Archer, it's looking pretty dismal. THAT would be a great place for a Starbucks! Call your alderman.
